          nancy  doesn’t  like  this.  she  doesn’t  like  the  idea  of  splitting  up—especially  not  after  everything  that’s  happened.  she  understands  why  it  has  to  happen  ( they’re  able  to  cover  more  ground  and  all  that )  but  she’d  much  rather  be  there  to  go  WITH  him.  though  she  knows  he  won’t  be  alone,  it’s  just  hard  to  see  him  go—she’s  already  grown  incredibly  attached  to  him  again.  she’d  always  cared  about  him;  never  stopped  caring,  but  now  that  they’d  managed  to  cross  the  boundaries  over  into  relationship  status  again,  well—things  were  different.

          “ i  don’t  like  this,  steve… ”  she  murmurs,  tone  laced  with  worry,  despite  his  reassurances.  she  walks  him  to  the  door  of  the  cabin,  converging  there.  she  can  feel  him  take  her  hands  in  his,  listening  to  him  explain  how  everything’ll  be  okay  and  how  he’ll  be  back  before  she  knows  it.

          begrudgingly,  she  accepts  this  ordeal—not  like  she  has  much  of  a  choice,  anyway—and  replies,  “ you  just  better  be  REALLY  careful,  okay ? ”

          his  promises  that  he  will  does  little  to  quell  the  worry  in  her  gut,  or  does  the  slightly  lingering  kiss  he  presses  to  her  lips  in  reassurance,  but  nevertheless,  she  accepts  it  and  kisses  him  back  while  she  can.

          nancy  realizes,  in  retrospect,  that  maybe  bath  products  weren’t  a  gift  you  could  just  GIVE  someone  and  not  expect  them  to  look  at  you  funny.  because  the  look  eddie  is  currently  giving  her  fills  her  with  ANYTHING  but  confidence.  she  feels  horribly  embarrassed,  cheeks  flushing  a  dusty  pink  as  she  avoids  his  gaze.

          the  l’oreal  shampoo  and  conditioner  and  irish  spring  soap  were  ones  she  always  used—ones  that  her  mother  always  insisted  on  buying  for  their  house—and  when  nancy  had  stayed  the  night  with  eddie  and  noticed  the  state  of  his  bathroom  she  had  to  do  something.  for  his  benefit  and  her  own—especially  if  she  ever  intended  on  spending  more  time  with  him,  which  she  did.

          “ you  hate  them, ”  nancy  guesses  suddenly,  shaking  her  head.  “ i’m…sorry,  i  was  just—i  wanted  to  do  something  nice  for  you  and—i  promise  they  smell  good. ”  but  eddie’s  reaction  still  isn’t  promising  and  nancy  now  has  the  worry  that  she’s  offended  him  in  some  way.  “ no,  y’know  what—never  mind.  i’ll  just—i  can  take  them  back— ”

          the  feeling  of  his  lips  on  hers  is  ( thankfully )  enough  to  silence  her,  and  she  can  only  blink  in  surprise  at  him  for  a  moment  before  murmuring,  “ eddie,  i—  what—? ”

just something that i’ve been thinking about since starting to write more on nancy is that when it comes to shipping, if you think that you can only use my nancy as an “afterthought” ship, i’ll softblock. i don’t think it’s fair to me for someone to only pay me or my nancy attention when they have no one else to do shippy stuff with. i’m not talking about multishipping and that you can’t give your attention to whatever ship you want, but i AM saying that nancy isn’t a muse that you can use as “leftovers” when you aren’t getting to write a ship that you want. give nancy the same energy you give your other ships or don’t ship with me at all, please.

this isn’t directed at anyone in particular, just a general statement because i get really invested in my ships and it can be incredibly disheartening to not have that feeling returned. so, for real, if you aren’t serious in trying to build something up with my nancy (whether it’s romantic or otherwise) please don’t waste either of our time.

          surely  this  is  a  cruel  joke.  there  has  to  be  some  sort  of  irony  to  go  along  with  those  words.  nancy  had  grown  up  in  a  household  DEVOID  of  love.  she  couldn’t  remember  ever  seeing  her  parents  show  much  affection  towards  each  other,  if  any,  as  a  kid,  and  she  certainly  had  never  been  able  to  form  a  bond  with  her  father.  sure,  her  relationship  with  her  mother  wasn’t  TERRIBLE  but  she  and  mike  had  grown  more  and  more  distant  over  the  years  and  the  THIRTEEN  YEAR  AGE  GAP  between  her  and  holly  made  bonding  even  harder  than  it  had  been  with  mike.

          maybe  her  family  did  love  her  in  some  weird,  fucked  up  way,  but  nancy  truly  couldn’t  feel  more  detached  from  them  all,  most  of  the  time.  she  wondered  how  much  more  it  would  change  when  she  finally  got  to  go  off  to  college.

          “ do  they ? ”  nancy  asks,  unable  to  keep  the  sarcasm  out  of  her  tone.  “ because  if  that’s  true,  i  couldn’t  tell. ”

          she  already  knows.  it’s  clear  to  see  that  he’d  never  gotten  over  her;  that  try  as  he  might,  he  could  never  find  someone  to  fill  the  void  she’d  left  in  his  heart.  she  didn’t  know  if  she  should  feel  bad  or  relieved.  she  wanted  steve  to  be  HAPPY,  but  not  at  any  cost,  apparently.  the  more  she  acknowledges  the  sickly  sweet  thought  that  he  couldn’t  replace  her,  the  more  guilt  she  also  feels,  but  beneath  that,  there’s  a  sense  of  pride.  she’s  left  her  mark  on  him.  he’s  hers  forever,  for  better  or  worse.

          but  the  PRIDE  of  knowing  this  comes  from  also  knowing  that  SHE  wants  him,  too.  she  is  forever  marred  by  the  man  who  is  s/teve  h/arrington.  she  knows  the  thought  is  also  SELFISH,  but  if  he’ll  have  her  again,  after  everything,  she’ll  take  it.  she  doesn’t  want  anyone  else.  she  never  will.

          “ i  already  do, ”  she  tells  him,  quietly.  her  hands  reach  for  his  face;  fingertips  brushing  softly  over  his  beauty  marked  skin.  “ you’re  the  only  one  for  me,  too… ”  she  just  hates  that  it  took  her  this  long  to  admit  it  to  herself,  much  less  to  steve,  himself.

          nancy  is  far  more  smug  than  she  has  any  right  to  be.  though  it’s  hard  not  to  be  smug  when  she’d  swept  steve  away  from  t/ammy  t/hompson.  the  jealousy  had  been  too  much  to  ignore  and  she’d  gotten  him  to  come  with  her.  a  quickie  in  one  of  the  bathroom  stalls  simply  hadn’t  been  enough,  either.  nancy  is  still  on  a  high  while  they  ride  in  steve’s  car.

          she  keeps  stealing  glances  at  him  out  of  the  corner  of  her  eye,  looking  away  every  time  she  can  feel  him  about  to  look  back.  a  no  good  smile  tugs  at  the  corner  of  her  lips  as  she  contemplates  on  whether  or  not  she  should  follow  through  with  the  thoughts  in  her  mind.  but  he  wouldn’t  mind,  would  he ?  surely  the  quickie  in  the  bathroom  wasn’t  enough  for  him  either…  couldn’t  hurt  to  test  the  waters,  right ?

          a  perfectly  manicured  hand  slowly  starts  to  creep  its  way  across  the  console  and  into  steve’s  lap.  she  can  feel  his  eyes  on  her  then,  but  she  doesn’t  look  back.  she  palms  at  his  groin,  any  little  noises  she  receives  from  him  as  a  result  are  music  to  her  ears  and  prompts  her  further.  he  always  did  make  the  prettiest  noises  when  they  were  together…  it’s  a  reminder  of  just  how  much  she’d  missed  them.

          she  touches  him  with  purpose,  listening  to  the  hisses  that  escape  him  but  she  doesn’t  finally  look  over  at  him  until  he  calls  out  her  name—a  way  of  saying,  ‘are  you  sure  about  this ?  i’m  driving,’—and  it’s  then  that  she  grins  simperingly  at  him,  eyes  alight  with  mischief.

          “ you  can’t  tell  me  that  our  little  tryst  in  the  bathroom  was  enough  for  you,  steve, ”  she  croons,  almost  dismissively.  “ you  did  the  right  thing  by  picking  me  over  tammy…  the  least  you  can  do  is  let  me  reward  you  for  that… ”  her  hand  slips  up,  away  from  the  forming  bulge  to  skillfully  pop  open  the  button  on  his  pants  and  slip  her  hand  inside  to  fully  touch  him.  “ but  if  you  really  don’t  want  this,  you  can  tell  me  to  stop…  but  i  promise  i  can  make  it  worth  your  while  if  you’ll  let  me… ”

          vecna’s  words  rang  in  her  head.  she  did  what  she  could  to  get  away  from  him,  but  it  hadn’t  taken  long  before  he  had  her  cornered  again.  she  watched  in  terror,  screaming  at  the  top  of  her  lungs  as  his  claw  of  a  hand  hovered  above  her  head.

          this  was  it,  she  thought.  she  was  about  to  die  and  there  was  nothing  she  could  do  about  it.  She’d  outlived  her  usefulness  for  him  now.  He  didn’t  have  any  messages  he  needed  relayed  to  el.  she’d  tried  to  kill  him;  lit  him  and  his  house  on  fire;  watched  it  go  up  in  flames.  she  shot  him  down;  watched  him  writhe  in  pain…  there  was  no  way  nancy  was  getting  out  of  this  one.

          and  then,  suddenly,  she  was  awake  and  falling.  the  ground  met  her  ass  and  she  yelped,  already  knowing  that  she  was  about  to  be  horribly  bruised.  but  she  hardly  had  time  to  process  that,  or  much  of  anything  else  when  she  felt  herself  being  scooped  up  in  a  pair  of  strong  arms.

          and  that’s  when  she  saw  his  face  and  her  heart  nearly  exploded  with  relief.  his  soothing  words  made  her  eyes  well,  and  she  could  hear  the  emotion  cracking  his  voice,  repeating  how  he  thought  he  was  going  to  lose  her.

          leave  it  to  steve  to  be  right  by  her  side  again.  always  there.  always  with  her.  always  looking  out  for  her.  god,  she  loved  him…“ i’m  here, ”  she  croaked,  throat  tight  with  emotion.  “ i’m  okay— ”  her  hand  reached  up,  caressing  his  cheek,  and  that’s  when  she  could  feel  him  swoop  in,  capturing  her  lips  with  his  own,  and  she  melted.  her  hand  moved  up  into  his  mess  of  brown  hair  and  she  kissed  him  back with  as  much  fervor  as  she  could  muster.
