BON:
bon can be hard so on questions where it's not really applicable now (like.. favorite foods and the like), i'll just go with what WOULD have been the case. when he was younger. 1. what's their favorite beverage - alcoholic and/or non-alcoholic? flavored sparkling waters, he likes the bubbles. he likes high alcohol content drinks, so it does its job. 2. what's their favorite flavor? (spicy, sweet, sour, etc.) he likes fresh, citrus-y flavors, whatever category that slots into. 3. what's their favorite food? THE ALL POWERFUL ORANGE, a good orange is a treat for bon 4. breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks - which do they look forward to the most? snacks, cause he can generally eat them alone and not be judged 5. do they have a food or flavor they absolutely hate? puddings and yogurts and stuff like that, soft foods 6. can they tolerate spicy food? a fair amount, but he does have limits (he will not admit it) 7. what is their favorite animal? farm animals, especially working animals, they're nice and usually calm, bon likes that 8. what do they wear to bed? either whatever he's wearing at the time he knocks out or nothin 9. what position do they like to sleep in? huddled in a corner 10. are they a morning person or a night owl? BOTH! he's not a sleeper. if you find him sleeping its because he was probably up the past 3+ days and he just knocked out. 11. are they a heavy sleeper or do they wake up easily? if he's sleeping cause he hadn't slept the past week, he doesn't wake up easily, but if it's a purposeful rest he wakes up to a pin dropping. also re: bon sleeping, he technically can go without sleep indefinitely but he has to go into his lava form to kinda.. refresh his stats so to speak 12. it's a rainy day, what will they do cooped up inside all day? pre-incident: read! study! practice magic. post-incident: think about mortality and stare at a wall 13. do they have a favorite scent or smell? fresh air on a cool day. but he's also nostalgic about the stink smell of a tavern. 14. what do they smell like? do they wear perfume or cologne? ash and smoke. and on special days ;) burnt flesh ;) he doesn't wear perfume or cologne, he just smells weird all the time. 15. baths or showers? showers, a quick spray down and then he's out of the water as quick as possible. 16. how good are they at cooking? QUITE! bon can cook and he can cook good. he's stayed with a lot of families over the years and learned a lot of good tricks and recipes, plus what he learned from when he was growing up and would somewhat regularly cook for himself. 17. what's their favorite time of year and why? summer. he does well in the heat. also the days are longest. bon likes it when it's light out. 18. do they have a favorite holiday? bon doesn't like holidays! cause holidays come with traditions. and traditions come with expectations. and expectations come with punishments. 19. do they prefer buying or receiving gifts? giving, i guess? receiving gifts can come with a price. but it's nice to give a gift and know you expect nothing in return. 20. how tall are they, and how do they feel about their height? bonk is 5'9", he's fine with it 21. can they play any instruments? YES!!! he can play a variety, his favorites are harp and fiddle, though he also can play a mean flute, though that was mostly from his upbringing so he doesn't like it all too much 22. do they have a nice singing voice? YES!!!!! he has a most beautiful voice. he can rouse a room with a good folk song or bring a room to tears with a mournful ballad 23. do they talk to themselves? ahahaha yes. we have already seen this in comic. bon struggles with differentiating between reality and his.. imagination i guess. so. that can often lead to him just talking to himself. 24. do they enjoy music? what kind? yes! bon enjoys all sorts of music, but mostly songs you can sing along to. bar songs, shanties, ballads, he enjoys them all. he like songs that have an emotion to them if that makes sense. 25. do they make friends easily? NO. bon is both unfriendly and untrusting. however. if you are nice to him but once........... he Will die for you. and he will die for any child. loves childs. 26. surprise birthday party! how do they react? POORLY. either confused why people thought it would be a fun idea or angry that he was caught off guard. now... if you do it right..... have the surprise just be like.. a cake waiting at home or something.. a quiet night.. he will appreciate it. he Will die for you. 27. what is their favorite flower, if they have one? daffodil.. rebirth.. eternal life.. unrequited love.. perfect 28. how does your character feel about wearing jewelry? he's not a huge fan tbh. makes him feel like someone's shiny show piece. but he does like an earring or two or three 29. if they wear jewelry, what's their favorite piece? he doesn't wear jewelry regularly :( but he likes earrings! he likes little hoops that go on the top of his big ears 30. fashion forward or fashion disaster? more fashion forward than a disaster. he doesn't dress himself like.. super well.. cause his clothing tends to not last super long, but he knows how to look good 31. what kind of underwear does your character wear? NONE he's flying free 32. do they wear makeup? what kind? again, not any regularly, but will rock a good eyeliner if offered 33. do they paint their nails? no lmao good luck painting his lava nails, he'll melt ur brush, oh god and im sure the smell of burning nail polish is just awful 34. are they quick to get haircuts or do they often let it grow out? he cuts his hair pretty frequently (not well) he cuts like.. parts at a time. like 'hm this section looks a lil long' CHOP~ 35. do they know how to whistle? like a got damn bird 36. or how to braid hair? yes! he is good at this. 37. are they scared if anything in nature - bugs, snakes, lightning, being on the water, etc.? not really? he's had a lot of experience living outdoors so things that may have scared him at one point have been dealt with and most things it's like 'well i cant die so it really doesnt matter', cold and rain it's like 'well ill get real hecked up for a while but.. whatever' 38. have they ever thought they were about to die? YES! quite a few times, though not anymore lmao. one of the first times he ran away from home and nearly starved to death, the... incident, and when he was turned into a basbeo, just to name a few 39. how do they react to getting sick? pretending like he's not. pushing himself too hard until he cannot pretend anymore. nowadays tho.. he just turn into lava man and boom. all better. 40. are they afraid of blood? nah, he's seen plenty of it by this point to just not even register it. not even mostly his own! see this isn't a sad answer. 41. how do they earn money? HE DON'T! what use does a dog have for money u feel me 42. are they satisfied with their occupation or long to do something else? bon was basically a travelling bard at one point and oh boy he longs to go back to those days. his current occupation of 'guy who steals, kidnaps, murders and destroys on command' just isn't fulfilling for him. 43. how creative are they? i'd say pretty creative. he's not really doing anything with it right now, but he's a pretty imaginative guy. 44. do they know how to draw? how skilled are they? i think so! i figure that would be part of his lessons when he was younger. so he's probably.. too good at it. opposite of hana, where he's be good at portraiture and like.. pretty scenes. this also makes me think of little bon running around and putting lil devil horns on his mom's portraits 45. what do they carry around with them during the day (ie in their pockets, a bag, a purse...) doesn't really have.. a lot of things.. in the same vein tho, that jacket he wears, he's had for a while, and it's been through a lot now (i.e. the missing bottom) but. it's something he repairs and takes care of. it's special to him. for reasons. 46. do they have a sweet tooth? not especially, he doesn't like Sugar Sweet stuff, but he does like.. apples n stuff. he'll eat a peach croissant and enjoy it. everything in balance. 47. haute cuisine or cheap eats? cheap eats: more food for less 48. do they know how to swim? yes but he doesn't do it anymore cause he'll get too cold and seize up and lava man will just become a rock. he can use like.. hot tubs and very warm baths. he CAN enjoy those. 49. do they have any scars? how did they get them? well! bon had scars previous to his charred limbs (you'll see them soon) from being burned. because of.. reasons. i never know how depressing to get when talking about bon :( anyways, his charred limbs didn't happen immediately after becoming a basbeo. it basically happens when there's like.. a struggle for control between bon, his elemental, and who or whatever (maighstir, priomh, tera, his cuffs, etc.) is trying to control bon's transformation abilities. like either trying to use more power than he's being allowed, or to resist using it at all. they feel weird and crusty and leathery and warm! so the last one is kind of nice. it is unpleasant to hold his hand. 50. what kind of handwriting do they have? neat, messy, cursive, BOY CAN'T WRITE ANYMORE! he used to have really neat cursive handwriting like.. calligraphy style.

Time Raiders (2016)
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
In my quest to consume the entirety of the DMBJ franchise available in English, I have decided to start with the non-canon movie because at least this one has an ending, unlike the train wreck that is Reboot/Chongqi’s pacing. I will probably be bitter about that for all eternity, but I digress. I heard good things about the movie from the bird app, and as I am a Pingxie shipper at heart, I decided to finally watch this one.
P A R T O N E
Tumblr media
The cut-in animation to the title was gorgeous, I do so love the qilin in every adaptation. It’s particularly striking here with the gold outline and geometric, maze-like lines. It looks like the cards at the very beginning were being arranged in the image of this qilin.
My first reaction upon seeing white people in a dmbj adaptation is: oh no, the English, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear perfect English that matches the actor’s lips! What a miracle, haha. I remember The Lost Tomb 2 being the worst for how many lines had to be in English, sob.
Tumblr media
These look so cool. I see we start off with a good old “seeking immortality” antagonist, and an obsessed collector who has dedicated his whole life to this apparently. As usual, he is a scumbag threatening the locals.
The old guy’s accented English is also better than TLT2, ha. The breathy/nasal quality is not at all uncommon. I don’t know what language the locals speak though.
Tumblr media
Me, immediately: Zhang Qiling already??
I know he appears in rather early in TLT1, TLT2, and Reboot/Chongqi, but he’s so often mysteriously absent or stuck behind a gate (or in Reboot’s case, put on a bus) that I got excited, ok.
My favorite Zhang Qilings are the cold-looking pretty boy types in terms of my mental image of the character, but this one is also very easy on the eyes and as usual, unfazed in the face of danger coming at him with a knife. This is the only series in which I’m not bothered by the constant cast change between adaptations (unlike Ever Night), I suppose since it’s been this way from the start.
I’m interested in seeing how the backstories differ from canon. It’s actually rather interesting that this is pretty much an official AU, like that’s kind of wild as a concept. I’m used to the late 1990s/early 2000s anime adding new characters and changing plot points and endings everywhere, but Time Raiders takes it a step further.
Zhang Qiling being an ultra-competent badass who doesn’t even need a weapon to take the bad guys down never changes, no matter the universe. He steamrolls everyone, no questions asked.
Did he- he break the blade with his bare hands hahaha. Oh, yup, and a Zhang Qiling with a weapon is even more dangerous. I see those severed fingers. Such a good fight scene and we’re not even 5 minutes into the movie.
I love how he could have simply fired the arrow while he was still on the statue, then jumped down, but he had to be Extra and fire while he was jumping off haha.
It- the divine piece was right there?? By “beneath the statue” I would have thought it would at least be under it, not in a convenient little slot on the side of the altar area haha. So Zhang Qiling’s mission is to destroy the divine piece(s)? To, um, save the world apparently.
WHO ARE YOU? What an excellent question to ask a Zhang Qiling (and that staring into the mirror shot, too.)… I wonder if this one even knows - it’s possible he doesn’t have his signature amnesia here.
Tumblr media
Wait- a gate? I think it’s in a cave or something in the novels, but gates have significance in DMBJ. The cinematography is really nice in these mountain shots. I know nothing about film, but I like the shots in the snowy mountains.
Tumblr media
This Zhang Qiling knows and practices martial arts on screen! You would think he’d pull some moves normally, but in the drama-adaptations he tends to just beat people up as efficiently as possible. Sometimes with his sword. Other times he just fights ‘em. I have to admit Jing Boran looks excellent going through some forms. He nailed the force and power underlying every movement, then exploding outward with a strike. I do like the impression it leaves.
I, on the other hand, am an absolute noodle and look ridiculous when I do martial arts.
What in the world is happening in this flashback scene with the weird CGI qilin. Ah, it’s when he received his tattoo. That was super dramatic.
Wushanju is looking real edgy with the heavy iron gate on the interior, haha.
He is puzzling (ha!) over those cards so intensely you’d think it was a thousand piece puzzle instead haha. You’re almost there! Just a few more to finish the qilin!
Aw, is this our Wu Xie? Haha his facial hair is- hm. But I love his voice it’s so soft. Really fits that “Mr. Naive” vibe.
Tumblr media
Is that. Is that the author of the series. I found out that he makes cameos in almost all (if not all of) the adaptations!
NO. ONLY I CAN FINISH THE PUZZLE. HANDS OFF BUDDY.
Why are there so many pigeons in here. Who let them inside.
A writer, who came to hear his story and turn it into a novel- HA yup it’s the author.
“This should be a story about me and him.”
Ahh I’m loving it already. DMBJ is the ultimate bromance story. Fair warning, I do ship Pingxie so my shipper goggles will be on throughout the movie. But even without shipping, you do have to admit the series is a bromance underneath all the mystery – between the Iron Triangle, between Wu Xie and Xiaoge.
Tumblr media
This Wu Xie is a photographer and that is sort of adorable. Already there’s a theme emerging of needing to record events and telling stories. Interesting that he wants to turn his memories into a novel to record his experiences, because otherwise he’s afraid those memories might turn into a mere story in his own head. Wu Xie, that’s a worrying mindset.
Those ancient mask things always make me crack up, I don’t know why.
Ooh, background about Wu Xie’s birth into the Wu family. I’ve never read up to the part in the books where they go into his place in the family in detail. To be fair, his grandfather had three sons and only one of them had any kids – and Wu Xie is his parents’ only child. So, he becomes the only one who can really carry on the family legacy. Aw, I really like seeing his extended family present though! In the dramas we only ever get either his Second or Third Uncle, and he rarely ever mentions his parents even though they’re alive.
And there’s his namesake! The origin of his nickname, and the irony once the story gets into the Sha Hai timeline.
Wu Xie was a bit of a rascal as a kid, haha. To be fair he has a pretty sharp tongue in the novels and is mostly a pure cinnamon roll in the early dramas.
Little Wu Xie in a suit is so adorable. Nooo kid don’t go into locked up abandoned places. He’s already so adventurous haha. Seems that it’s not actually abandoned judging by all the lights on, but.
UH. MASKED MAN BEHIND YOU. I think he wants that item back. This is why you don’t go into abandoned places, kid. He definitely does not learn his lesson though. Also why are you still holding onto that thing, just drop it, I think he wants it back.
Haha he kept one of the coins.
WOAH. Every month someone in your family dies?? That’s uh- sort of traumatic. Also that would be a really good first line for a novel…Just saying. I do love the singing though.
Oh, the Nine Families exist in this universe too! They even give a quick explanation about the ranking system.
Oh yeah, I love how Wu Xie is such a nerd for all this knowledge of ancient texts and tombs. And YES HE FINALLY DOCUMENTS STUFF FOR ONCE.
Uncle Three looked dead for a moment there, scared the shit out of me too.
VAMPIRE MOTHS? Oh I hate bugs I would not be okay lol. WHOOPS. You guys are really good at reading ancient texts on the fly lol.
Tumblr media
That’s the mask he has in the beginning of the film, isn’t it. NO DON’T TOUCH THINGS IN TOMBS. AHHH. So you just put it on your face?? Well that was a stupidly simple way to open the door. I’m guessing the creator didn’t care if anyone opened it.
Tumblr media
This guy just severed his own arm, ok…and how many years later is his hand still clinging to it? UH. THIS IS WHY YOU DON’T TOUCH THINGS IN TOMBS. Then he proceeds to steal the box thing.
Ah the white dude again. I am so happy there is GOOD ENGLISH though haha.
Oh, hi Zhang Qiling. Just hanging out on a rooftop I see.
Tumblr media
He looks so melancholy. Someone give him a hug! This adaptation makes him more human, less stoic robotic superhuman, I noticed. You rarely see him eat or drink anything in the other adaptations, but here he’s just chilling on a rooftop having some drinks haha. It’s ok. I love all the Zhang Qilings.
WHAT THE HELL, LIGHTNING? What the hell is this high tech machinery haha. Eight days? Coincidentally eight days after sitting in a tomb for how many years.
That is a very Extra bookcase to hold a book that apparently has ALL the secrets.
Tumblr media
WOW that is a fancy notebook. It looks so beat up in the other versions haha. In this one, it even gets its own hidden shelf in a giant portable bookshelf!
Tumblr media
The props for this franchise are so cool and detailed. I always wish they would show more of the creative process in the BTS, I’m such a nerd for that stuff. The Longest Day in Chang’an was pretty good at that, which is half of my enjoyment of that show haha!
I’m also still pleasantly surprised they bothered to incorporate other languages. I’m not sure what the Snake Lady and the old man in the beginning were speaking, but at least the English is good.
I can’t believe they worked in a steampunk chastity belt this movie went all out, huh. Also with these weirdly high tech structures and lightning and moving tomb structures.
Tumblr media
And all the pieces start coming together! So that’s why it’s believed they hold the secret to immortality. What a steampunk-looking key.
Tumblr media
Is that a writing desk??
Oh, they’re getting a team together to go tomb raiding! Ha, forget money! You may or may not end up dying on this adventure, so who cares about money, right.
Tumblr media
He’s so cute standing there with his camera. Look at the little smile as he watches everything going on!
It’s a desk and a storage container?? Oh, there are ~qualifications~ to going on tomb raiding. Makes sense. That is the oddest looking sword.
Tumblr media
Must appreciate Zhang Qiling’s fingers in every adaptation. They look very strong and steady here. Let’s not talk about the slooow trailing across the handle.
Wow did you really just throw sand in his face. Have we not learned not to mess with Zhang Qiling after he trounced that first guy who attacked him. I love the fight scenes so much after the bore-fest that was Reboot/Chongqi’s second half of Season 1.
Tumblr media
Super pretty, but why did it cause him to stop and stare in the middle of the fight?
This is like a Final Fantasy sword haha. Also I think you should stop while you’re ahead, why did you think a table would stop this dude. (Hey, it’s Da Kui! He was in the novel but not TLT1.).
Tumblr media
It’s HERE. Their first meeting. How did he know the coin was on that cord? It wasn’t visible, I don’t think. But uh. That was a hilarious move on his part, he is so Extra?? He just casually flicks the necklace off with his big-ass sword and it drops into his hand. Then casually goes “oh, here, you dropped this” as if he wasn’t the one responsible for it coming off in the first place!!
HERE IT COMES. The unnecessarily long eye contact. Pingxie in every adaptation needs a Staring Into Your Eyes scene.
Tumblr media
Real smooth.
Ahh this Wu Xie is such a cutie. He’s like a puppy.
WHAT. Third Uncle, I can’t believe you let him tag along so easily haha. In the beginning he was scolding Wu Xie to never get involved in tomb business, then what happens? They’re going tomb raiding!!
Next Up: to the tomb we go! This can’t end badly or anything what are you talking about.

Briefcases and Blood Splatter Benny Colon x OC - Chapter 1: In the beginning
Hello! This is my first Benny Colon fic, I don’t think there’s enough out there for him, so I thought I’d give it a crack. This first chapter is essentially introductions to get us off the ground running, so please dont judge too harshly!! :) Thanks for reading.    1622 words
Olivia Byrne looked up at the towering mirror like building and straightened the creases out of her jeans. Her work bag felt heavier today than it had in a long time, she hadn’t worked for an independent company in a long time – she’d been getting comfy in her position with the police, let alone provided evidence to a trial analysis team. She’d heard great things about Dr Jason Bull and his team, but that didn’t make the uncomfortable swirl of nerves go away.
“Come on Liv.” She told herself encouragingly. Olivia had always been a bit shy, and the personal letter and request from Dr Bull that she attend and help them with this trial had not helped to cure her of that.
With a deep breath she put on a bright smile and entered through the main doors. A bored looking receptionist at the main desk pointed her towards an elevator and informed her she needed floor 22.
Olivia clipped her visitor’s badge to her blouse and gave herself an affirming nod. She knew she could do this.
TAC was huge. Olivia hadn’t been quite prepared for the size, or modernity of it. Every wall was glass, and people milled around, talking loudly and pointing at large monitors made up of multiple screens. She was in awe as she looked around, her palms feeling a little over warm with nerves.
“Olivia Byrne?” A sophisticated blond woman made her way over, a kind smile on her face.
“That’s me.”
The blond lady’s smile brightened, and she offered a perfectly manicured hand, “I’m Marissa, I work closely with Dr Bull. We’re really glad you were willing to help us with this case, we’ve never had to bring a forensic pathology specialist in before, it’s quite exciting really.” Her eyes sparkled kindly.
Olivia wiped her palm on her jeans quickly before shaking Marissa’s outstretched hand. “Hello, please call me Liv, I’ve never been one for formal, which is why I usually spend all my time in a lab. I’m a little nervous, but I hope I can help.” Marissa looked faintly surprised at her outburst. “And I’m babbling a lot aren’t I? I do that when I’m nervous, I’m sorry.”
Marissa chuckled lightly and shook her head. “Don’t you worry, there’s no one to be nervous of here. We’re all like a big family. I’m sure you’ll fit in while you’re with us. How was your flight?” Marissa started walking down the corridor, motioning for Olivia to follow along with her.
“Uh long, but good, thank you. It’s nice being away from London for a while.”
“I can imagine, but I’m afraid New York is no less chaos. I did like London when I visited there though, there’s something about it.” She stopped at a frosted glass door and swiped her ID card, there was a beep and the door opened an inch. “A few of our techs are setting up your lab for the case, just down the hall.”
Olivia’s eyes widened as she stared in disbelief at the petite blonde lady, “You’ve built me a lab?”
Marissa opened her mouth to answer, but she was cut off by a deep masculine tone coming from inside the room. “Of course you have a lab. We need you to do your best work while you’re here.”
Marissa bobbed her eyebrows and grinned good naturedly, as she pushed the door open and stepped aside for Olivia to enter.
Two men inhabited the room, one at a desk – he was blonde with glasses and a typical psychologist’s cardigan. Internally she smirked, this must be Dr Bull.
“I’m Dr Bull, and welcome to TAC, Miss Olivia Byrne. I’m glad you could make it. I’ve heard a lot about your work for Scotland yard. I took a look at the Parson triple murder case you worked on a couple of months ago. You’re very good at what you do.”
“Thank you, Dr Bull.”
“Bull or Jason” Bull cut her off waving his hand. Liv nodded and started again.
“Thank you, Jason.”
“You’re honoured to be given the choice, you must be good.” A deep, almost lyrical voice said from the other side of the room. Olivia turned to look at it’s owner and her heart skipped a little beat. He had perfect dark hair, olive skin that looked incredibly smooth and the darkest, most intense eyes she had ever seen. He sat in a large leather arm chair, his hands resting casually on his thighs. The expensive looking three piece suit just added to his suave charm.
Bull sighed and gestured toward the other man “Benny Colon, our in house council.”
Liv swallowed down her nerves and offered him her hand, acutely aware that she wished she’d repainted her nails. “Hello, lovely to meet you.”
He took her hand in both of his and gave her a firm handshake, his fingers giving her a reassuring squeeze. “The pleasure is mine.”
Liv couldn’t fight the dusky pink flush that threatened to burn her cheeks, and turned her face away quickly.
“So,” Bull started, regaining her attention. His eyes flicked momentarily between her and Benny, Olivia could almost see the cogs turning in his head as the corner of his mouth lifted almost imperceptibly. “How much do you know about our current case? I gather it’s not reached the news in good ol’ England?”
“It hasn’t, but I sent Liv a file on the case to look over on her flight. It laid out all the details we have for her.” Marissa said, offering her one of the spare chairs in the room.
Olivia shook her head, deciding to remain standing after such a long flight. Between plane seats and the three cabs she’d had to take since she left home yesterday, she had begun to lose the feeling in her backside. “Thank you, but I feel like I’ve been sitting for a lifetime, I need to get my blood flowing again.” She did however, place her work back on the ground and crouched next to it, retrieving out the folder she had been sent. “Let’s see … rich boy turns 18, uses daddy’s money to host a big bash on board his, or daddy’s yacht. Does what teenage boys do, and has sex with a pretty girl, only problem is, the pretty girl is found strangled and washed up on the beach …”
Benny nodded his head appreciatively, and smiled at her “Well, that was concise.” Olivia couldn’t help but smile back, his dimples were one of the most attractive things she thought she’d ever seen.
“Thank you, Mr Colon”
He held his hands up and continued to smile at her reassuringly, his chocolate eyes sparkling with mirth. “Benny, please.”
“Benny” she repeated, nodding and smiling back. She held his gaze for a couple of seconds before directing her attention back to her temporary boss. “So what would you like me to do? If you have a lab I can probably run all manner of tests, I could even pull a tox screen if you feel it’s needed, my inhouse results might not be as clear cut as a designated tox lab, but I can do my best. I can test for outside or internal factors as well, judge whether anything triggered her body to shut down prior to the strangulation …” Bull just sat back, watching her with an amused look on his face, twirling his glasses around in one hand. Olivia looked back to Marissa, “I’m doing it again, aren’t I?” Marissa laughed gently and nodded, reaching out to pat her hand.
“You tend to over think when in unfamiliar situations. You speak whatever is going through your head in those moments, like you can’t control it. It’s a nervous tick. And here you are, in a new building, in a different country, surrounded by people you don’t know. Your brain is going into overdrive.” Bull analysed, looking smug.
“In other words.” Benny soothed, standing up from his chair, “You’re nervous and that’s ok. We’ll have you settled in before you know it.” He came to stand beside her and placed a large, warm hand on her shoulder blade. “I need to get down to mock court to go over the opening statement, let me show you to your lab, you can get some peace in there.” He smelled amazing, and with every subtle movement a waft of expensive came her way. Sandalwood, leather and citrus assaulted her nose.
“A good plan.” Bull also got his feet, nodding at her. “We’ve manged to secure some blood and hair samples if you could look them over for any abnormalities or anomalies.”
“Sure” Olivia smiled reassuringly, and nodded, blood and hair follicle analysis were easy, her bread and butter back home. She went to pick up her work bag, but as her fingers closed around the handle warm, soft fingers collided with hers. Benny, being the gentleman Liv could already tell he was, picked up her bag for her and gestured for her to leave the room, him following closely behind her.
Marissa watched the pair go, a contented look on her face. With a little sigh she turned to her boss who was also watching his old friend and new employee leave.
“She seems sweet. If a little nervous.”
Bull nodded and put his glasses on to look through some paperwork on his desk.
“She’ll warm up. Benny will look after her.”
“But Benny can be a bit … aloof … sometimes …”
“When have I ever given you cause not to trust me, Marissa? Believe me, she’ll have him eating from her palms in no time.” Marissa scrunched her nose up and looked at Bull. “Figuratively speaking.”

Keita, Izumi, Haruka, and Tadakatsu!
Thank you, P! I’ll do Keita first and then put the rest in a Read More, since these posts got a bit longer than I expected. And since I love all four of these babs, I’m sure it won’t be any shorter.
Keita Iijima
How I feel about this character
Considering he’s my url... I think he’s a good lil bean.  We don’t really know THAT much about him in canon, other than the fact he likes coke (the drink), he’s a coward and he actually has enough trust in Shinji and Yutaka to reach out to them during the Program, even continuing to approach them when Shinji has a gun and Keita doesn’t have a way of defending himself. Because even though he’s a coward, he had to take a chance on the people he considers to be his friends, to accept him and invite him along. He was scared and desperate and he just didn’t want to be alone anymore. Well, we all know how that ended, ey. A LOT of my Keita feels are pure crack and I HC him as an annoying dumbass who makes lots of mistakes but ultimately never has bad intentions. But I also have these real Keita feels about how he died feeling lonely and rejected and confused, turned away by the people he thought he could trust and who he didn’t know didn’t trust him in return.
Short summary: I love Keita.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Keita/Shinji
I won’t be taking any questions at this time... Ok, look, Shinji/Keita has always been a bit of a crack ship for me. Mostly based on the fact that I HC Keita as being a big Shinji fanboy who just follows him around and is totally oblivious to the fact that Shinji is not that into it. I think he, someone obviously not that cool (no offence, Keita), would admire Shinji’s coolness and confidence and all his abilities in sports and tech etc. Shinji on the other hand, especially after what happened that day they went to the movies + comic book store, would just constantly will Keita to go away. I think Shinji’s bitterness and grudge about what happened is also so out of proportion, he even tells himself he knows Keita is a coward and shouldn’t expect his help, but he still gets all cold and pushes him away after. You totally know he would ghost his ass compeltely if they didn’t have mutual friends. And Keita is just in his own little “Lala Shinji is awesome”-world and doesn’t even notice. There’s something about how I HC their dynamic and a one-sided crush from Keita that I just love.
Keita/Yuka
This one is purely fan-based due to the dynamic they developed in an old RP, but which I could see working in canon as well, thanks to both of them (at least how I see Keita) are pretty upbeat and positive and kinda dumbasses. I can’t see them get super serious but I think they could be tons of fun and get up to some weird and annoying pranks.
Keita/Yumiko Back in 2004, when I was 12, I read BR for the first time and I drew my own little manga centered around Keita in the Program. In my cartoon, Yumiko was his ex, and he was looking for her. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. I stand by it. That’s all.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Keita/Yutaka The little nerds of the Neutral Boys group. I think they both joke around a lot and don’t get serious until things are really fucking serious. In the novel, Yutaka was shocked that Shinji didn’t trust Keita and refused to let him join them, and after Shinji kills Keita, it’s when Yutaka starts to question everything about Shinji’s motivations with him too. Not knowing the history with Shinji/Keita, Yutaka himself had obviously considered Keita someone trustworthy, and a good friend. And where as in the novel, Yutaka kinda questions why someone as cool as Shinji would hang out with him, you know he would never have to question this with Keita... Who isn’t cool at all, lets be real.
·         My unpopular opinion about this character
I’ve seen a lot of people villainising Keita and I just don’t get it. Not necessarily disagreeing with whether or not Shinji was right to shoot him, because I can see where in a matter of life and death, Shinji would have just not be able to risk it (not only his life, but Yutaka’s too). But in the end, Shinji even knows he made a mistake when they find no other weapon on Keita, so I think it’s weird when the fanbase paint Keita as this asshole. Yeah Keita was wrong not to get help for Shinji and he was possibly even more wrong for lying about it after, but you know what… He’s a coward. He chooses the easy way out, that lazy bastard. Good for him. I still think if Shinji was that bothered by the whole situation, then he should have talked to him about it instead of pretending everything was fine only to shoot him straight in the heart.
So I guess my unpopular opinion is… I know Keita is a dumb coward but I love him anyway and Shinji could have handled it better too.
·         One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Again, not dying would be great. I would love it if Shinji had heard him out and actually let him prove that he didn’t have any other weapon. Though I’m sure if Shinji had let him join them, Keita would have found some great way to fuck up the plan later anyway, bless.
. Izumi Kanai
How I feel about this character
My other baby. Izumi has zero lines and all we know about her is told to us by others, and to be honest, it was Yutaka who first made me fall in love with her, with his depiction of what “made her so great,” as Shinji asked. I love that she’s rich and from a good family but still not stuck up. I love that she easily cries when fucking up, like at the relay, because same. I love how she laughs until she cries when listening to Yuka’s jokes, showing she has a great sense of humour and isn’t afraid of showing her own emotions in public (whether it’s laughing or crying). Finally,  although I had been a fan of Izumi for 10 + years by the time Angel’s Border was released, she really dug her nails deeper into my heart by being one of the two girls who went to Chisato’s brother’s funeral. It says even more about her considering Chisato’s brother was suspected of taking part in a rebel group and this is why he killed himself, while Izumi’s father is the town official and would probably definitely disapprove of her support of that. So she’s clearly also a caring and supportive friend.
I guess I kinda like the mystery of us never seeing anything from her POV, where we have to put together the pieces of information from the others. It also leaves for a lot of blanks to be filled by headcanons and personal interpretations. Which I love.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Izumi/Mitsuru
Who doesn’t love a bad boy/good girl? I know I do. Mitsuru finding Izumi’s body and being so startled by It (in the Norwegian translation he kinda stutteres “S-She, Kanai…”, and it’s adorable), as he notes to himself how she was kind of cute but he would never be stupid enough to develop a crush on her, considering their different backgrounds… Aah. To me it always sounded like he already HAD been “stupid enough” to develop a crush on her. And considering Izumi, despite being rich, is also described as being down to earth, I don’t think she would find it stupid at all. We know Mitsuru is also described by Yumiko as not being that bad of a guy and always being kind to girls, so I just picture him holding doors open and helping girls carry things around if needed, like a gentleman. How could Izumi not fall for that? The bad boy with a heart of gold is just irresistible.
Izumi/Toshinori
Another pairing that’s developed in the fandom and is probably more of an in-joke, but they are the two rich kids in the class ( don’t count Kiriyama as a person, sorry), and whilst Toshinori is super judgemental and dismissive of all his “vulgar classmates”, I really like the idea of Izumi’s class and family being factors in how he can’t judge her the same way, but then her kindness also touches something in his cold heart, opening up the possibility that he could love something other than his violin and salt… And it would literally be like The Princess and the Frog. That’s just too good.
Izumi/Yutaka
I think there was a point in my life where I actually shipped this harder than Izumi/Mitsuru, so I still want to pay my respects to it. Like mentioned, Yutaka’s speech about Izumi is what made me first fall in love  with her too. He is so committed to her, her death is what leaves him with no doubt that he wants to give his all and fight against Sakimochi and the government, despite the very high probability that he would die in the process. The way he talks about her is so touching, and like Shinji said, he could probably be a poet rather than a comedian. Again, quoting Shinji, I think Izumi would really appreciate knowing someone cared for her as much as Yutaka did. He’s so sweet and they’d definitely be super cute together
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Izumi/Yukie+Chisato+Yuka
I could probably have just said Izumi and the Neutral girls, but these are the three I consider she would be the closest to.I kinda HC Izumi/Yukie as having a similar background, where as Yukie isn’t mentioned as being rich in the same way, her father still works for the government. Yukie clearly presses back against what her father/the government are doing, and I think down-to-earth Izumi would have similar problems with it. I think these two + Chisato are the girliest ones of the group and would enjoy shopping trips and late night sleepovers, where they gossip all night (Yuka can join for this, you know that girl loves the tea!!) Chisato is also the one girl who mentions Izumi’s death (thanks girl, you’re a real G), and the whole thing about Izumi going to her brother’s funeral to support her, that I’ve already talked about. As for Yuka, she clearly knows how to make Izumi laugh, and that’s one of the most important parts of a friendship. I think they could be very silly and cute together.  I also think  (I base this a little bit on the manga and some of the lines there), that these four girls are the most “boy-crazy”  and could bond together over rating boy’s butts.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I know she has zero lines and she’s still my favourite female character. So…  That in itself is probably “unpopular” in the sense that it’s not exactly embraced by the fandom.
I guess I don’t like when Izumi is portrayed in some fanfics as being very snooty, despite one of the five things or so we know about her is that she’s NOT stuck up
.I also don’t like the movie having her as a “bad girl” or the manga totally dismissing her and having damn Fumiyo be Yutaka’s crush instead. The other mediums did her dirty.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I think every AU I have In my head, involves Mitsuru finding Izumi alive and teaming up with her, giving them a chance to really get to know each other and you know… Fall more in love and express their feelings. And survive idk that’d be good too
.And any mention by the neutral girls in the novel that “Our friend Izumi died first, that’s sad, huh”, would have been welcome. Thanks Chisato for doing a little justice in AB.
I’m also still hopeful for like a BR prequel novel or manga focusing on all the different groups that could give Izumi some lines. I know it’s been 21 years since the novel was released, but AB was released 14 years later, so there’s still hope.
Haruka Tanizawa
How I feel about this character
Haruka has always been one of my favourite characters (in BR I love so many of the kids, so “favourite” means top 15). Her bravery and loyalty is really admirable and she really is part of keeping the team together in the Lighthouse. Despite being a little tough and clearly a little dis-trusting of boys, Haruka is still kind and caring, as she checks on Yuko in the lighthouse and tries to reassure her about the whole Shuya situation. She’s clearly a great friend who will always stick up for those she’s close to. AB adds another dimension to her character with her realizing recently she’s a lesbian and in love with her best friend which is just… Ouch. My heart.
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Haruka/Yukie I mentioned in my Yukie-post that I have a hard time seeing Yukie as bi/gay, but I still heavily ship this. I guess I just want Haruka to be happy, right? Even before AB was released, I always read Haruka as a lesbian in love with Yukie, which I know a lot of the fandom did.  Falling in love with your best friend is such a lesbian stereotype in media, but I’m here for it every time. The fact that Haruka really finds herself disgusting because of how she feels about Yukie now, is just heartbreaking. She mentions trying to pull away and avoid physical touches etc, but it’s clearly hard for her to pull away at all, as the girls have been best friends since Elementary school. In AB, Haruka also mentions how she could never live if it means Yukie has to be the one to die. Her love for Yukie, both romantically and platonically, Is just so strong.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Haruka/Yukie See everything I wrote about them already except remove the romantic elements, I guess? They make a great team, both on the volleyball court and off. Even their platonic love for each other (Yukie’s love for Haruka, I guess) is so strong and they find strength in each other, going back to the school together to gather their friends, despite the risks. They’re both very brave and even braver together. Strength in numbers and all that.
Haruka/Chisato I just imagine them looking so cute together when they’re cooking, described as looking as a couple because of Haru being so tall with short hair and Chisato being so short with long hair. Because of how much physically bigger and probably stronger Haruka is than her, I totally see her as overprotective of her smaller friend. I can see her just listening to Chisato go on about her crush on Shinji and be horrified that their innocent friend would risk getting hurt by a player like this. I guess I in general picture Haruka as protective of all her friends.
My unpopular opinion about this character
I’m not sure if this is unpopular but I don’t see it mentioned that much, but I HC Haruka as having experienced some sort of assault/abuse by a boy/man in the past. Possibly because of the manga stating that Haruka “knows boys do bad things”.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I obviously (this is gonna come as a shock I KNOW) wish she and Yukie would have succeeded in calming down Satomi and Chisato before the whole thing escalated like it did. I’d be so happy if the girls made it out of the lighthouse with Shuya to meet up with Noriko and Shogo, even if the happiness probably wouldn’t laugh.
And I’d like for her to have told Yukie just how she feels about her. I know Yukie would have been completely supportive and loved her no matter what, and I wish Haruka got that confirmation that she’s not abnormal or disgusting, and that it doesn’t change anything in their friendship.
Tadakatsu Hatagami
How I feel about this character
I love suspicious, grumpy, level-headed (until he gets horny) Katsu. He’s another one of my favourites. I like how he has friends from so many different group, like he’s a jock so he hangs out with Niida and Oki, but he’s also childhood friends with Yuka, and he’s still friends with his Elementary school friend, little nerd Yuichiro…  It means he must be pretty versatile to get along with such different groups of people. And I find it a little hilarious how he let his strict mom keep him from being friends with Shuya after he started playing rock music. What a loser.
I find it really sweet how Katsu and Yuichiro sat down and decided to find other people and try to find a plan on how to escape once they met up in the Program (but failed to find any plan because they’re both just not that creative I guess??), but it’s admirable that despite being a suspicious person (“misanthropic” as Yuichiro described him), he still wanted to trust people enough so that they could help each other out of the situation. He seems all grumpy and hard when Mitsuko joins them but that’s because he doesn’t trust her (wonder why) but he’s still a nice guy with good intentions and a protective friend!
All the people I ship romantically with this character
Tadakatsu/Yuka Yes, I jumped on this bandwagon immediately after reading AB. Yuka referring to him with his nickname “Katsu” and being in tears because the girls just let him run off alone, since they decided not to let any boys join their group… Seeing Yuka, happy-go-lucky, positive, jokster Yuka, cry like that because she had to let her neighbour/childhood friend go off alone, is just heartbreaking. And then knowing she had to hear about his death later… I wish we had gotten more of her reaction to that. Since I see Tadakatsu as pretty serious and kinda a grump, it makes this pairing even more appealing to me, as they’re so different.
My non-romantic OTP for this character
Tadakatsu/Yuichiro Again, this is another case of the “opposites attract”, with Tadakatsu being a grumpy jock, and Yuichiro being a naïve, good-hearted otaku. Where Tadakatsu is suspicious and judgemental, Yuichiro is open-minded and wants to see the good in everyone, even someone with a bad reputation like Mitsuko. What makes me really like their friendship is that even though one might think Tadakatsu would be the domineering one, he actually lets Yuichiro call a lot of the shots, like letting Mitsuko join them in the first place, convincing Tadakatsu Mitsuko must trust them, and then also going along with it when Yuichiro freed her hands from the restraints later. Yuichiro clearly helps him keep calm in the stressful situation, and they have such trust in each other. It makes Yuichiro’s death by his hand so tragic, too.
My unpopular opinion about this character
He should have shot that bitch when he had the chance.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
He should have shot that bitch when he had the chance.
Honestly, he did so well, he had a healthy amount of suspicion, he was RIGHT to be suspicious... And then Mitsuko lifts her skirt up a little and he’s like “Oh, yeah, actually, let me just drop my gun and go get laid! Wohoo!”. I’m so annoyed with him! Dumbass! I get he’s a horny teenage boy but did his brain just completly turn off when the rest of him got turned on?! So yeah, I wish. 1) He would have shot Mitsuko right away. 2) If not, at least don’t let her SEDUCE YOU. 3) When given the chance to shoot her again, I wish he had succeeded, instead of Yuichiro being the sweetheart he is and taking the bullet. Oh and I guess I would have liked to see him re-unite with Yuka, or at least see her outside the school or... Something.

Future Ficlet: All You Need is Love...and Coffee
Wow, tonight’s episode was brutal.  Between the painful Olicity separation in present time and the lack of Olicity in the dark future of the flash-forwards, we aren’t seeing any of the happy right now.  There seems to be no hope. Our heroes’ sacrifices were all in vain.  Basically, everything sucks.
As kismet would have it, a couple of weeks ago, I shared a fun little head canon with @allimariexf and @hope-for-olicity and they both encouraged me to ‘write the thing.’  I’ve had a terrible case of writer’s block for quite some time (meaning I have a gazillion story ideas and a ton of WIPs that are unfinished).  I expected this one to end up dormant in my drafts as well.  But after tonight’s episode, I felt the need to finish it because we (and Olicity, of course) deserve a little hope and happy.  Set two years in the future, the premise of this little fluffy ficlet is that Felicity needs an assistant but she has particular criteria ;)
Tumblr media
This should have been the easy part.
After months of enticing investors, obtaining the proper licenses and permits, all the legal mumbo jumbo, and locating the perfect office space, hiring an executive assistant is going to be the breaking point where she finally loses her sanity.
Which completely defeats the purpose of trying to find someone to help her in the first place.
She has been doing fine on her own, thriving actually, since she decided it was time to recommence building a tech company from the ground up, sans Curtis this time.   This venture, for better or worse, will be all hers.  Her vision.  Her name. Her legacy.
Despite her initial apprehension at that thought, she has a clarity and confidence in her mission and goals that has propelled her forward at a pace she couldn’t have imagined.  So far, choosing which of her many prototypes she wanted to launch first has been her biggest challenge.
Until now.
She had narrowed down the stack of over 100 applications to the eight most qualified for the position, and began the interview process at 7:00 this morning.
The first one had been punctual, neat, and lacking any sort of personality whatsoever.
The second one arrived twenty minutes late and then interrupted Felicity mid-interview to take a non-emergency personal call on her cell phone.
The third one tapped her super long artificial nails on the edge of Felicity’s desk the entire time and included ‘loud typer’ when asked how her current co-workers would describe her.
The fourth one was a chaotic whirlwind who overshared details of his personal life on every single question.
Maybe he just had too much caffeine in his system. Or maybe she doesn’t have enough.
Coffee.  She needs coffee.  Her next interviewee isn’t scheduled to come in for another hour, so she takes the reprieve to just lay her head down on her desk for a moment in order to gather up the energy she needs to make the trek down the block for her caffeine fix.
“One vanilla soy latte, extra sugar, extra cinnamon, extra whip cream.”
Oh yes.  That’s exactly what she wants.  Why she is thinking it in Oliver’s voice, she doesn’t know.  Her coffee daydream is so vivid, she can even smell the soothing notes of vanilla with hints of sweet cinnamon spice wafting through the air. Mmmmmmmm.
“Felicity….honey, are you okay?”  Oliver’s voice again.  She slowly lifts her head and sees her husband standing on the other side of her desk, holding a large cup emblazoned with the logo of her favorite java joint and her name scrawled across it in black marker.
“I am now,” she practically purrs as he hands over her treasured treat.  After taking a deep inhale and a long swallow, she blissfully smiles at him.  “It’s perfect.  You’re perfect.”  Suddenly jumping up out of her chair, she shares the revelation brought on by the jolt of caffeine in her system. “Oh!  I have a great idea!  You should apply to be my EA.”
Oliver chuffs out a laugh.  “Because I brought you coffee?  Your standards must be pretty low.”
“Worried you couldn’t cut it, Mr. Queen?” she asks, arching an eyebrow in challenge.
“I think my time served as Mayor proves otherwise,” he retorts with an air of gravitas but mimics her gesture, silently letting her know that he enjoys her teasing him and is willing to play along.
She shakes her head.  “Nope, not helpful.  You couldn’t even get me a break on my taxes when you were the mayor.  What are your current qualifications?”
He ponders the inquiry for a moment before responding proudly, “I’m the head chef at Chez Queen.”
She rolls her eyes at Oliver’s corny moniker for their kitchen but gives him an encouraging smile.  “Oh yeah, I’ve eaten there a few times.  The food is magnificent.  But do you have any business experience?”
His expression goes from proud to smug.  “As a matter of fact, I do.  I was formerly the CEO of Queen Consolidated.”
She takes another swig of coffee and checks an incoming text on her cell phone before reminding him, “I happen to have first-hand knowledge you wouldn’t have made it a week without your super smart and highly efficient EA.”
“That’s true,” he concedes with a grin, “though on the downside, she only brought me coffee one time.  One”, he repeats, taking her coffee and phone and setting them off to the side. Placing his palms flat on the edge of her desk, he leans in closer, a visible twinkle in his vivid blue eyes.   “I think she actually broke our coffeemaker.  Violently,” he teases in a conspiratorial whisper.
Mirroring her husband, she leans in over the desk until their noses are almost touching.  “A little violence doesn’t scare you, does it, Mr. Queen?”  She allows her gaze to run down the length of his torso, visibly appreciating the definition of his biceps that his jacket cannot conceal. “You look like you could handle yourself just fine.”
“I like to stay in shape.”  He feigns modesty but she knows her husband and can recognize that look in his eyes. “Some cardio, free weights, martial arts, salmon ladder…”
“That’s so hot” she blurts out, temporarily slipping out of character as her brain produces an amazing visual of sweaty and shirtless Oliver making his way up the salmon ladder.  Will there ever be a day when that doesn’t turn her on?  Probably not, and judging from the self-satisfied smirk on his face, he mentioned it on purpose just to get that very reaction out of her.   Determined to get back on track, she rephrases, “I mean, that sounds interesting.”  She decides a change of topic would be helpful to give her an advantage in their little game.  “Computer skills?”
She immediately regrets that question when Oliver gives her a feral smile that makes her weak in the knees.  Lowering his voice to the same octave he uses when he is dressed in green leather, he divulges, “I’ve hacked a federal prison network.”
Guh, game over.  In all her years with Oliver, that is the sexiest thing he has ever said. She quickly makes her way around the desk and invades his personal space. “Seems like you’re a man of many talents,” she coos appreciatively, latching onto his arm and nuzzling her face into the sleeve of his jacket to breathe in the scent that is uniquely Oliver.
“My wife taught me a thing or two,” he boasts, turning so they are face-to-face and he can wrap his arms around her.
Her hands instinctively move from his arm to his chest, resting over his heart.  “She must be an amazing woman.”
Oliver nods in agreement, his nose nuzzling hers. “She is.  She’s the best.”
“I know you’re just saying that to get husband points and its working,” she acknowledges affectionately, her hand caressing the stubble on his jaw.   He tilts his head into her palm like a contented cat and she takes the opportunity to kiss him like she wanted to since she saw him in front of her desk, whether it was five minutes ago with coffee or nine years ago with a bullet-ridden laptop.
Oliver moans and deepens the kiss, the fervent strokes of his tongue making her long for more.  “Okay, you’re hired,” she pants, breaking the kiss when her need for air temporarily overcomes her need for Oliver.  “Smoak Tech is a start-up so your health care package consists of me patching you up if you are injured and I’m sure we can work out some type of compensation for your time and skills,” provocatively shifting her body against his and feeling his obvious interest through his jeans and her skirt.  Two soft kisses and one firm rotation of his hips later, she is internally debating the sturdiness of her desk and whether they have time for her to show him exactly what she means by ‘compensation’ before her next appointment shows up.
“That’s a very tempting offer, Ms. Smoak” he murmurs into her hair as his hand travels down her back and immediately finds its usual place on the curve of her shapely ass, pulling her impossibly closer, “but I’m afraid my current employer really needs me right now and I just can’t bear to leave her,” his free hand gesturing to the stroller where their daughter slumbers peacefully.
Felicity sighs, pure happiness filling her heart and clearing her mind as she rests her head on her husband’s chest to gaze lovingly at the chubby-cheeked, perfect amalgamation of her and Oliver they brought into the world just four short months ago.   “Sounds like she has you wrapped around her little finger.”
Oliver rests his chin on the top of her head and she can hear the love and contentment in his voice when he whispers in her hair, “From the very first moment I met her.  She takes after her mother that way.”
A/N:  Thank you for reading!  I hope this helped to soothe the sting of all the angst.  Queen family feels FTW.  William was not in this fic because at that time of day, he should be in school and also I didn’t want to traumatize him any further with Olicity’s blatant flirty flirt.  The poor kid has seen enough already lol.
Huge thanks and virtual hugs to @allimariexf and @hope-for-olicity for all the fun conversations and being all around wonderful :)
Oliver’s ‘current employer’ ;)

Welcome, Y’all
I just hate those bumper stickers popping up around Austin that say “Don’t Move Here.” Many a Facebook post expresses the same.
I get the joke, but it’s just not funny.
This is a post about the future of Austin. It’s a post about Mayor Adler and his challenger this Fall, Laura Morrison. It’s a post in some ways about about the inevitable. It’s a little bit about Amazon, and it’s a lot about making sure Austin’s continued rise benefits everyone.
“We can only say the state of our city is strong if we are affirmatively building a future in which we preserve the soul and spirit of Austin.”
—Mayor Steve Adler
Our problems aren’t any one person’s fault, and no more the fault of a newcomer than a decades-long veteran.
If we ever stop being hospitable, we really will have lost the soul and the spirit of Austin. If we ever stop being a refuge and a block party and a march for good over evil, we really will have lost the soul and the spirit of Austin.
If we ever stop using our disposable income to vote for how we want the city to be, we will have lost the soul and spirit of Austin.
Instead of saying “Don’t Move Here” I’d rather we say what so many of you said to me when I first showed up, 12 years ago.
Welcome, Y’all.
. . .
In fact, when we say “Don’t Move Here,” we start sounding a lot like the anti-immigration nationalists we so strongly oppose on the national stage. I’m flabbergasted by my liberal brethren regularly these days, and this is just one reason why.
Unless we are going to build a Trump-like wall around Austin, we have got to be more solution minded.
I’m not particularly interested in hearing more from complain-y do-nothings, and least of all Laura Morrison, who already had her shot at addressing these issues in her first stint on Council from 2008-2015.
During her tenure, the issues in play were exactly the same as they are today, and the progress made was to my mind and many others’ deeply unsatisfactory.
Folks like Morrison can be eloquent when talking about Austin’s problems, but remain woefully short on ideas and action.
Every single one of Morrison’s answers to a difficult question — about transportation, about economic segregation, about homelessness, about CODENext — ends up with a non-committal  “we have to strike a balance” or “we have to look at that closely” or “I think there are ways that we can grow, without doing that” — to which no specifics nor any follow-up is ever offered.
. . .
The one thing Morrison did do?
She led the anti-Prop1 PAC “Our City, Our Safety, Our Choice,” which fronted the fight against Uber and Lyft in Austin.
The net result? The Texas State Legislature overruled us and Uber and Lyft are back, more free to operate than ever before.
When meeting with technology companies and their workers, Morrison is likely to bring up her professional training as an engineer at her time at Lockheed. Don’t take the bait.
In case you have erased all memory of the ugly battle with Uber and Lyft from your mind, now is the time to recall:
Mayor Steve Adler had actually negotiated a signed, precedent-setting MOU from both Uber and Lyft that extracted important concessions from both companies, most important of all related to ensuring both driver and passenger safety. Tax revenue and data sharing were the other key components.
What caused that fight in the first place was later obscured: the rideshare-related numbers for rape and sexual assault had indisputably risen according to SAFE and our own Police Department. Folks predictably cast doubt on those numbers but they held up under scrutiny.
The philosophical argument about the utility and efficacy of fingerprinting drivers was less compelling to me personally and for many of you; regardless, Adler had solved this also. His innovative Thumbs Up! ordinance passed; a corresponding 100% voluntary identification program was to use market dynamics to incentivize validation instead of requiring it.
Alas, Council rejected the MOU, afraid to act. At the time it was much more popular to put the vote to the people, avoiding what had become a political third rail for everyone.
Uber and Lyft of course did themselves zero favors with their brash tone and dishonest backroom dealings. But I and many others were strongly in search of a workable compromise, instead of a temporary moral victory, followed by swift rebuke.
. . .
It’s really easy to fear-monger like Morrison does. “Everything’s going to change,” she loves to say. Change in Austin is not only not new, it has been constant for more than 100 years.
Morrison never goes so far as to claim she can prevent change, but it’s clear she intends to slow it down as much as possible. In the process of making her argument, Morrison enlists the typical boogeymen: real estate developers, Californians, technology companies, and businesspeople generally.
The funny thing is that those constituencies are forwarding some of the most progressive initiatives in the city, driven by a race to recruit, train, and develop talent (more on this later).
The scariest speaking point in Morrison’s arsenal? “It's time for a leader whose priority is the people who live here right now,” she often says.
The Chronicle’s Michael King was quick to pick up on this rhetoric in his interview of Morrison this past January when she first announced:
“[You make] a fairly sharp distinction between the people that live here “now” and the people that are going to live here. Does that mean people who have lived here for five years? For 10 years? Does the door slam tomorrow?”
Morrison’s response was typical: “Nobody has the power for the door to slam – if somebody had the power, would that be good? Probably not.”
Probably not?
It gets better. She continues: “the fact of the matter is, we need to make sure that we don’t turn people into losers.”
To me that’s code for protectionism, not egalitarianism. Morrison isn’t worried about the people who are already hurting. She’s looking out for folks who are not losing now, but are worried they will start losing soon.
Remind you of anyone else’s rhetoric? Shall we just say it aloud together? Is it really time to Make Austin Great Again?
I think that’s precisely how Morrison’s campaign intends to have a fighting chance against Adler.
Invoke a particular way of life, romanticize it, and protect it. Hat-tip the little guy, and act like the incumbent has a swamp worth draining. Get elected. Start governing like it’s 1980, or earlier. Most importantly try like hell to give your NIMBY old guard donors their Austin back, come hell or high water.
. . .
Here is why I am still all-in on Steve Adler and why I think you should join me by giving whatever you can to his re-election campaign.
Steve is a convener who gets things done, but who also goes out of his way to make sure others get all the credit.
Steve is not a career politician. He’s a successful lawyer and committed philanthropist who isn’t worried about optics. He isn’t afraid to stand up to Abbot, Paxton, Sessions and Trump.
In recognition of this fact and more, the Anti-Defamation League gave Steve Adler and Diane Land the Audrey Maislin Humanitarian Award last year, which is a huge honor not to be taken lightly. It’s not just another one of these nice gala things that people in power are given to curry favor.
Neither Steve nor Diane ever hesitates to speak truth to power, and it shows. They have demonstrated time and time again that they are fierce advocates for the oppressed, the segregated, the discriminated, and the powerless. Their record in these matters is substantial.
In times like these our Mayor must be incredibly effective in affairs both foreign and domestic, so to speak. There’s no one else in Austin right now who can pull off that combination without sacrificing one endeavor for the other.
And I do love it when Steve gets his lawyer on.
Whether he is fighting SB4 tooth and nail, collaborating with Judge Eckhardt to protect Austin’s right to be a sanctuary city, or leading more than 50 other cities to join us in recommitting to the Paris Climate Accord, Adler makes me proud to live in Austin and to be part of these precedent-setting fights.
Steve’s “worst” flaw is trying to pull the sword from the stone on tough issues that no one else has the courage to touch.
I can live with that.
. . .
Sidebar: here’s a good related read in case you missed it: “Why the nation’s mayors are watching Austin Mayor Steve Adler” in the Statesman.
Accomplishments: here are the Mayor’s 2017 accomplishments. It’s a big list.
Priorities: Adler’s priorities for 2018 are here.
Donate: here’s where you can give to Adler’s campaign.
. . .
The hands down, no question, most alarming thing about Austin is that we are #1 in the nation in income inequality. That’s not a good list to be atop of.
Every other issue in my mind takes a back seat to this one.
Not nearly everyone is benefiting from Austin’s growth and prosperity. Our community is still suffering from the mind-bending injustice our leaders perpetrated way back in 1928.
And no, keeping companies like Amazon out of Austin isn’t going to help our #1 problem.
The jobs and the growth and the money that companies like Amazon and Apple and Oracle bring are not at all the problem. Folks worry about what Amazon would do to traffic, or affordability. The actual problem with these big new HQ projects is routing and bridging the opportunities they comprise to everyone in the city.
I know a lot of people who’d love to wade through traffic for an $85K yearly salary. I was at Huston-Tillotson University a few weeks ago with President Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette. Their students’ desire for tech jobs is consistent and intense, across a dozen majors.
A fix will not happen overnight, but again, addressing Austin’s intense, perverse, historic economic segregation must be our overriding priority.
Good news: our newly-minted Master Workforce Development Plan is strong, and can serve as a reliable template for decades to come.
The Austin Monitor captures the plan’s purpose and progress in a few succinct paragraphs, for those of you who may have missed it:
At last week’s City Council meeting, a procedural public hearing paved the way for the formal addition next month of the Master Community Workforce Plan to Imagine Austin, which is the city’s plan for the next 30 years. But it’s the work being done with high-profile employers like Samsung and job training providers such as Austin Community College taking place quietly in the background that proponents of the plan expect will soon produce more applicants for positions that employers said they’re having trouble filling. The workforce plan has a stated goal of creating 60,000 middle-skill jobs in three high-growth sectors – health care, information technology and advanced manufacturing – as well as lifting 10,000 residents out of lower-class income brackets. Since the plan was unveiled last June, employers in similar industries have been courted to participate in ongoing sessions to identify the needed soft skills and common challenges that make it difficult for them to find and retain new employees. Their findings are then presented to representatives from Austin Community College, Goodwill of Central Texas and Capital IDEA to help those organizations tailor their existing job training programs to better suit the needs of the market. Thus far those workforce development programs are being funded in part with $660,000 in workforce data management contracts Workforce Solutions has secured with the city and Travis County, which includes some contributions from Google and JP Morgan Chase. Ongoing fundraising efforts are expected to contribute as well.
If Amazon can commit to helping build these kinds of socio-economic and racial bridges both notionally and materially, I want them here. And same goes for every other company considering a move to Austin, large or small.
As Mayor Adler said in his letter to Amazon as part of our response to their RFP (full text here):
Our long-term goal in Austin is to both preserve the soul of our community and make it accessible to all – even as we excel as a community that continues to attract top talent. What new solutions and long-term investments in workforce development, affordability and mass transportation might we achieve together that would not have been possible otherwise? I firmly believe that Austin and Amazon can help each other achieve solutions to our biggest challenges. Even as you assess our community’s great assets, I ask you to look at our community’s greatest challenges as an opportunity to help craft a story for Amazon and for Austin that will be told for a long time.
. . .
Now, about those complaints. Are housing prices way up? Yes.
Are folks selling their homes and moving to cheaper enclaves in the suburbs to stave off property taxes they can’t afford? Are musicians moving to Lockhart and further, in search of more room to breathe, and make art?
Absolutely. Yes. Unequivocally. And irreversibly.
Austin’s going to need to be an active and innovative partner to Pflugerville and Round Rock and Manor and Taylor and Bastrop and Lockhart and San Marcos. Austin’s going to need to continue to aggressively invest in affordable housing. We are going to have to get together at long last and pass a new land use code, too.
Our current land use system is almost 50 years old and it’s the engine behind many — if not most — of our shared frustrations about Austin’s growth and development. Not passing a new code is not an option.
By the way, it is okay to complain about the flawed process of producing CodeNEXT, but no one should be up in arms that it’s hard to get this right. No other American city has grappled with the challenges Austin currently faces and succeeded. We are at the cutting edge in terms of defining of how modern cities can best scale.
For a super smart deep dive on this issue, read Nautilus Magazine’s “Why New York Is Just An Average City.”
We’re going to have to raise taxes too, a tough sell here in Texas, no doubt. This will most likely happen via larger and larger bond measures, with transportation and our school system remaining serially at the forefront for at least a decade. We’ve become a big American city, like it or not. It is time to acting like one too. That process starts and ends with infrastructure and education.
. . .
We are also going to have to consider community micro-bonds to fund and perhaps outright reclaim some of our struggling institutions. We are going to have to re-fund our longest-suffering school districts with private money too.
We are going to have to offer a lot more *paid* internships so that folks who don’t have “friends and family money” have equal access to personal and professional development opportunities.
We are going to have to continue being a “Kitty Hawk” for things like autonomous cars and delivery drones, no matter how uncomfortable or controversial.
We are going to have to continue fighting passionately, and standing steadfastly, as Mayor Adler consistently has, against SB4, as we are the epicenter of the nationwide fight about sanctuary cities; for the Paris Accord as a leading green, smart city; for restorative justice in our local courts and jails; for innovative, community-based policing; and against a state legislature that champions states’ right while denying incorporated Texan cities the same privilege.
And look, we have just got to vote —not just at the ballot box — but with our time, talent and money — on how we want Austin to be for years to come. Spend nights and weekends working on the causes you care about most, and spend cold hard cash on the stuff you value about this city above all else.
But of course, vote at the ballot box, too, for God’s sake. Vote again. Keep voting. Vote in the little stuff. Vote in the big stuff. Vote for fun. Vote even though it’s boring. Vote because so many others can’t.
As Beto has said more times than I can count, Texas isn’t a red state or a blue state. It’s a non-voting state.
We are actually 51st in the union in voter turnout (that number includes Puerto Rico). Sadly, Austin is no better than the rest of our fair state in this regard.
Travis County turnout dropped a whopping 50% between the 2016 Presidential election and last November. Some dropoff is always to be expected but wow. That’s pretty bad, friends.
Part of it I have to think is that folks are exhausted. No doubt others underestimate the importance and effect of local politics. But what I really think is going on is that for most people, Austin is wind at our backs, and we’re too often too busy to really notice, or care. Austin protects a lot of us from a lot of things. The mandate to vote shouldn’t be one of them.
. . .
It’s not all bad news. In fact, an incredible amount of the new has been incredibly good. It’s useful to remind ourselves of a few things.
Yes, UT is churning out high quality talent, but so are Huston-Tillotson, the Acton School of Business, St. Ed’s and ACC.
I think what Gary Keller is doing on Red River is awesome. We haven’t nearly saved live music yet, but we have the appropriate levels of panic and corresponding commitment to get the job done.
There is a ton of innovation going on in Austin around homelessness, affordable housing, tiny housing, and more. Have you visited Community First Village, which has pioneered a game changing approach to solving chronic homelessness?
Divinc is a local business incubator focused on women and people of color, and it is churning out high-quality, high-growth companies. 3/4 of the last graduating Techstars class had either a woman CEO or a woman on the executive team, no small thing sadly, in tech.
Speaking of UT, they recently hired Scott Aaronson. The university is building an incredible new quantum computing center around him, the first of its kind.
When was the last time you went to the Harry Ransom Center?  Have you been to the new Ellsworth Kelly building at the Blanton?
The New York Times called Kelly’s Austin a “temple of light” and suggested that “no contemporary artwork of this scale by a major artist has matched its creator’s initial ambitions so perfectly as Kelly’s Austin.”
In fact, the paper’s art critic M.H. Miller went so far as to conclude that:
Long the music capital of the Southwest, Austin is now also a burgeoning outpost of the tech industry. But the presence of Kelly here almost instantaneously transforms it into an important art destination, the kind of place people make pilgrimages to.
How about that?
Our new medical school and teaching hospital are out of this world. Do you know about how they have completely reimagined the clinic from the inside out? Do you know what it takes — and means — to be a Trauma 1 center?
Mueller’s a big real estate project sure, but it is also the #2 green neighborhood in the whole U.S. according to Redfin, and an exciting precedent for future development.
Do you support Urban Roots and the Sustainable Food Center? Austin Bat Cave? SAFE? UMLAUF? The Thinkery? Foundation Communities? The Trail Foundation? The Texas Civil Rights Project?
Do you know about Manor New Tech high school, where you can see the best STEM curriculum in the country firsthand?
RideAustin emerged from a nasty fight about who gets to set the rules, but it is not just solvent, but writing big checks to other Austin nonprofits every single month, $350K in total and counting.
If we are lucky, Meow Wolf makes Austin their 3rd location. Liberty Lunch is long gone and so is Las Manitas, but The Skylark is still kicking, and so is the Sahara Lounge.
Wth all the traffic and our kvetching about it, we didn’t even drop down to #2 in the 2018 best places to live. We stayed #1. Even if we slide to number 4, 5, or 6, we are in great shape compared to most cities.
Obviously, I remain optimistic. Very much so. I’d love to hear why you remain so, too.
. . .
12 years ago, when I first got to Austin, another patron at Wink one table over stood up to tell us that we were “the problem” with what Austin was quickly becoming, having overheard our table’s conversation about my recent arrival.
Which was kind of funny in and of itself because we were all at...well, Wink. On the west side of Austin, sipping fancy wine with abandon.
This conversation is not new. These sentiments are not new. Generations before us invested in the icons and institutions that make Austin what it is today, in education, the arts, business, health and more. For that they should be lauded, and hopefully their example inspires us to do the same once more.
Those generations also irresponsibly kicked the can down the road on transportation, education, systemic racism and inequality, zoning, healthcare and more. We are left today to clean up several messes we didn’t make. But let’s not spend too long lamenting  the errors of those who came before us.
I’m here for the long haul. I hope you are too. I’m glad we are talking about Amazon. I’m glad Amazon is talking about us.
I’m glad Steve Adler has an opponent. The contrast is striking, and useful because of the conversation it forces about original and modern Austin, and about complaining versus getting things done.
I’m glad we have a lot of work to do. Even better, we have the money, the talent, and the drive necessary to fix what’s broken.
I grew up in Baltimore. I love Baltimore. And it is doing better, slowly and surely. But Baltimore is not Austin, not yet anyway. Most cities would love to have our problems.
Again, we have every ability to solve what ails us. And I think we have a duty to do just that. For those of us to whom Austin has given so much, it’s time to give back.
Welcome, indeed.
P.S.
Steve has the biggest fundraising deadline of his reelection campaign on June 30th at midnight. That’s in 6 days.
Current and potential opponents will look at his report when deciding what their next moves will be. Please help out with a donation of $25, $50 or any amount that you can.
The max is up to $350 per person or $700 per couple, as allowed by our City. Click here to donate now.
Thank you!
