November meet-up with guest speaker Dr. Tom Tilley.

Tom is the man responsible for the Guiness record-holding giant Octopus Game & Watch. 

Unfortunately the screen in the giant Octopus Game & Watch broke on the way to the venue so we couldn’t play it on the night, however we got to hear all about Tom’s other incredible creations.

Here are ten out of seventeen of the officially released Nintendo 64 variants. The first N64 pictured has the Japanese Randnet Disk Drive attachment with it. (More on that another time!) The clear ones are all the US Funtastic Colors. The 2 two-tone ones are Japanese exclusive colors.  The gold one is a Toys R Us exclusive in the US, otherwise it is just a limited edition color in Japan. Check out the Post #2/2 for the really rare stuff!

This is every color Gameboy Pocket ever made.

Some of these are extremely limited. The Atlus Gameboy for example, was given to employees of game developer Atlus in 1997. Less than 150 of them were ever made. Also, there were only 2,000 glow in the dark Gameboys ever made and they could only be won through a drawing.

Learning Pixel Art by Max Hervieux (best value you will ever buy for $1, very recommended for intermediate–advanced artists, has a Pixel Joint approach/mentality to it)

Pixel Logic - A Guide to Pixel Art by @michafrar and plenty guest artists ($9 or more, lots of content, beautifully designed)

Designing Arcade Computer Game Graphics by Ari Feldman (a big old-school print book, more about game production rather than drawing, now free in digital form)

The Complete Guide to Isometric Pixel Art by Rhys Davies ($4, pretty basic)

Pixel Secrets by @binoftrash​ ($12, another collection of tutorials for beginners)

Pixel Art for Game Developers by Daniel Silver ($40, I didn’t buy it personally, others say it’s basic and overpriced)

Visual Compendium series (C64, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, NES, SNES) by Bitmap Books ($13 PDFs, $26–32 softcover, $40 hardcover, absolutely stunning design and print full of your favorite scenes and sprites from old video games)
