Fool For Love
part 4

part 1, part 2, part 3
~~~
Astarion x reader/Tav
Tags: (mild?) angst, pining, pining while fucking, jealousy, eventual happy ending
Summary: You thought you knew what you were doing when you let Astarion into your bed. He doesn’t have feelings for you, and vice versa. Only… now you do.
You’ve finally made a decision on how to handle it, but it turns out it might not be that easy to actually do as planned.
~~~
It’s as if all the gods have come together to conspire against you. Truly, you wonder if you accidentally angered one or several of them, because after dinner, nothing goes as planned.
First it is Shadowheart, seeking your counsel about a scroll in her possession she wants you to take a look at. Next it is Lae’zel, wanting to discuss again your findings about Orpheus and what it might mean.
You almost scream out loud when Karlach calls for you just as you are finally about to approach Astarion.
You definitely do scream, just a little, when you collide with a tipsy Gale and the collision causes red wine to splatter all over your shirt and trousers. Cursing under your breath, you see Astarion glance your way with a chuckle. As tempting as it is to stomp over and drag him into his tent just to have it over with, you decide a change of clothes first is the wisest course of action.
It’s much less conspicuous, for one — everyone would notice and wonder if you decide to talk to him now — and you need a moment to cool down.
You’re quick about it, grabbing the first clean pieces of clothing you can find — but it’s not quick enough.
When you walk out of your tent again, Astarion is nowhere to be seen. Telling yourself that it’s not strange for you to inquire about his whereabouts, you ask Halsin if he has seen him.
“I think he went to find something to eat.”
“Ah.” Dammit. ”I see.”
You stare into the dark forest surrounding the camp, wondering if it will seem odd if you go after him. Probably not, if they even notice you leave.
In the end, you decide to remain where you are, sitting down by the fire with the others. He will be back sooner or later, and until then, you can enjoy the company of your friends. Or try to, at least.
Astarion’s still not back when Gale suddenly stands and announces that it’s time to head out. Watching them all laugh and banter as they gather blankets and wine, you realise that you should do things like this more often. Take the time to just have fun. Especially now, when what you have to face next is the Shadowlands, a place that sounds more terrifying than anything else your party has encountered so far.
Not counting getting tadpoles inside your head.
It’s actually a quite nice spot Gale has found. Wide stretches of soft grass swaying in the night breeze, the surrounding tree line creating a sense of protection and serenity. If your heart wasn’t already attached to another, you think you would’ve enjoyed going here alone with Gale. Maybe.
“Where’s the food? Surely we need something to snack on too?”
“Karlach…”
Shrugging, Shadowheart held up the bottles in her hands. “Sorry, too busy grabbing the wine.”
“I’ll go,” you offer, because it would be a shame to bring the mood down with unnecessary squabbling. The fact that there’s a chance you might find a certain elf back at camp has absolutely nothing to do with it. Well, maybe a little.
“Thanks, soldier, you’re the best!”
You leave before anyone gets the idea of tagging along. If Astarion is back, you wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to finally talk with him. Even if it ruins the night for one or both of you.
When you get back, you see Withers by his tent. But no Astarion in sight.
“Where is that goddamn man?” You stomp over to his tent. “Astarion? Are you here?”
Nothing.
Muttering to yourself, you take a basket and fill it with bread, cheese, and some fruit. With how everything has gone so far tonight, you grab a bottle of what you presume is wine, because the urge to get blissfully drunk is too hard to resist.
As you trudge back to the others, you wistfully wonder where Astarion has been all night. Was he avoiding you? And if so, why?
“Tav, there you are!” Karlach shoots up from her seat on the blanket and relieves you of the basket. “Look who we found!”
And there he is.
“Astarion.”
Sitting between Halsin and Shadowheart.
“Tav,” Gale pats the spot next to him, “I saved you a seat.”
Of course he did. “Thank you, Gale.”
Even if you had it in you dismiss him, you realise quickly that there’s no other space available. So you sit down, because there’s not much else you can do.
It turns out that the bottle you snagged isn’t wine but rum, but that suits you just fine at this point. You try to listen as Gale talks to you about the constellations he points at, but your focus keeps shifting to Astarion. The way he leans closer to Shadowheart, the way he keeps touching Halsin. You are used to him being a bit of a flirt, but this feels like more. It feels like there’s actual intent behind it and not him just being his usual self.
If you didn’t know any better, you’d say that he’s trying to make you jealous. Which is ridiculous, of course.
Unless it isn’t. You take another swig of the rum. “Ridiculous.”
“I beg your pardon?”
Astarion glances your way but quickly turns to Halsin again when he catches you watching. The bastard. Well, two can play that game. “Oh.” You inch just a little bit closer to Gale. “I was just saying to myself how ridiculously beautiful the sky is.” Smooth, Tav, smooth. You almost roll your eyes at yourself.
Gale smiles. “It is, isn’t it?”
For the next half hour, you make yourself focus on Gale, and Gale alone. He is an interesting man — when he’s not talking about Mystra. In the back of your mind, you know you shouldn’t be doing this, but your drunk brain justifies it by telling yourself that Gale deserves an attentive audience. He’s the reason why you’re all here, after all.
He really is nice — too nice for someone like you. You realise that at some point while observing Gale and Karlach talk about… something. You’re not really listening anymore, once again caught up in your own hazy mind.
The bottle in your hand is almost empty — when did that happen? Oh, right. You have been taking a sip every time you hear Astarion laugh or call someone else a pet name. Stupid idea, that.
With a heavy sigh, you flop back to lie down on the blanket. Everyone’s voices turn into background noise as you stare up at the stars. Or try to, because the world is spinning, spinning, and the last thing you hear before you doze off is someone saying your name.

🥀 secret's canon gameplay events.
cece's story is one of complicated morality and finding herself in the midst of the amnesia, learning which validation she's chasing is the right validation to be chasing, and ultimately, that she should be doing what feels good to her on its own merit, and not dictated by those around her. she plays a redeemed dark urge and ultimately a good in general run, except for the fact that secret is a little shady in her methods and weighs up both the immediate and long term benefits for certain actions, while sticking to her own (almost impossible to decipher) moral compass, while somehow remaining mostly on the good side of things. this got long (even if its not as detailed as i'd like), so i'm putting it under the cut a note: obviously, everyone's playthroughs and canons are different, and plotting can happen about many certain things!
act i.
TADPOLE STATUS. dabbles with a few. trust in the dream guardian starts strong (it's in the form of her brother, who she can't remember but feels strongly enough for), but the tadpole consumption is more about her own power than respecting the dream guardian.
the nautiloid crash. - teams up with shadowheart, astarion, gale, lae'zel and wyll in that order. - agrees to help zevlor and the tieflings, investigates kahga, but doesn't confront her. - takes wyll's words at face value and strikes karlach before she has the chance to explain.
druid's grove. - convinces rolan to stay with the tiefling refugees like lia wants. - driven by her urges, strikes alfira down behind the emerald grove, but manages to make the final blow non-lethal. - isn't able to avoid killing quil. - saves arabella, doesn't help the kids steal the sacred idol. - approaches nettie for help, is poisoned by her, and she becomes hostile when the party try to find the cure. - raphael offers his aid and secret doesn't entirely turn him down, but is wary of making any kind of deal, less than him being a devil.
the goblin camp. - finds halsin and decides to take down the goblins down while he waits in the pens. - faces priestess gut alone, intending to take her away and kill her covertly, and is saved by korilla. - non-lethally attacks minthara after speaking with gut and realising they're all infected with a tadpole, with hopes of helping her, but she flees to moonrise before secret can talk to her on their own terms.
the creche. - visits the creche, sits in the zaith'isk herself, and is saved by her dream guardian. - does take the githyanki egg, but to give to lae'zel, not to lady esther. - defies vlakith.
misc. - saves barcus wroot. - saves councillor florrick. - intimidates ethel into letting mayrina go and takes a boon from the conversation, too. - snaps the wand that could return connor to life in front of mayrina after telling her she could bring him back.
the underdark.- (temporarily) works with brithvar after getting nere out of the rubble, only to extort him afterwards and demand the release of the gnomes. - finds omeluum and creates the potion he thinks will help. it doesn't, but she likes the guy. - eats the noblestalk, recovering the memory of baby's first murder spree. - lets baelen die. - turns the roethe against the duergar. - deliver's nere's head to soveriegn spaw. - finds the grymforge. - finds the sussur tree bark and makes a sussur dagger for herself.
act ii.
TADPOLE STATUS. continuing to dabble, but something feels wrong with the dream guardian, and over the course of act ii, especially after talking to minthara, starts distancing herself from consuming more tadpoles. power is important, but something more powerful on the other end of the tadpole that could take control is not a risk she's willing to take or encourage.
- takes the absolutist caravan with kar'niss to establish the cover they will need at moonrise. - tells elminster he can go fuck himself if he thinks she's going to let gale blow himself up. is gentler with gale one-on-one, but expresses the same sentiment. - saves isobel from being taken by marcus. - refuses to do as scleritas fel tells her to, not killing isobel, and then confesses to her partner that she is going to kill them and she can't control it. resists the urge, tied up by her lover all night. - frees minthara from moonrise and lets her stay in the camp. - finds arabella's parents, then arabella, and lets her stay in the camp. - saves rolan. - frees the tieflings and the gnomes (long standing grudge on wulbren bongle begins). - talks yurgir into killing himself. - talks all the thorms into killing themselves, with the exception of gerringothe. - encounters he who was, punishing the soul by telling her to stab herself (in he who was' body). gladly frees his corpse of his raven gloves. (the raven's name is quoth, but secret renames her imperator). - cures the shadowcursed lands of the curse. - helps shadowheart face the truth of her past with aylin, in turn saving the aasimar and beginning shadowheart's release from shar's grasp. - teams up with jaheira and invites her to travel with them. - tries, almost desperately, to save ketheric. ultimately fails.
act iii.
TADPOLE STATUS. the emperor can go fuck itself. no longer trusts it and will do anything against it out of spite, within tactical reason. rejects the astral tadpole.
- tries to kill the emperor in the astral prism, until its clear that it has been protecting them. begrudgingly allows him to live. - forms an alliance with gortash. - solves the open hand temple murders. - frees counsellor florrick. - doesn't hand aylin over to lorroakan - encounters mayrina again, helps finish off ethel for good. - helps wyll decide to claim his freedom, at the cost of his father's life. - keeps rakath's gold. - extends the astral prism's protection to minsc. - persuades astarion not to ascend, and to let the 7000 spawn into the underdark. - encourages wyll to become the blade of avernus. - helps shadowheart in the house of grief, ultimately killing viconia devir, and reconnecting her with nocturne. - considers raphael's deal (the emperor wouldn't like it), but ultimately double crosses him (the crown has caused too many problems for gale and thats personal now) and - enters into the house of hope to steal the orphic hammer. - made a deal with helsik, but doesn't honour it. simply doesn't return to the devil's fee once the gauntlets were acquired. - gains entry to the murder tribunal by murdering and taking the hands, contemplates becoming an unholy assassin, leaning into things that feel familiar on a muscle memory level, and very badly wants to kill valeria on non-bhaalspawn murderous impulses. ends up deciding to kill sarevok, however. something about understanding that bhaalspawn all want to kill each other and it was likely inevitable anyway. - defeats orin in single combat and rejects bhaal. - saves orin's hostage. - spits in the emperor's face and free's orpheus, who she let's become a mindflayer. - defeats the netherbrain and doesn't become the absolute.

"You're thinking about him again, aren't you?"
Rhaenyra looked up at him as she approached, her smile at seeing him merging into one of confusion. "Who?"
Astarion tittered playfully at her, a sly smile on his lips. "Your expression gave you away darling. Your dream visitor, the one who came to us at Moonrise, you were thinking about him...indecently."
Rhaenyra prayed she wasn't blushing as she felt the truth behind his words resonating from something within her. He was quite right. After they'd left Moonrise and after seeing her dream visitor in the flesh outside of the astral prism, Rhaenyra had struggled not to think about him whenever her mind wandered. The mystery behind the dream visitor vexed her constantly but she wondered sometimes if she knew more than she realised, and the fact that he was evasive with some answers he gave to her direct questions made her think if she was a fool to trust him. She wanted to trust him, for he had protected her and the rest of them and gave sound advice...but was that it? Was she just a means to an end that would discarded once their goal was reached? She didn't want to acknowledge the hurt at the thought but this was often followed by scorn at herself. She couldn't afford to be the hopeless romantic and the dream visitor might well not in interested in her like that. But his words at Moonrise, telling her that her beauty and kindness was admired by him, she couldn't help but feel her heart swoon.
However, Rhaenyra really didn't want to have this conversation with Astarion of all people. For one thing, he might be upset with her, and many would say he would be well justified. They were each other's partner and whilst their relationship was mostly platonic nowadays, it didn't stop them their frantic kisses whenever they got a moment to themselves. Her thoughts, of lust and affection, towards the dream visitor complicated matters. It made her think she was cheating on Astarion, but it appeared that her vampire didn't mind.
Astarion continued, giving her a sheepish look. "Look, I know I said that I wasn't ready for a proper relationship yet and I know that I want something real with you, but I would understand if you wanted to...sow your oats, as it were."
Her expression was one of blatant shock now. "You're...serious about this?"
"We all have needs darling" he said casually and she didn't see any hurt or defensiveness in his face or words. She'd got very good at recognising when Astarion was putting on a brave face, but here, he seemed utterly genuine. "I don't expect you to remain committed to me right now. I'm not able to give you all of me right now and I don't think it's fair to keep you all to myself. Not when there are alternatives out there for you that aren't Gale."
Rhaenyra smirked with amusement at the scorn on the last word. Astarion was convinced that Gale was in love with her and even if that were so, he held no appeal over her like that. Astarion was the only one in their camp who drew her attention, but even his was being dwarfed by the dream visitor.
She stepped forwards and offered her hand, which he took and squeezed gently. "I don't know what to think, in all honesty. Are...I don't even know what's happening."
Astarion brushed a tray hair away from her face and cupped her cheek gently, running his thumb gently over the skin. "I know how to see when someone is pining, my sweet."
Rhaenyra's cheeks flushed and she ducked her head.
"He was rather delicious, wasn't he?" As tarion said, teasing her a little more. "I don't blame you for wondering what he looks like under that armour, or what his silver tongue can do when it's not talking."
Rhaenyra half laughed, half groaned in frustration. "It's aggravating! I cannot get him out of my mind, as he seems to have made himself quite comfortable there, probably sitting on my sanity!"
Astarion quirked a brow. "Can he hear this conversation?"
Rhaenyra's eyes widened in horror "Fuck. Maybe. Hope not."
Unbidden and causing her to stir, familiar words echoed across her mind, and going by his expression he was speaking to Astarion too.
Your hopes are in vain, sweet Rhaenyra.
Rhaenyra grimaced as Astarion burst out laughing and she buried her face in his chest as he wrapped his arms around her, still chortling.
