On my first post, I mentioned that I listened to one lovejoy song once…and did not like it. I grew up with indie music so I consider myself to be quite qualified in recommending music.

The Crane Wife (2006) - I cannot begin to tell you how amazing this album is. This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Crane Wife P1, 2, &3 are eternally beautiful. After the Bombs snd Sons & Daughters always give me chills.
The King is Dead (2011) - This is the album I remember the most…this was my favorite album of theirs when I was a kid! My favorite song as a kid was June Hymn. June Hymn and the song Use It by The New Pornographers were my favorites. The New Pornographers aren’t super similar to the type of indie that Lovejoy was, TNP is power pop!

Mignonette (2004) - I only recently started to appreciate this album a lot more! It’s very wicked. It gets spooky towards the end and I love that. It’s similar to the Hazards of Love album by the Decemberists, in that it tells a full story in the course of the album.

Aurin doesn't necessarily have a favorite food (which you'll understand with the rest of this post), but he absolutely adores the little things Malikye makes for him. He's particularly fond of sandwiches that Mal makes using tomatoes from his little garden.

Despite his other substance issues, alcohol is actually something Aurin stays away from! He doesn't like the ways he's felt both while drunk and after he's been hungover before. He feels much less in control of himself when he's drunk opposed to when he's been high or micro dosed LSD.
There's also a part of him that worries about the way he acts while drunk, and things that may happen to him when he's much more impaired or physically unaware. Trauma n' things.

🥯 🥪 🍛 what does your oc's typical breakfast/lunch/dinner look like? do they usually eat breakfast/lunch/dinner?
Aurin typically doesn't really eat much at all unless one of a few conditions is met:
Someone, such as Merriweather, is taking care of him and either helping him cook or is encouraging him to eat
He's under less stress or strain from his work and allows himself time for a break to eat
He's under less emotional stress
When Merriweather took care of Aurin and had him stay with her during Heartworm and the few chapters that followed, he ate more because Merriweather either cooked something or would bring him things and encourage him to eat. Heartworm and the chapters close after it were the height of emotional distress for Aurin after what happened to him, and that's the window of time when his eating disorder got worse.
Before any of his trauma stemming from Alcove or anything there, he still did struggle with eating but to a lesser extent. Usually it would just be because he "didn't feel like he needed to" or he'd become too involved in whatever he was working on and he'd either forget to eat or procrastinate over whether he should eat or not. He's been doing that since he was real young though.
Part of his emotional distress around eating is from his trauma shown in Heartworm, but part of it in general just has to do with still struggling to accept his body as it is. I've made it clear before but I'll say it again, the decade(s) his story is in aren't friendly to trans, genderqueer, or intersex folk, and his trauma surrounding a part of his identity he can't control has driven his eating disorder to become worse.
Both Merriweather and Malikye give Aurin a lot of love though, and Malikye honestly loves playing "housewife" for Aurin and cooking for him, so Aurin does have a support system there. But he doesn't (at least on his own) eat "regularly" to answer the question more directly.
If he's living on his own without Merriweather or Malikye helping him, he might only have a breakfast or lunch maybe two or three times in a week? And whatever he'd have wouldn't be much. He doesn't really even attempt dinner because of his work hours and how much time he puts in at the lab. Gonna throw out his poor excuse of a "sleep schedule" for now.
With Malikye with him, he always has something for breakfast even if it's just a little thing. Mal likes having a lil morning routine with Aurin bringing him breakfasts in bed or surprising him in the kitchen with stuff :] Lunch depends on how Aurin's feeling since his body gets weird if he's in a "normal schedule" of eating, but he'll still always have something.
And going back to what I said at the start, Aurin doesn't really have a favorite food for any time of the day because of everything previously mentioned. He just feels really happy whenever Malikye makes him something or puts in an effort to help him even make something on his own. Aurin's favorite things are whatever Mal makes.

Puppy love: How pet parents cope with costs
NEW YORK, Nov 15 (Reuters) – When Pamela Keniston sits down to do her monthly budget, she has a new element to account for these days.
Hint: Short blonde fur, barks fiercely at bunnies and goes by the name of Zuzu.
The lovable “supermutt” – a mix of Yorkie, Maltese, Chihuahua and Dachshund – came into Keniston’s life in May 2020, early in the pandemic. But Keniston was not prepared for the cost.
From regular grooming, to food, to the spoiled stylings of pajamas and jackets and special collars, the dollars added up quickly. Throw in some medical needs – little Zuzu’s knees needed pricey procedures – and the financial realities of pandemic pets can sometimes take new owners aback.
“Having a pet is a big financial commitment,” says Keniston, a digital marketing consultant in Chapin, South Carolina. “All those things really add up.”
Indeed, the costs of four-legged companionship are staggering: Since the beginning of the COVID crisis, one in five American households, or 23 million, brought a dog or cat into the house, according to the ASPCA.
And a new survey finds they are forking out some $4,500 for yearly care. That is more than pet parents expected in 61% of cases, according to findings from OnePoll, done in partnership with insurer MetLife.
In fact, two in five respondents said that our furry friends are as expensive, or even more so, than dependents of the human variety. No wonder 60% said they tuck away $200 from every paycheck, specifically for their pet’s necessities.
So how can pet parents be smart about their spending without completely draining their financial accounts? Here are four tips.
INSURANCE
For some reason the notion of finding insurance stresses pet parents out: 32% find it overwhelming, according to the MetLife survey.
But you should definitely look into coverage, because if you do not have it, you could be forced into some very difficult choices (and huge out-of-pocket bills). You will find the best prices when your pet is still young and has not yet encountered any health conditions.
Comparison shop just like you would for your own policy, weighing monthly cost against issues like deductibles and the percentage covered after that. In 2020, the average annual premium was $594.15 for dogs, $341.81 for cats.
While the upfront costs of insurance are never fun, the return can be well worth it. Little Zuzu’s knee problems – “luxating patellas” to be specific – ended up costing around $3,000 to fix, Keniston says. Thankfully, pet insurance just kicked in – and covered 90% of that bill.
PREVENTATIVE CARE
If you are looking to save money, it might be very tempting to put off those annual checkups. But think long term.
“Don’t skip annual wellness visits, because this is when your veterinarian can potentially catch problems that can be managed or reversed,” says Kristen Levine, publisher of the Pet Living blog and co-author of the book “Pampered Pets on a Budget”. “This will be less expensive than treating a health condition, possibly a chronic one, that was not prevented earlier.”
FOOD
Pet food has definitely gone “premium” in recent years, but that does not mean you have to pay five-star prices.
Some ways to save up to 30% on that kibble bill, according to Levine: Buy in bulk, but store in airtight containers to preserve freshness. Comparison shop for best prices at Chewy.com or Amazon, or warehouse outlets like Costco and Sam’s Club.
And be sure to maximize the use of promotional savings and coupons. In addition, take advantage of the “subscribe and save” option for regular online purchases.
MEDICATION
One cost you cannot really avoid is medication – either for specific conditions, or for ongoing preventative care such as for fleas or heartworm. But you do you have some flexibility in where you get those medications from, and how much you pay.
“There are several websites that offer discounts on over-the-counter and prescription medicines, like Chewy.com and 1800petmeds.com,” says Brandi Hunter Munden, vice president of communications for the American Kennel Club. “There are also companies that have coupons, like GoodRx.”
Of course, as any pet parent will tell you, the love and companionship are worth any costs a hundred times over. Just be aware that it will probably set you back more than you expect.
“It’s important to have the budget, and the resources, and the bandwidth in your life. And if you do — then you just can’t beat the love of a dog,” Keniston says.

There are many potentially pesky parasites roaming about that pose a threat to our beloved pets, from mites and ticks to roundworms and heartworms. But if a cat doesn’t step a toe bean outside, can indoor cats get fleas, too? They sure can, says Brian Evans, DVM at Dutch.
“I’ve seen indoor-only cats who live on the 40th floor of a high rise in New York City get fleas,” Evans says. How can indoor cats get fleas? Several ways. Here are the most common ways indoor cats get fleas and what to do if you spot an uninvited houseguest.
Life Cycle of Fleas
So, here’s the bad news: fleas aren’t particular about the species or things they hitch a ride and feed on. They have four life stages that go like this:
Female fleas typically lay their eggs on a host’s skin. Because they don’t stick, they roll off into the host’s environment. According to Cornell University, a flea can lay up to 40 eggs per day.
It takes the eggs about twelve days to hatch. Then, the hatched larvae find somewhere dark and warm to build a cocoon and grow—such as carpet fibers.
In the cocoon, larvae grow into pupae. Until they sense a host nearby, they’ll stay safely tucked away in the cocoon. Sometimes this can take months, unphased by insecticides, winter weather, or drought conditions.
Within hours of emerging, the adult flea will have fed on their host and females will begin to lay more eggs.
5 Ways Indoor Cats Get Fleas
Fleas can hop on over to your cat or home during any of these life stages. Here’s how:
1. Other Pets
According to Evans, a flea hitching a ride on another pet, like your dog, is the most common way indoor cats get fleas. If you think your cat is safe from fleas because your dog is on flea preventatives, Evans says that’s not the case. “Even then, some fleas can jump from the dog to your cat before they have been killed by the flea medicine on your dog. So, while it is good that your dog is on flea medicine, your cat could still be at risk.”

2. Other Humans
Asking guests to leave their shoes at the door can help stop the spread of harmful hitchhikers like flea eggs and larvae. If someone else was in an environment with fleas, they can happily catch a ride on clothing or other belongings.
3. Rodents
There are a lot of different species of fleas, including dog fleas, cat fleas, and rat fleas. Despite their names, none of these fleas are picky eaters and they’ll jump from species to species to feed.
4. Sharing Supplies and Household Items
These annoying little bloodsuckers can tuck away in the bristles of a pet brush or in the new sweater you found at the thrift store. Before bringing secondhand items in or swapping pet supplies, inspect them for flea dirt then sanitize, sanitize, sanitize.

5. Traveling
Your cat might be a happy house cat, but we’ll bet that she ventures out of the house once a year or more to see the vet, travel with you, or stay at a boarding facility. Anytime your cat leaves the house or ventures to an area where other pets have been, she can pick up fleas.
What To Do If You Find Fleas on Your Indoor Cat
You can tell your indoor cat has fleas if they itch, are losing fur, or if you’ve spotted flea dirt. “By the time you have noticed that your pet has fleas, the fleas have already laid eggs in your house and there will be more fleas on the way,” Evans says. That’s why he recommends not just one spot-on flea treatment for your cat, but monthly treatments for all pets in your home. If you’re dealing with an active flea infestation, these steps can help get rid of them:
Use a flea shampoo: There are shampoos formulated for active flea infestations (rather than prevention). If your cat is willing to be bathed, follow the shampoo’s directions—typically letting the suds settle on the skin for several minutes—before washing away those pesky parasites.
Spot-on flea treatments
Daily vacuuming and carpet cleaning to remove fleas and larvae from the carpet fibers
Deep cleaning of bedding, pet beds, and other fabrics
For severe cases of flea infestation, you might need to reach for a DIY cat flea remedy like a fog treatment. Or, call the pros for extermination. Don’t forget to talk to your vet for their recommendations on ridding your cat of fleas; they might suggest an oral medication or additional treatments.

How to Prevent Fleas and Ticks on Indoor Cats
Finally, some good news: fleas and ticks can be prevented by simply applying monthly treatments. In fact, Evans suggests a full spectrum spot-on treatment that also protects against heartworms.
“Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any holistic or DIY flea preventatives that are effective,” Evans adds. Because fleas carry diseases and other parasites (like the bacteria responsible for cat scratch fever and tapeworms if a flea is ingested), you definitely want to make sure your indoor or outdoor cat is covered—even in the winter months.

im only posting this bc i desperately need to exorcise this thought somewhere bc it wont fucking leave me alone
those of you who know me personally or follow my instagram know about this but for those of you who dont: in a horrible turn of events, our plan to put down our geriatric yellow labrador retriever dixie was unfortunately and unexpectedly doubled today to having to put down our 3 year old engam bulldog, bean, as well
when we got him in mid december, 2015 he was barely out of puppyhood, we found him wandering around near the highway at our local gas station with a collar and no tag, trying to jump into two out-of-towner girls’ car. my stepdad intervened bc they couldnt take bean with them obviously, and brought him home instead.
we put up lost dog flyers everywhere all over our very small city, in an attempt to maybe see if someone would indeed come forward for their dog. we knew he wasnt just a stray because of his collar.
almost right off the bat, we were told by a woman who worked at the gas station that there was a man who lived in the trailer park just across the road, located behind the pancake diner. you can see it from the gas station parking lot. she told us that he had a lot of dogs that he typically kept chained up outside in poor conditions, and beat them regularly. to us? it seemed totally reasonable that that must’ve been where bean came from, given the fact he was a dog and we found him literally less than 50 feet away from where this fucking man lived.
no one came forward to claim bean. we kept those flyers up for months, we only put them up to begin with knowing he may have been thrown out by (or escaped from) this disgusting man just because there was the possibility that it wasn’t his dog, but someone else’s. as well as the potential for legal intervention if this fabled abuser found out we had technically stolen his dog (and full disclosure, fuck him for what he does, i hope all his dogs get stolen like they need to be, i myself was not fond of the idea of just giving the dog back to this creep if he was indeed the owner but i was only 16 at the time so there wasnt much i could do)
with no one claiming bean, after those months passed, we decided that he was ours now. flyers were taken down, we gave him his collar and nametag, to be real he’d already been named by us in the first few days we had him. he was going to be ours no matter what; my mother always told me its a rule that if you name a stray, and do it quick before anyone can object to keeping it, it’s yours now. that’s your pet, with it’s new name.
so we carried on with our lives, now having not just one dog, but two. it was a bit iffy with my stepfather keeping bean since we didnt technically need to manage two dogs at the time, but we still did it anyways because we loved him, the little bean man.
but here’s where my problem lies and this is why im writing this now: as time went on and we continued to have bean as our pet, some stuff about the original suggestion that he belonged to an abusive older man who lived in close proximity to where we found bean wasnt adding up
due to dixie’s failing body, she would sometimes lose control of her bowels inside the house, which was becoming unacceptable when she stayed in overnight. so, she stayed outside. she and bean bonded, so they stayed outside together too. (and for clarity here, i know what some of you might want to say, but we knew very early on that bulldogs do not do well with heat or isolation. we also know that dixie probably shouldve been put down years ago, but here’s the trouble: my stepfather would not let us euthanize her. she is his dog technically, and the thought hurt him so much that he would not agree to it for YEARS. dixie and bean were too attached to separate them for long periods of time like they would be if we kept bean inside mostly and her outside mostly; that would’ve been cruel in its own special way. we put pools out for bean and visited with both dogs for as much as we could outside, bathed them, put fans out for them in the summer. our only option to give bean the main love and care he needed was, and of course we had other reasons to do this, to put dixie down, which was where we thought we were finally going to be by tomorrow, but thats not what happened, as you can tell)
as to be expected, bean sometimes found his way inside, mostly by applying his american bulldog traits to memorizing when unfamiliar guests would come over and bolt in the house. he did this enough times and very recently we were letting him stay inside instead of taking him back out, and all of these experiences combined, we noticed something: bean was housebroken. he was out of practice with it, and did not know very well how to communicate that he needed to go outside to use the bathroom, but he did know what to do. he would run to the door if he had to go, not always making it, but still, he was housebroken. he only marked furniture once while inside, in his entire lifespan thus far. that was a red flag to us, but especially my mother, who realized this skill of beans directly contradicted the statement that he was probably kept outside, chained up, starved, and beaten by the trailer park guy. not to mention, bean came to us in nearly perfect condition to begin with, just skinny. no patches of fur gone, he was the opposite of skittish and aggressive, no bruises, nothing. just a loving, bouncy, stupid bulldog mix
this, im not sure if im correct about this, but it stands out enough to me that i feel its worth mentioning: bean is not a mutt of any kind, and his breed contradicts those types of breeds most people who abuse animals come to own; usually large breeds, breeds inaccurately known for aggression, and breeds used by abusers to make aggressive bc they know the fighting power of these dogs (pitbulls, american bulldogs, etc). bean is an engam bulldog (english/american mix), which is a very obscure mixed breed dog to begin with and especially obscure where i live, and as we all know english bulldogs are short, stout, fat little things that can basically do no harm whatsoever. they also have a history of inbreeding to look how they do. i know this man may have just seen ‘bulldog’ and snagged him thinking he’d be aggressive, but that does not sit right with me for two other reasons: bean’s conformation (body structure) and coloration. there is nothing about bean that suggests he was bred to be used for fighting, or that he’s a true mutt, or anything of the sort. his body type literally resembles that of show dogs, and his fur coloration is highly unusual because he’s blue. obviously not literally blue but the type of blue-grey you can find in animals, typically seen in cats. bean’s coloration is almost NEVER found in ANY breed of bulldog, it is INCREDIBLY rare that he looks like this. his condition in which we found him, his housebrokenness, his color and his body formation lead, in me and my family’s opinion, to an alternative opinion: he belonged to someone that got him because they wanted a dog as a pet, not to beat, and they either bred him themselves or bought him (probably from a pet store or breeder) for his color and conformation.
but why would they dump a dog this valuable? my mom said this to me earlier, sobbing after she returned from the vet today, and this is my whole reason for writing this insane fucking novel of a post: whoever dumped bean threw out a sick puppy, and on purpose.
bean hasnt been injured or contracted an unvaccinated illness or anything like that. he had been experiencing extreme stomach distension for the past month, whereas he was losing weight everywhere else on his body. he had also been vomiting. but he wasnt depressed, or lethargic. maybe his personality was a little off but not so much it was horribly noticeable, and at that, he was still eating regularly everyday. we came to the conclusion he had parasites, though ive always been terrified something more serious was going on (i dont get listened to though).
as it turns out, i was right. mom took him in today, the day before dixie was set to be put down, for his deworming pills. what she got instead was a diagnosis of possible lung cancer. his blood work was normal, which is unusual in animals with cancer, but he still had nodules on his lungs that highly resembled cancer. his heart was also severely enlarged due to heartworms, and his stomach was so distended because it was full of fluid and blood. they did send his blood off for labs, but even if his lungs were fine, he was going to die anyway (they got a second opinion from another practice and they also agree it was probably cancerous). he has a 15% survival rate for only the very first heartworm treatment, which will cost $500. nothing lives very long with an enlarged heart to begin with. we don’t have that money, and for a treatment that will definitely kill him? i dont even know why he has so much blood and fluid in his digestive tract. bean, a dog who is only 3 or 4 years old, has an enlarged heart, lung tumors and fluid/blood all in his abdomen. the vet was apparently stunned that a dog this young could have this many potentially (and one definitely) fatal health problem(s).
i now fully believe that whoever owned him before knew he had all these issues, or that he was going to develop them. i think it makes sense. i also think they’re cheap, cruel fucks who didnt want to shell out that much money to take care of him, or pay to take him to a shelter/sanctuary, and so what did they do? they did what many people these days very regularly do when their new pet has become undesirable: they fucking dumped him on the side of the road and booked it. took his nametag off and everything, to make him look like a stray. they left him for some well meaning, animal loving family like mine to find him, not know anything about these preexisting health issues, and assume he’s healthy enough; maybe just needs a few more vaccinations and a worm and flea treatment. he showed no signs of lung cancer or heart problems in all his life up until this past month, and he’s still so young. i will even go as far as to say that he himself may be severely inbred, which could be the cause of these health issues. given his specific posture and color, and that he’s a bulldog, it’d make sense. it seems like he came from some kind of breeder to begin with anyway.
so now that ive said that and got it all out of the way, i want to leave an open letter to the hypothetical cunt that did this to us and bean:
