On December 27, 2018, South Vancouver lost a loyal friend, with the passing of historian Ken MacLeod, author of The Story of South Vancouver and John Oliver High School. The 74-year-old retired teacher lived his final years in Courtenay, but his heart remained in the Sunset neighbourhood of his childhood.

He attended MacKenzie Elementary and was an enthusiastic Boy Scout. As a student at John Oliver Secondary (J.O.), he joined every club and team that would have him, and founded the Mountain Dew Boys contingent of the Pep Club. He caught the acting bug in the school’s drama productions. He played football and broke his nose in a game of cricket.

His six years at J.O. (yes, they used to do grade 7 there) coincided with the adolescent pinnacle of the post-war baby boom, when John Oliver was the largest high school in Canada. The school frequently dominated in sports, music and scholastics, and Ken was sad to leave the frenetic place when he graduated in 1962.

He got his BA in education at University of British Columbia, and later an MA from the University of Victoria. Ken taught high school in Chase, Salmon Arm, Langley and Abbotsford. He coached over 60 teams, with an emphasis on his beloved sport of basketball.

In 1973, journalist Barry Broadfoot published Ten Lost Years, based on interviews with Canadians about the Great Depression. The oral history book fascinated Ken and he launched himself into the past. He traced his family roots back to 14th century Scottish king Robert the Bruce. He grabbed a tape recorder and began interviewing West Coast fisherman for a book that, although not completed, has resulted in a treasure trove of memories being donated to the Cumberland Museum and Archives. He immersed himself in Canadian armed forces history and was the military subject adviser to the Encyclopedia of British Columbia (Harbour Publishing, 2000). He guided 29 military and veterans tours to Europe, revisiting the Canadian battlefields, cemeteries, and commemorative sites. When he retired to Courtenay, he produced 19 musical shows, including an annual Remembrance Day review to honour veterans. Ken was a true ally of the Canadian soldier and one of the first citizens to receive a Veterans Affairs Canada Commendation. He was also awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and made an honorary Seaforth Highlander.

But of all the forays that Ken made back in time, his biggest push was reserved for his old stomping grounds of South Vancouver. In 1999, Ken formed the John Oliver Historical Society with the intention of quickly writing a small book about the school. The historian soon discovered that J.O.’s background was vast and rich, and so intermeshed with the surrounding community that he felt forced to combine the two topics into a massive 800-page tome entitled The Story of South Vancouver and John Oliver High School. The project was a 12-year labour of love. The author filled a room in his home with interview tapes, photos and memorabilia. He travelled all over B.C. to collect memories. A story about kids pole vaulting over creeks on the South Slope led to the story of sprinter Barbara Howard (J.O. senior matric, 1940) becoming the first black female athlete to represent Canada internationally. She competed at the 1938 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Sydney, Australia. That recollection led to memories of the Horticultural Hall, a barn-like structure that served as J.O.’s only gym up until the construction of a proper one in 1940. The rustic hall with its pot-bellied stove, continued as a back-up gym into the 1950s, and Ken chased down the holders of those memories, too.

The research snowballed. It is a miracle that Ken was able to publish the book in time to watch J.O. grad of ‘47 and billionaire Jimmy Pattison play his trumpet accompanied by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robinson on tuba at the school’s centennial celebration in 2012.

Ken’s book is the only comprehensive history of South Vancouver on the shelves at the Vancouver Public Library. It is a fine legacy for an outstanding individual.

Even as Ken battled with lung cancer, he continued to arrange for his work to carry forward. An easy-to-search PDF of his book will soon appear on J.O.’s website. Other J.O. grads will continue his popular alumni e-letters. And Ken’s sister, Edie Kernighan (Grad of ’67) will work with her fellow classmates Alicia Hagerman and Nancy Nagel to help maintain the school’s archive. Their goal is to find a space to display John Oliver and South Van’s history. One possible venue is the school’s Unit Two Annex, an attractive 1926 Class-B heritage structure known as The Barn.

The rural reference is apt, because as Ken explains in his book, Vancouverites used to refer to the South Van crowd as “stump jumpers,” but the jabs stopped abruptly when the “farmers” living way out on Cemetery Road (Fraser Street) built John Oliver, which quickly became an educational powerhouse.

A service for Ken will be held at Courtenay Fellowship Baptist Church on January 12th at 1:00 pm.

Америка и Фашизм — Часть 32: Превращение Города Дрездена в Пепел

Зверские резни немецких нацистов и японских фашистов — чудовищный ужас. А западные «демократичные» державы несут огромную долю ответственности за бесчеловечные преступления Гитлера и союзников.

В 1930-х годах США и Великобритания поддерживали мировой фашизм — усердно способствовали нацистской Германии в милитаризации страны, финансировании, дипломатии... Даже после того, когда Германия объявила войну США американские корпорации и банки — с активным всесторонним пособничеством Правительства США - продолжали вести непрекращающийся бизнес с нацистской Германией и производить в большую пользу Гитлера военную технику.

В то же время США и Англия воевали против фашистов. Совсем не из-за каких-то демократичных целей, а за счет межимпериалистического соперничества. С точки зрения «демократичных» держав им нельзя было отказаться от мирового господства, дать волю чужим капиталистам-фашистам, потерять ценные источники сверхприбылей.

А чудовищные преступления против человечества — не только явление нацистов-фашистов. История капитализма и империализма изобилует жестокостями: рабством, колониализмом, войной за войной... «Коалиции» во главе с США убивали где-то 2-3 миллиона человек в Корее в 1950-х годах и примерно такое количество в Индокитае в 1960-70-х годах, затем убивали более миллиона жертв в Ираке.

Во Второй мировой войне «демократичные» союзники тоже совершили убийственные преступления. Одно из них — превращение восточного немецкого города Дрездена в пепел.

“В ночь на 13-14 феврале 1945г более тысячи бомбардировщиков военно-воздушных сил Великобритании и США атаковали Дрезден. Последствия были катастрофическими. Испепелили исторический центр города и 25 000 — 40 000 человек погибли. Дрезден не имел ни важного экономического, ни важного военного значения. Стал очевидно, что главная цель — разрушить город и убивать как можно больше...

Не бомбили единственный военный объект - аэродром Люфтваффе (немецких военно-воздушных сил) - в городе. Не нацеливались на якобы критически важный вокзал... Приказали летчикам и бомбардирам бомбить центральную часть города, ...но не атаковали заводы в окрестностях Дрездена» (Jacques Pauwels, “Why was Dresden destroyed,” Global Research 9.02.2010)

Город был переполнен. Массовая бомбежка произошла в заключительной фазе войны. Советские войска уже продвигались на всех фронтах и тогда находились всего лишь 200 км от Дрездена.

То, что случилось в Дрездене — не только разрушение города, но и преднамеренное массовое убийство гражданского населения.

“Демократичный» Запад попытался возложить вину на Советский Союз. В пресс-конференции 16 февраля 1945г «объяснили», что, мол, «цель — позволить русским продолжать успешные военные операции». Нет никаких сведений о том, что Советские Вооруженные силы попросили такую «помощь». У СССР были свои Военно-воздушные силы, которые умышленно не бомбили чисто гражданские объекты, мирное население. Такое зверское действие было «специальностью» — не только в Дрездене! - «сверх-демократичных», то есть, самых «гуманных, цивилизованных, культурных, свободолюбивых, превосходных» властителей и генералов США и Великобритании.

Абсурд, утверждение о том, что США и Великобритания стремились способствовать дальнейшим успехам Советских Вооруженных сил. Все было как раз наоборот. Основная причина открытия Второго фронта — летом 1944г, то есть, поздно — ограничивать дальнейшее продвижение советских войск в Германию, в Европу в целом.

На самом деле кровавая бомбежка Дрездена была «посланием» к СССР, громким предупреждением Советской власти. По плану преднамеренное уничтожение Дрездена должно было провести во время Ялтинской конференции с участием Сталина, Рузвельта и Черчилля, где обсуждали будущее Европы. Из-за непогоды атака на Дрезден была отложена. Но замысел остался.

Директива экипажам Королевских военно-воздушных сил констатировала, что цель бомбардировки -«показать русским, когда они подойдут к Дрездену, то, что в наших силах» (what our Bomber Command is capable of doing). (Pauwels, там же). Член экипажа отметил, что цель бомбежки — «давать СССР понять, что они должны вести себя «хорошо», иначе то, что произошло в Дрездене может и произ��йти в русских городах» (Barry Broadfoot, “Six War Years 1939-1945”, 1976).

“Черчилль хотел научить Советский Союз, что бомбежка Дрездена может повториться в СССР. Применение террора против нацистов — способ отпугивания коммунистов» (Alexander McKee, “Dresden 1945. The Devil's Tinderbox”, 1982).

“Превращение Дрездена в пепел не имело ничего общего с борьбой против нацистской Германии. Основная цель — готовить к новому столкновению, где СССР станет врагом. В аде Дрездена, Хиросимы и Нагасаки (городов-мишени атомной бомбардировки США в 1945г) родилась новая холодная война» (Pauwels, там же).

Boyd scores as Killie win again against Hamilton

Kilmarnock beat Hamilton Academical in the final Scottish Premiership match before the league’s split to move to within four points of fourth place.

Darian MacKinnon fired against the Killie crossbar and Accies’ Rakish Bingham and Lewis Ferguson were denied by keeper Leo Fasan in the first half.

Kirk Broadfoot headed home from close range to put Kilmarnock ahead but David Templeton’s free-kick levelled matters.

Kris Boyd tapped in Aaron Simpson’s delivery and this time Killie held on.

Steve Clarke’s side, who win for a sixth successive game and extend their unbeaten league run to 11, move closer to Hibernian going into the final five rounds of fixtures against their fellow top-six sides.

Hamilton, in ninth, remain four points clear of the league’s bottom two and ahead of Dundee on goal difference.

This had the feel of a battle in the early stages, with both sides determined to exercise their right to dominate the play.

Boyd fired an early effort well wide and very little happened until the end of the half, when Hamilton sprung into life.

On a counter attack Ali Crawford played the ball to MacKinnon, who fired a piledriver of a shot from 20 yards toward goal which clipped the top of the crossbar.

Moments later Bingham fired in another shot which Fasan, who had replaced the injured Jamie MacDonald in the starting line-up, did well to tip over.

And Accies would finish the half with all the momentum as Fasan again had to save well, this time Ferguson with an effort denied.

It was a somewhat surprising end to a half that Kilmarnock had dominated in terms of possession. The problem for Clarke’s side was they had created nothing significant in terms of chances.

They would start the second half with renewed purpose. Jordan Jones ghosted into the box but his shot flew high over the bar.

And then the breakthrough. A free-kick from Dicker into the box and there was Broadfoot, who guided a header into the corner of the net. The massed ranks of Kilmarnock fans behind the goal erupted in delight.

But Hamilton would hit back soon after. Crawford was felled on the edge of the box by Dicker. Up stepped Templeton, who had just come off the bench, and the former Rangers forward curled into the net.

However, Kilmarnock were far from finished. A flowing move saw Simpson cut the ball back for top scorer Boyd, who finished in customary fashion.

In the end the win could have been even more emphatic as Gary Woods saved well from Eamonn Brophy.

ФСБ - Федеральная служба «безопасности» России - вслед за позорным, предавшим страну предшественником КГБ, мерзко выполняет приказы секретного, кровавого хозяина (boss) - американского ЦРУ (CIA).
