The darkness that surrounded you was clearly haunting and eerie.
It all felt as if it was all a dream, hearing the voice calling out to you for the past few weeks, only for its owner to finally appear in person in front of your mirror in the dressing room.
To be fair, any average person would be frightened if they had witnessed the figure slowly emerging from the mirror, but for some reason, you were not—you felt calm. You wanted to do all you could to get to know the person behind the voice you have heard.
Hence, you were slowly descending into the underground, and the light from above began to diminish. There was this mysterious ambience that just took over your situation, causing you to wonder what exactly was below you and, of course, who exactly was this person right in front of you.
When you slowly walked further down, you eventually ended up in a candlelit passageway. It was long, and it would take quite a bit to fully reach the other end of the tunnel.
Thanks to having some vision now, you could distinguish the person holding your hands gently as he guided you through the passageway. His hair was a bright crimson red and parted to the sides. He wore a tailored black suit that fully complemented his tall, slender figure. A black cape was draped upon his back, swaying from side to side with each step he took.
But the most prominent item that made him stand out was his white mask. It wasn’t a full-faced mask; it only covered half of his face, making you wonder what exactly he was hiding beneath the barrier between the mask and his face.
As much as you wanted to question his motives for bringing you down here and even his appearance (especially that mask he wore), something in your gut just told you that it wasn’t the right moment to do so. Thus, you kept your mouth shut and continued with your journey, letting only the sounds of your footsteps and the crackling sounds of the fire from the candlelights upon the walls fill your eardrums for now.
As you made your way towards the end of the tunnel, the man in front of you seemingly grabbed one of the candlelights on the wall as he shone into the dark path before you. To your surprise, you have noticed how it was a maze of passageways in front of you now. Anyone who wasn’t familiar with this place would get lost, and it would take them days to be able to find their way out.
But the man seemed unfazed as he immediately illuminated one of the passageways with the candlelight and guided you in. As you both continued walking for what appeared to be as long as twenty minutes, you finally arrived at an underground lake with only a single wooden boat that floated upon the waters.
“Hop on in," the male instructed as he slowly guided you to get onto the boat. You lifted your dress slightly, making sure not to lose your steps, before eventually getting in and finally sitting down and making yourself comfortable.
Once you were ready, the man hopped on the boat and took out an oar that was situated beneath it. He then began paddling as you moved forward.
As you both paddle forward, you begin to feel the air becoming much cooler and damp, making your skin crawl slightly. At the same time, you swear you had heard distant whispers coming from different parts of the underground lake. You still have no idea where you are headed, and it seems the man navigating the boat won’t speak anytime soon.
The boat moved forward until it reached a specific part of the lake lit by candlelight, which was quite beautiful. But given your situation, you couldn’t fully enjoy the whole boat ride. It would’ve been romantic if Sangyeon was paddling the boat with you; you were with a stranger, after all.
After minutes of paddling, you both eventually reach the end of the passageway, and beyond you is a vast grey metal door. The mysterious man got off first before extending his hand to you again to help you slowly got out from the boat.
He slowly brought you towards the door and gently pushed it open to reveal a huge underground lair hidden away from the opera house. You slowly took in the sight beyond you; never in a million years would you have thought such a place like this would exist beneath the famous Paris Opera House.
Even though it was hidden from the outside world, the place was filled with luxurious decor, such as red fabrics and furniture that would cost a fortune. The countless candlelights scattered throughout the lair primarily illuminated the entire place. A line of mirrors filled the walls, causing you to be able to see your reflection no matter what direction you turned to look. A few mannequins were also placed randomly across the place, all of them dressed up with theatrical props in their hands.
However, the most intriguing part of the lair was the massive organ that was situated towards the wall.
You have heard the faint sound of this particular instrument up in the Opera House countless times, but you never questioned it since there is no organ up there, and you wouldn’t want people to give you weird looks; hence, you’ve always brushed it off, thinking that your brain is playing tricks on you.
But after witnessing the instrument right before your eyes, and hell, even having the voice that you have heard for months suddenly emerge from your dressing room’s mirror and take you down here to an undiscovered hidden lair, now you know that those weren’t just hallucinations nor dreams after all.
The mysterious man returned right in front of you as he took both of your hands into his, giving you a smile that somehow seemed bittersweet before finally speaking up.
“How long have I waited for this day to come. We’re finally reunited, Christine.”
It was that name again.
You were still genuinely confused with everything, especially when this strange man kept addressing you with that particular name. You needed to know the answers, so you mustered up the courage to confront the man despite feeling all anxious and weirded out.
“I
umm
I’m not who you think I am.”
It turns out you have given the wrong answer as the bittersweet smile quickly faded and was replaced with a frown, clearly showing that the man was upset.
“You can’t be serious, Christine. I’m not here to play games. It’s me, remember?” He half-chuckled while having this desperate look in his eyes.
But you just had to speak up the truth. “N-no. I’m not Christine.”
In an instant, the grip on your hand tightened slightly as the man took a few steps towards you, causing you to back away. The intensity in the air slowly began to get to you.
You couldn’t pinpoint the exact emotions in his eyes—teardrops were slowly starting to form, and there was this sad yet disappointed look as if he had been entirely heartbroken.
“There’s no way you’re saying this to me, Christine. We dominated the entire Opera House and were known as the best couple in the facility’s history.” He huffed.
You were terrified. “Pl-please
stop.”
But he doesn’t. “Don’t you remember? You and I performed the famous The Magic Flute by Mozart.”
“N-no
stop
”
At this point, he raised his voice ever so slightly. “And there was literally a fire that burnt down the Opera House! We both helped evacuate the entire audience and cast members from the building, leaving us both behind.”
A fire? But that happened like 40 years ago

Suddenly, you felt your back hit against the wall and realised that you were now cornered. The mysterious man was now just inches apart from you, still fuming, and you figured that he would not stop anytime soon.
Releasing his grips from your hands, he pins both of his hands onto the wall, trapping you to ensure that you wouldn’t have any escape, nor would you have anywhere to turn to but to face him only.
“Christine. We promised each other we would be reunited, and now it’s finally the time. So, why are you being like this to me? What happened when we were both separated?”
This time, tears began to well up in your eyes as your anxiety got the best out of you. The only thing that was in your mind at this moment was your fiancé. You wanted to just run into his arms so badly right now.
“S-sangyeon
.help me
” You mumbled.
A few seconds later, you started to feel that your head was becoming heavy, and your legs were just about to give themselves up. Sure enough, you eventually dropped to the ground, your eyes slowly closing shut before you ultimately blacked out.
Tumblr media
You have no idea how long you have been out, but you know it was long enough to get rid of the headache you felt during the encounter you remembered with the mysterious man.
Oh right, the strange man!
You quickly shoot up to find yourself lying on a luxurious bed draped with red velvet fabric. The man must have carried you here after you passed out.
Instantly, you heard the soft, faint sound of the organ being played in the other side of the room. You figured it was the man keeping himself occupied while you were asleep. You tip-toed towards the door and slowly opened it to peek through the room. As expected, the male was playing the organ and did not notice the little squeak coming from the door, which made you give yourself a little deep breath to calm yourself down.
You slowly walked toward the male, keeping your fingers crossed and praying he wouldn’t turn to look back in your direction. You were planning to escape there and then, but that was when you noticed his mask.
You have always been intrigued by it when you first met the male but never dared to ask him about it. Given your previous experience with the man himself, you figured there was no point in asking him about it, and you wouldn’t want to risk yourself fainting again from his tedious interrogation.
Hence, you slowly turned back towards the organ, creeping up on the male while he played the instrument. When you finally reached his back, you contemplated whether it was now or never.
In a swift motion, you quickly grabbed his mask from behind and took it off instantly, causing the male to turn back towards you immediately.
And that was when you realised that you had made a fatal mistake.
Half of his face was disfigured, which was why he covered it with the mask. It looked terrifying and too much for you to stomach it all up. Adding salt to injury, the man began fuming again, his face red as he rolled his fists up, slowly approaching you.
You slowly backed away, which triggered the alarm in your brain to go off.
You needed to get out of here. Immediately.
In a flash, you quickly dashed towards the front door, not even glancing back as you were terrified that he would be chasing after you. You did the same thing as how you had gotten here in the first place, going back onto the boat and then back through the countless passageways, hoping that your memory was still fresh and that you would eventually see the light again.
Back in the lair, the mysterious man stood in the middle of the room, kicking over a box filled with props to release his anger.
He slowly made his way towards one of the mirrors on the wall, looking straight at himself and at his disfigured face before he pointed directly at himself in the mirror.
“I’ll be sure to make you fall in love with me again, Christine, just like you did all those years ago.”

A/N: and so the actual plot begins đŸ„ł
Tumblr media
July 1921
It was the summer of an exciting year ahead, and here you are—skipping your way enthusiastically as you make your way to the building of your dreams.
You had just recently graduated from Conservatoire de Paris, which is one of the top universities for future artists like you to begin their journey in their very own choice of expertise in performing arts.
It was also where you met the love of your life, Lee Sangyeon.
It was a shocker to you that he was even in the performing arts department because, really, he seemed more like the type of person who would enroll in business or finance instead. With how he presented and styled himself, you thought it had to be a joke at first for him to even have a thing for music.
That was until you both met a year prior, in one of your musicals—where the both of you were chosen to be the lead roles of the show. Things started awkward initially, for you were shy and always reserved. At the same time, he was the outgoing one—seemingly being the one who would always start a conversation with someone new in the theatre department daily.
You knew from the back of your mind that since you two were the show's lead stars, someone definitely had to break the ice for sure—of course, it was the man himself.
In the beginning, you felt really awkward since you definitely felt bad that Sangyeon always had to be the one to initiate a conversation or even speak up for you in certain situations. But over time, you have come to grow more comfortable hanging out with the guy himself and got used to his lame dad jokes that he often made to get your reaction (because he apparently loved it a little bit too much).
Eventually, you both begin to realise that you’ve had feelings for one another. You both begin spending more time together and eventually put up a great show for the season—arguably one of the best performances the university has ever had for the past decades. With that, you both were rewarded the title “outstanding actor and actress of the season”, and that was where you got the opportunity to pursue your career here at the Paris Opera House.
Additionally, you have got to give some bonus points to your boyfriend because never in a million years would you’ve thought for him to come from a noble class family with actual ties to the infamous building itself.
Hence, here you were—holding a bag of your belongings, ready to begin your new journey ahead.
Giving yourself a deep huff, you straighten your back and lift your head high as you enter the opera house.
Let’s do this.
Tumblr media
In the blink of an eye, it has already been months since you’ve gotten a job here at the Paris Opera House. You came in with a positive mindset, thinking that you would be getting your grand debut at the well-known theatre and have a great kickstart of your upcoming career as a professional opera singer.
It turns out that the real world is a lot cruel and harsher than you thought it was.
As much as you had a great reputation back in your university—even having way more experience than most apprentices who first started at the theatre, you were eventually placed as a backup dancer in most of the shows you were in. Even when you were lucky enough to portray your singing abilities, the best you were given were some minor roles where you would step in to support any absentee among the minor casts.
To make matters worse, you have yet to hear a word from Sangyeon since you both graduated from Conservatoire de Paris. He was away for some family business in Romania, and it could take him months or even a year to return.
It pains you how badly you both would be separated from one another for god knows how long as you sent him off back at the train station eight months prior. You both hugged one another as tightly as possible, not wanting to let go.
Sangyeon promised to write a letter to you as much as he could—sure enough, he kept his promises as you would receive a letter each month. But his physical absence during your darkest times was horrendous, and you were left alone to deal with your misery.
You tucked away the most recent letter that you received from your significant other into your little box of collection of love letters between you two and placed them right above your fireplace. Standing up from your wooden stool, you made your way to the tiny little mirror you kept by your bedside to do a final check to ensure your outfit and face full of makeup were ready.
Mentally, you reassured yourself that today would be great and you were definitely on the right track of growing as a performer, which would eventually lead you to score yourself with more prominent roles in the future.
Practice makes perfect. That was the motto you have always lived by, even today.
With that, you took in a deep breath and gave yourself a smile while filling your thoughts with positivity as you exited the comforts of your tiny home.
Tumblr media
As much as you thought it was an ordinary day today at the theatre, you were now met with a disastrous situation that has made everyone mad. The lead singer of the Paris Opera House, Madame Indivus, has just called in sick, and she will not be able to make it for the opening performance of Orlando tonight.
Panicked, everyone desperately tried to talk against each other, trying to figure out who would step in to fulfill her role. It wasn’t an easy decision, as Madame Indivus has created quite a reputation for herself. She wasn’t known to be one of the most recognised sopranos of the decade of the theatre for no reason.
As the chaos ensued, one of your costars joined you as you stood at one of the corners of the stage, witnessing how messy the entire situation unfolded before you. She nudged at your shoulder, trying to get your attention.
“Hey, Y/N. Maybe it’s finally your turn to shine.”
“What are you talking about, Avaleigh?”
“Oh, come on, you know what I exactly mean. It may finally be your turn to prove to everyone that you are as capable as Madame Indivus or even better than her!” She reassured.
Sure, you were always grateful for Avaleigh being your number-one fan and supporter ever since you both started your journey here at the opera house. She has always been there at the beginning and has kept you company while your partner has been away. When she first heard you sing when she bypassed your fitting room, she was convinced that you had the voice of an angel and could potentially succeed Madame herself someday.
As much as you were grateful for her support and encouragement, there was just no way you could convince the other costars and the higher-ups from the theatre. You were just a mere ordinary girl who danced with a group of backup dancers in all of the shows. There was no way the theatre owners, Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette, would allow a minor cast like you to take over the grand performance for tonight.
Before you could shut down Avaleigh’s crazy idea, you were shoved to the middle of the stage as she stomped the ground and cleared her throat as loudly as possible to get everyone’s attention.
God no, Avaleigh.
“Everyone, may I have your attention, please? I believe my friend, Y/N, has the perfect solution to resolve this mess we are in now.”
She then looks at you with glistening eyes as if she were a girl who had just gotten her favourite candy at the candy store, waiting for you to speak up.
Hesitating for a moment, you decided just to give it a shot. It didn’t matter if everyone thought it ridiculous, but it was your only chance to prove that you were a very talented soprano.
‘I
I volunteer! To step in and fulfill Madame’s role.”
There was a moment of silence, where everyone had their eyes fully on you and stared at you in a very confused manner. Seconds later, a huge laughter would erupt in the hall—causing everyone to laugh at your ridiculous offer.
“Don’t be silly, miss Y/N. You are just a backup dancer and nothing more.” Mr Arnaud chuckled as he was on the verge of having tears in his eyes while taking one of his napkins from his back pocket to wipe his eyes dry.
However, Avaleigh was not going to back down from this. “I’m sure if you all hear her sing, you will most definitely change your mind and give her a chance.”
That has intrigued both Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette, and they decided to spare at least the next five minutes just for you to portray your so-called capable talent to the crew.
Rubbing your hands nervously together, you decided to speak up. “I
 umm
can sing this one song I wrote not too long ago if that is okay for you, Mr Arnaud and Arquette?”
When both men nodded their heads and gave you permission to take over the stage, you straightened your back and cleared your throat.
It was now or never.
Think of me, think of me fondly, when we've said goodbye. Remember me once in a while, please promise me you'll try. When you find that, once again, you long to take your heart back and be free if you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me.
Your voice first began a little more shaky than you expected, but as soon as you got the hang of it, you decided to press on and continue with the song.
We never said our love was evergreen, or as unchanging as the sea but if you can still remember stop and think of me.
As you approach the second verse, you regain the confidence you once were proud of when you performed on stage. With that, you finally felt relief and eased your tension away as you fully immersed yourself in the song and truly enjoyed the moment.
Think of all the things we've shared and seen don't think about the way things might have been.
Your voice filled the entire opera house and has definitely left all of your costars and owners' jaws wide open. Who would have expected a backup dancer like you, who always played minor roles in all of the performances, to possess such an angelic voice?
It was as if your voice would melt the hearts of those who listened, and now they finally get to witness how the “outstanding actress of the season” from Conservatoire de Paris truly shone her brightest when she was on stage.
Just as you were about to reach the final verse, the door to the hall slammed open, and it would be the person you have been longing to see.
It’s Sangyeon. Here in the flesh, right in front of your eyes. He’s back.
Seeing this as an opportunity, you decided to sing the very last verse dedicated to him as he made his way towards the stage, you tried your best to fight back the tears that were now forming in your eyes.
Think of me, think of me waking, silent and resigned. Imagine me, trying too hard to put you from my mind. Recall those days look back on all those times, think of the things we'll never do there will never be a day, when I won't think of you.
With that, he finally got himself up to the stage and gently embraced you, where your tears finally steamed down on your face. It was this scent that you missed, and so was his warm hugs that would always seem to take all of your problems away.
In return, you received a huge applause from your costars as they cheered for you. One of the owners, Mr Arnaud, then approaches you.
“Well, Y/N. You surely have outdone yourself. And I am pleased to pass on the role of Madame Indivus to you for tonight’s opening performance.”
Having no time to waste, both Mr Arnaud and Arquette clapped their hands together to get everyone back to their positions, seemingly trying their best to get their feet back into the final rehearsal before the audience arrived and filled the place up.
You then felt a set of fingers lift your chin and redirect you to look in the direction of the love of your life, and it was that smile of his that made your tears start to reform once again in your eyes.
“You finally did it, Y/N. Your very first major role in the opera house. I am beyond proud of you, my love.” He then leans in to place a quick peck on your lips, knowing that as much as you both would like to rekindle and savour more of those kisses, there were more pressing matters.
Before breaking off the embrace, you gave a little bop on his nose with your delicate fingers.
“You sure know how to make an entrance, young man, for that song was written and dedicated just for you.”

A/N: hi hello! it's been a while since ive updated this and i apologise for that 😭 but Chanhee finally makes his appearance in this one so yall better buckle up 👀
Tumblr media
It was thirty minutes before the show was about to start, and everyone was getting their final bits done, doing some final touchups on their makeup, and even ensuring the props were placed in their right positions. You were getting ready as you decided to move closer to the stage and slightly peered at what was out there.
The hall was filled and packed with audiences despite still having ample time before the show began. With that, you were now a nervous wreck. You feel your legs go numb, and your heartbeat is ten times faster than you would usually feel before getting ready for a performance.
Sure, you are considered one of the seasoned backup dancers for the opera house, but never once have you had to step in for an actual lead role and perform at one of the world’s renowned opera houses and in front of thousands of audiences.
Suddenly, you felt a string of knots form within your belly. You were so nervous that your anxiety kicked to the point that you needed to wrap your arms around yourself to refrain from causing a scene backstage.
That was when you felt a hand on your shoulder; it was Avaleigh.
“Honestly, Avaleigh. This is such a bad idea, I know I shouldn’t have—”
“Calm down, Y/N. Remember the breathing exercises we’ve always done whenever we did warm-ups together before rehearsals?” Avaleigh cut you off and tried her best to calm you down, reassuring you that everything would be alright.
“B-but, what if I don’t perform the way Madame would? The crowd would surely be disappointed, especially with how she has been the face of the Opera House for a decade now.”
“Y/N, this isn’t about Madame. It’s all about you portraying your best out there. You don’t have to live in Madame’s shadows or take over her personality. You go out there and just be yourself, exactly like how you’ve proved Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette this morning.”
With one gentle slap to your back to wake you up from your senses, Avaleigh gave you one last smile before returning backstage to reunite with the other dancers as the lights began to dim in the auditorium, indicating that the show was about to start.
That was it. The stage was now all yours as you had to step out to sing the opening act before the rest of the cast members would join you in the following act.
Taking a few deep breaths, you constantly reassured yourself that everything would be alright.
You proved yourself worthy and finally got the chance to be in the spotlight after many months, Y/N. It is truly your time to shine now.
When the lights went off throughout the theatre, it was your time to move towards the center of the stage within five seconds before the spotlight would eventually shine down on you.
You counted internally as you moved towards your spot; eventually, the spotlight shone upon you.
Sure enough, you heard a few gasps throughout the entire theatre. There was no doubt that people expected Madame Indivus to be the one up on stage, not some other actresses who would replace her at the last minute. Through the corners of your eyes, you noticed how several people began whispering amongst each other, and that just made the knot in your stomach feel ten times worse than before.
That was until you landed your eyes upon your fiancĂ© sitting below in the first few rows close to the stage. There was this look in his eyes that just calmed down your nerves almost instantly. He mouthed a little, “you can do it, love,” before giving you his signature smile, which you always loved and would make everything seem bearable even during tough times.
Returning a smile, you lifted your head high before finally opening your mouth to sing aloud, just as you presented yourself during the rehearsals.
Slowly, you began to relax your shoulders and felt all of the tension between your joints being released. This was when you finally let loose and portrayed your best talents that you have had for so long.
Almost instantly, smiles were plastered across the audience’s faces, giving you enough confidence to boost yourself and move on as you began singing the opening act smoothly as you practised.
Maybe, I could do this after all.

The show went on fairly smoothly and quickly for the next two hours, and you and your whole cast received a standing ovation at the end of the show. With you being in the center of the spotlight, it was a sign to you that the people have accepted you to be part of the leading actresses in the opera house, and so did both Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette, who were both sitting in one of the stalls at the side that were always reserved for them both.
Your fiancé joined along with the crowd, throwing you a rose to the stage while the rest of the audience followed, indicating that it was all a successful show as all of you bowed and the curtains were laid slowly down on stage.
Immediately, your cast members were beyond proud and happy to be working with you for the upcoming shows, and they couldn’t wait to see what the next show would be before the opera house would be off for a week.
After some light refreshments and talking amongst each other, you slowly returned to your dressing room, turning the doorknob and opening the door to see the man you have longed for.
You immediately jumped into his arms as he caught you, spinning around in a few circles before placing you back down.
“You did so well, Y/N. Did you know that you were magnificent and captivating up there?”
“Now that’s rude. I thought I was always beautiful in your eyes.” You sulked.
“Of course, I was just joking; you know how much I love you, Y/N. You outperformed yourself up there. It brought me back to when we were both young and performing together in university,” Sangyeon remarked.
“Hey, we aren’t that old yet!” You were about to gently slap the man on the arm, seemingly waking him up from reality.
“Okay okay, miss Y/N,” he chuckled before he pulled out something that he had been hiding behind his back. “I got these for you.”
It was a bouquet of flowers, not just any flowers, but ones that you have always adored, lilies.
You took the bouquet in your hand, and you couldn’t help but bring it forth to whiff the fresh scent. “Aww, Sangyeon, you didn’t have to.”
“Just so you know, I handpicked these lilies myself. They came all the way from Romania, so you bet how hard I’ve taken care of them myself during my stay there and on the train back.” Sangyeon exclaimed, lifting his head up high as if he wanted the world to know that he had done such a good deed and needed to be praised aloud.
You giggled at the sight of your fiancé being childish in front of you, which you have gotten used to ever since you both started dating. It was a little something that you enjoyed, to be quite frankly. He was a pretty goofy guy, after all.
With that, you slowly placed the bouquet down into the white vase right by your vanity area, all while your fiancé approached you to give you a tight backhug.
“Say, Y/N. I’ve booked us a fancy dinner down at Bouillon Chartier. Care to join me for some candlelight dinner?”
“Why, of course, young man.”
You both broke off the hug and linked hands as you exited the room, turning off all the lights until you heard a faint voice.

“Y/N, is something wrong?”
As much as you swore you heard it, you did not want to make it a big deal or cause a commotion. Hence, you reassured that everything was fine and convinced yourself that it was probably all because of the fatigue you had been dealing with for the day.
Stepping out of the room, you slowly grabbed the doorknob before fully closing the door, hoping it was all in your mind.

Since that day, the audience has demanded that the opera house cast you in more shows for the remaining seasons. As a result, swarms of letters began to pile up in the office, leaving Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette with no choice but to adhere to the public’s cries and wishes. Given that Madame Indivus was not returning for quite a while, they had no choice but to roster you as the lead female singer and actress until the season ends.
With that, you have been cast and performed a handful of productions since that first day. Thankfully, your confidence got better, and so did your performance on stage. The public now absolutely adored you, and your face would be plastered all across the Opera House, even up to the streets of Paris.
Of course, you were beyond grateful for that, as it has been your dream to finally perform at the famous Paris Opera House. It was why you even took up your studies in performing arts at Conservatoire de Paris in the first place.
Undoubtedly, your times at the facility were becoming much more prominent and memorable. You were able to get close to your cast members and break the ice between them, ensuring all of you worked together as a team to give the best performance for the season.
At the same time, your fiancé was now back with you in Paris, and he was doing as much as he could to support you and the opera house with his connections to the best of his abilities. There was nothing better than having him back with you in your arms.
However, amidst your grand success in the limelight, something eerie and terrifying has also been bothering you.
It seemed as if the voice you heard the other day in the dressing room was far beyond the last. Ever since your first grand performance, the voice has become much more prominent and frequent, even getting slightly louder each time you hear it. Given that most of the time, you would be in your dressing room alone to get ready for a show, the tension and air were significantly eerie, even making it hard to breathe at times.
Making sure you weren’t hallucinating, you went about the whole opera house, asking everyone if they had ever heard a mysterious voice. To your surprise, none of them has ever heard of such an occurrence; some even mentioned that it was all in your head, and you couldn’t blame them.
You tried getting your best friend, Avaleigh to return to your room one evening to see if she could hear anything at all. It turns out that your efforts were wasted, and there was no point trying to convince her because the tension in the air shifted once there was more than one person in the room.
With that, your only hope was your fiancé, Sangyeon.
After the final performance of the season, you insisted that Sangyeon were to visit your dressing room almost immediately once the audience began to head out to the exit.
Judging from your facial expressions as he entered the room, he knew something was fairly wrong.
“Y/N, have you been too exhausted lately? Is having back-to-back shows too much for you? If yes, I could always talk to Mr—”
“Sangyeon. Whatever I’m about to tell you now, please listen closely and carefully.” You cut him off before taking a huge breath, trying to cough up the words you have been desperately trying to tell him.
“I think
that there’s a ghost in this room.”
There was a silent pause before Sangyeon eventually cracked up in a burst of laughter.
“You must be insane, Y/N. I’m sure it’s definitely got to do with you being exhausted—”
“I’m not joking, Sangyeon! I’m serious; I have heard voices since that first day!” You exclaimed, trying your best to prove your point.
But clearly, your fiancĂ© was not having it. “Y/N, ghosts aren’t real. There’s absolutely no way that you have been hearing things.”
“Oh yeah? Then let me prove it to you.”
With that, you placed your fingers onto his lips, silencing him. The room was quiet now, and you waited a few minutes, hoping the voice would reappear.
But it was to no avail.
Sangyeon sighed before gently taking your fingers away. “Y/N, babe. Let’s just go home now, shall we? I’ll have to meet with Mr Arnaud and Mr Arquette to discuss a few matters first, then I’ll be back to pick you up.”
You sighed, disappointed that you couldn’t even earn your fiancé’s trust.
As he left the room, you started packing your things away as you prepared to wait for his return.
That was until you heard the voice again.
Christine

However, it was getting louder this time.
Christine
CHRISTINE!
What was going on?
CHRISTINE!!!
With that scream, you turned to face your mirror, which was situated right by your vanity area. Sure enough, a dark figure, wearing a mask covering half his face, emerged from the reflection.
He reached out his hands to you.
“Christine
come to me
” the voice called out pleadingly, desperate and sad, wanting you to grant his wishes.
Indeed, there was no one else in this room, and you figured that “Christine” has got to be you.
You slowly walked towards the mirror before giving a soft, gentle reply. “Are you
calling for me?”
“Yes
I have been wanting to meet you for so long
”
“Umm
but who are you—”
“It is not safe to speak here
come with me
I will tell you everything
”
Well, a little trip to find the answers wouldn’t hurt after all.
With that, you slowly reached out your hand before the figure in the mirror extended theirs so that it was peaking out of the mirror now, grabbing firmly yet gently onto yours as he pulled you in closer, guiding you to enter into the mirror.
Just like that, your dressing room was now empty, with no one around, and you were being led further down into God knows where, your vision fully clouded and dark.
“Oh Christine, how long have I finally waited to be reunited with you.”

September 1881
Flames.
That was the only thing within Chanhee’s sight as the blazing inferno surrounded him. But it did not start like this, at least from a few hours ago.
It was an ordinary day at the Paris Opera House. Tonight was the finale of the current ongoing show of the season, Romeo & Juliet, which the entire town had been enthusiastic about for months. Since it was the finale, the hall was filled more than two times the usual norm of attendees.
However, perhaps it was karma, or someone decided to sabotage the performance as the rope tied tight above the ceiling to keep the chandelier in place was slit.
Throughout the performance, the chandelier's weight seemingly became too heavy for the rope to keep it in place, and finally came crashing down onto the stage during the climax.
Almost immediately, the flames from the chandelier candles started spreading across the wooden stage, eventually leading up to the curtains on both sides of the stage and the entire opera house.
Everyone was frantic as they ran, screaming at the top of their lungs, trying their best to push against one another to head straight out to the exit. It was only a matter of time before the smoke started engulfing each of the attendees and the performers’ airways, where it got increasingly hard to breathe by the minute.
As Chanhee was the appointed master of the opera house, he was responsible for ensuring that everyone evacuated safely.
This included his long-time lover, the best singer in the opera house’s history, Christine Daae.
She was the first person Chanhee immediately jumped to rescue as the chandelier dropped down directly onto the stage. After ensuring she was safe and unharmed, he also elicited her help to ensure everyone was evacuated from the building.
With the help of both of them, they managed to get everyone outside of the building within twenty minutes, leaving them the last of the bunch to stay behind to deal with the inferno that was increasingly becoming out of hand by the minute.
“Chanhee, please, get out of there! We have to go!” Christine shouted as one of the pillars came crashing down in front of them, separating them as they were blocked on each side.
“No, Christine. You should leave first. This is my opera house, and I am responsible for dealing with this mess.”
“But please—You know how well this is all too much for us to handle!”
Immediately, Chanhee tried his best to come close as he reached both of his hands out to cup Christine’s face, resting his forehead against hers.
“My love, you know that I would do anything to save this precious place of mine, and you know how much this building means to me. So I will stay behind to deal with this, and don’t you worry, for I will make sure that we will meet each other again real soon.”
Chanhee used his thumbs to wipe away the tears falling down her beautiful face and gave her a quick peck on the lips, trying his best to savour the moment as if it were his last.
“Promise me. We will find each other someday. And that I will always love you, no matter what. So please, go, now.”
Christine nodded as she returned the kiss to Chanhee. “I promise. I will come to find you if that’s the last thing I’ll do.”
With that, Chanhee lets her go as she turns her heel back and runs out for the door before another pillar comes crashing down, fully blocking the only exit from the building.
Chanhee then turns his heel back in the opposite direction, he walks into the burning flames, hoping to save his beloved place that he has worked tirelessly to build up over the past two decades.
Little did they know that this was the last time they would cross paths and never hear from each other again.
