Let's talk about Bones 9x14

Now that I have a bit more of a presence on Bones Tumblr, I've been meaning to share my opinions of this show and some of the social issues it addresses. You don't have to read the whole thing, but it means a lot to me and who I am as a person that I at least put this out there.

I've been thinking about The Master in the Slop (9x14) for a bit and the part where Brennan is bothered by Cam being chosen for the Outstanding Women in Science Award doesn't sit right with me. While I understand that Brennan's character is one that's highly competitive, I think the way Cam handles the situation leads to a whole new conversation about woc in science that we should be having.

Like not only does Brennan not just let Cam have the award, but Cam then considers giving the award back. And even though in the end she's still awarded, it's with 11 other women (including Brennan), which then decreases the significance of her award. I'm sure the writers meant to make it a heartfelt scene of a woman in solidarity with her female friend and coworker, but to me, it just feels like another instance in which a woman/person of color has to give up something they've worked for their whole life for a white person who's feelings are hurt because they can't have everything they want.

I know it's Fox and that given the time, they're probably doing more than the best they can. Also, I'm aware that Brennan's social skills do play a part in how this situation panned out and I'm sure that had she known more/known better, she wouldn't have acted that way, but I don't think we can just blame the situation on her lack of social understanding. Maybe I'm being harsh on Brennan and overly critical of the show in general, but as a woman of color going into science, I think it's important that we address situations like these with our current standards instead of just saying "oh that's just how it was at the time." Bones is one of my favorite shows of all times and it's only because I love this show so much that I bring these things up. That being said, I'd love to hear other people's opinions and thoughts and maybe we can have a conversation about issues and scenarios like these.

I have lots of feelings about Burzek in 9x14-9x15 right now. Such an up and down of emotions in these two episodes. One minute they were so happy because they got full custody of Mak and the next they were at each others’ throats. Maybe, had they been taken off the case as it was so personal, it would have been better for everyone involved and I trust the rest of the unit would have done their best to find Mak in any case.

I get the frustration of a lot of the fandom here for the costant push and pull, but I still appreciate that, no matter what, they’re always there for each other. Sometimes more than others, one of them more than the other at times. And yet...Kim’s speech on the stand was so touching and emotional, she was speaking from the heart and she did not hesitate in naming Adam as their family. Adam was there for her when she was scared, when she thought she was going to lose Mak. And she was there, trying to make him think less of the worst case scenario after the kidnapping. What happened afterwards? Irrational, fueled by fear, by the fact that they shouldn’t have been there at all and people say regrettable things in those cases. I still have some hope for them.

On a different note, I would have loved to see more of the unit supporting them during the legal battle as much as they did during the kidnapping. That was totally a missed opportunity. And, to me, that is also the problem of this character-focused format. Fire? That’s a truly ensemble show, in the real sense of the word. PD? Not so much. (And I’ll stop here because this is a bone to pick at another time, perhaps when the fandom is in better spirits)
