Canon x Self Insert Hurt/Comfort Fic [Zoro x Rae]

Word Count: 965

Cw: Depression, self deprecation

Zoro is usually a heavy sleeper. The ship could be hounded by hail, wood splintering loudly from collusion. Hell, one could even smack him upside the head but he'll sleep through it all. A slight shift of the blanket and the bed gently popping back into it's natural position is what stirs him out of slumber tonight.

Zoro's eyes blink back sleep, adjusting to the darkness surrounding him before craning his head to the other side of the bed. It was somewhat empty. It's usual occupier, Rae, is sitting up; her knees bunched to her chest, arms resting upon them as she lays her head on top of her hands. Zoro sits up, petting the other's head.

"What's up?" He mumbles.

"It's nothing," She says back, staring into the darkness before her. Zoro grunts, trying to capture her visage within the moonlight. Her eyes are glossy and she's gripping one hand over the other.

He puts one arm around her waist and tucks her into his side, letting her lean into his side. She focuses on his steady heartbeat.

"Hey, look at me," He whispers in her ear. Rae turns to look at him, eyes watering more before she blinks the tears back. "Tell me what's going on in that head of yours."

There's no reply. She turns her head away again and he sighs.

This is going to take some time.

"Zoro?"

"Yeah, Rae?" His breath catches and he can feel her face scrunch up in response, trying not to make any sudden movements. He squeezes her tight.

"Why do you put up with me?" Her voice wavers a little before she continues, "I mean, I cry all the time and I do stupid shit that I know is grating and annoying but you don't leave. None of you do."

Zoro lays down with her in his embrace, shifting the woman onto his chest as she begins to sniffle. He slowly rubs circle onto her back as he responds, "I'm not gonna disagree. You do do a lot of stupid shit."

"Thanks" she weakly chuckles.

"You didn't let me finish. Yeah, you do stupid things but I actually enjoy your antics. I like when you hassle me into play wrestling with you. Or when you hear a song you really like so you do that weird dance to get me to join."

"That's my best move."

"You look like a worm on a hook."

"Well, you like that wiggling worm so..."

The two share a quick chuckle before going back to silence. "And ," Zoro's low voice breaks the pause, "While I can't understand why so much affects you, I like it."

"Not-not in a weird way!" He sputters, just realizing how the last statement sounded. "I just appreciate that you wear your heart on your sleeve. You want the whole world to know you feel and that you're not sorry about it. It feels right to me, that you let me in, sewn closed and all."

He looks down, only to see Rae's eyes staring up at him. His tan cheeks gently glowed pink as he moves his head away. "The others appreciate it too, I guess."

"It just feels like there's something wrong with me," She shifts around to move her arm under her. Her hand grabs the middle of her chest as if she wants to dig something out. "It feels like there's a part of me that's just wrong, something that I was born with that I can never get rid of."

"And I-" As her voice cracks, Zoro continues to rub comforting circles on her back. "And I hate waiting for everyone to notice so they can just leave already."

Zoro frowns. He knew about Rae's depression, the fear that of being alone yet feeling like she deserves it. They had a few late night chats about it but never one with tears. It tore at something in him to see his girlfriend breaking apart.

A finger curling under her chin encourages the woman to look up at her boyfriend. His eyes takes in her tear slicken face; his face emitting nothing but fondness.

"I'm gonna tell you something, alright? And you gonna are wear it around like that little heart on your sleeve, got it?"

"Okay..."

"There's nothing wrong with who you are. And I know that you think there is but it doesn't matter what you believe because I know the truth. You don't deserve to be alone, not in the past and not now. Robin is not going to leave you, Chopper is not going to leave you, nobody is going to leave you. Especially me. You clawed your way into my heart, into my being, and I'll be damned if I don't have the rest of my time making you comfortable there."

"How long are you planning on doing that?" She hiccups.

"For as long as you allow me."

"Even if it's for forever?"

"Only if it's for forever."

Rae sobs into his chest, hot tears dripping onto his chest as he cradled her close. They stood like this for a few minutes, with her crying and occasionally squeezing him tighter as he places soft kisses on top of her head. She sniffles, peeking up at him with bleary eyes.

"Who knew the great Roronoa could be romantic," She jokes.

"Oh my-" He groans.

"Taking some lessons from Sanji?"

"Don't bring up that shitty cook when we're having a moment."

Rae softly laughs and then nuzzles against the man. She hums happily. "Thank you for that." Zoro kisses her temple in response. "Get some rest." She slacks a little, exhausted from the crying and comforted by the warmth of him. He waits until her breathing relaxes before drifting off himself, still holding her close against his heart.

I guess I enjoy how protective we are of each other. But it's not in like a uncomfortable possessive way! Like, for me, whenever he's heavily injured and still healing, I watch over him to make sure he sleeps properly and that people don't try anything stupid when he's wandering around. While Zoro makes sure I don't fall off the ship when looking overboard and if I'm too anxious to stand up for myself, he gets the point across.

Hello @v01ds-selfshipping ! Thank you for sending me this ask! I'm gonna go for Z//ro with this so buckle up, it's gonna be a long one.

📝 - What's their name? If you and your f/o picked it, how did you pick it? Or if they picked it, how did they?

Since there's 3 of them (gotta keep the 3 theme going with this man!), we're gonna go in birth order. First up is the only boy, Daisuke. Z//ro chose it and at first, I thought he picked it to be silly and as a call out since we're assuming he's gonna grow up to be big (have you seen Z//ro after the timeskip?). But when I saw that he wrote it down as "big ceremony", I realized it was a lot more sentimental.

Next is Kuin//. We both came to a mutual agreement that we would honor Z//ro's close friend in some way after the kids were born and this felt like the perfect way.

And lastly, there's Isla. Ngl, I knew I wanted to name a fankid Isla if I ever shipped in One P//ece so here she is! But in-universe explanation, she's a relatively calm, low maintenance baby so the name matches perfectly.

🎂 - When's their birthday, if they have one? If they don't have a canon one, what do you hc their birthday is?

They were all born on May 3rd!

Currently in my brain scape, they're around the same age range as my mutuals/buddies' fankids (Hi guys!). So I say around grade school, early middle school age?

Daisuke and Kuin// are little silly menaces fbghbh Z//ro was feeding them but kept teasing the spoon away. All you hear after is two little voices chanting  "Cereal!" and hearty laughter.

Isla takes a little bit to talk. When I went with Isla in tow to check on Z//ro when he's cleaning his swords, she tries to over reach for that cotton (?) thing and says "Help". Cue him taking her into his lap and cleaning stuff that isn't swords with that utensil.

🚼 - When did they start crawling? Likewise, when did they start walking? Were you prepared for it or were you caught off guard?

It's gonna be a theme that Daisuke and Kuin// are more enthusiastic about things while Isla takes her time. The crew's over and L//ffy is encouraging the babies to come to him, slapping his legs and all. To everyone's surprise, Daisuke actually makes an attempt to him and takes a couple of steps with Kuin// close behind.

With Isla, it's much more calm dvguju We take turns helping her walk back and forth between so when she actually takes her first couple of steps, we're much more prepared.

🎒- What was their first day of school like? Did either of you cry or were they happy to go to school? Did they like it?

I really don't know the schooling system in the One P//ece universe dgnijki There's just kids just everywhere doing random shit. But if they did go to a school or classes, I feel like all 3 would end up of crying a little bit. Z//ro would have to stop me from sitting in their first lesson with them. But we stay within view for the first 15 minutes so if any of them get anxious, they'll see us right there. They would end up having a lot of fun by the end of the day.

🚗 - Did you teach them how to drive? If so, how did their first lesson go? Are they a natural or do they need a lot of practice? Do they like driving or does it scare them?

This scenario is mostly for fun since cars are kinda weird in this universe too!! I think Z//ro has driven a speedboat so he thinks that's comparable to actual driving. There's a lot of him not knowing the controls, Daisuke attempting a donut, Kuin// cheering him on and me and Isla panicking in the back djtuhj

Shout out to all of the self shippers who suffer through sleep paralysis episodes. Your f/os completely understand if you're too afraid to fall back asleep and will stay up with you for as long as you want! They'll do little things to distract you like watching your favorite series with you or talking about your day.

Fantasy/Royalty AU but:

Instead of your S/I being royalty, they're either relatively close to those who are royal (lady-in-waiting, advisor, etc.) or are servants (maid, butler, stable hand, etc.)

The royal heir's matching ceremony/party is tonight and because of everyone's hard work (and the heir is cool like that), all servants are allowed to attend!

The party is in full swing. Everyone is dancing, mingling and overall having a good time. You scan the room, making eye contact with the heir and wave at them. Just then, a slow song starts playing with everyone making their way to start dancing.

You turn to see who 'your highness' will choose when you suddenly catch a glimpse of someone. Making their way to you. When you finally fully turn towards them, you immediately know who they are. It's F/O!

They were the talk of the kingdom since arriving. A lot of work gossip involved them too it seems. F/O is a popular choice this evening, surrounded by people who were vying for their attention. So why were they walking to you currently?

F/O stops in front of you and you both stare at each other before they reach out their hand. Wait, were they asking you for a dance? You point at yourself, confused and a little bit flustered. They let out a small chuckle and bring their hand closer. What do you do?

For me, I have a pair of furlined boots I wear whenever it gets cooler. I ran my last pair ragged so I'm gonna do the same for these fntjbjj They're just really warm and comfortable and easy to put on.

For Z//ro, it's his haramaki. His fall one is a bit thicker than his regular one but the extra thickness and pressure is comforting to him. Do they both look the same? Absolutely.
