cookies and cream

Cookies n cream cupcakes are not a flavor I truly care for,

and yet here I sit in my room with a slice of red velvet cake sitting next to me,

something heavy in my chest and a lump in my throat as I remember my birthday three nights ago...

you brought home cookies n cream cupcakes,

and I briefly wondered if you bought them because that's all there was at the store or because you thought I liked them,

it was not the first time I had to bite my tongue to stop from saying anything and it will not be the last,

I don't care for cookies n cream cupcakes for I am sure you've noticed I much prefer red velvet cake and cheesecake,

or raspberry and lemon flavors than cookies n cream.

And I remember a few days before my birthday that I was excited about what kind of cake flavor you would get me,

only for that wonder to be squashed away and I had to force a smile onto my lips because at least you kept your promise of getting me cupcakes for my birthday.

I can't help but wonder days after it already happened

while I sit in my room with the red velvet cake if I am spoiled or if the reason I feel this way is because of sadness over something truly meaningless,

I can't help but wonder if the ache in my chest is sadness or guilt over the cookies n cream cupcakes that I won't even bother touching again after the first one,

for I do not care for cookies n cream,

I thought you knew this about me but maybe you never noticed...

It’s a beautiful night. Warm and clear and so bright, you barely need the street lights which illuminate the sidewalk and your path ahead.

You hum happily, looking up at the moon, which is still rising in the sky. It’s gorgeous tonight, already round and full and dazzlingly bright. It gives a tranquil, mysterious feeling to the night, making it undeniably romantic. Better yet, the night sky was clear, and you could see more than a few stars in the rapidly deepening blue of the night’s sky. When the moon was at its peak, and the sky was at its darkest, you could only imagine how beautiful it would be.

You almost regret that Kyoutani wasn’t walking with you now. The only thing that would make this night more perfect was his fingers entwined with yours, or his arm around your waist, holding you close to him to keep him warm.

You look up at the moon again, sighing wistfully.

Under such a beautiful moon, you almost believe that this is a night where anything can happen.

“Fear not young maiden! We shall bring you back to your parents and kingdom!” The lead adventure with a narcissistic personality called out to me.

I stared at him blankly, a book in hand, my dragon mother had placed me in her nest. “But she is my mom.” I said blankly and watch the adventurers freeze up.

“W-wha?...” the narcissist had stared at me dumbfounded before my dragon mother had gently push more gold around me and sniffed me a little. I smiled, gently patting her nose.

“I’m fine mother. Just bothersome people.” I sighed out and stood up slowly, grabbing a sword from the pile of treasure. “It’s a pretty nice sword. It’ll look nicer with your blood on it if you persist to kill my mother.” I said darkly and stared the group down, watching them tremble a bit in their boots.

They were sent packing that day, the fear of it all sent stories out. Stories of the young maiden who protects dragons and will kill anyone who comes to harm them.

You are a orphan that is being raised by a large dragon and she’s very protective of you. One day, a party of adventurers finds you.

What are the Do’s and Dont’s when writing an autistic character??? 🤔

huh that’s a good question. as an autistic writer i don’t… really have experience having to ask this, because my pov is autistic by default. let’s see…

read about real autistic experiences, not just autism as written about by allistic people. check the tag ‘actuallyautistic’ to read posts from people actually on the spectrum. keep an eye out for topics that get repeatedly mentioned. (for example, we tend to talk about our sensory issues a lot, and make memes about communication difficulties).

read things by autistic writers! tumblr, please leave suggestions in the notes.

get an autistic beta reader to review your writing, and give input

i would love to see an autistic character infodumping in a way that charms the audience. it’s something many of us are self-conscious about, and are sometimes ostracized for, but I actually find it lovely to hear people on the spectrum sharing their excitement with the world.

i love characters who express things in awkward ways but still manage to make a point. i love characters whose conversationally gawkiness makes them unconventional but still endearing. who are strange and ungainly, but still loved, still delightful. 

unconventional conversation styles! i tend to bounce between overly talkative and withdrawn. sometimes i babble. i also tend to use a lot of metaphors to explain my experiences in a way other people will understand. and I check in a lot, asking “Does that make sense? Do you ever get that too?” If people don’t seem to ‘get it’, I try repeating myself using different metaphors, different wording. you’ll see many autistic people using repetition and other language quirks. 

I think there’s a lot of value in writing an autistic character with the attitude “I know from experience that a lot of people won’t understand me, but I understand myself, and I like myself regardless.” Quiet confidence is hard-won for people like us, and I like seeing it represented. 

you’ll also see many autistic people who are naturally accepting of other people’s quirks. we know what it’s like to be isolated for being different. i find that i’m rarely phased by traits that other people are self-conscious about revealing. interestingly, i’ve had many new acquaintances come out to me (as queer, as neurodiverse) and share insecurities they usually keep hidden. being on the outside means other ‘outsiders’ tend to recognize you as a safe person. even if i can’t communicate the ‘standard’ way, i still have value as a community member, and people will sometimes seek me out in unexpected ways.

sometimes we need quiet time. the world is an overwhelming place. i can’t count the number of times i’ve had to say, unexpectedly “I need to stop, I need to sit down, I can’t talk right now”. a good friendship dynamic might have a character whose supporting of that.

autistic people get frustrated, just like anyone else! i’d love to see a character frustrated at their communication struggles, and a patient allistic friend giving them time, saying It’s ok. I’m still here. People figuring out ways to support each other through trial and error is my jam.

anyone else have advice for allistic writers writing autistic characters? Also, any good recommendations for fics with autistic characters? one that stands out to me is ‘true, and unafraid of toil’, a fantastic beasts fic about an autistic newt scamander.

Kasamatsu Yukio

He was shy. You knew this, which is why you two kept your relationship on the downlow. You’ve been dating him since second year and you two were neighbors so you went over to his place often and same with him. You had a balcony facing his window, plus there was a bit of roof there to get onto so it was easy for you to get to his room and for him to get to yours. Which was where you and him were. In his room. On his bed, snuggling and talking with each other at 6 in the morning. You both woke up early and just decided to talk with each other. You slept over, even if it was a school night. He wanted to be more loving in public, start on pda more. He was sweet. You had gnelty caressed his cheek and gave him a soft smile. “I don’t mind as long as you’re comfortable and want to.” He had nodded at what you said and gently kissed his nose before he sat up and started to get off the bed. You he tugged him back and kissed his cheek before you left his room with a soft bye.

You two walked to school together, so it was obvious you two were gonna talk and hold pinkies with each other. It was his idea, he would end up letting go as soon as the school was nearby but today he had gently slid his hand into yours. That had your heart beating faster and your cheeks flushing a bit. You couldn’t help but smile a bit and look down as you gently gave his hand a squeeze. And like usual as soon as you two were walking into the school yard, Kise comes in and wraps his arm around your shoulder. You don’t enjoy being that close to him. You were about to tell him off again before Kasamatsu had pulled you closer. Kasamatsu had glared at Kise as he ended up holding you by your waist... oh boy that sure as hell got a flushed red face out of you. You had looked down and smiled a bit as you placed your hand on top of his, gently holding onto his hand that was holding your waist. Kise was surprised at that beofre he grinned and gave a thumbs up. “Took you long enough senpai.” Kise said and grinned at him a bit before he went ahead and to the gym. No one was really here yet except for the ones who had morning practice. Morning practice was a bitch, but as the manager you had to attend.

As soon as you two stepped into the gym, ready to go and holding hands, a few of the players had wolf whistled and cheered Kasa... Yukio on. You forgot that you didn’t have to address him by his last name in public anymore. He asked you not to today. So of course you didn’t. It was all baby steps, you had started togently let go of his hand when he brought your hand up to his lips and kissed the back of it beofre he let go and quickly went onto the court and started to yell at them all to start stretching already, with such a cute red face from all their teasing. You had talked with the coach for a bit, talking about up coming practice matches and warm up techniques. He had paused and looked at you with a sort of proud look. Only the coach knew you and Yukio were dating, and that was only after you two were caught lightly making out in the gym after practice when everyone left. You had smiled up at him and returned back to your topic on hand.

All through out the school day, you were holding his hand, knowing he would be shy about it and look down. You had caught his glancing up at you a few times with a small smile as you talked with him. You had gently kissed his cheek when you two were in a more bare hallway and no one was looking. You had gave him a cheeky grin and gave his hand a squeeze as he blushed and sputtered a bit in his words. You had laughed softly and smiled at him. The hall you two were going down was empty. So you had given him a gentle kiss on the lips, knowing damn well he would be flushed and red and a stuttering mess. You loved teasing him, but you stopped after a few kisses on his lips. You knew how much he could handle and right now you were sure you were one kiss away from-!

Your thought was interrupted when you were pushed up against the wall gently and kissed gently from Yukio. He had his hands against your hips, his eyes closed as he blushed such a dark shade of red. You had smiled into the kiss and hugged his neck as you kissed back just as gently. You both had pulled away when you heard someone laugh and call out to you. He had grabbed your hand and quickly walked down a random hall, keeping his head down as he huffed softly. He was needy, needy for your love and affection, and he was gonna demand it with a red face and a stutter.

You absolutely adored this side of your shy boyfriend, Kasamatsu Yukio.
