Carla sits on a couch in the valets’ lounge. A comforting scent permeates the air as Tino prepares a pot of cocoa, humming an unknown song. The tune is soothing, supportive, gentle, much like the Akedian valet. Tino pours cocoa into two white porcelain cups, handing a cup to Carla before sitting next to her.
“Tino, may I ask you something?”
“Of course, Miss Carla.”
“What song were you singing?”
Tino stares at his hands as they grip the sides of his cup, a blush creeping on his face. “It-it is of no consequence, Miss Carla.”
“It IS of consequence, Tino. You hum that song every time you make cocoa for me.” Carla takes one of her hands and traces gentle circles on Tino’s knuckles. “Is it something your grandmother sang to you?”
Tino gasps at Carla’s perceptiveness. He redirects his gaze from his hands to Carla’s face and smiles. “Yes. She sang this song whenever she made cocoa. Whatever my mood at the time, that song always cheered me up. Though,” Tino’s smile fades, “I only can recall the tune of the song. I no longer remember the words.” He glances back at his cup.
An idea pops into Carla’s head. But she has to act with haste to ensure Tino doesn’t find out. Feigning tiredness (and feeling quite guilty about lying), Carla tells Tino she’ll meet him back in the valets’ lounge for dinner. Carla quickly goes to the S:Rank lounge while Tino remains behind to prepare tea for Lynt. Carla pokes a Lynt-shaped bundle on a nearby couch.
“Lynt! Please wake up!” She gently shakes Lynt’s shoulder, until Lynt blearily opens his eyes and sits up. “Hmmm?”
“I don’t have much time before Tino comes here. Would you recognize a song if I hummed it to you?” Carla practically is bouncing on the balls of her feet.
“What?” Lynt blinks owlishly.
“Please! It’s a favorite song of Tino’s and I want to buy a record of it, but Tino doesn’t know the words!” Carla claps her hands beseechingly. “Maybe you’ll recognize the song if I hum it to you.”
“Oh. Ok. For Chino.” Lynt smiles and nods.
For several minutes, Carla hums different parts of the song. Lynt mews sadly, shaking his head. “I do recognize it. But it’s an older song.”
“Maybe if I sing it louder, it’ll trigger your memory.” Carla sucks in a deep breath. “🎶HMMM HMMMM, DA DA, DAAAAAA—🎶”
A book snaps shut from a chair in the corner of the lounge. Toa slams the book on a side table, sighing loudly.
“You are my Sunshine by Christina Perri. Go to Miss Brenda’s record store in town. You’ll find the record in the lullabies section. Bookshelf by the back door, third shelf from the top.” Toa picks his book back up.
Carla’s mouth hangs open in shock. “How—“
“Toa has an eidetic memory and an ear for music.” Lynt smiles and lays back down on the couch. “Thank you Toa.” Lynt closes his eyes, resuming his nap.
“How can I ever thank you enough Toa?!” Carla turns to the blue-haired prince. Toa’s eyes flicker from his book to Carla. “Don’t sing in my presence again.” Toa resumes reading, their conversation over.
Ignoring the insult, Carla races to the record store and back to the valets’ lounge. Tino arrives a short time later to the sight of Carla preparing cocoa.
“You made this for me?” Tino settles on the couch and accepts a steaming cup of chocolate from Carla.
“Well…not just that. Will you close your eyes?”
“W-why?!” Tino’s body twinges in surprise.
Carla’s fingers brush the bangs from Tino’s forehead, which is creased with alarm. “Please sweetheart. You’ll understand in a moment.”
“As you wish.” As Tino closes his eyes, he sees Carla looking at him, a tender smile on her lips. The smile renders her more charming than usual. A few moments later, he hears a long forgotten lullaby.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away
“…!” Tino gasps and opens his eyes. Memories of his grandmother flood his brain even as he is anchored to the present by Carla’s gentle gaze. The song, the cocoa, and the sight of Carla all blend together in a cocoon of comfort and light. His previous feelings of alarm are quickly replaced with a winding warmth that overwhelms and envelops him like a blanket. The song—his grandmother’s song—has been gifted to him by the woman he cherishes beyond anyone. Happiness washes over him.
Tino beckons Carla to sit next to him. He takes Carla’s hand and twines her fingers with his, squeezing tight.
“Thank you, Miss Carla.” With his other hand, he cups her cheek. “Thank you for being my sunshine—always.”
