MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study?
Response: I became interested in dog's sense of smell several years ago while doing therapy dog demonstrations at the California Science Center in Los Angeles during a special traveling exhibit "Dogs! A Science Tail." (Now at the Orlando Science Center). I did a lot of research on this topic and taught children about it through the Los Angeles Public Library using my Great Pyrenees therapy dogs. Then, COVID broke out and I expanded my research into any work being done to possibly utilize scent dogs for screening and testing for COVID. I found only a few such studies. However, I fortuitously met Heather Junqueira of BioScent, Inc. (in Florida) online and she was beginning to successfully teach her beagles to detect COVID-related odors. She agreed to co-author a peer-reviewed review paper with me. That led to our first paper -

When the COVID pandemic began to wane at the beginning of this year, I felt that it would be the perfect time to do this comprehensive follow-up review to see how far COVID scent dog research had progressed. To our amazement, research efforts had increased by almost tenfold and involved over 400 scientists using over 31,000 samples (including sniffings) from over 30 countries and that 29 peer reviewed papers had been published.
Heather’s inspiration for doing scent dog work came when her father contracted cancer and she wanted to find better diagnostics. She has since been successful in detecting non-small cell lung cancer with her trained beagles as well as COVID.
MedicalResearch.com: Would you tell us a little about the type and/or breeding of the dogs?
Response: In the peer-reviewed studies, the number of different breeds and mixed breeds was 19. Typical training periods dedicated to COVID scent detection were a few weeks. Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Malinois were most commonly used (nearly 100 times). These breeds were chosen because they have been used extensively in scent detection work for several purposes. Other breeds, such as Heather’s beagles, have been used quite successfully as well. No obvious preference based on performance has been noted by breed, age, gender, age or even previous training for scent work. Interestingly, most of the dogs were not specifically bred to do COVID detection. In fact, previously untrained dogs have the advantage that they are not as prone to indicating on scents other than the COVID-19 associated scent. Heather is one of the few scientists who actually breeds her dogs to be single purpose scent dogs (i.e., for COVID or other diseases).

1) Our review has shown that it safe to utilize scent dogs to directly screen and test individuals who may be infected with the COVID-19.
2) The accuracy of the trained scent dog method is comparable to or in some cases superior to the real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test and the antigen (RAG) test.
3) Trained scent dogs can be effectively used to provide quick (seconds to minutes), non-intrusive, and accurate results in public settings and thus reduce the spread of COVID.

- Medical scent dogs deserve their place as a serious diagnostic methodology that could be particularly useful during pandemics, potentially as part of rapid health screenings in public spaces. We are confident that scent dogs will be useful in detecting a wide variety of diseases in the future.

- More trained dogs will be needed for wide-spread, large-scale scent dog screening and testing. The training and field use of scent dogs may benefit from the recruitment of dog owners who are already involved in recreational scent work under the auspices of the American Kennel Club and other organizations worldwide.
- Is the use of scent dogs cost effective? Much of the research in this review was in fact motivated by the need for rapid, inexpensive, and lower technological testing in developing nations. More research into the economics is needed.
- Perhaps the greatest challenge to the use of medical scent dogs is the implementation of wide-spread, large-scale programs, which will require funding and development of infrastructure that is responsible for certification, protocol standards, and deployments. This may be more of a challenge in the U.S. for a variety of bureaucratic reasons. Other nations face a variety of obstacles, but the large number of scent dogs already used in practical applications (seen in our paper’s References and Tables) suggests that their governments are quite supportive of the common use of medical scent dogs and may not place as many governmental barriers.

TURISIAN.com - Mulai besok, 30 Agustus 2022 calon penumpang KA (Kereta Api) jarak jauh yang akan melakukan perjalanan dari beberapa stasiun Daop 1 Jakarta harus melewati beberapa syarat.
Kebijakan tersebut akan berlaku keberangkatan dari Stasiun Gambir, Pasarsenen, Jakartakota, Bekasi, Cikarang, Karawang, dan Cikampek.
Termasuk, bagi yang berusia 18 tahun ke atas wajib telah melakukan vaksinasi ketiga (booster).
Perubahan dalam aturan terbaru ini, kalau sebelumnya pelanggan yang belum vaksin booster masih diperbolehkan dengan melengkapi hasil negatif RT-PCR.
“Namun mulai 30 Agustus 2022 hal tersebut tidak berlaku lagi," kata Kepala Humas KAI Daop 1 Jakarta Eva Chairunisa di Jakarta, Senin 29 Agustus 2022.

Eva mengatakan, aturan baru tersebut menyesuaikan dengan terbitnya SE Kementerian Perhubungan Nomor 84 Tahun 2022.
Tentang Petunjuk Pelaksanaan Perjalanan Orang Dalam Negeri dengan Transportasi Perkeretaapian pada Masa Pandemi Covid-19.
Daop 1 Jakarta mengimbau kepada calon penumpang KA. Khususnya, yang berangkat pada tanggal 30 Agustus 2022 dan seterusnya.
Agar segera melakukan vaksin booster ataupun vaksin kedua bagi pelanggan usia 6-17 tahun.
Menurut dia, mulai 30 Agustus 2022, pelanggan yang tidak dapat menunjukkan bukti vaksinasi tersebut tidak boleh naik KA.

Pengembalian Bea Tiket 100 Persen
Untuk masa transisi sosialisasi aturan baru ini, pelanggan yang sudah membeli tiket keberangkatan 30 Agustus - 12 September dapat membatalkan. Pihak PT KAI akan mengembaikan bea 100 persen.
Kebijakan tersebut berlaku bagi calon penumpang yang tidak dapat menunjukkan persyaratan vaksinasi karena masa transisi aturan.
"Pembatalan paling lambat H+7 tanggal keberangkatan KA ke loket stasiun atau Contact Center KAI melalui WhatsApp 08111-2111-121," ujarnya.

Persyaratan Lengkap Perjalanan KAJJ
Berikut persyaratan lengkap perjalanan menggunakan KAJJ (Kereta Api Jarak Jauh) dan Lokal yang berlaku mulai 30 Agustus 2022:
Syarat Naik KA Jarak Jauh
Usia 18 tahun ke atas:
a) Wajib vaksin ketiga (booster)
b) WNA yang berasal dari perjalanan luar negeri, wajib vaksin kedua
b) Tidak/belum divaksin dengan alasan medis wajib menunjukkan surat keterangan dokter dari rumah sakit pemerintah
Usia 6-17 tahun:
a) Wajib vaksin kedua
b) Berasal dari perjalanan luar negeri, tidak wajib vaksin
c) Tidak/belum divaksin dengan alasan medis wajib menunjukkan surat keterangan dokter dari rumah sakit pemerintah
Pelanggan dengan usia 6 tahun ke bawah tidak wajib vaksin dan tidak wajib menunjukkan hasil negatif Rapid Tes Antigen atau RT-PCR. Namun wajib dengan pendamping yang memenuhi persyaratan perjalanan.

Sedangkan syarat Naik KA Lokal dan Aglomerasi:
a) Vaksin minimal dosis pertama
b) Tidak diwajibkan untuk menunjukkan surat keterangan hasil negatif Rapid Test Antigen atau RT-PCR
c) Tidak/belum divaksin dengan alasan medis wajib menunjukkan surat keterangan dokter dari rumah sakit pemerintah
d) Pelanggan dengan usia di bawah 6 tahun tidak wajib vaksin namun wajib dengan pendamping yang memenuhi persyaratan perjalanan

Rules for international travelers as of February 26, 2022
All international travelers to the United Arab Emirates are subject to the following regulations at the airport of departure.
● Anyone who has received a COVID-19 immunization must provide a vaccination card with a QR code. You are not obliged to provide a COVID-19 RT-PCR test result that is negative at the airport of departure.
● Those who did not receive the COVID-19 vaccination had a positive RT-PCR test result within 48 hours of their arrival that was validly negative, or their COVID-19 test result had been issued within 30 days. If they are already infected with the virus, they can offer one of their recovery certificates with a QR code before departure.
Things to carry while traveling to UAE

Real-life evaluation of a rapid antigen test (DPP SARS-CoV-2 Antigen) for COVID-19 diagnosis of primary healthcare patients, in the context of the Omicron-dominant wave in Brazil
Preliminary report; Rapid antigen tests play an important role in the monitoring and mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it provides an easy, fast and efficient diagnosis with minimum infrastructure requirements. However, as new variants of concern continue to emerge, mutations in the virus genome may impair the recognition of the mutated antigen by the tests. Therefore, it is essential to re-assess the test's sensitivity as the virus mutation profile undergoes significant changes. Here, we prospectively accessed the performance of the DPP SARS-CoV-2 Antigen test in the context of an omicron-dominant real-life setting. We evaluated 347 unselected individuals (all-comers) from a public testing center in Brazil, performing the rapid antigen test diagnosis at point-of-care with fresh samples. The combinatory result from two distinct RT-qPCR methods was employed as reference and 13 samples with discordant PCR results were excluded. The assessment of the rapid test in 67 PCR-positive and 265 negative samples revealed an overall sensitivity of 80.5%, specificity of 99.2% and positive/negative predictive values higher than 95%. However, we observed that the sensitivity was dependent on the viral load (sensitivity in Ct31 = 47.4%). Furthermore, we were able to confirm that the positive samples evaluated in the study were Omicron (BA.1/BA.1.1) by whole-genome sequencing (n=40) and multiplex RT-qPCR (n=17). DOH detects first case of monkeypox in Phl
The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the Philippines.
In a press briefing, DOH deputy spokesperson Usec. Beverly Ho said the first case is a 31-year-old Filipino national who arrived from abroad on 19 July.
Ho added that the case was confirmed to be a carrier of monkeypox via RT-PCR on 28 July.

The patient is in strict isolation, she added.
Despite having recovered, the patient remains in strict isolation as well as the 10 people who were identified by DoH as close contacts.
Three of them are from the patient’s household.
“The case has been discharged well and is undergoing strict isolation and monitoring at home,” said Ho.
The Health official said the close contacts are not exhibiting any symptoms as of the present time.
“All have been advised to quarantine and are being monitored by the Department,” she said.
“The DoH assures everyone that our public surveillance systems are able to detect and confirm monkeypox cases,” she stressed.
Ho did not disclose further details about the patient such as one’s gender, age, travel history, flight details, and residence.
Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak.
It has so far affected around 16,000 people in 72 countries, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
“Based on what we know about monkeypox…there is a very clear need to be more careful about who we interact with, particularly sexual, intimate contact,” Ho said.
In a study published in the New England Medical Journal this month, 98 percent of those infected were men who have sex with men and 95 percent of the cases have been transmitted through sexual activity.
Press Secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles said while monkeypox is “not as fatal as Covid-19”, the spread of the virus is of concern to the government.
“First of all, it’s only one case. Number two, as you can see, it doesn’t affect the entire population. Number three, this is not like Covid-19 which can be spread by air easily and can possibly be fatal,” she said.
“His primary concern was to get the information out so that people will be aware, but also to be aware that the systems of the DoH are in place, and that this is not the same Covid-19,” she explained.
