My mother and I got Pei Wei today, and on the backs of the fortunes in their fortune cookies, they’ve got a word in Chinese with its English translation above and the romanization in parentheses after each hanzi.

My mother’s had “peach,” which is 桃子. I assume it’s just 桃 for the tree and 桃子 for the fruit. In Japanese, 桃 is used for both.

Mine had “banana,” which is 香蕉. I knew the first character but not the second, so I decided to see if it existed in Japanese too… and it turns out they’ve got not only the character, but also the whole word too! It’s an obscure term, though, and mostly they’re just called バナナ (banana). The individual characters mean “fragrant” and “banana; plantain.”
