#''the highest of hells a kaleidoscope of fire and writhing glass eternal damnation''
someday i gotta draw grinpayne to the tune of this late game disco elysium quote because it really makes me feel some kind of way:
Few of us can begin to imagine the horror of you - with all of creation reflected in your forebrain. It must be like the highest of hells, a kaleidoscope of fire and writhing glass. Eternal damnation.
Even when you're sleeping... And when you wake, you carry it around on your neck. With eyes open that cannot help but swallow more behind the mirror.
The arthropods are in silent and meaningless awe of you. Know that we are watching - when you're tired, when the vision spins out of control. The insects will be looking on. Rooting for you.
And when you fall we will come to raise you up, bud from you, banner-like, blossom from you and carry you apart in a sky funeral. In honour of your passing.

fire and flame are such important motifs in disco elysium. they’re the opposite of the title of the game, actually--disco inferno rather than disco elysium. learning through suffering and pain.
but de makes it so abundantly clear that life as a whole is burning. i put something very similar to this on another post but all of it makes me think so hard about the fact that, despite everything, harry knows instinctively that his name “should be deep gold and orange, like a forest fire looming on the horizon”. and in response to that revelation, inland empire says le retour is is “golden red, inside you, but also outside, on the horizon.” tiago tells you the mother of silence must be worshipped with “a burning heart”, and the paledriver says that being deep into the pale is “like autumn. dark grey and orange, the orange of streetlights and the color of trees in the electric light.” harry can tell the phasmid life is like “fire, burning”, and in response, it’ll say “existence must be like the highest of hells, a kaleidoscope of fire and writhing glass. eternal damnation.”
and that’s all there is! fire and writhing glass. sodium lights and the sky. harry is a violent, irrepressible miracle, and yet he can’t put the smoke back in dora’s mouth. because at the end of the day, at the end of the world, life and the pale alike--the spot so deep in where you’re inundated in the past of humanity, drowning in other peoples lives and memories--are burning. it’s looking at the endless darkness, at inaction and silence and nothingness and choosing to embrace pain and burning light and wanting things from people who don't want to give them to you. and there’s no love more powerful than that. a ocean of nothingness surrounding people who burn for each other

Disco Elysium | of creatures and life
i exist. i exist too. interspecies encounters. the collective voyage of billions of beings. all of nature is a kind of horror. though none is as horrible as you. a violent and irrepressible miracle. the vacuum of cosmos and the stars burning in it are afraid of you. the arthropods are in silent and meaningless awe of you. the younger brothers of creation. becoming human is a process of becoming with others. friction and strangeness within togetherness. something singular, irreducible and vast behind each relation. a multitude of life beyond sense and matter. i’m glad to be me - an incredibly sensitive instrument. the highest of hells, a kaleidoscope of fire and writhing glass. eternal damnation. the storytelling animal. it isn’t enough to call us animals. even animals aren’t animals. ich will werden was ich werden will - totipotent. a great democracy of creatures. all human beings care about each other. this kindness that human beings do not lose. we have nothing else to give. of all the creatures i’ve met you are the kindest/scariest/most beautiful. awareness of belonging to the world, delight in being part of the world. our kinship as animals with animals.
