Hi, i'm sorry this is so out of the blue but would you mind sharing sadomasochistic literature recs pls? I love your other rec lists<33
yo not out of the blue at all. i realise i post a lot of content related to sm.
for fiction: besides the obvious bataille, you should look into colette peignot's collected writings under the name laure.
for some rewritten material on her there's kathy acker's my mother demonology. but everything by kathy acker relates to the subject: blood and guts in highschool, empire of the senseless.
(sidenote from an interview w kris kraus on her biography: According to Eleanor Antin, Kathy worked at a massage parlor in Solana Beach for a while, and she did not give massages. [...] She was also, at the same time, tutoring Latin. / If she didn’t give massages, what did she do? / Well, hand jobs, probably.)
another classic but story of o written by pauline réage plus its beautiful illustrations by leonor fini. it's actually said her fantastical owl masks inspired the character of o + she was really close to andré pieyre de mandiargues, whose one story la marge was adapted by walerian borowczky in immoral tales. then there's sacher masoch's venus in furs. you've probably already heard of anais nin's delta of venus.
i specifically highly rec mary gaitskill. bad behaviour is a great short story collection - one of the stories specifically inspired the film secretary (2002). her essay, the trouble with following the rules, on rape culture and agency published in harper's bazaar (later repub in somebody with a little hammer) is one rare occurrence of nuance and grace accorded to women who've had sexual experiences that are difficult to categorise. it gives a rundown of the ways she personally relates to feminist scholars on the subject too.
there's problems by jade sharma. for a more modern story of the eye, try ryu murakami's ecstasy.
for non-fiction (disclaimer that i mostly haven't read these but they are on my list):
gilles deleuze, masochism: coldness and cruelty ; avgi saketopoulou, sexuality beyond consent ; virginie despentes, king kong theory
if you're similarly interested in boundary-pushing experiences, the limits of the body, attraction to the horrific (i getchu) this is moreso sociology, aesthetics, psychoanalysis focused:
elaine scarry, the body in pain ; anne dufourmantelle, in praise of risk ; sylvère lotringer, overexposed: perverting perversions ; umberto eco, on ugliness
other media: the podcast drunk church, the director catherine breillat.
hope this is of help & if you read anything tell me how it went. i'm always looking for more stuff on the subject too.

Leonor Fini (Argentine painter) 1907 - 1996

"Putting on costumes, getting dressed up is an act of creativity ... It’s about inventing one’s self, being transformed, being so apparently changing and multiple that one can feel it from within one’s self." - LEONOR FINI
L’Essayage IV, painted in 1985, is an iconic and provocative statement by Leonor Fini; an act in which she expresses her highly original vision, powerful self-expression and fierce independence. Her protagonist defies normative roles — both of traditional society and of the artistic movements Fini is associated with.
Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was an Argentinian surrealist painter, designer, illustrator, and author, known for her depictions of powerful women.
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, she was raised in Trieste, Italy, her mother's home city. Custody battles often involved Fini and her mother in sudden flights and disguises. She moved to Milan at the age of 17, and then to Paris, in either 1931 or 1932. There, she became acquainted with Carlo Carrà and Giorgio de Chirico, who inspired much of her work. She also came to know Paul Éluard, Max Ernst, Georges Bataille, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Picasso, André Pieyre de Mandiargues, and Salvador Dalí.

Infosurr #156 is now available
"The 12 pages of Issue 155 will help you rediscover the strange Juliette Roche in Besançon, the work of Man Ray in Avignon or Philip Lamantia’s narcotics-inspired poetry. Tribute is paid, with delay, to Nanos Valatoris, one of the main Greek surrealist poets. The review are always in the spotlight with the annual issue of The Oystercatcher or the documents and unpublished correspondences unearthed by L'Étoile de mer edited by the friends of Robert Desnos. This rich panorama will be completed with Kathleen Fox's "seductive narrative in creations" and Agustin Cardenas, "the surrealist sculptor par excellence" said André Pieyre de Mandiargues. We start to report on the huge travelling exhibition of Toyen. It deserved the cover of the issue with an amazing photo of her and Jindrich Styrsky. "In the next issues, we will deal with Maurice Henry’s Rêves et Culbutes, Mary Reynolds’s neglected career and the one-issue review Vendredi. The « Figures of or around surrealism » section will mention Petr Kral, Arturo Schwarz, Alain Joubert, Jean Terrossian, Jacques Calonne and Frédérick Tristan. Exhibitions start again with the surrealist bestiary of Max Ernst in Germany and the course around surrealism of Anne-Marie Castelain. New academic approaches to surrealism (Abigail Susik) will be presented, as well as poetic approaches still in progress (Guy Cabanel, Jean-Claude Silbermann). Reviews will always be present in Infosurr like the first issue of Philosophical Egg. So there are always (re)discoveries to be made, here and elsewhere."

Leonor Fini
“In a sense my paintings have always been my autobiography. A revealing autobiography because my paintings do not interpret either my conscious development or my experiences; rather, they ‘unmask’ a being inside of me (often with strange projections into the future).” — Leonor Fini
Leonor Fini (1907–1996) was an Italo-Argentinian surrealist painter. Her works are inspired by her time spent living in both Milan and Paris where she took influence from both renaissance and surrealist eras and movements, although she was never a member of any group or movement, preferring to stake her own claim on modernism with a vision that owes more to the farthest shores of her imagination than to any affiliation with art trends, schools or movements.
In 1931 she moved to Paris to forge a career as an artist and formed friendships with Henri Cartier-Bresson, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst and the writer André Pieyre de Mandiargues. She had her first one person show in Paris when she was twenty-five at a gallery directed by Christian Dior. Her work caught on fast and was included in the pivotal and groundbreaking ‘Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism’ exhibition at the MOMA in 1936 while at the same time she had her first New York exhibition at the avant-garde Julien Levy Galley.
Fini was not only one of the few female artists of the period who was neither the companion nor the muse of another artist, but probably the only one who always claimed the strictest equality, as evidenced by her depiction of women. The painting ‘Autoportrait au scorpion’ is an iconic personal statement and an exploration of her own artistic power.
