sometimes i laugh about how razer was literally just some guy. he wasn’t top warrior, he was a good warrior, but he wasn’t anything showstopping. he’s quick-witted and very intelligent, but he never really had to put those skills out there until he ended up In Space as a red lantern ( and then with the crew of the interceptor ) and its like if you actually think about how the lantern corps in general seem to function, unlike other superheroes ... before anyone was a lantern, they were just a normal person who happened to fit somewhere on the emotional spectrum that a lantern ring would be like “oh thats a good one” but the thought is also u know. something something every person can have power, no matter how mundane they may seem otherwise which i, for one, think is very cool as a thought

“knight if volkregans just settle into the job they choose, why does ilana ask razer to Not go to war” literally everything was in chaos, fun fact the volkregans were COMPLETELY UNPREPARED to deal with actual warfare??? it was chaos?? and considering the state of razer’s village, they were probably in a state where 1 tribes had gathered together due to atrocitus spreading shit ( so there were more people and there was less ability to keep things in check ) 2 survival means adapting, and sometimes adapting means saying “we have to ignore societal rules for a bit to get our species to not perish fully” 

this was literally a species that had mastered the art of not fighting over resources or territory because there was PLENTY OF IT, and i dont know how atrocitus screwed that up, but he sure did and there’s a fair chance he actually sent other red lanterns to just decimate things and then pinned the blame elsewhere so uhhh thanks for coming to my tedtalk

VOLKREG: THE COMING OF AGE RITUAL

the post that you guys were probably waiting for more than any of the other posts i have lined up lmao, so here we go. this also is going to cover naming conventions because that’s a part of this

the reason i mention naming conventions is because volkregans get named twice. when they’re born, they are given a “kit’s name”. this name is used until the coming of age ritual where the transition from kit to adult happens, at which point they put aside their “kit’s name” and are bestowed one of four “ceremonial names”: “warrior’s name”, “healer’s name”, “scholar’s name”, or “harvester’s name”. 

so, razer had another name when he was born. so did ilana. volkregans don’t often share their kit’s names with others once they’ve received their ceremonial names.

now, onto what the coming of age ritual actually entails: to no one’s surprise, it varies depending on path, but ends with the same “marking ceremony” since this is a post about razer technically, i don’t have to go through all four variants, but for anyone who actually knows me, of course i will. 

𝚆𝙰𝚁𝚁𝙸𝙾𝚁'𝚂 𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚄𝙰𝙻

or: the thing razer went through. this could be summed up as “children go on a hunt and there is a lot of symbolism”, which is essentially the most basic description of it. this also ties into why razer has so many weapons on his person as seen in “babel”. 

as i mentioned before, volkreg has plenty of resources for its comparatively small population ( for an earth-sized planet, the volkregans are actually vastly outnumbered by a total sum of wildlife species ), so a warrior’s ritual has plenty of resources. the hunt itself is meant to tap into the primal instinct of the kits, and they basically have to prove that they can survive alone in harsh conditions. they make their own weapons and essentially are cast out from the village into the wilderness. they are allowed to return once they have mastered a weapon of choice, and they must also bring the pelt of a specific animal. depending on where the tribe is situated, the animal will vary. this is how the volkregans make sure animals don’t go extinct due to warrior rituals. 

for reference, razer ( and the other kits who became warriors from his tribe ) had to bring back the pelt of a large bear-like animal. which, mind you, was not an easy feat. and yes, kits have died during warrior rituals. 

while going through the ritual, the kits usually seem to notice patterns in what they experience. whether or not this is because they’re sorta traumatized by the experience or whether or not it’s something else is very unclear, but it sure happens. i promise this is relevant. upon returning to the village, the kits visit the village elders to begin the marking ceremony. 

𝙷𝙴𝙰𝙻𝙴𝚁'𝚂 𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚄𝙰𝙻

this was ilana’s path, for anyone who was wondering. the healer’s ritual is like going to medical school rapidfire and on steroids. as in, it’s also hell to endure, because why would anything on volkreg NOT be extra; have you seen this species — healers rely on intuition as much as they do practical knowledge, and this ritual is why healers are arguably the most self-actualized individuals of a tribe. kits going through the healer’s ritual do not leave the tribe, which is nice ... ?

much of the ritual ( that isn’t med school on steroids ) is, for all intents and purposes, mysticism of sorts. learning to tap into a flow of energy that exists between organisms and the likes. 

the healer’s ritual and the scholar’s ritual share a common end-point; the cultural view is that they are granted a vision from the gods, and when this happens, they go straight to the village elders for their marking ceremony. 

𝚂𝙲𝙷𝙾𝙻𝙰𝚁'𝚂 𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚄𝙰𝙻 

ok, so scholars are not only record-keepers for tribes, they are also teachers who guide younger generations. it’s an important job! all jobs are important on volkreg, but i digress. the scholar’s ritual is uh. well, if the volkregans hadn’t perished, a great amount of blue and green lanterns could’ve been chosen from this group. 

there is also a large mystical vibe to this ritual. not only is it memorization of scriptures, it’s a lot of meditation. clairvoyance is common in volkregan scholars. honestly, any kits who seem to show clairvoyance at all are usually right on the path to being scholars, because that’s what it’s most associated with. 

there is, much like the healer’s ritual, a vision that will come to a scholar, and when this vision comes, they also go to the village elders for the marking ceremony.

𝙷𝙰𝚁𝚅𝙴𝚂𝚃𝙴𝚁'𝚂 𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚄𝙰𝙻 

a rather time consuming ritual, it’s like the warrior’s ritual in a different direction. harvesters also serve as architects, they’re basically in charge of making sure the physical structure of a tribe doesn’t just collapse, and of course, tend to livestock and crops. it is also said that they are capable of making “soul bonds” to wildlife, although it’s not like anyone can study this or ask ... 

much like warriors, harvesters are sent to survive in the wilderness, but instead of coming back with animal pelts and weaponry, they return with “nature’s blessing”. they are the only group to receive markings that are NOT bestowed in a marking ceremony. “nature’s blessing” is a unique mark that will appear on the harvester’s body, from which ritual markings will branch out from. 

𝙼𝙰𝚁𝙺𝙸𝙽𝙶 𝙲𝙴𝚁𝙴𝙼𝙾𝙽𝚈

well, congrats to the kits who lived through these things, mostly the warriors, because that’s the most likely path that someone will DIE on. kits who return from their rituals/are given the necessary visions then have one more thing to do before receiving their markings. 

this involves an elixir made SPECIFICALLY to induce a trance that will in fact force extra visions from those who have already had others, or first visions for warriors and harvesters. during this, kits end up saying some cryptic things about what they experienced during the rituals, and the elders take it from there. in the case of healers and scholars, they sorta give themselves their “ceremonial names”, because that’s part of their vision ( not elixir induced ). 

i mentioned in another post that warriors are the only volkregans who end up with the “hunter’s mask” because the other groups don’t Need that. but, everyone gets markings. which are uh. unfortunately carved into the bodies of the kits with a ceremonial dagger dipped in a different mixture which leads to the dark lines rather than just the appearance of scars. in a way, the markings are scars, but different. the hunter’s mask is painted on with this same elixir, and honestly no one ever said any of this was comfortable, because it hurts like hell. 

but, once all of that is over, they’re no longer kits, they’re recognized as adults in a specific role and gain the right to call themselves sons/daughters/children of volkreg. they leave the ceremony with their ceremonial names, and settle into adult life.
