After over a year of break, I thought I'd try my hand at writing again. Prompt by @flashfictionfridayofficial: Green With Envy
Title: Rainy Days
WC: 392
Ryn sat at the front desk, half watching the usual quiet bustle of the library. Their new favourite client, who was well on his way to becoming a permanent resident, was buried in history and... was that physics? Why on earth would he be looking into advanced physics? Hector was there anyway, answering his questions.
They could feel Sophie behind them, fiddling idly with a stack of books, and Hamlet in the back room, supposedly taking inventory. Most likely, he too was twiddling his thumbs. The rain discouraged the older morning lot of clients, and the children were in school or sleeping.
Speaking of children. A shift in the energy outside notified Ryn that a bunch of rowdy tweets were heading their way. Seconds later, Fluffy gave a short bark, greeting the soaking, muddy kids. Ti and Frean were leading a group of maybe five or six other people, chatting and laughing. Ryn stood to greet them, and subtly remind them to please leave the umbrellas, rain coats and mud OUTSIDE the door. No such luck. As soon as he spotted them, Frean launched himself at them, giving them an uncharacteristic hug. Ryn suspected it had something to do with the water on his coat, and they thanked the Light for compact wool sweaters. They hugged him back however, making a show of picking him up and cooing. Two can play a game , Fae or not. Once he was securely back on the floor, Frean looked up and blurted:
“Why is envy green?” he sounded so innocent and genuine, Ryn could only blink, confused. “At school, today, we had to use the phrase ‘green with envy’  why is envy green?”
Like a cat waking up from a nap, stretching and then setting out for a fight with the carpet, the rhythm of the bustle picked up immediately.
With a sigh, Ryn directed the boy toward the nearest dictionary and went to settle the rest of the kids in comfy bean bags. They sent Ti to the back room to let Hamlet know she arrived, and counted heads for hot chocolate. Sophie went looking for an age appropriate story to read or game to play, while Fluffy rushed to lick everyone’s hands and get ear scratches, Hamlet mopped the floor, grumbling. The only one unaffected was Hector, who continued his conversation unperturbed, save for a smirk at Hamlet's predicament.
As always, criticism is welcome! Thank you @rainy-rose for "lending" me Hector.

I’ve realised that what I miss about fantasy is it being truly escapist. I miss it depicting places where I would actually want to go.
Every dang kid I knew waited for their Hogwarts acceptance letter. Reading the books and seeing it on screen gave you this warm, fuzzy feeling and a feeling of longing, even when they were in danger and fighting monsters and evil wizards, you want to be there.
You want to go to Middle Earth, see hobbits and elves and dwarves and run through this land of incredible beauty, mysticism and magic.
You want to be in the TARDIS, seeing the universe.
The more recent trend of fantasy is this gritty, dark realism and places where you would just never want to go. I don’t want to go to Westeros. I don’t want to be in The Hunger Games, I don’t particularly want to be in The Witcher universe. I’m living in the world of Black Mirror and I hate it.
Fantasy used to say “hey our world kinda sucks but here’s a cooler one”, but now it says “hey our world kinda sucks, but here’s an even worse one.”
That isn’t to say that the above are bad. They’re not.
But I miss beautiful, escapist fantasy that gives me a break. That takes me somewhere magical, somewhere otherworldly and gives me messages of hope and optimism in the face of darkness. I really, really miss that.

as much as i love the trope of a character falling fast and hard for someone, i also love the subtle descent where they don’t really think about it; where that person is just kind of there until one day they realize that person is so ingrained in their lives and they cannot do without them. where there is no conscious effort on either ends to become romantically involved but somehow the thought of them being with someone else is disconcerting. where “i enjoy being with you” unwittingly turns into “i want to be with you”

I was naked and for some reason not allowed to put any clothes on (I don’t really remember why) meanwhile everyone around me acted as if it was normal for me to be butt naked at work and ignored it even when I put my boob into their milkshake to get a reaction out of them

stop acting like you can “fix” asexual people by giving them unwanted sexual attention in an attempt to get them to reciprocate it
stop acting like you can “fix” aromantic people by giving them unwanted romantic attention in an attempt to get them to reciprocate it
these people are not waiting for the “right person” to come and “fix” them because they are not fucking broken.

list of mundane things that feel like ancient human rituals
cleaning or wipe your bare feet
breaking off a piece of bread and handing it to someone
putting the weight of a basket on your hip or head
eating nuts or berries while hunched over close to the ground
seeing something startling just out of your line of sight and very quickly stepping or leaping on to a larger object to get a better view
cupping your hands into running water to wash your face
the unanimous protection of a baby or child in a public space where women are present
when an elderly woman laughs and grips your forearm tightly

you know those childhood memories that you forgot all about until you smell something that feels right, and then suddenly you’re eight again and you’re smiling even though it’s february and the cold bites against your skin because you’re eating your favourite treat and yes, it’s in a parking lot nowhere in the world, but it’s you and your memory and that fond nostalgia that makes you chase the scent again and again-

how do you tell someone "I'm not ignoring you, I'm just disconnected from reality rn and the days are all blurred together and I feel completely apathetic towards everyone/everything around me so it's really hard for me to maintain a conversation" without saying that?

Hey, @the-rain-on-your-dandelions, has anyone told you that you’re a genius? That’s an incredible system. I wish I had a friend group that could function for!

Chiune Sugihara. This man saved 6000 Jews. He was a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania. When the Nazis began rounding up Jews, Sugihara risked his life to start issuing unlawful travel visas to Jews. He hand-wrote them 18 hrs a day. The day his consulate closed and he had to evacuate, witnesses claim he was STILL writing visas and throwing from the train as he pulled away. He saved 6000 lives. The world didn’t know what he’d done until Israel honored him in 1985, the year before he died.
