I was on my way to a photoshoot this afternoon when this woman comes up very close to my face, makes direct eye contact (stare down) with me and says “You’re not from here. Go back to communist China bitch.” I was honestly shocked and didn’t really know how to react.

This video is us confronting her and she starts to yell that she’s being assaulted when we clearly didn’t touch her at all. She yells at us to be left alone after she was the one instigating all this by yelling racist slurs to us first.

After the initial heated confrontation, we start walking away and she yells out of the cab “Go back to communist China bitch!” once again (probably expecting that the cab driver will drive away). So we confront her again. When we ask “Did you just tell us “go to communist China bitch”?! She replies “Well isn’t that where you’re from?” I think that just says it all right there - why are you saying these racist things when you don’t know where we’re from? But more importantly why are you saying this to people AT ALL??

Cab driver tries to tell her to get out of the cab. She tells him that she’ll pay him double to get out of there. We mention that she’s on camera and starts covering her face. At this point, I want to make sure people know there is zero tolerance for this type of behavior and cannot be condoned.

this is absolutely disgusting. the fact that people like this are going up to innocent people walking down the street and yelling racist shit like “go back to communist china” to people who have lived in this country their whole life. people who have worked just as hard, probably even harder, to make a life for themselves in this country. people who do not deserve to be judged and harassed for their appearance. people who should not be put in a box and blamed as scapegoats for the spread of a virus.

if you are non asian and you see something like this happening when you are in public, do not be silent. do not just walk past like nothing is happening. step in. confront them. record. let them know that they are being watched.

asian friends, please be careful when you’re in public. travel with others when you can, text a loved one and tell them where you’re going. stay vigilant. stay safe.
