Ok, but can we talk about Hades for a second? Even before I became a Hellenic Polytheist, I had always wondered what he must be like? We have movies and books that always depict him so negatively. Water Worship/Meditation

(This is done after you’ve finished cleaning yourself. Do not wash your body or hair after because it can disturb the flow of ‘power’ you’ve been given as a thanks from the element, deity, goddess and to wash yourself might seem rude as if you are washing away their gift)

Needed: Running Water* (Sea Salt) Scrub**

Instructions:

Start by rinsing yourself off in the water (if you’re in a public place- i.e. waterfall/rain -either do this in a bathing suit or look up the nudity laws in your town) to cleanse yourself of all other outside forces and elements

Using the sea salt scrub and only*** your hand, softly rub the scrub into your skin

As you rub the scrub into your skin, let the feeling of water enveloping you, transport you back to the ocean.

Become hyper focused on the feeling of your hand rubbing the scrub into your skin

Give a piece of yourself to the body of water of your choice (ocean, river, lake, swamp) as an offering. This can be by humming to give them your voice, dancing (carefully) to give them your grace, meditation or yoga breathing to give them your life. It’d be best you do something that has no matter (not and object) so it can be continuously given and you can’t take it back

Softly wash the scrub off your body and place yourself underneath the water for as long as you’re comfortable. Remember to breath, keep your head down if you struggle to, but if you can feel free to let the water run right over your face

Remove yourself from water and pat dry

Thank the water source/deity/goddess of your choice and be on your way

*Running water can be anything: Shower, Waterfall, Rain, Swamp, Lagoon (if in public do this in a bathing suit, unless your towns nudist laws are super lenient and your comfortable enough) (make sure the water you use is safe for you to submerge in)

**The scrub doesn’t have to be a sea salt one, it can be anything- like coconut oil and sugar, which is super easy to make at home (if you are using a public water source (lake, river, etc.) make sure the scrub you are using won’t interfere with the natural wildlife within the water)

***I stress that you use only your hand and not a washcloth or loofah because your sole purpose is not to exfoliate but to use the stimulus as a form of hypnosis to give you something to concentrate on. Small circular motion that slowly move from the bottom of your feet up to our neck is best because it also promotes circulation

Advice for the baby Hellenic Polytheists

I’ve got just about a year under my belt now, so I’m very much still a baby myself. But here’s a few things I wish I’d known, or think might be helpful.

Just make khernips with a match. No really. It’s the extinguishing of a flame in the water that makes it lustral. Don’t worry about the rest unless you really want to and have the time.

You don’t have to introduce yourself to any gods. They all want to be worshiped; just get to it.

We’re not as intimidating as you think we are. We just…read a lot. You can read a lot too. You’re welcome here. We’ll even help.

Books are expensive. Theoi.com’s library is free.

Statuary is nice. It is also wicked pricey. Here’s what you need on an altar: A bowl for offerings, a vessel for khernips (can be near the altar rather than on it)

Wine, olive oil, honey, water are pretty universal libations. You’re welcome.

Dispose of offerings however works for you. Just do it with respect, and you’re fine. Oh but don’t consume offerings to cthonic (underground) deities, alright? That’s bad times.

The gods demand Arete. That is your personal best, not the best of the person next to you, or your mother, or somebody you idolize on tumblr. Do your best.

This is a religion of Kharis. When you ask the gods for something, give them something. Then, do not forget the thank you. Offer again if you are granted what you asked for.

Spell for Summoning a Domestic Familiar 🐾

*Long Post~Elaborate*

“A domestic familiar is an animal that stays with the Witch, provides magickal assistance and represents sacred nature. A Familiar is an animal you have a psychic connection with, or one that will help you with magick. A domestic familiar is sacred, a representation of the Goddess and God in living form. As a Witch, or as a Pagan, you have a heritage of a connection with nature, a spiritual connection with animals. Your pet is not necessarily a domestic Familiar, so don’t think that you can force your hamster into magickal service for you.”

“You can’t just go buy an animal and assume it will help make you a stronger, more powerful Witch. They can be rescued, found or borrowed (an occasional visit from your neighbor’s cat might have more meaning than you think), Domestic Familiars can be a pigeon you feed every day, the dog you’ve had since you were a child, or a cat that visits at dinner time. As long as the animal is willing, it can be trained as a domestic Familiar.Your domestic Familiar will find you, when you are ready. Don’t think that you can hide a dog from the landlord, a rat from your parents, or a cat from your children. If you don’t have an animal in your life who may become your domestic Familiar, you can call one. But remember, it’s their choice to reveal themselves. You’ll know instinctively.”

The following is a spell I have devised and will try myself. (Note, I have taken some of the spell wording/following chant from modern media but honestly if the words work and the intention is in your heart, then it’ll work, whether you heard it on a show, read it in a book, or are using someone else’s words, your intentions must be pure. Then all you have to do is believe.)

What you will need:

Few pieces of paper & pen/pencil📃🖋(I say a few, for mistakes, we know it happens, lol)

Utensil to write in the dirt with (twig/opposite end of pen, etc. *writing with your finger is also acceptable👍🏼)

A mixture of the following herbs:

Sage: Healing, Protection, Wisdom, Wishes, Health, Immortality

Blessed Thistle: Spiritual Aid, Protection

Horehound: Mental Powers, Protection, Healing, Exorcism

Shepherd’s Purse: Spells & Rituals, Healing

Agrimony: Protection, Sleep

Yarrow: Divination, Psychic Powers, Courage, Love

Wormwood: Calling Spirits, Divination, Love, Protection, Psychic Powers

Dandelion: Calling spirits, Divination, Wishes

Spearmint Leaf: Augmenting Power, Healing Love, Luck, Strength, Sleep

Alfalfa Leaf: Magic (also, random, but used for: anti-hunger, as well as money/prosperity magic)

Bay Leaf: Visions, Dreams, Healing, Psychic Powers, Repels Negative Energy

White Willow Bark: Divination, Healing, Love, Protection

Kelp: Travel Protection (so your Familiar arrives safely😉)

Catnip: Friendship, Happiness, Joy, Love, Beauty (dont worry, if you dont want a cat, this is mainly for Friendship, Happiness and Joy, yes it can be used for cat magic but if you want a dog or a fish or reptile, this will still be good because you are trying to form a bond)

Sea Salt: Purification, Protection

Copy this sigil onto the paper📃 and into the dirt you stand on.🌱

Sigil Meaning: “My Domestic Familiar Will Find Me”

🙌🏼Repeat the following chant as you imagine your familiar finding you. (If you have a specific animal preference, picture it. Imagine your Familiar finding you and what kind of bond you want to have. Be clear that this is for your Domestic Familiar…you don’t want just any spirit showing up.🤷‍♀️)

“Spirits of the forest*, I pronounce my intentions to thee. I ask my hearts familiar Come forth and seek me and equals we will be. Not master and servant but familiar to familiar, to share our knowledge, our spirit, and our traits. To guide one another in this journey. Come forth sweet familiar, and equals we will be. So mote it be.”

*You may change “Forest” to, “Earth, Air, Water and Fire”~ if you do not have an idea or preference of what kind of Familiar you want. For example if you would like a land animal (cat, dog, rabbit, etc) you can use Forest/Earth, if you’d like a bird-Air, Fish- Water, Dragon (more like a reptile/lizard, sorry, we dont get cool dragons like in Game of Thrones, lol)-Fire, and so on.

*if you want an insect I’d research the correct element that is associated, could be air, could be earth, etc.. Always, Always do your research! No one is perfect and sometimes people get things wrong, but researching does help when you’re unsure!

Seal the spell by the corresponding action. For example, again if you have a *preference of animal, you will dispense the herbs in one of the following ways:

Earth- bury the elements🌱

Air- Throw them to the wind🌪

Water- Dispense in a body of water💧

Fire- Throw the elements into a fire**🕯

🔥**Always remember Fire Safety~especially since you’ll be outside, for this I’d say bring an ashtray to burn the paper safely and once the flame is completely out and the paper is ash *do not burn your fingers*, throw them to the wind**🔥

*If no preference of animal, choose the way that speaks to you most and dispense the herbs in that way.

☆Also, please be reasonable about what you ask, as well as reasonable about what you can keep in your home. I’m sorry but I can’t help you explain to your parent why you need a comodo dragon as your familiar…and also, sorry but, you will not have a unicorn, talking animal that tells jokes, or a hippogryph showing up, so again, keep it reasonable.😉

Once the spell is complete, let the spirits work, let the spell do its work~ keep an open heart and mind, understand your Familiar will not just appear instantaneously, give it time, understand there is an instinctual process and response and your Familiar will come. Something inside will tell you this is them.

🌟Remember when you do find your Familiar/your Familiar finds you, this is your equal, treat them as such, Never harm your Familiar. Do not force your Familiar to engage in magic with you, they know what they need and sometimes what you need.
