also i should note that i developed a way to fix karlach's engine that aligns with what larian also mentions before larian made that new ending lmao. she has to return to avernus because therein lies the magic and the special metals to ever think about fixing it. this is the only time she aligns herself with a devil , one opposing zariel to do so , working as a double-agent. i'd say war breaks out , but there's always war and she plays the game until she can get to the factory. with the new devil's help and the right tools , the engine is stabilized. there's little worry as to if this devil lied because he needs that engine stabilized as well for him to use karlach as his weapon now.
a couple months of a new war , he wins. she gets sent back , engine will not overheat and now provides the actual aid that it provided zariel whenever. longevity and an inherent resistance to fire and heat.

through my discussions with @wolfpackmuses , zombie's steele and just ... my general feelings on the characters, i really think it adds some interesting depth / more layers to the film to have the idea that perhaps steele and jenna were friends at some point. perhaps before balto lived in the area, or before jenna knew balto, and when they were right out of their teenage years. perhaps jenna and steele had a moment of possible romance. but then steele just. kinda. keeps going downhill ; he gets more and more arrogant as time goes on and as he wins, immerses himself in his musher / team, and starts seeking endless glory. i think there is a part of jenna that knows steele ; she knows when he's lying, she knows he's full of narcissism and rage, and she's disappointed in what he's become, and that place of knowing could be deeper than she's just a perceptive, empathetic individual ; maybe she was, once, also his friend.
the film doesn't touch on it, of course, but another interesting thing to think about is that those sled dogs lived a harsh and brutal existence most of the time, and it makes a lot of sense that steele would have grown up bitter, violent, and narcissistic. the dogs were often trained with fear and abuse tactics, and the leads kept the other dogs in line by use of force. they had to remain the alpha to remain the leader. there was no room for weakness or sensitivity ; they were ready to be challenged always because they needed to be ready. jenna, of course, is not a sled dog, and so she's valued for her companionship and emotional sensitivity. steele, on the other hand, would not have been. and so, he's playing his part for the humans, and playing it well, and so is she. and in that, they can't ever relate to each other. any friendship they had would have been doomed from the start.

You’re not easily swayed by what other people say and stay true to yourself. This doesn’t mean that you force your ideas on others, though; you’re rather the opposite. You don’t have any preconceptions or biases, thinking it’s stupid to jump to conclusions before actually getting to know anything or anyone. You have a logical brain. You don’t accept anything if it doesn’t make sense to you, so you constantly ask “Why?”, until it does. You don’t want to do anything you don’t like. You’re generally a very realistic person, but you’re sometimes prone to impulsive decisions. While you’re very strong-willed and decisive, it doesn’t quite show just by looking at you. You have the special ability to get at the heart of matters, getting through tasks effectively.

saw byron lore from the ultmania and I'm not actually mad about it. some spoilers following:
Byron Rosfield and Eugen Havel have an interesting background together. Byron is 56 years old, Havel is 57. The book mentions:
-They have been battle buddies for decades
-Havel and Byron are often bickering, but they trust each other and always have each other's backs
-Year 850 (Byron Age 28, Havel Age 29) Byron meets Havel for the first time at a conference when Elwin and Clive went to survey the mothercrystal at Drake's Fang. The two immediately got into an argument.
-Year 857 (Byron Age 35, Havel Age 36) Worked together to fight for the liberation of Kanver, became battle buddies
-Year 878 (Byron Age 56, Havel Age 57) Fought together again at Randellah
The book does not mention Byron ever marrying anyone, although it does say that Byron made a fortune and pays a lot of taxes (like the good man he is) lol.

i'm reading over jing yuan's lore page trying to scrape together thoughts for some headcanons and this line from his character story kind of jumped out in regards to some thoughts i have and the way i write him.
'how can anyone return to the past ?' is particularly striking not only because his past is important to him, but also because of how it's said in regard to what is being said. jing yuan's saying this in the context of playing a game of starchess with fu xuan, saying there is no going back on the chessboard, which i think also speaks to the way jing yuan tends to view the world, being regarded as a strategic genius, but not known for his martial prowess. he shares a feature with several other characters i've written in the past, which is viewing life and the world around him as a game of chess, with the people around him being pieces. his saying that there's no going back on the chessboard and wondering out loud how anyone could return to the past are almost in contradiction with one another and the parts of jing yuan we see in the more recent story quest. there's several occasions where jing yuan is shown to be longing for people from his past, particularly dan feng and yingxing, seeing them in dan heng and blade, respectively. in jing yuan's voice line about dan heng, he says 'i understand the one i wished to trace...exists only in memory now.', which is really referring to dan feng, lightly implying some kind of romantic feelings towards dan feng, but overall the line itself reads and is spoken with a heavy tone of longing and sadness, and the same can be said about jing yuan upon encountering dan heng for the first time. consciously, he understands that who he's seeing is not the person he used to know, nor the one he's longing for, but there's a difference between what his brain understands and his heart will listen to. in his voice line about blade, he says 'if he were to forget everything, it would make things a lot easier for me.'. with blade, i genuinely believe that his feelings are far more complex, since blade and yingxing are two sides of the same coin, or rather, that yingxing exists as a shadow of blade now. jing yuan has conflicting feelings, in my opinion, about blade as he did towards yingxing ( it's not actually that conflicting, but rather something jing yuan didn't really want to confront ), and is struggling to separate them in a way. it's a little easier for him to accept that blade and yingxing are different people entirely, but that doesn't stop him from trying to see yingxing in blade. jing yuan is indeed someone who longs for the past, in contrast to what he might say or present sometimes. at his core, jing yuan is deeply sentimental and emotional, burdened by the weight of the memories he carries and knowing the people he cares about most are gone, 'scattered to the wind' as he himself says. as the general of the luofu, he doesn't spend much time looking backwards, knowing that moves on the chessboard cannot be undone and that strategies can only be formed on the basis of moving forward, gaining ground, breaking lines. however, jing yuan himself is someone that always finds himself looking backwards, lost in his memories and forever tied to the way things once were, unable to truly sever himself from it.

he does not handle jealously well at all. it would be his no. 2 reason why he would kill someone. he would smile and act unbothered but he's already killed you in his head 10 times.

the fact that karlach probably just blips out half of what happened in avernus in the way that she doesn't forget, she just honestly doesn't want to physically remember the actual war part. she'll tell some silly stories of the parts that weren't war, but she's honestly so horrendously traumatized over a lot of it that she will NOT talk about the rest of it.

i really, really don't like this scene. i don't like how balto treats jenna here. this is also right after she's stood up to steele for him, and she's also been the only one who has stood up for him consistently throughout the film.
i understand that this is an emotional outburst from him because he's very hurt and upset, and that it's exhausting to deal with being bullied constantly by others. so i know it's obviously coming from hurt, and that jenna is the 'safe' person in the room to offset his emotions onto, too. but even still, jenna doesn't deserve being treated this way!!! and it really sucks they never had a scene in which he apologizes to her for this, as it was super uncalled for. jenna's such a good person; she never even holds this against him, or brings it up again even though she's dealing with so much emotionally herself (rosie's on the brink of death!!!)
anyway it's uncool and this scene has always bothered me.

TRIGGERS: mentions of d*pression, s*icidal thoughts
Uta 'dying' at the end of Film Red was all staged by Shanks and the Red Haired Pirates. While she was below deck and recovering under Hongo's watchful eye, the rest held a 'funeral' for her, intentionally covering the casket with their Jolly Roger and throwing both eventually overboard to make the World Government think that Uta really died.
What really happened was they took Uta to their base island in the New World so she could heal and come to terms with what happened on Elegia. There, what followed was months and months of recovery, filled with night terrors, depressive episodes and suicidal thoughts before she made any progress and during that time, she didn't only have the support of Shanks and the crew, but everybody else who lived in their small community on the island.
She stopped singing for several months, rather sticking to simply humming to herself when the silence around her was too deafening. Uta needed to come to terms first that her voice was her greatest weapon and that she almost enslaved the entire world with it just to create a fictional utopia where everybody would be happy.
Uta eventually started sailing again with Shanks and the crew, though only as the captain's daughter rather than musician, still scared of causing havoc once more should she start to sing again.
While she tries to maintain her bright and cheerful personality ever since, Uta's more skittish and takes some time to open up to somebody new, unless she already knows them or has heard stories about them from people she trusts.

you know, the fact that jill was basically trained as a weapon and assassin since age thirteen should mean that, despite the very complex feelings she has surrounding shiva, she has an exceptional control over her eikon + several ways in which she could use it to kill sb or even several people and that makes me even more sad that she didn't use any of them against imraenn.

Def don't imagine Delly offering to embroider tiny little images inconspicuously into her friends' Reaping Day clothes for good luck. Or just in general once she's in District 13 because everyone needed a little extra luck at that point and District 13's clothes are just so boring. Where did she get thread in 13? Idk, since she grew up in a shoe shop, she probably was put to work sewing or something and would have squirrelled away tiny bits of thread where she could.
