Citroën CX2400 GTi, 1977. The CX was designed by Robert Opron and was originally intended to use a Comrotor 3-rotor Wankel engine. However following the disaster of the GS Birotor the rotary engine was abandoned in favour of Citroën’s existing range of 4-cylinder engines. It was introduced in 1974 in 2.0 and 2.2 litre versions, in 1976 the 2.2 was replaced by a 2.4 litre (actually 2,347cc) and in 1977 when this engine received fuel injection the GTi model was added. The CX was the last car to have been developed while Citroën was an independent company. A combination of the early 70s fuel crisis and the disastrous investment in both Maserati (which Citroën owned for a time) and Comrotor (jointly owned with NSU) drove the company to bankruptcy, it was taken over by Peugeot in 1974.
