[ID: a post to r/not-interesting by Sarcastic-Prick. The title reads, “I can imagine anything” and the photo underneath it has been edited to be a panel of Batman. He's shown from the shoulders up and is looking at the viewer as he points to his forehead. END ID]
[ID: first photo is the original Reddit post where instead of Batman, it's a man pointing to his forehead while a red light is glowing on his face. The second photo is the original panel of Batman. END ID]

I complain about the status quo in comics and how because of the one set by editorial hardly any story could deviate from that and thus it gives off a sense of futility (from a doylist sense).
but it’s also very fascinating to me in a watsonian sense when there is a story about bruce and dick it WILL start with one of them in mortal peril and it will end with one of them saving the other in a way that also highlights the gulf of unspoken things between them—you will never understand each other because you think your father doesn’t need you anymore/your son should have his own life and leave you behind to your mission that you will surely die from.
when it’s a story about bruce and cass it will always be a story about mirrors, about bruce seeing cass as an idealized version of himself where she seemingly possessed an inherent sense of morality and self-sacrificial goodness (<- untrue, but he does not know and would never know), and about cass seeing bruce as the end goal of her mission, where to prove you love something you always have to carry the dead thing on your back, even if it weighs you down and suffocates you, change and redemption is available for everyone except for you who is an island (<- she will learn in time that this is not the case, and that is what allows her to stand apart from bruce and emerge from beneath his shadow). their story will be mirrors reflecting back what the other sees as infinitum and no matter if the story is about bruce alive or dead, cass will always be trying to escape the urge to become just like batman, which is an impossible task, and to fill the void left by batman’s absence she could only try to claim the mantle for herself and find her own way.
when there is a story about bruce and jason it will always start with reminiscing about the jason who died so that the jason who is alive can seem unfamiliar (triggering ineffectual melancholia, to bruce)/purposefully monstrous (and thus powerful, to jason). it will always be a story about trying to reject where you came from and asserting the myth of self-reliance and self-control when you want to kill your father, kill yourself, kill anyone who harmed you when you were young so no one could take you away from him. it will always end with a fight, jason will always leave wounded and angry and you know when the next story starts it will always repeat.

"his desire to prove himself got him killed"
that's a weird way to say his mother lied to him, betrayed him and pulled a gun on him, and then watched while smoking a cigarette as he got the shit beat out of him with a crowbar...
