28 Reasons why swimming is the worst, but the message of the video is after the reasons. 1- We were not born with scales, gills or fins. 2- Our fingers and toes are not webbed. 3- We evolved out of the water and swimmers insist in going back, why? 4- Swimming is repetitive. 5- It is boring to watch a competition if you don’t know the swimmers. 6- Half of the time even the coaches get bored watching the swimmers. 7- The pools are dirty if they don’t have enough chlorine. 8- And when they do have enough, you have to wear silly swim caps, otherwise your hair turns greenish. 9- Your skin gets dry after being in the chemical water for too long. 10- The swim cap is always a little too tight. 11- Most of your body is exposed. 12- You could drink water accidentally. 13- You don’t have a solid floor to rely on in order to move. 14- The overhead repetitive movement of the arms causes a lot of shoulder injuries in most of the strokes. While breaststrokers injure their knees. 15- The better you swim, the more distance you have to swim to stay in shape, because your muscles do a little less effort per lap. 16- Because of entropy, you burn more calories in the water than in land, so it is harder to recover. 17- You live in a state of soreness if you swim twice a day, which most competitive swimmers do. 18- You have to get up early for morning practice. 19- You can’t talk much with your teammates while you are working out. 20- Goggles ALWAYS get foggy or water gets in them. 21- The competitive swim suits are expensive and extremely tight. 22- You train a lot for just seconds or a few minutes of competition. 23- You can’t see your competitors very clearly. 24- When people cheer it is almost impossible for the swimmer to hear. 25- I can only think of sychro and swimming as the only two sports where you have to hold your breath while doing something difficult. I mean I guess surfing too, but common. And at least in synchro they have underwater music. 26- It’s not a popular sport to watch outside of the olympics, therefore, there isn’t a lot of money for the pro swimmers. 27- The time you have to put in makes it difficult to have friends outside of the swimming community. 28- Some people say it is pointless and not even a real sport… So let’s see, if sports are, as hank green said it so beautifully “a celebration of human skill and intellect and hard work and perseverance.” Then swimming has to be … one of my favorite ways of celebrating that. On this video we will go over some freestyle technique movements you can do to create more mind body connections that will help you not only remember the swimming movements, if you haven’t been swimming in a while, but will also help you with strength, coordination and mobility. To swim faster you need to be a little taller. To do that, stand very close to the wall, with one arm up, and standing on tip toes, reach high. Now rotate your body and reach even higher. This is why rotating in freestyle is very important. It makes you longer. Do 10 with each side holding the stretch 2 seconds. While you are there record yourself doing this. We want to remain in a small area. Do 20 stroke cicles with shoulder rotation. Try to keep your elbow high. Both when your are going down and while going up. This will work your back muscles and will help your muscles remember how to swim with good technique. To pull more water you need your hand and forearm to be perpendicular with the water. To keep the muscle memory of the high elbow when pulling, try this 10 to 20 times with each arm. Stand a foot apart from the wall. Touch the wall with your elbow and with the appropriate torso rotation, move your hand down without moving or separating the elbow from the wall. To increase the pulling strength put your shoes on your hands. Lay down and start pulling with one arm at a time. To increase resistance use a rougher floor or push down a little harder. Do 20 slides with each arm. To maintain a horizontal position in the water it is very important to calibrate your horizontal balance and engage the lower back and glutes. So lay face down. Do 10 leg lifts activating the glutes first and then the lower back and hamstrings. This will also help if you have lower back pain. You have heard me say this a thousand times, that in freestyle it is very important that you have your ankles in plantar flexion. But it is not enough to have flexible ankles though, you need mobility. Meaning you also need strength on these plantar muscles and the calves muscles. Sit down and point your toes as far as you can, slowly. Hold it 1 second and come back. Do that 20 times with each foot. This is also the reason we get cramps, because we are not strong enough to maintain that position for as long as we are swimming. To improve the speed and technique of your kick we can do this. Put a pillow on the ground and lay down at a height where you can kick down on it. Time yourself and see how many kicks you can do in 30 seconds. Count each time either leg touches the pillow. My high score is … Finally to work on the streamline and shoulder mobility, do this. With your ankles on plantar flexion, without lifting your knees off the ground and with your arms on a tight streamline do 10 to 20 sit ups. By the end you will see why I think backstroke is the easiest swimming stroke to learn and yet the most exhausting and difficult to master for a lot of people. The First part is a demonstration of me doing a 50 meters backstroke at full speed. 1- Demo The next part of the video is very important to reduce the risk of getting injured and to learn to swim faster. 2- Do not do this!: Straight arm No rotation Crossing hands Bending the knees or hips Wrong synchronization 3- Easy to learn; hard to master: If you want to swim under 30 seconds you need to do these four things right besides swimming backstroke correctly. a)- As you saw me do, you need to swim at least half of it underwater, doing dolphin kicks. Don’t worry we will go over some exercises to help you swim underwater dolphin kicks on the next section. b)- You’ll also need to have a great break out, meaning the transition between dolphin kicks and backstroke. c)- You’ll need a fast flip turn. d)- You’ll need a good backstroke start. 4- Breaking :30 a)- What is a good dolphin kick? Good dolphin kicks are actually faster than backstroke swimming. They require a lot of practice and core strength. But keep these 3 things in mind to make your journey easier: I)- Use a nose plug or your upper lip to keep you from exhaling all your air and from water getting into your nose. II)- Keep your big toes touching at all times. If that is a problem, you can get a stretch band and wrap it around your ankles to practice. III)- Kick forwards and backwards with almost the same intensity. Remember that in a race it is allowed to do dolphins kicks for 15 meters after each turn or after the start. There is usually a different color disk to help you identify where the 15 meters is. b)- What is a good breakout? A good breakout is when you don’t waist any time transitioning from underwaters to backstroke. Remember that when you do the first stroke your other arm must remain in the streamline position. Keep in mind that to do a good breakout you need to transition close to the surface and don’t have to come up at a sharp angle. c)- What is a good flip-turn? This flip turn is hard to get it right because you need to know exactly how many strokes you do from the flags to before you turn. Remember that the rules allow for the last stroke to be a freestyle stroke. Also you may continue kicking if you are too far apart from the wall. Don’t slow down before the turn and push deep so you can do your dolphin kicks. d)- What is a good backstroke start? The backstroke starts have been changing these last years. Now the FINA rules allow for a wedge that helps swimmers push higher and farther, essentially doing backwards dive. The optimal initial position is slightly different for everyone as you can see here. But nowadays everyone starts with almost their whole body outside the water, except for their feet. This is faster because by being up like this you only have to focus on pushing backwards and not up and back like before the wedge. Arch your back and try to enter with your whole body in a small circle. 5- Do these: These 17 exercises are some of my favorite backstroke exercises that will help you swim faster no matter what your level of swimming is.
