Disclaimer: I don't actually have any thoughts myself, most of my slime love is just from when I was a kid and was playing RPGs about monsters and being endeared, but like... I saw one of your tags and was interested in asking about it, if you like, have any Slime Thoughts. Anyway. Thank you nonetheless

i….. i didn’t expect this and this is maybe the sweetest ask i have ever gotten in my life

to be completely honest, a huge chunk of my adoration of sentient slime just boils down to it being visually neat? it’s versatile! sentient slime can be adorable green blobs, or it can be grotesque abominations. look at the range from centaurworld’s Nowhere King, to my little buddies on slime rancher, a game i have 150 hours in

they can be as clean as sentient hand sanitizer or they can be walking biohazards. they can illicit comfort and guttural disgust. they are, crucially, goofy as hell. visually, i enjoy drawing slime guys because it’s easy to add a sense of motion- their drippy presence splashes across the page and makes for easy compositions, along with evoking that b-list 80s sci-fi vibe that i cherish so deeply. theyre even fun to color, with all that light bouncing around inside like a jewel

i think i also feel something for their amorphousness. there are more than a couple blob-monsters in media that are humans who have lost their form, and have been left with steeply limited shapeshifting. i think having to put all your effort into masking as something normal, when your natural form wants to sprawl and defy category, is a kind of tragedy a lot of people i know relate to.

and, well, when your local blob monster is just that- an amoeba-like, inhuman blob monster with absolutely no identifiable personality or characteristics- i just think that’s neat too, because i like to watch ooze do its wibbly thing.

luckily for you, i have a 2,000+ word rant in my notes app pre-prepared for this exact situation. sometimes i fantasize about grabbing someone's shoulder in a crowded party and reciting it word for word, to an increasing and enrapt audience.

unluckily for me, i wrote it like 2-3 years ago, at 3 am, while i was harboring a fever, and i now have to reread it before i decide to clown on the internet. ive already noticed a typo which means i need 5-8 business days of lying on the floor first, before i even consider posting opinions about Reagan on the internet.

the general tl;dr is that i find Ever After High fascinating as a narrative that was set up as being about social change and breaking societal constraints, but then got trapped in the constraints of it's very own delivery system as an extended advertisement to sell dolls. a narrative about narratives, about living stories trying to break free, got trapped into being changeless.

with the exception of the margot portrait, (which, despite being less flashy and low on reblogs, makes this list because it kinda proved to me that i was capable of Much more pristine styles?) i think my favorite pieces tend to be the ones where i was a lot more experimental with the scene and layout.

i think i did more of this in 2021 than in 2022, so im probably due for some more audacious pieces this time around.

14. How has your art changed over the years?

a few years ago, my art was in this stage where i went primarily for desaturated, monochromatic color palettes with a much more Gothic Horror lean for the subject matter.

it's... such a distinctly different era from my current sci-fi mutant lisa frank leanings. i mean lookit that, theres hardly a vaporwave in sight. looking at them grouped together, i find it interesting that i was more adventurous with painting scenes and backgrounds? but i also know i drew much less during this period, and was more likely to discard "comfort zone" drawings.

there was also a lot of personal growth occurring behind the scenes. i don't want to conflate dark subject matter with interpersonal darkness- far from it- but i do look back at these and see a different artist than who i am now, one who as kinda struggling. im doing a lot better now, and im genuinely pretty happy with the artist ive become!

i can literally pin the exact moment this style/overall genre shift started to occur, though.

margot goes to monster high, and is as close to a “The Fly” david cronenberg reference as the writers can make without invoking that great god, copyright law. roxanne also goes to monster high, but no one can figure out what monster she’s the daughter of, and she changes her answer every time. eventually, she just settles on “the french”. shyloh is the teacher for my-cult-ogy and has a penchant for burying students alive.

shirley also attends monster high until people figure out she’s just straight up a human wearing dollar store vampire fangs, and she gets chased out of town. this is probably actually for the better of all the monster high attendees, because she was definitely planning something van-helsing-ey.

meanwhile, xeno has put in like 20 applications for monster high, but xe’s actually stuck in snooty prep school territory with the other ever after highs, where xe is destined to become a mad doctor victor frankenstein type (despite some genre-appropriate cartoon squeamishness). xe hates every moment of it and xer only saving grace is the ability to study the narrative firsthand.

despite her decidedly spooky edges, lorna also goes to ever after high, as a lost lenore/edgar allen poe reference. she's a poetic goth love interest that's destined to die, and i dont think she's gotten around to being a rebel about it.

meanwhile, installation wizard goes to sky high. exe’s a sidekick because exe couldn't demonstrate any of exe.r technopath abilities in the school's limited framework. john is exe.r teacher and exe regularly just gmod noclips out of class.

20. What works have you drawn fanart of?

ough ,

i love media so so much, and yet. and yet. somehow, i almost never actually get around to drawing fanart. it's remarkably rare. i think the only times ive posted fanart on this account was hollow knight, and a scattering of animal crossing villagers

id love to get around to it more, if only to engage with others about the cool media i love. i think it'd be neat to loaf around and talk with anons about Whatever The Hell from blorbopolis.

21. Weirdest thing you've ever drawn?

i find myself wanting to define weird. is "weird" mushrooms and insects? is "weird" the clowns that line my mantle? these are not odd. these are simply offbeat. is it weird to create surreal art, art that's authentic yet odd? why must we relegate the avant garde and experimental into dismissive categories such as "weird", rather than embrace it on its terms and no what am i talking about its this thing

absolutely in love with that mad hypnotist piece! how did you get the halftones to look so nice if you don't mind me asking?

thank you! it was a new technique, so i'm glad it worked out. i use photoshop, and i have no idea how viable this is for other programs?

this is some post-processing you'd want to do after you've pretty much finished up. in the photoshop toolbar, under filter, there is an option under "pixelate" called "color halftones"

You Have De-Smoothed Your Boye

now, this is a bit much for me. you could probably get a more subtle halftones if you messed around with pixelate’s discreet settings, adjusted numbers and all that, but the strategy that gives me less of a headache is to duplicate my clean layer, apply halftones, and then turn the opacity down on the halftone layer.

you can probably stop here! it looks pretty good! however, i find it makes my art look 👌 just that liiiitle bit more like a shitty scan if i flatten the layers, go back under filter, and make uses of photoshop’s sharpen options. this is just a subtle thing that makes it that bit crunchier.

remember to save a smaller version of your image since introducing noise jacks up the file size in ways that make it a Big Chew to upload onto websites, and viola.
