[Caroline Deleted]
the post i had planned is going to be late for Caroline Appreciation Day, so heres a random thought i had instead:
people have various interpretations of glados' "caroline deleted" spiel at the end of portal 2.
maybe she did actually delete some part of her programming or memories, and she can finally break away from her past. or maybe she didnt delete anything, maybe glados and caroline are one and the same, and the whole thing was just for show.
regardless, glados makes it dramatic.
she wants to make it very clear to chell, who has unintentionally taken a tour through old aperture, that whatever/whoever she witnessed down there is long dead. its a way of telling her, "there is nothing left for you here, nobody to come back for."
but chell is stubborn. even as players, we dive back into the game in search of the portrait of a lady and her unused voice lines.

@soundsofastar You’re so right we can’t forget about that
you literally can’t convince me that Portal 2 isn’t literature. there’s heavy use of allegory and symbolism. there’s a ghost haunting the walls. two of the most interesting characters are women who barely speak. there’s allusions to greek mythology. there’s an arrogant man talking you to death. there’s classical music (briefly). it ponders what it means to be human and proposes that mankind’s hubris will lead to its downfall. the moon is there
and also its kinda extremely gay but in a repressed angsty way

The moral of Portal is that if you mistreat women, the moon will get your ass.
There are two men in this duology, both of whom mistreat women, and the moon gets both of their asses.

@ the portal fandom, why is there so much white washed fanart of Chell. I luckily don’t see as much from more recent fanworks of her, but I’ve come across one too many where she’s as white as I am 😭

i LOVE the idea of "i can't win, but you can lose" in fictional confrontations it is SO fucking tasty. the human nature to self destruct and the human nature to survive by any means necessary combined at its finest.

The combination of 'unnervingly flawless self-control' with 'occasional tendency to engage in reckless, dangerous, and borderline self-destructive or death-seeking behaviour' in a character is SUCH catnip to me

Talking to people about your characters really is a game changer. You'll start saying things about them you didn't even know you knew.

eroticism of the machine this, eroticism of the machine that. what about the AROMANTICISM of the machine. what about the electric comfort of looking at a beautiful turbine engine and knowing that it is just like you. what about the urge to cut open your chest to prove your heart is made of wires and your ribs are made of steel. what about that
