#I like how now my fursona colors make one nice gradient

How did you come up with the design of your sona? :o
I can kinda show you the whole evolution of my fursona design This is gonna be a bit of a long post so after the first iteration I'll put a read more One of the first things I did when I got my first drawing tablet was designed a fursona I couldn't decide between fox or dragon so I combined the two (which eventually melted down into fluffy dragon) I started with brown, orange and white and then picked a few more colors that I felt were fitting The orange around the belly was to make the design a little less boring and that stuck (This one is from May 2020)
Tumblr media
After that, I drew (him at the time) a bunch of times until I decided to redesign, this time smol (This one is from June 2020)
Tumblr media
But I didn't feel satisfied with the fur pattern as much so I went and did another redesign:
Tumblr media
This fur pattern is somewhat similar to the one I use now, but there are a bunch of obvious differences. (this one is from November 2020)
Then in February of 2021 I kinda realized I am trans/nonbinary (both apply) and after a long while of either taking a break or something else (I don't remember) I made this ref sheet: (this one's from June 2021)
Tumblr media
Getting a lot closer to their design now, but still some differences (the grey is still there among other things) I am sorta genderfluid (though it seems to not ever touch male) and after a while went all the way to having a female fursona (this one is from November 2021)
Tumblr media
And since then I've only really made minor changes or updated the art (and I feel like I can explain myself a lot more clearly now) So yeah This is the one from recently (May 2022):
Tumblr media
I did skip some minor iterations (mainly one between the second and third ref shown here that had no changes, just updated art) This was a really long post, and in the process of digging all of this up I felt like every possible emotion except frustration looking at my old art

@searingjackalope made the mistake of allowing me free reign regarding two of the lair reviews, and I challenge you to figure out which ones.

Aether has a really impressively cohesive color scheme for all its variety. At first I wondered if she was a gen one because she has that kind of randomized color scheme that’s a challenge to work with but beautiful when you pull it off, but she had parents and I couldn’t bring myself to believe that the orange tones in her skin matching her secondary could be a coincidence. Then I realized you’d scattered her. (And, looking at her parents, fully gened and breedchanged her too, I am impressed.) I think the star here is her copper underbelly, which has green undertones and orangey overtones that really tie together her primary and secondary. But honestly, all of it somehow works out so well? The orange in her skink is really killing it, but I also love how her carrot toxin has both bright oranges to match the skink stripes and darker, more earthy ones, almost terracotta, to match the more natural tones in her copper underbelly. Her wings and primary have enough of a pattern that they kind of downplay her accent, but I think that works in her favor because the eyes almost looks like more of the yellowish spots from her toxin.... until you look closer and then the whole affect reveals itself piece by piece.

Esther caught my eye because I rarely ever see elderly dragons and then I realized she had an antique primary and I literally can’t pass up a visual pun like that. She has glasses. She has crochet apparel. She has a shawl. She has a sword. All the necessary old timey grandma apparel. I love antique poison on almost anything, but I especially like it here next to the cream toxin. The cooler tones of antique next to the warmer tones of cream make for an interesting contrast, especially since the poison picks up slate blue patterns and toxin picks up teal patterns, so you also get those two blues bouncing off each other. her apparel is beautifully balanced, picking up both the cream tones in her secondary and the muted blues in her primary. I like it emphasizes her primary’s accent color but her secondary’s main color, which is a really clever bit of color balancing. Since snappers have a lot of underbelly coverage, it doesn’t need much support from the apparel, so the  limited use of black really suits her, especially since the dusty sage sash carries the black vertically up and down as a contrast to the horizontal flow of her underbelly. And of course i’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that pitch perfect accent, but honestly you can’t say anything more about perfection.

As we all know by now, I am a sucker for black and gold, and twice that for oilslick, so Hornet has me coming and going. Oilslick skink is so good it should be illegal. Normally I’m a little sad to cover up the cool gradient effect skink gives on the neck, but in this case, I think his saffron glimmer is even better. Since nocturnes have that fancy neck frill reflecting their secondary, it puts his saffron glimmer right next to the bronze frill, and I think it brings out richer tones in both of them than the comparatively brighter yellow lines of his skink would, in addition to the nice line you get as that bronze/saffron juxtaposition moves down his body along his right wing. The bright yellows of his skink might overpower his darker, less bright secondary and tertiary, but in the relatively small amounts, and especially against the much darker brown of oilslick, they pop instead of glare, serving as highlights that make the golds and yellows in his apparel stand out too. I really like the way the candles echo the black and yellow in his primary, but by far my favorite part of his apparel is the layering of the roundhorns, veil, and his own natural horns. The mixture of black from the roundhorns and his primary, gold from his apparel and those little lines of skink on his face, and glittering saffron that could be his horns or could be part of a crown, is really superb.

Kona’s color scheme is glorious, and it took me a couple passes just to figure out exactly how you were achieving this stunning affect. Her orchid lace is really the gem that ties it all together, I think. I especially love the effect of it against the blue of the pearl skink on her throat (aided by the fact that coatls have such long elegant necks.) Her wings are also a really elaborate bit of layering, with the lace orchid over her pearl paint, and the lines of her accent over that. I like the way the accent breaks up the lace pattern at the edges of her wings, so they look irregular, and almost ragged, since it really fits in with her lore regarding the way her health issues affect her plumage. The glowy effect on the pink runes, since it’s almost white, makes it hard to tell exactly where the lines of her accent end and her paint secondary begins. As for her apparel, it’s all on point. The swirling lines of the blue and purple lanterns next to the blue and purple curl of her tail is too perfect. I can’t decide which I like better, the way the sage shawl layers over the ghost flame cloak so they look like a single piece of apparel, or the way the little beads dangle down against the gauze of the cloak. the rose arm and leg tangles are an especially nice, subtle finishing touch. The way they run opposite to the stripes of her skink, is very visually pleasing.

Okay Listen, I know a furry color scheme when I see one. The fake fur. The paw-like gloves. The shocked and shamed expression. This boy? I have just caught him halfway into his fursuit and he is RIGHTFULLY EMBARASSED. Don’t try to hide that bright pink and purple from me, Postercore, I know your fursona is a sparkledog and you have a reference sheet with its tri-colored dick featured in loving detail. (”But Mirrorstone” you say, “actually Verethi is the furry in my lair-” AND WHO IS STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO HER? CHECK AND MATE. He commissions her for porn of his fursona, obviously.)

The angel wings, the rose petals, the beautifully coiffed Saskue hair? Starchild is 100% an otaku and he absolutely owns a dakimura that he refers to as his waifu and has set up numerous romantic candlelit dinners with. In cosplay. Only his sweet, beautiful Yuki-chan could ever understand the turmoils his troubled heart goes through. What he actually goes through is an obscene amount of fabric softener and no one dares mention it.
