It was clear that Temari was pleased with his efforts, his shoulders instantly relaxing as he concluded that he'd dodged another one of her temper tantrums. The woman was unpredictable, and whether that was a blessing or a curse was still a mystery to him. After all previous tries at seducing the woman through sweetness had proved to be unsuccessful, but then again, he'd made those efforts when she was more pent up about other issues. Now, she was free of duty for the night and Shikamaru couldn't help but smile. Yes, Temari would enjoy herself at least this once.
Digging into his food, the Nara raised his brows, surprised by his own cooking. It had never been extraordinary, only decent, but this meal was proving to be his best yet. I'll have to thank mom for helping me out with the recipe, he thought as he chewed.
"Tell me about your day," he prompted, wanting to deduce the amount of silence they had to endure in their home. He usually didn't mind the comfortable quiet, but without Karura's laughter, crying, or snoring in the background, it felt odd and, though he wouldn't admit it, he felt uncomfortable. Surely his girlfriend's voice could aid that.
Overdue Anniversary Celebration
Sighing as she sat down and waited for his answer as to why.. he pulled all of this out of his backside. Lips pursed at first as she noted the smile, was for the fact she had no idea why Shikamaru would go to such efforts. Either way his statement caused her to blink in surprise, anniversary..? Frowning for a slight moment as she made.. the mental calculations in her head to confirm his words. “What do you know.." She mumbled, with Karura keeping her busy she’d never given a second thought to the fact they’d been together for this long.
Eyes softening for a moment as she looked fondly at Shikamaru, she would have never figured he’d be the type. Chuckling lightly as she brushed strands of hair behind her ear before picking up her own chopsticks. “I’m impressed, Shika, over the fact you managed to remember and that you made the effort to be bothered ‘celebrating.’" Flashing her partner a cheeky smirk, any other occasion she would object furiously but it wouldn’t hurt.. this once to let him spoil her as he said.

Despite being a man who adored lazily gazing at clouds during the day, the night was probably Shikamaru's most preferred time of day. The shadows grew to their full lengths and were easily manipulated at the vulnerable hour, and while he was never one to brag about his strength, the Leaf ninja couldn't help but smirk to himself as he made a fist, power surging through his veins as he silently scaled the desert.
Lady Tsunade had entrusted him with the boring mission of bringing the Kazekage some scrolls regarding their alliance. How many times had he crossed the vast desert to do a task much like this? Too many times, he decided. Too bad he couldn't stay in the Leaf village and stretch his shadow so far and use it to bring it in his place. A sigh escaped the Nara's lips as he shook his head at the absurd delusion. Holding a jutsu that stretched that far for that long would drain him, and that would be quite troublesome for the already non-energetic chūnin.
Breaking free of his mindless inner banter, Shikamaru found himself at the gates of Sunagakure, the desert village's stop luminescence indicating that it was humming with life. It was late, much past the regular kids' bedtimes, so Shikamaru didn't expect anyone to be waiting for him at the gate. If I'd left sooner, maybe I'd be let in and could find a place to stay and--
A rustling in the shadows caught his attention, his heightened senses leading his eyes towards the peak of a tall building. There, he caught the silhouette of a person, and if he was correct...
"Gaara?" he called, cursing himself for using such a loud voice in the dead of the night.
Online [Open Starter]
It was late, the pitch black sky illuminated only by faint stars, twinkling dazzlingly in the very far distance. Seated atop the roof of the Sunagakure administrative building sat the Kazekage, somberly silent as he gazed intently with his sea foam orbs into the night, watching his sleeping village from above.
With a soft hum of the power sources, the village suddenly became illuminated, tall street lights lazily flickering on to reveal the paths and roads that made up the sand village. The red head gave a small smile in relief, yet his black rimmed eyes still retained the sane tired bored look.
It had been a horrible night for the young man. A nightmare had plagued his slumber moments after he was lulled to sleep, and quite frankly, he now had no desire to return to his bed. Instead, he had taken to perching himself on the tallest building in his village, where he could watch his citizens, stare down at those who deserved to be stared down at, and protect those that deserved to be protected.
Sighing, Gaara closed his eyes for a short moment. The sand was rustling about in the wind nervously, so slightly that he usually wouldn’t notice, and he had a feeling that someone was approaching.

Shikamaru led her towards the dinner table, motioning for her to take the seat opposite his. As he sat down and leaned back against the chair, he gave a soft smile at her confusion.
"It's our anniversary," he stated bluntly, a hand reaching up to rub the back of his neck. "Or it was. I think. I don't exactly remember the specific date in which we decided to be an official couple or whatever, but I do remember that it was around this time, or rather, a bit before it." He shrugged his shoulders as he picked up his chopsticks, his eyes glancing down at the delicious meal he had prepared for him and his lover before glancing up at Temari, admiring the way the candlelight made her bright, teal eyes darken in colour and call upon something more sultry and seductive.
"Anyway, I thought it'd be nice to celebrate, considering all that we've been through. I know you would've been opposed on any other day, but since Karura is out of our hair for the night and you deserve to be spoiled once in a while... Let's just say, I got off my ass for once."
Overdue Anniversary Celebration
The blonde couldn’t help but raise a brow at the dark haired male, sighing softly as she couldn’t help but reach out for his hand, after all there was no reason to refuse such a gesture. Even more so when his sweet actions reminded her just why she had to fall for such a guy in the first place. Soft smile on her lips as she was pulled into his chest, content to hide against him for a moment before she frowned looking up at her Nara.
"Cliche, huh?" Confused for a moment, he was right about that. She had no idea why he would.. go to all this effort. Even as she pursed her lips she shrugged, if he’d almost forgotten it she doubted she was going to figure it out any time soon.  After all it was as he said, she wasn’t one for.. cliche couple whatever. The man knew her better than herself sometimes, luckily for him she wasn’t annoyed by that fact tonight. Too curious over his whole.. candle lit dinner set up. “What can I say, nothing comes to mind. You said it yourself, Nara." This just wasn’t her area of expertise. It never had been something she had cared for.

The sand ninja turned the corner with her hair falling over her shoulders, just as he had wanted and Shikamaru couldn't help but smirk at his handiwork. It wasn't often he used his shadows to do such mediocre tasks such as unbinding her tails, but seeing as he'd wanted to stay put and strip her of some of her terrifying demeanour at the same time, he thought that now was a better time than ever to try his shadow hands at some more simpler chores.
"You could say that," he replied, unfolding his arms to bring a hand out, inviting her to take it so he could lead her to his chest. "I can't expect you to know the occasion since one, a woman such as yourself probably doesn't care about something so cliche and two, I almost forgot about it myself." The Nara was choosing to be mysterious about his reason for setting up the surprise for his girlfriend, but sooner than later the reason would make itself known. "You have any guesses? Or should I just tell you so you can go ahead and eat, hmm?"
Overdue Anniversary Celebration
Frowning at first as she spotted the Nara’s jitsu sighing as she was lead to the dining table. Of course this was why he’d put candles everywhere, typical lazy ass, leaving his ‘shadows’ to do the work for him. Having her hair let down by the element in his influence causing the faintest of blushes to rise to her cheeks. Of course Shikamaru had seen her plenty of times with more than her hair down but still, it irritated her that he could make her so.. vulnerable without lifting much more than a finger.
"Have to say, Nara, outdoing yourself tonight, huh?" She muttered as her eyes settled on her Shikamaru for the briefest of moments before taking in what he’d set up while she’d been out. The food on the table and candles on every surface he could find by the looks of it. Sighing softly for a moment as a faint smile rose to her lips. This man always surprising her, even more so when he’d put blatantly obvious into something for someone so.. lazy.

"Oi, Shika...?"
A smirk played at his lips at the sound of his lover's voice. She was confused, just as he had anticipated she would be, by the dim lighting of their home and lone candle that stood near the entryway. His eyes cast over the various candles that lit up their living space, the shadows they created merging with one another and bouncing from surface to surface. Shikamaru was in his element in this setting, more so than ever, what with all the shaded figures surrounding him, practically begging him to use his jutsu to will them to his liking.
The usually lazy Nara formed simple hand gestures and summoned two shadow hands to appear from the floor. Mentally, he instructed them to lead his woman to the dining area and relieve her of the hair ties that kept her menacing, spiky ponytails in tact. He wanted her as she was; a raw woman, free of appearance aid and guarded expressions. What he desired most was for her to be at ease and truly herself, because how many times does a hard working woman, as well as a mother, have time to relax? The number could be counted on one hand.
Overdue Anniversary Celebration
A night without having to get up at three in the morning to deal with blundering baby was something Temari had been looking forward too ever since her partners mother offered to take little Karura off of her hands. The idea appealed even more when her stupid pineapple head seemed more than enthusiastic about the idea.
Having dropped the infant off with whatever she needed and taking off before she changed her mind about how this was a great idea cause uninterrupted sleep and everything else that came with having no baby to worry about.
More than happily making her way back home, only to be mildly surprised when she closed the door behind her to a small candle sitting on the small side table that sat by the door. “Oi, Shika..?" Calling out a little unsure to start with before she sighed and cautiously walked off to the living area.
She figured he’d get up to something but.. candles? And everywhere at that.

Overdue Anniversary Celebration
What Temari lacked in girlish femininity, she made up for in wit. And for someone was sarcastic and snarky as Shikamaru was acclaimed to be, he wouldn't have her any other way.
Except for maybe tonight.
It had been some time since they'd become an item, the stress of early parenthood forcing them to bring their relationship to a mature state way before they were ready. Of course, being the strong-willed and tactical shinobi they were, they had managed and succeeded greatly and had a bundle of joy to show for it. Yes, in the midst of the chaos that was their relationship, they found happiness. It was only expected for them to celebrate.
As Shikamaru placed candles on practically every surface he could find in their home and placed the salmon teriyaki on each of their respective areas at the dining table, the shadow ninja stood back and admired his work. He was never one to go all out for anyone, let alone his girlfriend, but a celebration was in need for their success as a couple. It was only natural to go through such lengths.
Yes, if Temari were more girlish and had a weakness for such surprises, her reaction would be beyond priceless. The dark haired male shook his head, chuckling to himself.
Then she wouldn't be Temari at all, now would she?

From the porch, Shikamaru gave a groan and heaved himself up from his napping position, yawning loudly as he adjusted his ponytail. Long past were the days where he could simply ignore his woman when she was calling for him. Since the arrival of their bundle of joy, he found that he couldn't brush off his woman and his daughter--who did turn out to have Temari's teal coloured eyes--just because he wanted to nap. It was a sacrifice if he'd ever made one, but it was one he didn't mind making, especially if it meant he got to spend more time with his daughter.
He walked inside to find the pair in the living room, the baby girl snug in her mother's arms. The Nara smiled at the sight of them as he neared, walking towards the back of the seat in which Temari was sitting before he wrapped his arms over her shoulders and kissed her cheek.
"I'm here," he announced, stating the obvious. He watched as little Karura turned her gaze towards him, her eyes impossibly large and full of wonderment before they became squinted as she smile. Tiny hands grabbed at the air for him and he gladly complied, craning his neck to place a kiss on her head. As he pulled back he gave a whiff of the air, the undeniable stench of waste filling his nostrils. He made a face at this which resulted in the little girl laughing, clapping her hands together. "Troublesome kid," he said.
To Be A Family || sshikamaru
Balancing the infant in one arm, while the other was occupied holding the bottle young Karura eagerly suckled from as Temari made her way through from one room to the other before settling herself down in the living area, holding the babe close as she kicked her little feet out in the air.
It had only been a handful of weeks since Shikamaru came home with the two of them, the tiny baby that she first held in her arms now a not so tiny baby. Looking down at her with a loving smile, Karura’s eyes a reflection of her own. Never would she have thought it possible to hold so much love in her heart for anyone, let alone both Shikamaru and their child.
Still as cute and adorable as Karura was, didn’t mean Temari wasn’t going to shove on diaper duty to Shikamaru, most of the time at least. Once she was down with the bottle and Temari had burped her she sighed, lifting her up eyes level. “… Let’s go find daddy so he can clean your stinky bum, huh~?” Plus this counted as some form of revenge for the nine months of pregnancy, even if there was nothing on earth she’d trade the result of those months for now it was amusing. She was sure with the way the little girl laughed and giggled she thought it was amusing too.
“Oi, Shika! Get your lazy bum in here, diaper time.”

Shikamaru silently nodded as he held his hands out, taking the bundle that was their little nudger into his arms with ease. Her weight was good; not too heavy and not too light. He stared at his daughter, balancing her in one arm so he could poke at her chubby cheeks with the other. She stirred slightly, her little brows furrowing at his prodding and he smiled in return. Karura was just too cute. "I can't wait until she opens her eyes," he whispered, leaning in to nuzzle her with his nose. "I hope she has your eyes, Temari."
Turning to his girlfriend, he gave a once over to her form, her whole position screaming out the exhaustion she was probably feeling. "You should go to sleep. We'll be here in the morning."
Birth is Troublesome
Staring at him for a moment before she sighed. Doing her best to ignore the fact that her cheeks took on soft pink hues in a light blush as he hovered over her ear. Temari had to admit, not out loud of course, that she did quite like.. the sound of that. Not that she was ever going to let Shikamaru in on it, then he wouldn’t stop bugging her about it. Rolling her eyes before she muttered, partly to Karura but mostly Shikamaru. “Your father is silly. Don’t listen to anything he ever tells you.. or you’ll end up just as thick as him.”
Unable to help but laugh lightly before she yawned, just.. how tired everything made her hitting her again. “Do you want to hold her?” She asked quietly, right now she’d be more than happy to just watch them, her whole body aching from exhaustion, as much as she wanted to keep cradling her in her arms she was still pretty goddamned sore.

Shikamaru knew that their little moment of peace wouldn't last long, as always. But instead of groaning, he gave his lover and supposed wife a lazy smirk. "The nurse who was instructing me to register you called you my wife and well, I went with it... And I'm glad I did. I doubt the nurses would as nice as they have been if they knew you were just my girlfriend. You know how adults are... They look down upon sex, let along pregnancies, out of wedlock. Besides," Shikamaru leaned in to kiss Temari's forehead before hovering over her ear. "Temari Nara has a nice ring to it."
He didn't voice his plan for the future. Now wasn't the time. She had gone through enough tonight and his contemplation for their future together as a family could wait. But he couldn't help but smile to himself as he thought of tying the knot with the blonde woman. Sure, they had a long way to go, but he couldn't imagine himself loving another woman the way he loved Temari. Besides, when had there ever been a woman who was as intelligent and patient with his lazy personality besides his mother?
Birth is Troublesome
“She is..” She muttered in agreement, happily gazing upon little, newly named, Karura in her arms as the nurse spoke. That time she noticed, it was hard not too Mrs. Nara? Since when was she Mrs. Nara… ugh it made her sound old.. Still she waited until the nurse was gone, not really wanting to speak or do anything just yet. Partly due to still being in wonder over their little girl, finding it hard to believe that they had.. made her. Of course she was perfect though, Temari did all the hard work.
After long moments of silence Temari spoke up quietly and.. suprisingly calmly not wanting to disturb Karura as she still squirmed about in the bundle. “Shikamaru..” She started pausing for a moment as the infant made.. little gurgling baby noises. Ugh, she was too much. “Since on earth when have I been, Mrs. Nara?” Unless he’d gotten them married some bloody how without her knowing.. she had no idea.

Karura.
The name seemed as if it were destined to be bestowed upon their child, the three-syllable word bouncing around in his mind, leaving a trail of joyous sunshine in its wake. "Karura," he breathed, liking the way it sounded when he said it. "Karura..." he repeated. He stroked her plump cheek with a finger and smiled brightly to himself, displaying the genuine happiness he felt. His eyes lifted to meet Temari's, noting her own smile. "It's perfect." He looked back down to their child. "She's perfect."
The nurse had watched the whole decision and its conclusion and nodded at the couple. "Karura is a beautiful name, Mr. and Mrs. Nara," she commented. "I'll go finish up the papers then and leave you for a while. I'll be back in an hour or so to check up on you and the baby, alright Mrs. Nara?" she said. Shikamaru nodded to the nurse.
"Thank you," he said, dismissing her. He watched as she walked out of the room until the door shut behind her. He turned his attention back to their child before he gave Temari a kiss on the cheek. Karura's name still echoed in his mind like a soft melody and he made no attempt to stop it. Of course he knew its origin. He knew well the name of Temari's mother, a woman that she loved deeply. He was glad she settled with her name.
Birth is Troublesome
Of course she was right, she was always right. If she wasn’t so absorbed in the tiny infant in her arms she would have voiced that fact that he should know well by now. Glancing at Shikamaru for a moment as he rested his head on her shoulder, leaning her own head towards hers instinctively with a faint smile.
Watching his hand brush over their baby’s head, unable to help but notice the short but noticeably dark strands. “Stupid.. she was going to get something from you either way…”
When the nurse returned she didn’t take too much notice in what she was saying, just.. the things that seemed important. Luckily for Shikamaru. Nodding absent mindedly, expecting that they’d have to stay for a day or two, but still there was the matter of.. naming her.
Eyes glancing to Shikamaru, smirking slightly for a moment. Either way she was going to claim the naming rights, she was going to milk this whole child birth thing for as long as she could. Just because she could. Lips set in a tight line as she looked down at the infant again, tilting her head a little. Of course she’d thought over names before today but now, one seemed to stick and that already fit their child. “— Karura.” Glancing at Shikamaru for a moment with a small smile.

Shikamaru rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. You were right..." Their earlier bets didn't matter the slightest as he watched their daughter be handed to his girlfriend and her mother. During the entirety of their relationship... Hell, during the entirety of his knowledge of Temari's existence, he'd never imagined her to hold a baby like this, let alone his baby. But that's exactly what she was doing and she looked radiant doing so. Somehow, having the spitfire blonde cradle a newborn looked... right. But he wouldn't say this. He'd risk a punch in the gut. So he sat quiet as he watched Temari, her face displaying the awe she felt as she held their daughter.
"She is quite tiny, isn't she..." he said softly, nearing Temari and resting his head atop her shoulder. He reached up to brush the back of his hand gingerly over the infant's head, noting the short hairs that were impossibly soft to the touch. They were dark brown, like his own hair, and this made him smile. "For a second I was scared she wouldn't look like me at all," he whispered to himself, running through the tresses again and again, completely mesmerized by the texture.
A nurse returned, the same nurse that had spoken to him about his mother, and quietly approached him and his small family. "Have you thought of a name for her, Mr. and Mrs. Nara?" she asked, her voice not too loud, careful not to surprise the baby. "We need to fill out the papers and all that's left is her name. After that, Mrs. Nara," she nodded to Temari. "We'll to keep you here for a day or two to make sure you're recovering normally. Your daughter must stay with you as well. We have to run a few tests to make sure she's healthy and we'll schedule a check up a month later." She clasped her hands behind her back as she waited for Shikamaru and Temari to name their tiny child.
"Well, since you are the one who carried her for so long and pushed her out, you have naming rights," he said, knowing that even if he hadn't said it, she'd decide it on her own anyway. He completely ignored the fact that the nurse had revealed his little secret, hoping that Temari hadn't caught it.
Birth is Troublesome
Everything seemed to calm down, although her heart was taking it’s sweet time to stop pounding in her ears as she lay there attempting to recover from the whole ordeal; of course though, she knew it would take more than just a few moments. Still one could hope..
Faintly hearing snippets of conversation between Shikamaru and one of the many nurses. Not bothering to move or open her eyes till she felt the Nara’s hands run through her hair. “Exhausted..” Mumbling, voice hoarse with all the yelling and cursing. She..? Eyes fluttering open as she looked to Shikamaru as he rambled, unable to help but give her own soft laugh before she smirked lazily up at her partner. “Told you.. she was a girl.”
Someone had to say it, and of course it was going to be her. Still as she lay there being cleaned up she couldn’t help but grow anxious to see her, listening to her shrill cries with a small frown as she grew impatient. Just because she gave birth didn’t mean that was changing any time soon.
Before long the nurses that were cleaning her up had dispersed and she was allowed to move to a more comfortable position. While nurse that had Shikamaru cut the cord and taken their child off to clean her up and go through everything else that was needed was back, the little girl still crying as she squirmed about in the blanket she’d been wrapped in.
Temari’s eyes wide in awe as she was given the newborn, skin still all shrivelled and pink but any bloody residue was gone. Carefully cradling her in her arms carefully as if she might break any moment, for once speechless. “Shika.. look at her.. She’s so….. small.” The first words that rolled off her tongue, it was a struggle enough to managed those. Somehow managing to tear her eyes away from the baby to Shikamaru with a wide grin.

"Congratulations! It's a girl!"
Shikamaru continued to stare at his hand, whitened where Temari's grip had once been, the outline of her fingers evident. The pain throbbed but it was nothing he couldn't handle, but an ice pack or fifty would help. Finally finished assessing the damage, Shikamaru turned to the nurse who had exclaimed her congratulations. His eyes widened as he realized what exactly she'd said.
"A-A girl...?" The Nara looked to his lover, who seemed more than drained, before he slowly made his way around her bed to the nurse who was holding a small, wet, and bloody body, high pitched cries sounding from its little mouth. In all honestly, the baby looked like a shrivelled up version of a human, but nonetheless it was his baby; it was his shrivelled up human and as soon as he noted the milky skin she'd definitely inherited from her mother with just a hint of his slight tan, he could feel his heart's capacity double in order to accomodate the amount of love he felt for the small human.
"Mr. Nara," another nurse addressed him. He tore his eyes away from her scrunched up face to look at the nurse. She held some medical version of scissors that shined with cleanliness under the lights, obviously sterilized for this moment. "It's time to cut the umbilical cord." Shikamaru gulped. Right, another task. He stretched out his fingers, regaining feeling in his hand, before he reached for the pair of scissors.
The nurse pointed to where he had to cut, and with little hesitation, he made the snip, thinking that it felt like he was cutting through foam. The nurse thanked him and took the scissors back along with his daughter, bringing her to nearby sink as other nurses gathered around Temari's legs to clean her up.
Walking back to his woman, Shikamaru pulled the chair back to her side before running his hand through her hair. It was matted down against her skin due to the sweat and strain she'd exerted, but he didn't mind. "You alright?" he asked softly, practically cooing. "She's beautiful, by the way," he said, smiling to himself. "But she was crying and her eyes were closed, and she's too young to know who she looks like but... Her skin looks like yours and little like mine and... Well, you have nice skin so..." Shikamaru laughed a little at his rambling. "You did good, Temari."
Birth is Troublesome
Temari couldn’t care less about what was going on around her, voicing her.. colourful vocabulary and trying to get this damned baby out were top priority at the moment. Ears catching small slithers of conversations between short breaks where she had to remind herself how to actually breath.
Nothing ever would make Temari want to cry, or at least bring her to the edge of it. Eyes squeezed shut and eyes watering as she pushed, yelling out every swear and curse under the moon until she was out of breath, panting heavily in attempts to gain her breath. Still muttering that never ending stream of curses between breaths.
Taking a moment to glance at Shikamaru as his hand rested on her cheek, leaning into his touch a small moment of comfort before it started all over again.
“You’re almost there, just one more big one and you’re there.”
She didn’t need much more encouragement then that, already feeling exhausted with the pain and the amount of energy that just seemed to be draining from her body in a constant stream.. or rather water fall. Either way, she was nearly tired out.
Another loud cry and word vomit of swears as she gave a final push with what ever energy she still possessed. Tears finally welling over from the strain, holding Shikamaru’s hand tighter than ever. Come on, just get the fuck out already!
Falling back completely on the bed as she felt some sort of relief, gasping haphazardly as her entire body seemed to relax. Eyes closed as she lay there, hearing.. a cry and some exclamation of gender.. Did they say a girl..?
Too tired to think, move or.. do anything as she just lay there, her grip on Shikamaru’s hand loosening significantly  no longer having the strength left on her to keep a hold of him while she tired to recover.
