For people who haven’t heard: this month, the DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) are planning on updating the criteria for getting an autism diagnosis. On paper, this sounds like a good thing. It’s not.

The DSM is the handbook used by healthcare workers worldwide, for diagnosing mental disorders and the like. You may have read that the autistic diagnosis criteria is getting updated and, like many in the autistic community, hoped that this meant that it would be expanded, to make it easier for AFAB, transgender, and non-white people to be diagnosed (as it is notoriously hard for anyone except for white, cisgender men to obtain an autism diagnosis). However, they recently released a statement saying that they were not expanding the criteria, but were instead making it more ‘conservative’, as they feel autism is being ‘over-diagnosed’. (Which is, of course, bullshit for a whole plethora of reasons which I’m sure you’ve heard before.)

As-of my posting this, they have not released the official, updated criteria yet, so there is not much we can do right now. But there is one thing that we must agree upon: DO NOT SHAME PEOPLE FOR SELF-DIAGNOSING WITH AUTISM. Because obtaining an autism diagnosis is, quite literally, only getting harder.

#as someone who’s studying to become a psychologist people in the field need to take their heads out of their asses #and actually try to understand the issues with the field #like I am not completely anti psychiatry but there *definitely* needs to be an overhaul of the way things are run #if you want to get into psychology/psychiatry you should absolutely understand things from a non-individualistic level #because so much of psychology is so narrow that like. you miss very important factors by not studying other fields #I will always be a sociology shill but I think especially for fields where you’re dealing with people’s health you should have to take it #because the amount of times that social or societal factors are flat out ignored is astounding #and also!! as someone who’s probably gonna get a social justice minor #feminist/anti racist critiques of the sciences course should be mandatory for people in sciences #because without them that’s how you get doctors who think science can’t possibly be sexist/racist/bigoted because it’s objective #like take one look at the history of your field and then tell me that again #ANOTHER THING #there’s no official place where it becomes disordered in nature #like we just drew a line in the sand because we had to draw it somewhere #AND SO WHAT IF PEOPLE WHO ARENT AUTISTIC GET DIAGNOSED #you know what one of the main things for a diagnosis is?? clinically significant distress #I don’t care if it’s technically not autism or it’s technically subsyndromal if people are a) experiencing distress #and b) getting help from the label that comes with diagnosis #then it shouldn’t matter. because this is helping people adjust and understand themselves #I’m very passionate about this if you couldn’t tell
