66 Batman - Egg Head
A random drabble?? I forgot I wrote this.
He came back to the living with the sense of being carried. His vision swirled as he clenched his eyes shut to close out the vertigo. “Throw the brat there and tie his hands that way he won’t be a bother.”
That voice sounded familiar but why? Where was he? His head was so fogged he couldn’t tell what was going on. Who ever was carrying him dropped him hard onto the ground and he couldn’t help but let out a groan of pain and rolled onto his back. Then someone grabbed his hands and put them together before tying them up with twine.
The person hovering over him moved and the bright light of the room reached through his eyelids and he rolled over on his side then slowly opened his eyes.
He heard rustling over him and then a voice he did recognize. “Dick, lad, are you alright? They hit you pretty hard.”
“Don’t worry,” The other voice said with an evil sound to it. “We didn’t cause him much harm.”
His surroundings were all a sickening yellow that made his vertigo worse. He felt his stomach churn as he looked around the room. It was then he noticed he wasn’t dressed as Robin. So it was safe to say that the second voice he’d heard must have been, “Bruce? What happened?”
“We were pulled into a dastardly plot to stop the process of paying our debts to the Chief.” Bruce’s voice was calm, he almost sounded annoyed, as he explained their present situation. “Egg Head took us hostage and gassed us inside the Limo.”
All he could do was nod as he sat himself up noting that the other two millionaires were there. He had to watch what he said, in this situation he was Dick Grayson, Bruce Wayne’s ward, not Robin the Boy Wonder, crime fighter.

Robin Hurt Foot Part 2
The writing gods have blessed me tonight!! Better part 2 with actual editing..
 *~*
“Dick Grayson!! Why are you limping like that?!” Aunt Harriet runs over to her nephew reaching out. “A-And a pair of crutches?!”
“It was just an accident Aunt Harriet, I’ll be ok. Just need to stay off it for a few days.”
“What in heaven’s name happened?” She looked like she was going to faint.
“Bruce and I were out hunting-“ Dick started trying to come up with a plausible explanation.
“One of the spare blanks went off and got him in the foot.” Bruce finished walking up to steady his ward as he rocked unsteadily.
“He was shot?”
“With a blank! It’s not that big of a deal and-“ He regretted saying that at her look of anger and worry. “I-I mean-“
“He has strict orders to keep the foot propped up and to stay off it for three days.” Bruce reassured the older lady. “Come now, deep breaths. I can’t have two of you going down on me. I took him to the hospital as soon as it happened.”
“I told you both that I don’t like the idea of you hunting and now this..” She shakes her head taking a deep breath. She held the door open that led to the living room so her nephew could limp in.
“Holy one foot… this is harder than it looks.” Dick grumbled as he was forced to let Bruce help him limp to the couch. He winced as his foot hit his mentor’s leg with one lop sided hop.
“Easy, chum. I’ve got you. We’re almost there.” Bruce looked over his ward’s head to see Alfred. Their eyes met, Dick needed another one of the BatCillen Lozenges.
Carefully he helped the teen sit down then lay back. Dick’s aunt hovered nervously handing pillows over so they could make something for him to prop it up with.
“Aunt Harriet, why don’t you go make Dick some Milk and Cookies. I’m sure it would help him feel better.”
“Cookies!? At a time like this?” She asked almost insulted.
Dick winced as he leaned back getting comfortable as he could, “…maybe some tea and cookies?”
“Oh alright…” She hurried off leaving them behind.
“Here, suck on this.” He pushed the lozenge into the teen’s mouth. “It’s another one of the medicated bat lozenges. It was time for another one.”
“I kind of figured when it hurt earlier…they taste awful.”
“Better than being stuck in the hospital, chum.”
“As always you’re right… but what about Shame?”
Bruce stood to his full height checking on the offended injured foot. He gently felt around it, “I’m keeping an eye on him… I doubt he will make himself known. After all, he injured Robin. Of all the people out there, he would not want Batman to see him… possible revenge and all that.”
“But Bruce, you don’t believe in revenge.”
He gave a half smile half smirk looking down at his ward, “That depends on what sort of revenge one is speaking about.”
Dick couldn’t tell if his mentor was joking or not. He wasn’t able to focus on it too much when a hand squeezed his foot a little too hard, he cried out in pain.
He should know better than to bring it up. Bruce was always a bit over protective when he got hurt on patrol, this time was no different.
“You always said revenge doesn’t do anything… once you get revenge on one person, it just continues to grow and you can’t stop it…”
“Shame doesn’t know this and it will keep him in hiding. I just need you to sit, relax and heal so you can join me in taking him down.” The other reassured. He pulled the ahgan off the back of the couch and tucked the teen in with it before sitting down on the ground pulling out one of the books Dick had been reading. He starts to read it out loud hoping it would help keep his Ward’s spirits high.

Requested RIP - Robin hurt foot part 1
I'm so tired from work but damn it I wanna write. There is absolutely NO EDITING in this thing... XD so yeah. BUT its still RIP. I want to write the second part tomorrow.
Alfred steps out of the elevator expecting to hear more of the plan to catch Shame. He didn’t expect to find one of them injured, muchless shot.
“Alfred, we need blankets and a temporary bed for him rest on. The batcillen losanges and the normal first aid kit.”
“Right away, sir.” He didn’t have time to check on the young crime fighter in the passenger seat. He knew time was of the essence.
“B-Batman, really I’m ok.. Shame a-and the three hundred horses he’s stealing…” He stopped himself confused, that didn’t sound right. “I-I mean… “
“You’re delirious, Robin. Just rest long enough to get the medication inside you.” The other explained trying to remain calm. It would do no good to cause the young teen to panic.
Carefully, he opened the passenger door and knelt down trying to see how bad it was. The green pixiboot had taken most of the damage from the bullet. He gently removed it and saw his ward’s foot was already swelling from the injury.
He looked up and saw Robin was starting to doze off, his head slipping down his shoulder. “Alfred? Is it ready?”
“Yes, back here.” Alfred showed back up hurrying over. “Where was he shot?”
“In the heel.” Was the curt worried response.
“The nerve of Shame to shoot at you… that’s just…low even for them.” Alfred commented as he watched Batman lift the teenager out of the car. He saw the injury before leading them back to the makeshift bed. “I already brought out all I could. I wasn’t sure how bad it was.”
“It seems the almost bullet proof lining I designed for our boots came in handy. It didn’t go straight through and I was able to remove it before we got here.” Batman explained getting a moan of pain from the one he was carrying. “Easy chum, I’m going to lay you down. Alfred, steady his right leg. We need to prop it up.”
Robin tried to stay awake and not give into the pained sleep that was calling his name. The shock was starting to hit and it was taking over his other thoughts.
“It’s safe to sleep, go on and rest.” The other tried to reassure. He held the teens hand tight watching as Alfred kept the injured foot in the air before resting it on a few pillows.
He glanced down and saw how scared Robin was. “It’s the shock, Robin. This is why I wanted to come back. Once you work the fever off, I’ll give you one of the bat cillen losanges.” He brought the blanket up to his partner’s chin tucking him in. “I’ll be right here.”

Ma Parker
I started thinking... if Robin somehow got out with a cold and a fever and Batman didn't notice.. she'd let him have it. After all, she's a mom at heart, right?
He found himself coming to at something sharp being pushed into his arm. He tried to sit up but as soon as he did he fell backwards into whatever he was laying on. He felt light headed and weak. “B-Batman?”
In his field of vision appeared an older lady, “Ah no, Boy Wonder, sorry, you are with us.”
He blinked and tried to sit up again, “Ma Parker!”
The lady laughed again but then her expressions turned into concern, “That is right, my boy, but you see you took quite the spill. I was serious when I was worried about your health and here I am correct.”
“Ma, here are the compresses you asked us to get.” Leg’s responded handing the clothes and the bowl of water to her mother. She smiled at Robin, “You sure are lucky Ma found you…you would have frozen outside..”
“B-But I-I’m …I-I …” Robin stammered confused. He leaned forward feeling dizzier than before and held his face in his gloved hands. “Where’s Batman?”
“It’s funny you should mention him, I was about to call Gordon myself, after all you poor poor boy, being forced to run around, its not good for you…here now you just lie back and rest and I will get a hold of Batman for you.”
Robin lie back still confused but felt too sick to care. He just wanted out of here and wanted his mentor. He jumped slightly as he felt one of the compresses be placed on his forehead. He looked around the room feeling the world start turning too quickly making him dizzy. He started to drift off to sleep.
*~*
“Where is he Ma Parker? If you harmed a hair on his head -!” Batman threatened as he burst through the door.
“Now Batman, I maybe a crook but I’m a mother at heart. I saved his life.” She argued leading him in, “Right this way. He’s not doing so well, his fever has risen in the past hour or so.”
The Caped Crusador followed her, his heart pounding. What had they done to Robin? He hadn’t been able to reach the boy at all on his communicator and had been actually relieved to get the phone call from Ma Parker about his wear abouts. “Fever?”
“Yes, Batman, I think he’s got a bout of the flu, the poor boy.” She opened a door one of the bedrooms and walked in. “Robin, you’ve got a visitor..”
Robin was lying on the bed surrounded by pillows and covered up by a few quilts. His face was pale, eyes closed, hair matted. He did look quite ill. “R-Robin?! C-Chum!?” Batman called walking closer and sitting on the chair by the bed. “Great scot, what happened?”
“He’s just a boy, Batman. All of that running around isn’t good for his age. Maybe it finally caught up with him?” She pondered aloud watching Batman stew it all over. “He’ll be alright, Batman.”
Batman only reached forward and placed a gloved hand on Robin’s forehead, “Chum? Can you hear me?”
Robin’s eyes opened slowly but remained heavily lidded, “B-Batman?” His voice was hoarse and tired.
“Easy, lad, I’m here. Ma Parker says you’ve fallen ill.” Batman tried to smile to reassure the young teen that everything was alright but he couldn’t completely do it. He hadn’t seen Robin this ill before and it scared him.
“Before you ask, Batman, you can take him home, the poor boy, I will let you escape without chasing after you.”
“That’s surprisingly kind of you.” Batman said dryly but stood up and gathered the small feverish body into his arms. He held Robin close as the Boy Wonder shivered from his fever and with the blankets no longer there to keep him warm.
Unseen by either of them, Ma Parker just smirked. Her plan was going better than ever. “Here take one of the quilts. It’s hand made and will keep him warm.” She offered.
Batman shook his head and pulled out a bat blanket from his utility belt wrapping it around Robin’s shaking frame, “No offense Ma Parker but I’ve got a blanket.”
She forced herself to smile kindly as she nodded, “As long as he’s warm.”
The Caped Crusader then walked past her, careful to not jolt Robin to much and made his way to the Batmobile. Something just wasn’t right with howfast  Robin had fallen to this illness, it was almost as if he had been poisoned somehow…Robin moaned in his arms causing him to jolt back to the task at hand he quickened his pace getting Robin to the Batmobile and laying him down in the passenger seat. “Just rest, I’ll get you back to the batcave, I promise.”

Older RIP with Joker..?
Gosh, i think I wrote this like years ago... not so old that you can tell I was super young. BUT I reread it and I liked it lol.
There was a faint odor in the air, it didn’t smell right. Batman wondered why his eyes were closed? He opened them with the intent of finding out what was going on. When he did all he saw was a wall. A very ugly wall at that. Where was he?
He attempted to sit up and found his arms tied behind his back. After a few moments of wriggling around he discovered the knots were poorly tied. In seconds he had them off and able to move freely again.
Beside him he heard a moan. It sounded like Robin. Batman twisted to see what or who was beside him and found his partner. The boy was lying on his back arms by his side, Robin’s eyes were still closed.
Doing his best to stay calm if not for his own mental state for Robin’s, Batman took a deep breath and leaned closer to the boy’s side. He placed a hand on the boy’s chest relieved to feel a steady heart beat. It just meant that Robin was coming to. “Robin, wake up, Robin.”
The first movement was in Robin’s arms. They were attempting to reach up and find who ever was shaking him. Batman took one of the green gloved hands into his own and squeezed gently. “That’s it. Wake up, chum.” The tone of the Caped Crusader’s voice was at a well trained level that showed Robin he was safe and kept the boy calm.
Knowing he still had to choose his words carefully though, just like when Robin had been really young. Different words had different meanings to the young teen. Saying the wrong phrase would cause unneeded panic.
In what seemed like an hour Robin’s eyes fluttered open. Batman’s concern had grown at the slowness of Robin’s coming to. “Are you alright, Robin?”
“T..Think so, Batman.” Robin curled to his side in a protective pose towards Batman and just laid there quietly. “Just…”
“Yes?” Batman put a hand on Robin’s shoulder.
“I don’t know what it is….something doesn’t feel right.” Robin looked up at his mentor with faded blue eyes seeking answers to their predicament.
Batman had no explanation and instead of verbally answering, he made an attempt to find out what was going on. “I’m sure that once the gas clears out of your head you will be fine maybe weak, but fine.”
The answer seemed to satisfy the Boy Wonder and he proceeded to wrap his arms around himself and close his eyes again. After he made sure Robin wasn’t in any pain, Batman stood up carefully not knowing if either one of them was injured in anyway way and went to the walls. He pressed against them, “Steele.”
“Holy Armored Truck,” Robin whispered watching his mentor walk around. “How are we going to get out of here?”
“You’re not.” A loud cackle was heard from a hidden speaker. “That’s the point.”
“Joker…” Robin replied. He sat up slowly and looked around. “Up there Batman- that speaker.”
“I see it, chum.” Batman unconsciously moved back to where the Boy Wonder was making sure he was protected if the need arose. “Joker, what do you want with us?”
“What does any Villain want, Batdope? Your lives. I’m so tired of the headaches you give me. Besides life would be so much more enjoyable without you two party poopers trailing me around everywhere.”
“Let the boy go.”
“Now Batman, it isn’t fitting to make a man die on his own. So I gave you Robin. You really need more acquaintances, it was hard finding someone who would die with you.”
“Isn’t there any kind of deal that we can make?”
Robin struggled to his feet, “No Batman!! I won’t let you-“ He fell into Batman surprised at his own weakness. “Holy--!”
“Joker what have you done to us?” Batman snarled. The usual boiling point was being met. Robin was injured or sick and he knew Joker was the culprit. Joker hurting him was different. Robin wasn’t but a boy.
“Hold your temper or I’ll gas you again.”
“What. Have. You. Done. To. Robin?” Batman asked again locking his arms under Robin’s arm pits to help the boy’s balance. But Robin’s legs buckled each time Batman tried. His worry was escalating.
“You will see, Batman.” Batman could almost hear the Joker smiling. “If I were you, I’d save your energy. Dinner will be served in 1 hour.”
“I am not eating any of your food.”
“Then die of starvation. If you want to have a chance of survival you will eat the food. It’s untainted and will give you both strength.”
Batman slowly helped Robin sit down and he kneeled down on one knee keeping Robin up right. “What’s the catch?”
“There is no catch. I just want to watch you die slowly, rapid is so gruesome. Slower is a treat.” Then the intercom went off.
“Batman, I’m sorry. I don’t know what’s wrong.” Robin replied with embarrassment. “I just stood up and fell.”
“Can you feel your legs?” Batman asked trying his best to sound calm. He put a hand on one of the small legs looking up at his partner. Robin gave Batman an absurd look but nodded his response. A relief washed over Batman and he let a weak smile play across his features. “Well that’s not to bad then.”

1966 More Serious Season 3 Whump
That episode where Cat Woman and Joker team up? Annnd the light house explodes? What if it wasn't all so pretty?
Batman warned Robin not to turn around but he didn't listen.
It all happened so fast, his eyes caught the sight of the match hitting the gun powder, he knew they only had seconds to get out if that. He just did what his instincts told him to. He knew his cape was blast resistant but theirs weren’t. The least of his worries were the villains, his main concern was getting Batgirl and Robin out of there or at least out of harms way.
“Batgirl, Robin, RUN.”
They didn’t need to be told twice, Batgirl screamed and covered her ears running as fast as she could to the door just hoping the others were behind her. This wasn’t the part of crime fighting she’d signed up for.
Batman saw that Batgirl was out of the way and Robin wasn’t moving fast enough. He leapt forward knocking Robin to the ground and covering him up with his cape then hid himself as best he could shielding the Boy Wonder with his body. It was dead silent aside from the bickering of the villains then a large explosion rattled the house. He just hid his head and kept his focus on his partner. He heard windows crashing down and glass shattering, a cloud of dust moved through what was left of the room.
Then the room went quiet again. He sat up his back to the rest of the house, his main concern was the teenager. “Are you ok, Robin?”
He wanted to make sure that Robin wasn’t going to see any of the carnage left over if Cat Woman and the Joker hadn’t gotten away in time. The boy was just sixteen and didn’t need see anymore death than was necessary, especially not in this gruesome sense. The Boy Wonder was helped to his knees noticing that Batman wasn’t allowing him to look anywhere else. “Man, that was close.” He let Batman lift his face to check for any wounds, there were a few deep cuts on his cheeks that were oozing blood but nothing too bad it seemed.
“Batman! Robin! Are you two alright?”
“Batgirl don’t come in here. We’re fine.” Then he sighed, he was just going to have to turn around. “Robin, this is an order, turn around and face Batgirl.”
“But Batman, why?”
“Don't ask questions, lad, just do it.” Batman forcibly helped the teenager turn around then stood up and turned towards what was once the closet full of gun powder. There was no sign of Cat Woman or the Joker but he made a face realizing at least one of their goons had gotten caught in the blast. The site wasn’t pretty at all and he sighed shaking his head trying to quell his own emotions about the mess. He was thankful Robin wasn’t looking.
“…Batman…” He heard Robin choke on his next words and looked over seeing that he’d looked anyway.
“Robin, I told you not to look. You didn’t need to see that.”
Robin only shivered, his eyes were wide and he looked as if he were fighting tears. His blue eyes seemed to take in the scene, all the blood and gore everywhere, his knees shook and he put his hands to his mouth feeling like he was going to be sick.
“Batman what is it?” Batgirl asked innocently still turned not facing Batman. She was worried about Robin though. She could see out of the corner of her eye his whole body was shaking. “R-Robin? You alright?”
“Batgirl, go find Cat Woman and Joker and make sure the care keeper are alright.” Was Batman’s calm response.
“A-Alright.” Batgirl ran off obediently.
Batman sighed watching her leave then eased Robin away from the gruesome sight and let him fall to his knees and throw up.

Night Terrors
Ya know it's canon Dick had nightmares after his parents were killed. So let's make it work in the 66 TV series
It was 3am when a piercing scream was heard throughout the halls of Wayne Manor. The lights on the second floor came on in the hallway as Alfred silently made his way up from his bedroom on the first floor wrapping his robe around his tall frame. He met Mrs Cooper out in the hallway.
In the master bed room, arms reached out and pulled the young teen into a warm embrace as he cried out thrashing in his sleep. "Easy, chum, easy. It's ok. It's over. It's over." Came the calm response, Bruce was the only one strong enough to hold Dick in place, anyone else would have received a black eye at the very least.
The door to the hallway opened, Alfred out of habit had a candlerabra lit, he sat it up on the old oak chest by the door. "Ah, Master Dick again?"
Aunt Harriet hurried in behind Alfred running to the bathroom. She returns a few minutes later with two wet washclothes. She sits on the edge of the bed and eases one down her nephew's shirt trying to quell any fever that may arouse from this. The other she handed to Bruce.
Bruce took it and sat up gently holding Dick tight in his arms wiping his ward's face down as he shook in his sleep clinging to whomever had him. Tears started to stream and he was left panting, groggy, eyes still not focused as he began to come out of the dream. "Dick? Can you hear us..? Take it slow, you are safe."
The young teen slowly pulled away from Bruce looking around as his vision started to focus. "…Bruce…? W-What happened?" His eyes followed Alfred as he walked in from the bathroom with a glass of water setting it down on the nightstand, and that dreaded white pill sat beside it. "….o-oh..I woke up…s-screaming again didn't I…?"
Aunt Harriet sat quietly on the bed beside him still washing him down with the cloth, trying to keep his tempreature down. The doctor warned of the night terrors causing a fever because he got too worked up over them. "How is his pulse..?" She asked quietly watching worried.
Bruce reached out and gently pressed two fingers to the feverish sweaty neck. "It's quick." He reached behind him and picked up the pill and the glass of water. "You know the rules, chum."
Dick was still too groggy to protest, as his mentor pushed the pill to his lips. He made a face but took the offered water and swallowed it down.
"I hate doing that when Master Grayson isn't coherent…" Alfred sighed taking the glass. "But I understand why."
"There is no need for an anxiety attack on top of a night terror. Remember what happened last time?" Aunt Harriet said standing up. "He was a mess for nearly a week and had to be hospitalized. If this helps prevent that. I don't see why not."

Unknown RIP
I'm not sure where I was going with this but it's not bad. XD
ruce Wayne glanced at his phone as it started to ring during the board meeting. He apologized and picked it up, the line that was blinking was solely reserved for Dick if he was in trouble. "This is Bruce Wayne."
His eyes widened as he stood up, "I'll be there in 30 minutes." He hung up and looked to the shocked people sitting around him, "Gentlemen, we will have to continue this meeting at a later date. I apologize but I have some personal business to attend too."
Walking out of the office he didn't bother to even call Alfred, instead he hurried to the elevator and down to the underground parking lot where he had parked his cadallac earlier.  Bruce climbed in and drove off his mind racing, the person on the phone was the school nurse. Dick had collapsed during gym and was unconscious  as of the phone call.
*~*
30 minutes later he pulls into Roosevelt High and all but runs inside. The receptionist stops him until she sees who he is then directs him down the hallway to the nurses office.
"Bruce Wayne? I'm Nurse Mindy, how are you?" She tried to ask politely though she could see he looked worried as he should be.  "Your ward is right over here. He's been going in and out of consciousness." She motioned walking the milionare to one of the beds.
Bruce's eyes widened as he hurried over, "D-Dick?"
Slowly the young teen opened his eyes, they remained heavily lidded, "..B-Bruce…?"
"Easy, Chum, I'm here." Bruce responded reaching forward to feel his wards forehead. "No fever.."
"No, that’s the strange thing, he's fine so far physically."
"What do you sugguest?" Bruce asked holding his wards hand. Dick was still mostly incoherent.
"Take him home, let him rest."
Bruce nodded and stood up gently gathering Dick into his arms, the boy weighed nothing. "I apologize for the inconvience."
"Don't. Just take him home and let him rest."
*~*
Robin listened to Batman talk with Comminsor Gorden and Chief O'Hara, he felt dizzy and sluggish as he watched them move about in the office. He stood back not saying a word, determined to stay up right.
"What do you think, Robin?" Batman asked noticing how quiet the Boy Wonder had been since they had gotten up here. His mind kept going back to a few weeks ago when his ward collapsed during school with no warning.
"W-What do I think Batman?" To be honest Robin hadn't been listening. "Sorry Batman -" He stumbled a bit blinking as the world started to spin.
Comminsor Gorden stood up at his desk as if ready to run catch the Boy Wonder. "Robin? Are you alright? You've been acting strange since you've arrived."
The teen blushed at the attention but couldn't regain himself. "Begora, he is pale."
Batman stepped forward just in time to catch his partner as the boys knees buckled, his eyes rolling back into his head. "ROBIN!"  He knelt down holding the small body in his arms, this time he felt a fever raging. "Chum? Robin? …he's got a fever. I need a doctor, immediately!"
Robin didn't budge in Batman's arms as he was carried over to the couch by the window. He heard a lot of commotion but couldn't get his body to respond. He felt Batman lay him down on the leather couch and something lay down on top of him, through his heavily lidded eyes he thought he saw Batman's cape on him. He tried again to respond only able to manage a moan this time.
"Do you think it was the Riddler that did this Batman?" Gorden asked once they were alone after Ohara had run to get a medic. He watched silently waiting for an answer, he noticed the Caped Crusador's body was tense, his face fixed on Robin, his features drowned in worry.
Batman hadn't let go of Robin's hand once since laying the teen on the couch. "I don't know… I hope not." Though deep down he was hoping it was because then he'd have an answer as to what was going on.
*~*
"Chum, we're here." Bruce's voice echoed in his ears, Dick slowly opened his eyes uncurling from the front passenger seat. He looks around groggily, the quilt that had been draped over him six hours ago fell down to his lap. He looks out the window at the old victorian house.
"…s-sorry, did I sleep the entire time?" Dick asked rubbing sleep out of his eyes.
Bruce only squeezed his shoulder gently, "Just relax. You haven't been feeling well as of late. Its why the doctor sugguested I take you somewhere out of the city. Do you remember?"
His young ward blinked as he tried to remember, memories started to come back of him collapsing at school, collapsing during patrol, he had even fainted at Comminsor Gorden's office. The doctor had told Bruce to get him out of the city and into fresh air… he remembered being carried to the car and told to just relax, he had fallen asleep too weak to keep his eyes open for long.

60s Night Owl Oneshot: Sink or Swim
Pain throbbed through Night Owl’s head as she slowly blinked herself out of unconsciousness, groaning quietly and trying to piece together what was happening. The last thing she remembered was a feather-tailed dart pricking her arm and Robin calling out her name before everything faded to black as she fell from her horse’s saddle.
She tried to raise her hands to rub her aching head, but found them tied tightly behind her; not entirely surprising, given the circumstances. As her vision focused, she saw that her ankles were tied together too, and she soon realized there was also a gag around her mouth. Penguin clearly hadn’t spared any precautions this time. Speaking of the feathered fink, she heard a crackle from the speakers above her head before his voice came booming through.
“Well, well, well, it seems our little owlet has finally woken up! Say, how’s that head of yours feeling? Took a pretty nasty fall there, hwah hwah hwah!”
Night Owl’s eyes narrowed in a glare, wishing she could get the gag off to tell that crooked bird just what she thought of him.
“Say, I think a little ice will help with that pain, wouldn’t you agree?”
Suspicion filled her mind; he would never be so generous as to help her, so he must have some tricky scheme up his sleeve.
“Yes, I think some ice is just what you need! Here, allow me to help with that!”
The sound of machinery whirring filled the room, Night Owl’s senses going on high alert as she looked around for what could possibly be happening. She didn’t have to wait long for an answer, as the metal floor began to slowly split open in a radial pattern, dipping downwards to reveal a pool of icy water taking up the entire bottom of the room. The young crimefighter began to panic, pushing herself back against the wall in a futile attempt to keep herself from falling in. Her boots slipped and skidded against the smooth steel, her breathing quickening as she tried to think of some way to get out of this mess.
‘Batman!’ she thought desperately, ‘Robin! G.W.! Where are you???’
She twisted her wrists and ankles, hoping she could somehow tear through the thick ropes that held them in place.
‘If I could just get to my utility belt, or even just stand up-!’
But the ropes remained tight and unyielding, and the panels of the floor kept folding down even lower, until Night Owl couldn’t fight the force of gravity any longer. With a muffled yelp, she slid down the perilous slope, tumbling over the edge into the deep, icy water. She just barely managed to take one last desperate breath before her body began to sink below the surface, shutting her eyes as terror squeezed her heart so tight she thought it would burst. Her mind was a flurry of fear and desperation too dense to properly think through, struggling even harder against the ropes that bound her as she shivered in the freezing water.
‘Dad’s on his way, he’s gotta be on his way! He’ll be here any second, just gotta hold on a little longer!’
She tried to hold out hope, but as the seconds ticked by, her movements grew weaker and her head became clouded and fuzzy. Finally, after about two minutes of trying to break free, she passed out, her body reflexively trying to take in air as she sunk to the pool’s floor.
~ Meanwhile ~
Batman grabbed Penguin by the front of his suitcoat, working hard to restrain the anger and fear in his voice.
“We’ve got you cornered, you foul fiend! Now tell us what you’ve done with Night Owl!”
“I’ve done nothing whatsoever with her, my agitated adversary!” Penguin replied with infuriating composure, “Merely gotten her some ice for that fall of hers!”
“Yeah, right, Penguin!” Robin snapped, punching his fist into his palm, “Like you’d ever do anything to help one of us!”
While the other two interrogated the Penguin, G.W.’s eyes swept the room looking for clues. They landed on a video monitor behind the arch-criminal, widening in shock and horror.
“Guys, look!”
Batman and Robin turned to see what she was pointing at, only to gasp at what they saw: Night Owl bound and gagged, struggling for freedom in a pool of water. Batman’s eyes flashed with fear, his heart stopping for a moment as he cried,
“Night Owl!”
Penguin laughed, saying with a smug grin,
“See? Perfectly chilled in my own little slice of the Arctic Sea!”
Robin’s face was flushed with rage, looking seconds away from strangling Penguin as his gloved hands clenched into tight fists.
“You murderous monster!”
Batman took a deep breath, steadying his mind as he forced himself to focus on what to do next.
“There’s no time to lose. You two, go rescue Night Owl, while I hand this tricky bird over to the authorities and call for an ambulance.”
The twins nodded and dashed out into the hallway, opening each and every door they came across in search of the room that held their endangered teammate. At last, they threw open a door and were met with a cold blast of air, taking a step back from the sudden drop in front of them. Robin didn’t waste a second before diving into the pool, his heart racing as he saw Night Owl lying motionless at the bottom of the pool.
‘Please don’t be too late, please don’t be too late-!’
As soon as he reached her, he grabbed her tight, hoisting her back to the surface as he held her close. When they both broke through the water, G.W. tossed down the Batrope and helped pull them back out onto dry land. Robin set Night Owl on the ground, listening for a heartbeat with bated breath as his hands clutched her shoulders.
“She’s still alive.” he confirmed with a shaky sigh, “But we’ve gotta hurry.”
G.W. nodded, beginning to cut the ropes around Night Owl’s wrists and ankles as her brother ripped off the gag around her mouth. He hesitated for a moment, but decided that chivalry would have to wait as he placed his hands on her chest and began with the compressions. After around thirty, he tilted her head back, pressed his lips to hers, and breathed deep, though it was hard when he was already so out of breath with worry. He then went back to compressions as his sister held the other girl’s hand in a death-grip.
It took another few rounds of breathing and compression, but Night Owl finally stirred, then shuddered, then coughed up a mouthful of water before taking a ragged, gasping breath.
“Oh… my gosh…”
Robin and G.W.’s faces lit up, the both of them squeezing her in a tight hug and knocking the little bit of air she’d regained out of her lungs.
“Oof-! H-heh, hey, guys…”
“We were so worried about you!” G.W. exclaimed, pulling her closer.
“Are you alright??” Robin asked protectively.
“Well, I nearly drowned to death, so I’m thinking I’ve been better!”
The other two rolled their eyes with a snort as Batman rushed down the hall, several doctors right behind him.
“Night Owl!”
Her father knelt by her side, cupping her face in his hands as relief flooded his whole expression.
“Thank heavens they reached you in time! Any other injuries?”
“Just the side of my head from when I fell off of Omen.” she replied, gingerly touching the sore spot.
“Just take it easy while we get you to the hospital. You still have a lot of water in your lungs that we need to deal with.”
Night Owl nodded, trying to stand up but stumbling back dizzily. Robin caught her and steadied her against his side, G.W. going to support her from the other side as they helped her out of the Penguin’s hideout and down to the waiting ambulance.
