Sometimes It Hurts

I.

We were in seventh grade and halfway through January. The month we finally figured out how to inhale exhaust fumes from the school bus without choking. When our lungs learned to accept   that getting what you want doesn’t always feel good.

II.

I dared a beautiful brown boy to lick a metal pole because I wanted to see if it was really like the movies. He said I owed him a kiss after a tiny piece of his tongue came away with the pole. It was guilty and sweet. I tasted his blood in my mouth and asked him why he did it. He said he’d wanted to kiss me for a long time,  and getting what you want doesn’t always feel good.

III.

There are lessons you learn over and over until they stick. Tell me I’m doing the right thing by letting you go. I want so much joy for you, and you don’t have it with me. Maybe you’re better off on your own. Yeah, I finally get it now – sometimes it hurts. And getting what you want doesn’t always feel good.
