Gwn2verse: The Fanfic Bible Part 2
Tumblr media
I wanna talk about my idea of a Pokemon Alternate Universe, and I thought that maybe it'd be easier to talk about the ton of crap I wanted to talk about if I had a pic to go with it and under the context of a hypothetical Pokemon fangame.
Here's the bulk of my thoughts here.
If you'd rather cut back on the word salad, you can just read below.
The Pokemon Gen2verse is a what-if scenario in the Pokemon Games; what if Pokemon never went beyond Kanto/Johto, but added new characters. Realistically, this probably would've been THE END of Pokemon, or it would've became unsustainable due to a lack of innovation and evolution and would've had to do something fresh and new to keep things interesting for a wider consumer base. A Pokemon Game without abilities, a new region to explore, and a slower stream of new Pokemon being introduced (or none at all) doesn't sound very interesting or capable of lasting as long as it does, but it sounds appealing to me and I think you can explore Kanto/Johto without just retreading new ground.
Perhaps a more realistic idea would be 'what if there was a small splinter group in Gamefreak that kept making "GB/GBC Era Games in tandem with the maineline series".
Moving forward, this thought experiment will continue under the idea that no new Pokemon would've been introduced, to try and convert new characters into Gen 2. There are plenty of artists who can turn Gen 3+ sprites and models into the Gen 2 Style, I'm just not one of them.
If this were a game, we'd call it "Pokemon Stars & Pokemon Hearts".
In this hypothetical game, we'd have 2 new Player Characters; Romeo and Juliet, the STAR-Crossed LOVERS (perhaps Tokubei & Ohatsu in Japanese), but we'll refer to them as 'Player' for convenience. They'd be significantly older than any other Player Characters; 18, at the YOUNGEST, but could past for early-mid 20s. You'd be able to pick your starting town, either Palett Town in Kanto or New Bark Town in Johto, and that would determine the Starter you'd get (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Eevee in Palett and Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile, and Pikachu in New Bark).
As the Player, you are the latest apprentice of Professor Oak or Elm, depending on your starting town. One day, you've officially completed your studies under the professor and they give you your Pokeballs and Pokedex. This is how your adventure starts now that you're a legal Pokemon Trainer! This is purely for my own sake, as an adult who feels Pokemon is neglecting their older audience.
This hypothetical game would be taking place five years after the events of Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal Kango & Johto would've gone through a number of changes. I'd wanna make dedicated pics to them, but;
1. As mentioned before, some Gym Leaders would've left their gyms and new ones would take over, perhaps characters that would've appeared in future games. Same for the Elite Four. Some gyms would have new types, but ultimately, Gym Leaders would start having mixed teams. They'd still usually have a type they specialize in and have more than other types, but since this is a smaller pool of Pokemon, teams would have to start getting creative to be more interesting. A few ideas I'd want for this game;
>Brock would've left his gym. He would've joined the Elite Four. Pewter City would become a hub for Pokemon Trainers with a new Gym Leader encouraging this.
>Misty & Erika would be rivals and would be roaming the region. If you run into them, they'll battle you. If you beat them, they'll be a traveling companion for a little while.
>Some new towns would pop up and the Kanto/Johto map would've expanded some.
>Speaking of; Cinnabar Island would've been restored and called 'New Cinnabar' and Viridian Forest would've been restored. In the Gen 2 Games, these areas were reduced for space. But since this is just emulating the Gen 2 style and not on an actual Gameboy Color, or perhaps some kind of rom hack to be emulated like with the Crystal Clear hack, these areas would be restored. (In fact, there's a lot of mechanics in that Crystal Clear hack I'd want for this game that's not gonna happen, lol).
>A new Pokemon Tower. The dead must rest somewhere.
2. You'd have a couple of rivals. There's a rival that you'd meet in both New Bark Town and Palett Town who would be the Player's childhood friend.
3. The Sevii Islands would be a thing; Agatha would be hanging out on one of the islands and would be an optional Boss Battle.
4. You'd be battling against a newly formed Team Rocket, that would essentially be Rainbow Rocket.

Gen2verse: A Different Kind of Rival
Hey, remember this dumb fanfic idea I had back in, like, June?!
...It's okay, I understand. But here's the bulk of what I said back then.
Tumblr media
The reforestation project of Viridian Forest made a smile grow onto Erika's face. The grass was fresh and growing, the trees were mighty and tall once more. It hurt her when she saw the devastating effects of humans taking more than what nature could replace. All the while, she felt trapped within her gym; her duties as a Gym Leader kept her from doing much of anything. But, through the cooperation of Pokemon and People, Viridian Forest was back to what it was before. In a way, it looked better than it did before; stronger than ever, with more Pokemon than ever roaming the grass and ducking under logs. It was magnificent. It was, genuinely, a marvel of na- "Hey, Erika, look!" Misty's voice suddenly broke Erika out of her self-induced trance. She gasped, nearly tripping over her sandals. "Uh, you okay?" "Y-yes, yes, I'm fine." Erika assured. "My mind was just somewhere else for a moment." Misty giggled, "jeez, Erika, you can't just zone out like that. I could've lead you somewhere dangerous or something." "We're in the middle of the woods, Misty. I doubt you'd lead me somewhere nefarious..." "You don't know that." The Tomboy gave Erika a wink. Her face turned a soft shade of pink; before she could say anything else, however, Misty looked ahead. "Oh, look, there's a clearing! Let's set up camp and have a battle!" "Battle?" Erika giggled a bit, "Misty, I know that we didn't bring our strongest Pokemon, but I hope you remember that Grass beats Water." Misty smirked back at Erika, "hey, you don't get to be a Water-Type Pokemon specialist when you don't know how to handle Grass-Types! Now come on! If you lose, you go on a date with me!" "Very we-wait, excuse me?! I-I don't agree to these conditions! Misty!"
I'm a lot prouder of this pic than the one I did before. Not that I hate it, but I really like how I did this one. It looks more fantastical and dreamlike. I think it helps to build up the fantasy that Pokemon is. I even did some neat stuff with the background Pokemon! Anywho, as I mentioned before; one idea I had to keep the Gyms from getting stale in this hypothetical reality where you just kept going through Kanto-Johto over and over again would be for some Gym Leaders to step down and let some new blood take over or set up gyms elsewhere. Misty and Erika, thus, have left their gyms. I'd imagine this is a process done by the Pokemon League through some selection process and it's possible the two simply volunteered for this.  Misty can take the time to reevaluate her 'all-out Water-Type Pokemon offense' strategy. Time to retrain a new team of Water-Types and to teach this old dog some new tricks. And, naturally, this is after Gen 2, so I had her keep that hairstyle and more-or-less put her in her Let's Go Clothes. She probably wears a swimsuit under those clothes. 📷 Erika, meanwhile, stepped down cause, well, this gives her the chance to do a lot of things. Tend to her flowers, practice her flower arranging skills, train casually, catch up on her sleep since she apparently naps in her gym. Also, her design is mostly her Gen 1 design, you probably saw it if you played Pokemon Colosseum and played through the Gym Castles. The two gals have put away their Gym Leader teams and decided to go on an adventure of their own! Mist left Cerulean with just Horsie and Erika, an Oddish. It was really Misty's idea to decide to go on a Pokemon Adventure!  Erika: Misty, aren't we a little old to be going around as new trainers? Misty: Eh?! What do you mean?! By the time the two of them reached Viridian Forest, they've probably gotten some serious training done and are a bit tougher than your average Bug Catcher. And, hey, wouldn't it be cool to have some former Gym Leaders as a pair of Rivals? Or, better yet; imagine running through a revamped Viridian Forest. It's a new, more complex maze. More Pokemon roam about now. And boom! You turn a corner and still Misty and Erika! You can battle them and they can join you as Traveling Companions! For Double Battles, you can pick one as a partner! Misty can help you fish in ponds and a big lake and Erika can help you pluck berries and heal your Pokemon. Maybe a 'cutscene' can happen where you camp during the night and swap dialogue with Misty or Erika, and maybe depending on how well you do, they'll be a long time companion for your adventures!

Pokemon: Gen2verse
This is a dumb fanfic idea I had for a long time. So sorry that this was is a long post. I'll put a cut, but just know this is okay to read.
Tumblr media
So I don't think I've made this obvious, but Generation Two is my favorite generation of Pokemon. I don't care that it's basically Gen 1 DLC; in fact, that might be why I like it so much, it completes Kanto and expands on it. I don't hate everything past Gen 2 or anything; I actually like a lot of Pokemon in Gen 5, Gen 6 has a lot of nostalgia for me despite its problems, and I've even grown to appreciate elements in Gen 3 and up that I didn't as a kid. But Gen 2 is still my favorite. It's not the best Gen by a longshot, but still my favorite. I think it's the nostalgia talking. And maybe it's still the nostalgia, but it brought a question to my mind: what if Pokemon never expanded its roster of creatures and the games continued to take place in the Kanto/Johto region? Just keep adding more character, expanding on previous areas, maybe swapping out Gym Leaders and E4 and Champion every once in a while. Like Blaine and Pryce retiring so their grandkids, Flannery and Candice to take over! Or Gym Leaders changing types, like Erika using Ghost-Types like in her Beta Design, maybe going through a goth phase, or completely different gym layouts like Misty stepping down for one game, then a new Water-Gym, like Nessa, opening up in the next. Or maybe Brawlie being a rival in one game and his fighting Gym opens up in the next! Obviously, that would be bad, lol, but it was a fun thought experiment. Imagine a Kanto/Johto where all the other Evil Teams weren't operating in future regions, but were crammed here. Team Galactic trying to use the Unown to rewrite reality and trying to build bases in Mt. Moon. Or Team Aqua having an underwater base in the Whirl Islands and Team Magma being responsible for causing Cinnabar Island's volcano to erupt and being inspired by the accident to conquer the world. The Aethe Foundation being a new competitor to Silph Co. A tighter, smaller world for different stories to tell! And, naturally, trying to translate Later Gen characters to Gen 2, which is fairly interesting. I didn't decide to draw Hilda and Calem up there out of the blue! I think Hilda would be a tomboy from Blackthorn City, having left home through the mountain pass and catching her partner Pokemon, a Swinub that evolved into a Piloswine. And I think Calem is a spoiled, rich kid from Cerulean City. His partner Pokemon is a Poliwag who evolved into a Politoed and was able to buy a very expensive King's Rock to evolve him. There's so much more that can be done and can be explored! Oh boy, though, looks like Calem has spotted Hilda! And when one trainer spots enough, they must battle!
