doing a spell when you have motivation but the timing isn't necessarily perfect will always be 1000% more effective than waiting for the perfect timing and not having the executive functioning/spoons/time to do it.
trying to wait for the perfect timing really hindered my practice as a chronically ill witch with ADHD.
a spell done with imperfect timing is more effective than a spell not done at all

not to be nostalgic for 2013-2014 tumblr but i honestly do miss when we all used to make those posts with screenshots of powerpoint presentations written entirely in comic sans infodumping about our silly little interests in a comedic way. that was actually a delightful way to share information we should bring it back.

Tarot Journal
So I’m gonna be starting a tarot journal! I keep feeling like I’m stagnant with my tarot education and I think it’s because I keep using the book as a reference. I’d love to just innately know the meanings behind the different cards. I’ve got an old journal that used to be for work which I started repurposing for my tarot readings and it’s honestly the perfect format for a tarot journal. My friend gave me the great idea of pasting the printable rider-waite-smith deck onto the face side of a deck of playing cards and since I have just a metric shitton of playing cards I think that’s a great idea.

I think a spell template would be very helpful for us witches that have all of their ideas going around. But not just a spell template that included the materials and the important aspects of the ritual–but a spell template that also included the phase of the moon, the season, the relevant day, etc.,
Idk I may make one just because I haven’t seen one that gets this deep into the intricacies of spell work. But if you all know one, feel free to send it my way.

dumb question for witches, what's the difference between a grimoire & a book of shadows?

Okay, now that I’ve had time to sort out some thoughts…
There are two really common questions I see around Witchblr. The first is “I’m new, where do I start?” And of course there are a whole bunch of guides around to help those new witches. Masterlists and recommendations and stuff.
But the other question is this: “I think I might be cursed, what do I do?”
And the answer is almost always the same thing: “You’re probably not, unless you know a witch who hates you.”
That’s it. No links, no recommendations, no suggestions on search terms, nothing. That answer has been really getting on my nerves lately, and I’ve been trying to figure out why.
I keep coming back to my Mythbusters principal. Test it out. Just dismissing someone because you think they probably aren’t solves nothing. With that dismissive answer, we’re operating on the principal that curses only happen when a practicing witch gets angry enough to curse a specific person, and they cannot happen any other way. Are we certain that’s how it works? Are we absolutely certain?
Because in my practice, I’ve been operating on the idea that cursing is easy. That enough focused ill-will directed at a specific target can manifest in a curse. Now, I don’t mean a big scary movie-style curse that’s going to make thirteen generations of your descendants turn into lizards during the full moon. But I do think that much focused energy can ‘stick’ onto someone, and then causes chaos until it’s removed or falls off on its own.
I work in retail. I encounter a lot of people during a work day, and a lot of them end up angry at me for one reason or another. We didn’t have the muffins they wanted, they couldn’t find the bakery bags, their coupon is expired… whatever the reason, people end up mad. And while most of them are smart enough to know that I’m not personally being an asshole to them, some of them absolutely do blame me. They get this victim complex and think that I’m targeting them specifically when I should kiss their feet because they’re a Good Customer ™. And some of these people do walk away muttering to themselves about me on a personal level.
Now, maybe just one of these encounters isn’t enough for a ‘negative energy buildup’ like I’m talking about. Maybe it takes a lot of them before it starts manifesting. Or maybe it’s just one. I don’t know, this isn’t a science. But I do know that after a string of freak happenings (cooler breaks down, equipment breaks, food spoils when it shouldn’t, shipments are delayed, get injured on something that shouldn’t cause injury), I start to wonder… am I cursed?
And rather than dismissing my own thoughts with “nah that’s dumb, there’s no witch cursing me”, I decided to assume that I was, and go ahead with a simple curse breaking spell. And you know what? My day improved instantly.
It doesn’t always work. Some days are legitimately just a bad luck day, or it’s my own bad attitude. And when my curse-breaking spells don’t work, I know it’s just me or it’s just bad luck. But honestly, ever since I started doing a regular ‘light curse breaking’ ritual, my day-to-day life has improved.
Now, I don’t mean I-won-the-lotto and I-got-crowned-Queen-of-Genovia, but I do mean that I’ve noticed a drastic decrease in the little stupid inconveniences that can pile up into One Big Bad Day.
I feel like I’m straying off track here.
The point is, I don’t think this whole “You’re only cursed if you know a witch who’s angry with you” thing is always true. Yeah, some days really are just bad luck, but maybe not. Look into the Evil Eye and see how many cultures believe that one can be cursed accidentally by someone looking at you with envy.
And yeah, if someone comes to us worrying that they’ve been cursed, assuring them that they probably don’t need to freak out is good. But maybe we also start telling them that running water can help dispel a curse and that mirrors can be used to reflect bad intentions away. After all, why do we witch if not to take control of our lives in a chaotic world? Do the curse-breaking spell. Worst case scenario, you’ll waste some salt you could have used on your veggies.

Candle Care 🕯
Tumblr media
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish flames before going to sleep. Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
A candle burning correctly will have a straight, constant, teardrop flame.
Majority of these tips are for pillar candles (stubby fellas) to ensure an even burn, to maximise the life of your candle, and for your own safety.
Wick
keep trimmed to 5mm (0.2 inch) before lighting
clear debris from wax to help prevent combustion
remove “mushrooming” from the wick
use a snuffer instead of blowing out the candle to prevent wick drift and splashing wax
reposition the wick in cooling wax to ensure it stays in its intended position
Burn
never burn a candle for longer than 3 hours
burn a candle to its edge the first time to avoid craters (or, more specifically, burn 1hr for every 2.5cm (1 inch) diameter)
select correct candle holder with 70/30 rule - 70% empty space to 30% candle - to avoid overheating
allow the candle wax to cool and solidify before relighting
avoid burning a candle below a half-inch (1.3cm) remaining wax to prevent overheating and damage to the container or surface
Votive candles (smaller candles designed to burn quickly and melt easily due to their low melting point):
do not burn without a holder
match the size of the container to the width of the candle (ignore 70/30 rule) so the wax doesn’t spread out, to prolong burn time
place a teaspoon of water in the holder to aid wax removal after burning (also prolongs the life of your container)
Surrounds
turn candle periodically in rooms with unavoidable air movement so it burns more evenly and reduces smoking
burn candle at least 10cm (4 inch) from other candles or heat sources
do not burn a candle in a chipped or cracked container as heat can shatter the weakened material
do not burn within 2ft of flammable materials especially when burning for a long time
Storage
To avoid fading, cracking or melting, store candles ...
in a cool, dry place
out of direct sunlight or fluorescent light
away from dust
in an upright position
Cleaning
Place containers in the freezer to help shrink and more-easily remove wax buildup.
Clean Up Spilt Wax
Allow the wax to harden, cover with paper towel or newspaper, and press with an iron on low heat. The paper will absorb the wax.
If coloured wax has stained the surface, look into other means of clean up after lifting wax to remove the stain.
Blackened Glass
Extinguish the candle and wait for the wax and glass container to completely cool before removing the black marks with a dry paper towel. Keeping the wick trimmed will help limit this.
Treat candle wax fires like an oil or gas fire!
Starve oxygen supply by ...
using CO2 or powder extinguishers, or a bucket of sand
covering with a fireproof container (eg. steel pan) to seal off air flow
if it’s a small fire, covering the flames in baking soda (do NOT use any other kitchen ingredients such as flour - EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE)
do NOT extinguish with water as it causes wax to spread or splash
Soy wax has a lower melt point and so burns slightly cooler than paraffin wax.
🔴 If you suffer from a wax burn, treat like a normal burn. Some tips:
run the burned area under cool (NOT cold) water for ~20 minutes
do not apply ice directly to skin
use an antibacterial ointment
cover burn in aloe vera
see a medical professional

Anyway, daily reminder from a culturally isolated Romani person.
Gypsy does not mean wanderer.
It literally means ‘people from egypt’ or similar, as europeans believed Romani people were from Egypt. It has become known similar to nomad due to how our ancestors have been forced to be nomadic due to racism and ostracization, but it is a SLUR.
Romani people are STILL being forcibly sterilized.
Romani people are STILL being forced into ghettos.
Romani people are still facing violence and danger in countless European countries- and recently, I’ve seen the beginnings of the extremes in the United States.
Have a little fucking respect and DON’T USE A SLUR THAT’S BEEN USED FOR CENTURIES AGAINST US.
And for the love of whatever’s up there, ESPECIALLY do not use it to describe your witchcraft. It is playing on the ‘magic gypsy’ trope, and is EXTREMELY insulting.
non romani people, please reblog this.
