Comic book adaptations of movies were generally pretty dull, but as a kid I pored over the Goodwin/Simonson/Janson adaptation of Close Encounters. It had a magic of its own that sprang entirely from their use of the medium. I studied it intensely and learned a lot about how comics can work.

Well here’s some news! Dark Horse's official description for my new graphic novel, BACKFLASH.

Presented by acclaimed and award-winning creators, writer Mat Johnson (Incognegro, Pym) and artist Steve Lieber (Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen, Whiteout), Backflash tells the story of Devin, whose life is spiraling out of control, until he discovers the impossible: by touching an article of family memorabilia, he can travel back in time, mentally reliving the best moments of his past while escaping his problems of the present. But the more Devin "backflashes" he finds himself on a trail of family mystery and betrayal. On this hunt for a truth that was never supposed to come to light, Devin must come to terms with his past if he wants any chance at a future.

Backflash is 104 pages long and is priced at $22.99. The book will be released in bookstores on November 12 and comic shops on November 13.

The passing of absolute legend Trina Robbins just hit me in the chest like a punch when I learned it this morning.

She was such a force, an exceptional human being, witty, quick-witted, brilliant and talented, always crusading for women’s rights in and out of the industry.

I met her and worked with her only a few times, but each time she was an absolute delight and her exceptionality just poured from her. We will miss you a lot Trina.

All my condolences to her family and friends.

How Roy Crane rendered water in his comic strip Buz Sawyer. These were drawn on duo-shade board- a paper with invisible light grey and dark grey patterns that can be revealed by brushing on chemical developers.

First Friday Office Hours for April

PORTLAND: First Friday Office Hours are back! This Friday, April 5th, I'll be at @bookswithpictures from 4-6PM, giving professional feedback on your comics art.

You show me 6-8 pages of comics storytelling. I'll give you feedback based on my 30 years in comics. What works, what doesn't, how to tweak a panel for clarity or impact, tips for saving labor- the sort of advice your teacher at a comics class might offer.

I'm not there to hire you, or read your pitch, or introduce you to a publisher. I'm there to look at the pages you've drawn. I restrict this to comics pages- storytelling- because that's what I know. Scripts, stand-alone illustrations, graphic design, posters? Not what I do.

It's fine if you work digitally, but BRING PRINTOUTS if you can. It's a lot easier to critique work if it's on paper than if it's on a screen. I can scribble notes right on your page or on tracing paper. Plus we won't have to deal with app glitches, or battery problems, or tiny phone screens.

We do this the first Friday of every month, 4-6PM. In-person, not online. Also? It's 100% free. No charge. Just bring your portfolio and your love of comic book storytelling! See you this Friday at Books With Pictures, 1401 SE Division.
