if i had a nickel for everytime a tv comic book show adaptation where the main guy is a gruff man/ice king that's capable of committing absolute violence, who has a wife who can only be described as a literal angel, has a powerful presence/influence over said ice king - and that he just melts whenever he talks about his wife or is just in her presence, i'd have two nickels. which, isn't a lot but it's weird that its happened twice.

Thinking about The Boys again but mostly about Becca and Ryan, more specifically about Becca telling Ryan stories about Billy, Lenny (who’s alive in this canon) and Artemis but never actually mentioning them by name.

Thinking about Becca telling Ryan about Artemis and how they are so much like him, in that she has powers that she never really asked for but made them her own, and just Ryan hearing that makes him feel less alone and eager to see this Artemis person and her powers. (Becca kind of sugar coats the more nastier details of Artemis’ powers but she’s somewhat truthful about it).

And when Ryan actually meets Artemis face-to-face, he latched onto her like a koala much to their surprise because more often than not people are repelled/distance themselves from her due to her powers, appearance and just general presence/aura - and she just has a ‘artemisbutcher.exe has stopped working’ moment.

Artemis Butcher’s character establishing moment in The Boys is when she sneakily puts in her mixtape in her brother’s car when he’s gone, and when he comes back with Hughie and turns on the car - Cult of Personality by Living Colour plays. and Billy looks at her like this:

People: hold on Shallow, doesn’t Billy Butcher hate supes?

Long Answer: you do realise that Artemis Butcher is William’s sister? He can’t hate her because she’s the reason why Lenny is still alive. They are the bridge between the two now estranged brothers. (Lenny is alive because Artemis’s pleas for him to stop and her emotional breakdown stopped Lenny from doing the extreme thing, and instead chose to live but he can’t forgive Billy for leaving them both at the whims of their father. Even if Artemis’s powers could stop Sam from hurting Lenny, it still doesn’t minimise the constant terror they lived through when Billy wasn’t there.)

The Short Answer: Artemis not a corporate supe made by vought. yes her powers are the result of Vought's incompetence and carelessness when it comes to properly disposing of Compound V, but she isn't molded into a corporatised idea or character made to sell product or toys - she's her own person. She has free will and doesn't need to respond to a corporate body like Vought.

I should probably mention this but Artemis Butcher has a bunch of eyes and tiny mouths on their back, that sort of spread down to her arms (they’re cut off above her elbows). I’d say there would be about a total of eight or so eyes, maybe four smaller mouths with sharp teeth on her body all together. Also said eyes can be plucked out (gross I know) and they can be planted in an organic surface (like dirt/soil etc) and it essentially becomes a secret surveillance system of sorts. Creepy and gross I know, but hey you need to get your reconnaissance done somehow!

Also speaking of sharp teeth Artemis has like. Sharp teeth. Like enough that she can pierce flesh and has the jaw muscle power of a crocodile and rip peoples limbs off with just her teeth. I know that’s Very violent but that’s the point of the boys. because of this violence Artemis is capable of, Frenchie made a joke (back when Mallory was leading the Boys) that Artemis is a cannibal due to her feral nature.

The joke is funny at first but it backfires when Artemis starts to slowly play into the joke, and makes very disturbing remarks like “how nice it would be to make Homelander her chew toy like a dog with his bone,” which is immediately a partykiller, but Billy does get a genuine kick out this joke (for obvious reasons). Mother’s Milk is more so just done with everyone’s shit, and while he is also somewhat scared of Artemis, his ‘I’m not taking Billy Butcher’s bullshit anymore’ outweighs his fear of her. (It should be noted that later on in season one they do start to get along with each other a lot more especially with the saving ‘Kimiko’ thing but that’s a whole other story. That said if you had to make him choose which Butcher Sibling to hang out with, he’d choose Artemis over Billy).

So when the show starts and Billy, Frenchie, Hughie and Artemis have Translucent held hostage, Artemis makes a joke of ‘how interesting carbon would taste like’ and Hughie is so fucking terrified because it implies that she eats people and he’s even more terrified that Billy plays it off as a joke - and so he asks Frenchie if Artemis being a cannibal is true and Frenchie’s like:

“It started as a joke but now I don’t even know anymore man.”

Which in Hughie’s mind - implies that Artemis could be a cannibal and so he's trying his best to NOT PANIC in a situation where already they are walking on eggshells since locking up Transparent. Hughie REALLY DOESN'T want to be a supes meal so he does everything he can to make himself not seem like a good meal. but all of this panic and anxiety turns out to be a load of nothing and Kameron tells Hughie to his face that "No I'm not a cannibal, I just like messing with people" and then proceeds to give Hughie an elbow nudge - and Hughie?

Hughie is nervously laughing, still unsure whether Artemis is playing a whole fucked up prank on him as part of him still believes that fae COULD be a cannibal. But also he thinks to himself 'oh god there's something VERY WRONG with Billy Butcher's sister and I terrified of what it could be and I don't want to fuck around and find out'.
