She said she wanted to see “Big Ten″ school culture
“Abroadfest” was the event targeting Big Ten school frat guys- the boys rallying 10 tequila shots in a row, smashing their dull skulls with aluminum beer cans, snorting lines of cocaine post popping molly (because that makes sense), or hurling themselves off of roofs to land on moving vehicles.
So, you may ask, why would Lauren want to be around such numskulls? Well, why not?
Carly was my host for the weekend, I remember her already planning an itinerary for us when she came to visit Cope. I spent the flight watching Greta Gerwig’s Ladybird- a must-see, and developing story for a new short idea I’ve been wanting to write, “The Metro North.” But before I take you on a tragically tedious ramble on my adventures at Abroadfest, a quick note on Ladybird and some story/technical/visual elements I admired about the film:
On first impression, I admired the story’s honesty. I admired the simple nature of the complex mother-daughter relationship, nothing too dramatic occurs, yet we are able to feel completely engaged and empathetic to Ladybird throughout her coming-of-age journey. This lack of complexity in the plot makes the relationship reliant on the film’s dialogue, it’s both clever and real. I admire the structure of the narrative and Gerwig’s emotional beats, especially the scene where Ladybird is physically outraged but apologetic to her mother washing dishes because she won’t talk to her- this is a long, one- take shot, beautiful mis en scene, and deep focus in the image, highlighting the distance/tension between Ladybird and her mother. Visually, I admire the film Gerwig uses, it breaks up the film for a vintage feel which makes some of her stunning compositions even more ripe- one symmetrical composition that comes to mind is the image of Ladybird outside the corner store on her birthday, smoking a cigarette and reading a Playboy mag. I admire Gerwig’s visual emphasis on PLACE- symmetrical composition, and landscape shots- especially when driving- provides a feeling of constant motion, moving forward. Finally, I admire the soundtrack, and it’s timing. Their lyrics push the emotion in the story in their respective moments. Music is so very powerful, love Edgar Wright. Most important for me to learn from Gerwig here though is asking the question: Why is Ladybird so well-liked? I have this obsession to understand every successful protagonist(s)- and I define success as viewer empathy- and Gerwig fabricates Ladybird beautifully. She is spunky, her actions are somewhat unexpected, and she is made relatable for this. Most of the characters surrounding her are, in ways, her enemies, forcing the viewer to empathize with her most.
Okay, Gerwig rant is done, now back to Abroadfest. The weekend was full of the expected excessive Tequila drinking and glutinous Tapas eating habits. Sometimes, Carly and I were feelin a little classy and would open up a crisp $4 Rosé- wow, was Copenhagen unaffordable. The majority of concert events took place at either Razzmatazz- a warehouse-feel club closer to center city, or Shoko- an oceanside function with an indoor and outdoor space. On Thursday night, I cabbed from El Prat airport to Carly’s airbnb- I sent pictures of her lavish apartment to Ima and dad just to be annoying. It somehow made myself feel better for my reckless spending habits to show them other posh things I didn’t have. The space would be our pregame every night before hitting Razzmatazz or Shoko til 6 am. I was happy to spend time with some old friends like Matt, Jordan, Alana- Ooh and Meg was there!
Aside from the concert, I didn’t make it to as much sightseeing, as expected. The first day Carly and I woke up to walk around the city, I was a little ambitious seeing the 50 degree weather and wore shorts and a little top, this would catch up to me later. We made our way to the W hotel, a towering spectacle on the water. A Spanish woman with long and luscious brown locks, and a bright red jumpsuit to match her red lips, met us in the lobby. She was leading us to the “premium suite” on the 25th floor. And who’s suite was this? A club promoter by the name of Kike (pronounced Keekay)- a short little man with a high-pitched voice and a large personality. The doors opened to him greeting Carly- his face in her chest/an unforgettable sight lol- and a fully stocked bar of mixes, alcohols, and fruit. A large balcony held up a free-standing hot tub, and a man with a fedora lounging on a white couch with his arms wrapped around 2 other Spanish women. His eyes shot at me, and I had to shake him off the rest of the night. From here, we cabbed to Shoko and Night 2 began.
The next morning, Carly and I ate brunch at “Brunch and Cake”- an overpriced vacuum for American abroad students, like myself. One night before heading to the bars, we spent a gruelingly steep, 45 minute metro/bus/cab journey to a lookout called “Bunkers El Carmel.” We packed with us a kosher version of charcuterie, a fresh baguette, some red wine, and a few blankets to watch the city come to life after sunset. The lookout was packed with abroad students- alternative-indie music was bumping from scattered iphones, and every open crevice of a rock to sit on was taken. On another day, Carly took me to the La Boqueria, a famous outdoor marketplace in Spain, we stopped for a quick oyster, and to snap a few shots. We also got to catch the “Sagrada Familia”- Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece and a Barcelona city emblem. The work was brilliant. I learned in my Modern Frames Art class at DIS that churches were meant to be drowned by meticulous detail to draw their visitors away from reality as a method of finding truth, the Sagrada Familia affirms this, and the pictures don’t even do it justice.
Anyways, Barcelona, thank you for the quick stop for some sun and good company. I’ll be back!
And She Did.

As I left Thessaloniki on a train, so began my 8-day trek to Krakow.
Sofia
Among the few fellow travelers I met on the platform in Thessaloniki was Olivia, who I reunited with once off the train in Sofia and shared a taxi with to the hostel. Without us giving any hints, the driver suggested “Hostel Mostel?” which is apparently the overwhelmng first choice for visitors to Sofia. Olivia tried her Serbian and I tried my Polish and all three of us understood each other enough to have a few laughs.
Sofia provided a free walking tour introducing the diverse religious historical background of the city (now dominated by the Orthodox church, of which I witnessed one marriage and half a dozen more wedding photo sessions), the biggest hostel room I stayed in at 18 beds, a “lively” bar crawl, an introduction to my first Slavic language and culture of the trip and the level of customer service that accompanied it (low), and a stunning, long hike on neighboring Mt. Vitosha, during which I exchanged dozens of “dobry den”s with fellow hikers and enjoyed a meal and a beer in a mountain clearing.
My departure from this still-enigmatic city was with my first ride via BlaBlaCar (think Uber, but over long distances), leaving the (in)famous Hostel Mostel at 6am for the 4 1/2 hour drive into our next country, Serbia.
Belgrade
Upon drop-off by our driver Alex, my fellow rider and I headed towards the heart of the Serbian capital, towards our respective hostels. I checked in at Hostel Home Sweet Home, which turned out to be among the top few hostel experiences on the trip due to the sweet and fun-loving staff, the excellent facilities, and the friendly party animals that were my hostel-mates.
My first step was relaxation, recovering from the long, hot walk. Next, was a walking tour - unfortunately, I neglected to learn that Belgrade was an hour ahead of Sofia, leaving me to soak up a frosty Jelen at a nearby bar before joining the proper tour an hour later, skimming the intricacies of Serbian language and culture and concluding with stellar views from the historic riverside Belgrade Fortress.
The true highlight of Belgrade was the impressive - in quality and quantity - food and nightlife. From the quintessential burek slice to the Frisbee-sized burgers, Serbian food impressed and satisfied at very reasonable prices. Lack of reason, however, defined the hours until which we (American girl, Dutch guy, Polish girl, and two Kiwi guys) went out on a Monday (5am) and Tuesday (4am). These late hours were not due to the famous boat bars on the Sava, but instead on two small and wonderful underground, hidden bars we discovered upon with help of the Dutchman (and former Belgrade resident), in addition to a tucked away (but Googleable) craft beer bar close to our hostel. Luckily, the Serbian dinar flow a little less quickly than the beers.
After staying one extra night, I nabbed my second BlaBlaCar with a big Serb named Darko and his brother, en route to the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in Budapest. We struggled with heat and a long wait at the border, but other than that, had a smooth ride with only some language barrier.
Budapest
Budapest was the first repeat visit from a two-week trip I took to Europe during the summer of 2011. It was an equally short stop, but I got a very different glimpse of Budapest in a few ways.
Having been dropped off by Darko at my hostel in the afternoon, I decided to use the evening to refresh my memory of what I knew. I had delicious goulash (a soup more than a stew in Budapest) and took a long walk past Parliament, across the chain bridge, and back along the opposite bank, with a beautiful nighttime view of the center of government in Hungary, birds circling above in the hunt for bugs attracted by the lights illuminating the whole scene. I visited a couple of ruin bars (bars within funkily-decorated shells of Communist-era buildings) in the evening to familiarize myself with that component of the scene that I had missed in my previous visit. The next day, I stuck to my travel habit and took a free walking tour - a great reintroduction to the city I’d seen 5 years ago. As a result, I saw a few landmarks that I had missed on the first go-through, and was refreshed on plenty I remembered from the time before. I did my requisite shopping (for Hungarian salami and paprika) and eating before checking off another box that went empty on the last visit: the baths. Given my solo status (and a lack of buddies from the hostel) I decided to take advantage of the late-night hours on Fridays. I enjoyed the hot and cold of the Rudas Baths (est. 1550) from about 11pm to 2am before taking the long walk home with the sounds and sights of party-happy Budapest around me. In typical Doug fashion, I failed to give myself extra time in the morning to catch my 7am, 7-hour bus to Krakow. The subway my hostel referred me to was closed, forcing me to grab a taxi (infamous in Budapest for scams) to the bus station. I made it on time (in part because the bus was significantly late), but the taxi ride ended up being 3 times more expensive than my $3 bus ticket... Another experience I can only hope to remember and learn from... Unfortunately, I had a bit of a distraction from any real learning: the long-awaited return to the homeland and reunion with family.
