I am still finding myself without the time/energy to get regular posts going over here again yet, but!  If anyone was worried about my noodles, they are both doing well!  We have to leave them both alone for sheds right now, but here are pictures of them from last week.

Hi friends!  I have let the queue run rather ridiculously out, and there isn’t really a good reason for it.  Both Jormie and Morty are still doing well, and I will set up some posts to start running a couple-ish times a week again... erm... sometime soon.  I hope.  Thank you for your patience!

Hi! Since you seem to have a lot of experience with snakes, I have a question. I’ve searched up handling and saw a website that said you can only handle snakes once a week/once every two weeks. It seems a bit excessive, so is this true, or can you handle snakes more often then that? Thank you!
Hello!  This is one of those “it depends” questions, to be honest.  My experience is with ball pythons only, as well, so if you’re concerned about another sort, then it would be safer to assume that this isn’t accurate for that species.
It mostly depends on two things: A) the individual snake, and B) the acclimatization you’ve done already.  I would say that once or twice a week is a good starting point, and only for a few minutes each time -- fewer than ten, probably more like five.  Gently hold the noodle, let it squirm around a little if it wants, and keep an eye on its body language; if it starts getting extra-coily, then you may want to pop it back into its home.
Over time, the handlings can be increased in both frequency and length, as long as the individual snake is still up for it.  For a while, I was handling Jormungandr every couple of days, for upward of a half-hour each time.  He was content to noodle slowly around on my arms the whole time, and I had worked him up to it, so all was well.  Mortimer is more timid, and even if I currently had the time to do that much snake-handling, I don’t think he would work up to quite the same level.
It’s a process to build up their experience and trust, and they’ll do a lot of the work of telling you how okay they are with coming out for playtimes, if you’re able to recognize and respond to those signals.
Note that handlings shouldn’t happen for about 48 hours after a meal.  If needed, you can gently move the snake around to e.g. get at something in the enclosure that needs to be cleaned up, but no having them out just to spend time with them.  Their little tummies will be full!
And, again, this is all ball-python-specific.  I know almost nothing about other species!
Good luck!

A little man is out for a perambulation around his home!

Yes, I know.  Shh.
[Image descriptions are a little odd for a photo blog, I think, but description of the third image: a screenshot of a Google result for the word “perambulate”.  It shows that the Merriam-Webster definition emphasizes traveling on foot, specifically.  Snakes don’t have feet!  I don’t care.  He’s still perambulating.]

Mortimer’s eyes do this thing at night, where the light from over his tank pools in the bottoms of his irises like it’s filling them up with gold.  I enjoy it.

Hello! I was wondering if you could measure Jormie's circumference at his thickest for me? I want to make a ball python plush for myself but I cannot for the life of me find complete measurements for a ball python :o Having his length would be helpful but not necessary! Thank you!
This is an interesting question!  I don’t think I’m going to have an opportunity to actually measure him in anything resembling a timely manner, judging from how long it’s been already since I got this ask (note: four days and counting).  But I know he’s very roughly as big around as my wrist (I think a little bigger), and my wrist measures up just ‘bout smack dab at 7 inches.  So there you go!
Length is slightly easier, because he was four-foot-seven a year ago, and probably not much longer than that now.
Jormie is a large child!

A good squirmy boy at the vet!  He appeared to think that he could slither away while the vet was out of the room.  In this he was mistaken.
