@amuletchosen | ❛ But I don’t know who is who! ❜ - jim to barbara (for jim's raised by trolls verse?)
Tumblr media
Barbara was still wrapping her head around the fact that her son was back: her perfect, sweet, Jim. Less than a year into the investigation, the case was put on the backburner, with the unspoken assumption that her son was dead hanging in midair. But she’d refused to believe it.
And now he was back.
Even if he didn’t consider her to be his mom anymore, if his last name was different and he insisted on going by James, he was back, and that was enough for her.
She frowned and adjusted her glasses.
“Ji--James, I know it’s overwhelming, but no one expects you to know everything,” she pointed out gently.

Send “blood stains” for a starter where my muse’s clothing is stained with blood.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, the blood made the injury look worse than it was. The front of Barbara’s shirt was stained crimson red in several places, as was the cloth that was currently wrapped tightly around her hand. Splatters of blood decorated the kitchen floor beneath her feet. The chef’s knife, the culprit of the whole scene, was still resting on the counter.
“---I promise I’m fine!” Barbara announced loudly, eyes wide as Karl stepped into the room.

@amuletchosen sent | “  why do you let me close? why me?  ” Strickler to Barbara
Tumblr media
Barbara frowned at Walt’s question. By all accounts, it didn’t make sense; the man had lied to her, tried to kill her son on multiple occasions, and had placed a binding spell on her. Any one of those should be enough for her to never wish to see Walter Strickler again. And for awhile, it had been the case. But now?
She sighed and stepped over to place a hand on top of his. “I know you had your reasons for doing all of those things. As much as I disagree with them. But the important thing is you’re here now. And you’re helping my son. That’s reason enough for me.”

@mythunderlegion | “ hey, look at me… you can do this. okay? you can. “ (walt and barbara walt and barbara)
Tumblr media
Barbara wanted to believe Walt. And on a certain level, she did. She knew her husband would never lie to her, that he only ever wanted her to feel safe and secure. But she was terrified.
She saw how much she had let Jim down, even if her son never outright said it. But she saw it. She saw how he’d had to take care of her for years. How he had learned to cook to ensure they ate proper food every night. How somehow in the years after James had left, their parenting dynamic had shifted.
And now she was expected to do it all over again?
“What if I can’t?” she asked, looking up into Walt’s green eyes, blinking back tears and pressing a hand to her abdomen. She was already starting to show, which only made it more of a reality.

@amuletchosen sent | “…Barbara, I know you said no murder, no killing but I did say that I will kill your ex-husband for you if he comes back. So…can I kill him?” Strickler asked rather calmly.

Barbara let out an exasperated sigh. She still felt on-edge after James’ sudden return. Her thoughts felt sporadic and rushed. “Walt,” she started before looking back at him. “I appreciate the sentiment. I really do. And I know it’s coming from a place of love, but please stay out of this. It’s bad enough that James is in town. I don’t want things to get even worse.”

@mythunderlegion | also Jim gets one because that child doesnt know how to rest
“Jim, you’ve taken care of me most of your life,” Barbara pointed out with a soft sigh. “And while I’ve always appreciated it, I’m the parent. I should be the one taking care of you.” She sat on the edge of her son’s bed.
“Let me help. Whatever’s going on, you can tell me.” She forced a soft smile as she looked over at Jim.

@akiridioncommander liked for a Barbara Lake starter
Barbara was exhausted: with three kids to care for, a rekindling relationship, a full time job, and the constant stress of worrying about Jim, she barely had more than a few minutes to herself. Which is all she had been looking for when she went to go lie down on the couch. The last thing she had expected was a knock on the door. And for Varvatos to be on the other side of that door.
“Varvatos? What are you doing here?” she asked, stifling a yawn and forcing a smile back onto her face.

Barbara doubted she would ever grow tired of watching her husband playing with their son. It was one thing to be in love with James, but seeing him as a father was an entirely new kind of love. One she hadn’t known existed. She often felt guilty for spending so much time away from her family: medical school was time consuming and she worried she was missing on moments. But James was such a good father, it at least eased her worries.
A light blush flooded her cheeks and she looked down. “If I am amazing, it’s only because you make it easy,” she finally conceded. She walked over and pressed a kiss to James’ head before crouching down in front of Jim- Jimmy, as they affectionately called him now.
“You are one lucky kiddo... and a drooly kiddo,” she noted, laughing as she grabbed a clean rag to wipe his face.

Barbara’s stomach was in knots, potentially for more reason than one. She wasn’t sure how to bring it up, let alone how to confirm her suspicions. It didn’t make logical sense, and yet she couldn’t ignore the signs: the nausea, bloating, missed period, and fatigue. Individually, no true cause for concern, but put together, could not be ignored.
“I don’t know if it’s actually news... more of a concern. Or a question actually,” Barbara rambled, wringing her hands anxiously in front of her.

It was like being trapped in a nightmare. How many times had Barbara thought about what she would do if James came back? What she would say and how she would feel. And yet now he was standing in front of her, and her mind was drawing a blank. She blinked back at him, as if hoping he’d disappear if she willed him to. Her heart was pounding beneath her ribcage in a way that she was certain James could hear.
But his words seemed to snap Barbara out of her shock. Her blue eyes flashed in irritation as she let out a soft scoff. “You need me? What about when I needed you? What about all of the times I had to stay up late caring for Jim? Or the nights he was crying for his dad? You have a lot of nerve showing up and saying you need me, James.”

@mythunderlegion sent | 💍 ‘  for your muse to propose to mine
Tumblr media
Even though Barbara was staring at the ring, even though she heard the question come from Walt’s lips, she was certain she was misunderstanding the situation. It seemed too rushed, too absurd, too everything. After James had left, she had all but written off the idea of marriage. It just wasn’t for her. At least, that was what she told herself.
There had been a brief moment when she and Walt had dated the first time that she thought maybe she’d be willing to try marriage again. But their first experience of dating hadn’t quite gone as planned. And now, with the impending war and tedious task of helping all of the familiars find families to adopt them, marriage was the last thing on Barbara’s mind.
“Walt--” Her blue eyes widened and she looked back at the changeling in stunned silence.

The slight shift in the bed was enough to wake Barbara up. She let out a soft moan as her eyes fluttered open. Even though the sun wouldn’t be up for several hours, she could see Walt’s eyes glowing softly in the space beside her. His breaths were ragged, as if he’d woken up suddenly.
“Walt?” she asked quietly, concern laced through her words as she propped her self up on her pillow. Her blue eyes searched his for a few seconds before glancing at her hand, seeing his hand wrapped around hers. “What happened?”

@fear-before-valor || Continued from here
Barbara let out a soft laugh as she watched Jim’s reaction to her attempt at breakfast. Jim was the sweetest kid she knew (although perhaps she a was a bit biased), but even he wasn’t perfect at masking his true feelings, especially when it came to her ‘culinary escapades’.
“Yeah- I was hoping the syrup-smile might mask the fact that these are the saddest looking pancakes I’ve ever seen,” she admitted with a grin. “I guess that’s what I get for going for generic brand,” Granted, these were probably more palatable than the ones she’d attempted to make from scratch.

The teen approaches slowly, fully aware of what the day means for the both of them. Shy and just a bit more nervous than he would be on a normal occasion, Jim clears his throat to get his mom's attention, a box of popcorn bags clutched in both hands.
"Hey, Mom. Um, if you don't... have any plans tonight, I was thinking... Did you wanna, maybe, watch some movies together? I heard there's a new superhero movie out."
October tenth was a rough day in the Lake household. Even though Barbara tried to put on a happy face every year and to make the most out of a generally terrible situation, nothing she could do would change the fact that James Lake Sr had marred the day indefinitely. No amount of cake, presents, or renditions of ‘happy birthday’ could make up for the fact that Jim’s own father had left on his birthday.
She looked up, pulling herself from the newspaper that she’d been forcing her attention on, a weak attempt to distract herself from the reality of the day. Her blue eyes glanced from the popcorn to the expression on her son’s face.
A smile formed as Barbara stood up and nodded her head. She could think of no better way to spend the day, to reclaim an otherwise terrible date, than to spend it with her son.
“I’ll order the pizza. Extra cheesy sticks?”

❝ non, je n'ai rien entendu. ❞ bonnie mumbled out timidly, an anxious tone being heard in her voice.
Barbara frowned and bent down so she was eye level with the =child. She didn't know a lick of French, but she could tell she was uncertain of something. "Sorry, sweetie. I don't know what you're saying... do you know any English?" she asked gently.
