The Kitan Club No. 7 July 1961
The iconic Japanese rope bondage magazine that defined contemporary kinbaku.
Alongside Yomikiri Romance, The Kitan Club was one of the first magazines to premiere tight-binding and nude photography in the early 1950s
The first public use of SM terms ‘kinbaku’ and ‘kinbaku model’ was in Kitan Club second quarter 1952.
Founded and run by Yoshida Minoru, chief magazine editor. Published October 1947 - March 1975, in total of 325 monthly numbers plus special editions and photo books. Revived by Shigeru Kayama – kinbakushi and Oniroku Dan collaborator – March 1982 - January 1983.
Kinbakushi: Master Takashi Tsujimura. The influential Toshiyuki Suma as Minomura Kou – co-founder of 1970s kinbaku monthlies SM Select, S&M Collector. Veiled beyond The Kitan Club’s beautiful yet anonymous front covers lies a secret and forbidden world.
An innovative brand of ropes and sadomasochism with contributions from Seiu Ito, John Willie, Chimuo Nureki, Oniroku Dan. In annotated SM-inquiries, pictures, illustrations and genre short stories; The Kitan Club communicate a progressive liberal identity that defy societal norms and gender stereotypes.
Look to the spell-binding martyrdom portrayed in Tetsuzo Tsukamoto’s artisan tight-binding and harakiri photography, or the transcending heretic art by Reiko Kita, Suk, Takashi Shima, Asaji Muroi and Namio Harukawa. All works, that with intensity and passion communicate the essence of kinbaku and sadomasochism. Among said, Where Frost Reign find Shima-san’s infame depictions most sadistic. His cruel and piercing ‘seme-e’ – imagery of sadism and sexual assault – is only surpassed by master artist and kinbaku sensei Seiu Ito.
The Kitan Club magazine comes highly recommended. A mandatory title for collectors and kinbaku enthusiasts – to individuals active in the arts as well as graphic design.
