I don't know if it's an unpopular take but I cannot stand Toph's characterization in the ATLA comics. They stripped Toph of all her personality traits expect for sassy earthbender. She's downright rude in some instances. I won't even begin to talk about her erasure - one of the fandom's preferred characters and yet she is barely more than a side character (even in her designated comic she has to share it with Aang)
Where is the Toph that cried because she missed her mother and felt remorse for abandoning her during the war? Where is the Toph that comforted Zuko during the Ember Island Play intermission? Where is the Toph that canonically loves and protects her friends, thinks of them as a family and wants to carry out their friendship into another life?
Yes, Toph is confident, arrogant at times and sassy. But she never was rude to her loved ones; never disregarded differenf cultures nor did she ever lack spirituality. It's also hysterical that during The Rift - after Toph passes out from saving multiple people from being crushed by metal - not one of her friends remembers or seems to care about her. NOT ONE!
Most characters were done dirty in these comics. Katara and Zuko might be the biggest victims of being substantially OOC but I rarely see people talk about how they completely disregarded Toph's character arc or her personality.
One day I'll write a whole dissertation of Toph's portrayal in the comics (and how her relationship with Aang was handled)
You can have a badass female character without stripping her from her humility and vulnerability.

there are a lot of bad takes in the atla fandom (like, atla fandom may as well be a bad take generator) but something that has really been pissing me off lately is the assumption that you can categorize the fire nation royal family into good guys and bad guys. first of all, obviously, they're all bad guys. they are imperialists. but the idea that "sozin ozai azula bad" and "iroh lu ten ursa zuko azulon(?!) good" is actually insane.
lu ten died attempting to conquer the earth kingdom. lu ten was there because his father, iroh, was leading the siege. ursa laughed when iroh joked about burning ba sing se to the ground. zuko laughed too, mirroring his dear mother who taught him about the wonders of imperialism. and the fact that some people think that azulon was a good guy because he favored iroh is crazy. he favored iroh because iroh was the better imperialist, was more charming and tactically savvy as he bent the world to his will. people who think that azulon didn't like ozai because ozai was cruel literally have it backwards. ozai was cruel because azulon didn't like him. sozin shaped azulon, and azulon shaped iroh and ozai. azulon reigned for most of the war, and he was responsible for decimating the southern water tribe and colonizing the earth kingdom.
iroh only realizes the error of his ways well into middle age, after spending a majority of his life colonizing the world. he only stops to reconsider once he experiences the adverse effects of war for himself through the loss of his son. likewise, zuko can only gain empathy for the victims of the war by being one himself, as a refugee in the earth kingdom, and bonding with people who have been hurt by the fire nation. azula doesn't get that chance. ozai doesn't get that chance. azulon, lu ten, and ursa are dead, so they will never get that chance. but it's not like there is some ontological moral divide separating azula from zuko. zuko was a sensitive child whereas azula was better at embodying fire nation values of power and cunning. zuko was punished for his outbursts whereas azula knew how to keep her mouth shut. therefore, zuko experienced circumstances that led him to disavow fire nation imperialism.
but that doesn't mean that azula is ontologically evil. azula was the iroh of her generation to zuko's ozai, and iroh (eventually) disavowed conquest as well. there is no inherent divide between good and bad, monster and human. ursa was a warm and loving mother to zuko, just as iroh was a warm and loving father to lu ten, but they both laughed at others' suffering. their values were shaped by their circumstances and experiences. their ideologies do not make them less human, or less capable of change, just as their interpersonal behaviors do not negate their abhorrent ideologies.

Oh boy - this hits in the feels
I adore that radical ginger boy with my life
He's such a tragic character I want to protect him from his own fate but at the same time I want him to go even further and do what he has to...
Such a wonderful character, too bad Isayama kinda didn't care about him (then again compared to what kind of death Isayama gave to my girl Hange and what he did to all other characters in 139 I want Isayama to forget about Floch's existence and never ever publish anything about him)
Thinking again about the last 2 or so days of flochs life. He watches Erens plan come to fruition, takes leadership to try and guide his nation through the Rumbling and take it out the other side. He fights tooth and nail against the titans Zeke made, fighting until he physically can't walk, and then when he gets betrayed by thr people he thought would be most loyal to Eren's cause he doesn't panic, he mobilises, he takes action and begins to secure ports and harbours, then when he's durther betrayed by Jean, someone he looks up to, he personally moves to save Eren's plan and Paradis, to save his people. He couldn't walk only a day ago but here he is moving at breakneck pace to get to the port, hell figuring out what port they were going to, and then, still likely injured, he staves off Mikasa Ackermann, the Commander of the Scouts, TWO titan shifters in close combat, to come a hair away from destroying their ship, and even then, metred underwater, bleeding heavily, saltwater stinging his wounds, he grapples the ship and follows it for hours in the ocean, bleeding. He stays ahold of the boat all the way across the sea until they dock, then in that state he's able to walk and take aim to shoot the fuel tank of their plane almost ruining their plan before finally being killed.
I'm not Erwin's biggest fan, but he was the catalyst for that transformation, and Eren was just the accelerant. Floch had no special powers, no healing, no enhanced durabilty, no Ackermann powers. He was simply a man in a world that was built to destroy him and yet he persevered, he excelled, he is probably the closet Attack on Titan gets to an archetypical 'hero' even if he's not framed as one in the show. He never gave up, and he fought for what he thought was going to let his people live long lives.

This means so much to me
Floch and Jean my beloveds
Regardless of everything that happened between them, Jean was upset when Floch died.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jean was Floch’s commanding officer, and Jean never wanted his comrades to be hurt, even if they were Jaegerists in the end.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jean and Floch had a complicated, strained relationship. But Jean was upset when he died.
Jean is an emotive, sensitive person, who cares when the ‘other side’ die as the war unfolds around them.
He cares.
