“It’s… It’s really common, unfortunately. A lot of people around the land fear the Malfested… and for good reason too. They… they believe that they’re cursed… that’s only the start.”
Tumblr media
“Oh, dear. Haven’t they realized the whole world is cursed?              I suppose they need someone to blame, and with such a              promising name as Malfested, it’s hardly a surprise that they              were chosen for the preservation of order. Bread and circuses.              The modus operandi of any empire.”

❝ Come on, we can’t just … wait a minute, how do you      know that this is a base? It’s supposed to be—– well, it’s      s u p p o s e d to be secret. Who told you about it? ❞
Tumblr media
“You did, just now, my clever little darling. Good help is hard              to find in this economy, isn’t it?              -- In any case, your services are no longer required. Your              conversation, on the other hand, remains appreciated.              What other secrets to you wish to let slip?”

❝ I… I don’t know if that’ll be possible. I’d love to       help, but you won’t be able to get in until I speak      to my superiors. ❞
Tumblr media
“Oh! How charming.  A rule-following rebel -- the satire              writes itself. Why don’t we forgo the well-trodden path              and forge our own way? What your superiors don’t know              surely won’t hurt them. And there will be a little extra in it              for you, as well.”

⊰ 💦 ⊱ ▌To be referred to as such an unsightly serpent. It wounded her. She knew nothing of the stranger but it would seem they knew enough of her. What was she to claim? She meant no ill will to anyone.

❝Those are rather large accusations to spat at one                  you know nothing of. God or no, to treat someone                  with such disrespect and out of the blue no less…                  As for your claims, I do not influence the people in                  any manner of the word. If they have faith, that is                  all they need.❞
Tumblr media
“Oh, my darling, I mean no disrespect. In fact, I must say I have              some admiration for your position, though I am disappointed              that you do not take advantage of your authority. Faith is              powerful, indeed. Medicine for the masses, or so they say.              Well, some medicines are quite addictive.”

NOVEL PART 1 CHAPTER 1 SCENE 3 FIRST DRAFT PREVIEW:
She’d seen him before, but only as a plucky young babe; he’d been away learning the craft of war, and had earned a reputation in the time she hadn’t seen him. The Lion of Valcan, the people liked to call him, not for his roaring voice, not for the mountain lion’s skin that so adorned his shoulders, but for his astonishing courage in battle. Word had come from the front lines of war, naming him the most handsome man in the world, with honey-brown curls down to his shoulders likening him to the god of beauty, the most honorable among elves. And he wasn’t unpleasant to look at, Orion would admit — but rumor had a tendency to exaggerate. She only saw a young boy whose head was too full of worthless idealism. How quaint, for the son of a spymaster.
“My darling boy,” Acra began, her voice sickly sweet with irritation at interruption, “though you’ve learned much of swordsmanship, it seems your skills in etiquette are lacking.”
“My deepest apologies, my Lady,” the boy replied, “but I come bearing important news.”
Orion grinned. “More important than the impending destruction of a crime ring and inflamer of civil unrest?” And the boy fell silent. He’d learn to hold his tongue son enough. In this place, words without thought quickly resulted in punishment, if not outright death.
Acra’s gaze returned to her humble spy, one eyebrow raised. Did Orion detect a hint of curiosity in that unflinching look? Unlikely. “Go on.”
Orion strode to the desk, her walk a swagger. “You are, I hope, familiar with the organized crime family called the Grethra’in, my dear Lion?”
The boy frowned; he was, clearly, unused to such patronization, and from a satyr no less. Good. Orion loved nothing more than putting people in their place. “I am not so isolated as you assume, mistress,” he said stiffly. “It is run by Haralin Ha’el, the minister of the Blooden Gods.”
“Allegedly run by him,” Orion replied. “We know he holds the power, but we have no proof — none that would hold up in court. And we must keep the people’s faith in the public justice,” she added.
“Indeed. We cannot remove him without substantial evidence, else the populace will rise up in outrage,” Acra said. “Especially as he is one of their gods’ priests.”
“Mm. His right-hand man is Acrin Gael,” Orion continued, “a low-life thug that gained Ha’el’s trust, and not without good reason. He’s strong — very muscular. Very violent. Carries out all the dirty work. Regardless, he’s not altogether very intelligent, and can be easily swayed by threat of death.”
“I assume you are telling me all this because you’ve seen something about him?” Acra said. Her son looked at her; clearly, he was unfamiliar with the satyr’s augury abilities. He really was a sweet country bumpkin, wasn’t he? But most knights were. Their armor couldn’t hide their simple hearts.
“You assume correctly. He will be alone in the public. . .
