Those last two Adele wins are already discourse fodder. I knew they were going to be controversial. I knew people are going to scream “racism” but here’s the thing, yes, Lemonade was an astounding album. No one can dispute that. Ever. I’ve raved about it since it came out so this is not me trashing it. I love Lemonade, but if there was an album that deserved to win tonight, it was 25. The musical mastery in that entire album, from the first beat to the last, took the edge on Lemonade even if just by a hair.
Lemonade was an unparalleled political statement. Lemonade was an ode to blackness. Lemonade was about pride in your racial identity. Lemonade was Visual Art. Lemonade meant so many things to so many people BUT the Academy is not taking any of that into consideration. The Recording Academy ONLY looks at the music. Giving this award to Adele is not saying “Lemonade is less important” or “the empowerment you got from it is invalid”, it just means 25 was the better album musically speaking. That’s all it is.
TV and Film have endless problems not only when it comes to representing diversity but also with acknowledging/celebrating the diversity it has during award shows. No arguing that, but you can’t transplant the problems of those industries over to music. The Recording Academy is not the same as say the Academy of Motion Pictures because the number of minorities in their member roster is significant and their yearly Grammy nominations and wins always show it. This year the five most nominated artists were POC: Beyonce, Kanye, Rihanna, Chance, and Drake. All black. Throwing around the word “racism” for instances like these only cheapen the meaning of the word and make people take it less seriously in circumstances that really matter.
