‘Arthur Shearly Cripps and the greatness of Zimbabwe’
In her final report from the Link visit to Zimbabwe, Wendy S Robins writes...
We were late arriving (as usual) but it was good to be greeted by our Dean, Andrew Nunn, who had arrived the day before to join us for the rest of the trip and to meet again Fr Fungayi who had been on the Masvingo trip to the Diocese of Southwark last year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A welcome dinner greeted us once again.  It was wonderful to see the newly painted hall at the Cathedral and to meet the priests and their wives and the Diocesan office workers there.   A power cut somewhat delayed dinner and so after the formal greetings in which both Bishop Christopher and the Dean spoke they were asked to talk about the Church of England.  They did a hilarious and informative session which at times was really rather like stand up comedy.  It was brilliant.   After a good night’s sleep in the Urban Lifestyles Lodge (which the Dean reviewed very favourably on Trip Advisor!) we went off to see the Great Zimbabwe Ruins.   This is the cradle of Zimbabwe and is an amazing feat of engineering built between the 11th and 15th centuries - there is stonework without mortar that has survived for centuries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was utterly stunning.
Tumblr media
The afternoon began a series of visits that confirmed to us the difficulties of the rural areas in Zimbabwe. We visited a lot of rural projects whilst we were there and at each of them we could see the effects of the lack of water and the state of the economy.   We saw The Transfiguration Training Centre which we have supported through the Bishop of Southwark’s Lent Call this year.   Last year when we visited there were quite a number of piglets and pigs, lots of chickens and the crops were sprouting away merrily.  This year there was so much less.   The economy and the effects of global warming have taken their toll.  The feed is too expensive to buy and so the numbers of pigs and chickens have been reduced and the borehole has failed.  The water table is too low and the pieces of the borehole are not now functioning properly and so the only crops that are growing are those around the borehole itself where some water remains available. It is, frankly, heartbreaking because there are no students and it is hard to see when there will be more. This is especially sad as they have now built proper structures for the students to live in rather than the wooden huts which had been there for them before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were, however, a great many goats with which I was much taken.   They were all in a pen when we arrived although they were let out later.  In the pen they just sort of stood and looked very thoughtfully at us as if they could solve the problems faced by the country. I rather wanted to bring one home.
Tumblr media
The next day we visited four rural schools and churches in the rural area of Shurugwi.  I found this all rather confusing as the rural part of Shurugwi is in the Diocese of Masvingo and the more urban part in the Diocese of Central Zimbabwe.  I am afraid that I still don’t have the geography sorted despite Bishop Godfrey and Friar Fungayi’s best efforts.
Tumblr media
The schools and church members all gave us wonderful welcomes and we saw St Boniface, St Mary, St Michael and St Francis Schools and their nearby churches.  There is a huge (literally) building project at St Francis’ where they hope to finish a church that will hold over 400.   But, like so many things the church has had to stop work because of the lack of funds to complete it.   We hope they will be able to continue it soon.
Tumblr media
Each of the schools told us of the difficulties that they have with water and how this hinders the work that they can do with the children - this is a special worry as they are all involved in feeding projects in order to try to help ensure that the children get at least one decent meal a day.  We were shown pumps that pumped very little water now, simply because the water table was so low.  It further convinced us that becoming an eco-Diocese was absolutely the way for Southwark Diocese to proceed and that we all need to take the threat of global warning very seriously.  In Zimbabwe global warming is not only threatening, it is present.
Tumblr media
Our last day in Masvingo was spent at the Shearly Cripps Festival and there we met up with the two Johns as well as the three Bishops from our Link Dioceses that we had seen.   Sadly Bishop Erick of Manicaland was unable to be at the Festival as his wife, Eunice, is unwell (we are pleased that she is now recovering). We were also pleased to meet there the new Bishop of Harare, Bishop Farai.  The Dean and I had been with him in the joint Zimbabwe/Southwark/Rochester Diocesan visit to St George’s Jerusalem and the Bishop and I had met him when we were last in Harare, as he had been the Dean of the Cathedral.  It was great to see him again and to congratulate him on his recent appointment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Dean and the two Johns both took part in the procession and were on the altar space for the service and Bishop Christopher helped to lead the service.   It was a wonderfully joyous occasion and the music was – as ever – wonderful, but once again we could see the effects of the economic situation as the numbers at the Festival were much smaller than when the Bishop and I had last attended. There was around half the number there, we reckon, as people could not get fuel and could not afford the price of the bus.   This, along with the Bernard Mizeki Festival is so important to the people of the Anglican Church in Zimbabwe that it seems a real shame that so many fewer attended. At the end of the Eucharist, Bishop Christopher and the Dean spoke to those assembled and greeted them from Southwark and the two Johns and I were introduced too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The traditional choir competition followed with choirs from around the country.  But, once again, there were fewer choirs than usual.   The Choir from the Daramombe School swept the board (although most people got some sort of prize) and sang really well. Bishop Christopher, Bishop Godfrey and the Dean gave out the prizes.
Tumblr media
Then regretfully it was time for us to leave and head for Harare before getting the plane home the next day.   That evening we were able to meet briefly with Bishop Chad, the former Bishop of Harare, who retired last year.   It was good to see him and to hear how he is getting on. Next morning Bishop Christopher and the Dean went to, and were warmly greeted at, Harare Cathedral.  Once again they brought greetings from Southwark Diocese to all that were there.  And so another visit ended.
As we returned home I know that we all bring fond memories of the people and the places.  But more than that we bring the sense of the strong and deep faith of the people of Zimbabwe, where about 85% are thought to be Christian (though not all Anglican!) and where God feels very present even in this dire situation.
Pray for them, for the nation and for their continued hope.  Pray that we may play our part in supporting them and in seeking to combat the effects of global warming and that we may learn from them.  Most especially pray for the economy there.
We look forward to greeting the Bishops and their wives when they come for the Lambeth Conference next year.   There will be opportunities to meet them and worship with them.   Taking these opportunities will undoubtedly be very rewarding so look out for what we are doing.
Pray too, as the children at the Cathedral Primary School pray everyday:
God Bless Zimbabwe; Guard her children; Guide her leaders And give her peace.
Amen

How to buy a house for less than half its price
I was shocked when I read a story the other day that more than 2 000 Zimbabweans had just lost their houses after they were auctioned because banks wanted to recover $700 million that they owed.
It pained me because I know that there is a simple formula that most people can use to save their houses and at very little extra cost.
I discovered this formula way back in 1984 when a friend of mine bought a brand new Renault 18.
I had bought a house a year earlier, but started wondering why my friend was given three years to pay off the car, which was more expensive than my house, when I was given 25 years to settle my mortgage.
Of course one of the reasons that made me rethink was that when you are in town, one with a car is more visible than one with a house even if the house is more expensive than a car because you do not move around with your house.
I discovered then that with the repayments I was making I would have paid more than three and a half times the loan I had borrowed from the bank.
I also discovered that it was quite simple to pay much less than that and at the same time save my property from repossession in case I defaulted on my repayments say because of loss of employment or falling ill.
In fact, I discovered that it so easy to pay half the amount I was expected to pay after 25 years.
I applied this simple formula and paid off my house in 7 years. In the meantime I had moved cities and bought a flat. I paid it off in two years. In fact I paid off the flat before my first house.
I therefore decided to write a small guide on how to do this in 1994.
The booklet was entitled: How to buy a house for less than half its price.
I exhibited it at the Bulawayo Book Fair and then at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair but it got a lot of attention at the Bulawayo Book Fair where a lecturer in Investment Finance at the National University of Science and Technology decided to make it recommended reading for his students.
In my opinion, this was more for the simple concept rather than anything else.
For the benefit of Insider readers, I have, therefore, decided to give away five of these books every week. All you are required to do is answer one simple question.
I know the booklet is now too old but I believe it will kick-start you into thinking how easily you can save on your bond.
I will also be serialising the booklet on this column every Sunday from next week for the benefit of those not lucky enough to win the hard copy.
It is at the end of each insert that I will ask a question which if you answer correctly you can win a copy.
See you next week.
