This is not about shaming people who don't ride the bus, by the way. There are many reasons other options are chosen, including an unmet need for better bus service. Alright, I don’t talk about myself much, but I’m at a bit of a turning point.
SSD/I is grilling me over shit outside of my control and while I still have it, I don’t know if I can have faith it’ll hold out.
My partner is dealing with a bad worker’s comp case she’s preparing to get shut down on and essentially bullied out before she can settle and yes, she’s got a lawyer but if life goes sideways on us at-current, then we’re kinda boned.
We’re preparing to sell the house and downsize and, I don’t know, crash with her grandmother or something until we can take a direction again.
Meanwhile, we live in Alabama and you’ve seen how BAD it’s getting out here.
We’re turning over places to move that have high salary vs low rent rates and suit skills that, despite being very physically and at-times mentally broken individuals we can at least pick up for support.
Basically, we’re trying to fucking run.
Our collective skills are writing, video editing, graphic design, and art. She also has a bunch of managerial experience but is tired of getting pitched into glorified “management” positions that are a dollar an hour more to do all the heavy labor AND manage, and she can’t do the heavy labor anymore with her neck issue. So she’d literally need somewhere that lets her truly back end manage which she’s good at, but very few places around here let her actually do. But that said we’re tilting more towards our creative stuff.
Which lends me to my other point: unfortunately I have three primary ex-media-hubs.
1. Houston/Austin -- I have a psycho ex that wants to kill me, and it’s texas, fuck no
2. Atlanta -- literally passing bills just as bad as Alabama, and the point is to get OUT of the south.
3. Salt Lake City -- actually has some affordable rent, actually has some decent give on our possible proficiencies but I also fear us hitting a dead end faster out there than even here. I KNOW I could get back into media if I dropped into Utah and could get plugged in a job with a fingersnap as long as I stayed in like, the greater Salt Lake City area, but it’s mostly college housing that’s affordable and a lucky fluke here or there. But I mean the other downside is despite as many folks as I DO live in Utah I’d be slinging myself into a conservative area out THERE, just... less... I dunno... podunk south so and more “LDS is the way of life ‘round there.” And I guess I could tolerate that more I’d just. Prefer not to. But this is past what we prefer anymore.
TLDR, I’m still looking for ideas that have a decent set of planning, because said partner is NOT the kind to survive just burning it all and rebooting from homelessness like I have in the past (which is part of why I’m physically tattered to bits) and I have to think about more than myself now, which is foreign to me.
