It took Miyamura Akito approximately an hour and thirty minutes to make his biweekly supply run. An hour and thirty-five minutes if he had to get fuel. An hour and forty minutes if he stopped to pick up a few mochi donuts for her from the bakery, where he would also pick up the cat treats. He didn’t stop there every time he went into town, due to the fact that the added ten minutes came with the great emotional burden of extending his time spent away from Tennichi Isuzu. The hour and a half was just about all he could stomach before he panicked.
She had seemed a little more tired today, though. The mochi donut would make her happy. He would handle the anxiety today, the added dryness to his throat while he waited for the girl behind the counter to package the pastries. He did not want to be rude, but he so desperately wished she would move faster, with less general pleasantries.
A nod of thanks would have to be enough. Akito felt his hands shaking. He had to go home. He would have to apologize to Isuzu in sincerity for making her wait longer, even if he was sure the gesture would be enough to account for it. Not like he wasn’t in an agony of his own being away for the extra time.
Akito always smiled even before he opened the door, knowing it’d swing to reveal her beaming face and outstretched arms.
So why was she on the floor?
A breath caught in his throat, eyes unmoving from the slumped and bloodied figure only five steps away from him.
Why was she on the floor?
He felt his chest tighten, his brow crease, fingers slipping away from the pastry box as he flung himself forward with an anguished cry, one he could barely hear over the ringing in his ears.
Why was she on the floor?
He frantically grasped at the crumpled, bloody body of the existence he worshiped, hot tears spilling and cries echoing against the walls of the cabin he caged her in. “Isuzu? Isuzu. Isuzu Isuzu Isuzu Isuzu Izusu–”
Droplets of tears began speckling her skin, the moisture mixing with the still fresh blood that enveloped her. He couldn’t understand why she was on the floor. Why she was bloody, why she wouldn’t look up at him under long dark lashes with her perfect, lavender doe eyes, her soft smile and presence that was the only thing his soul needed to survive. His entire body trembled with panic, despair, all while he continued calling for his love who wouldn’t respond again. Akito buried his head into her neck, crying and crying, audible and agonized. He couldn’t live without her. He wouldn’t live without her. There was no life without her. She was his and his alone; only his. The fact someone had been here, had touched her, had robbed him of her–he couldn’t breathe. Akito could only cry out in sorrow for what felt like a lifetime before he noticed his face was no longer wet; his throat too sore to scream. If his tears had dried up, then he supposed it was time to kill himself. He’d deal with the rage of being stolen from some other time.
The smell of smoke filled his nostrils and lungs before he looked up from her corpse.
“Not yet.”
Akito blinked, rubbing Isuzu’s blood further across his face by rubbing his hand at his nose, over his mouth. The scent lingered. Who had red hair like that? And looked down at him with burning red eyes, or–brown eyes…he looked back down, willing the image away. It was gone when he looked up again.
In reality, Akito had muttered ‘not yet,’ to himself. Any figure in his vision of a person he’d been named Maejima Kyo did not exist. Not that he had much of a say over how his genuinely insurmountable grief began manifesting.
His gaze went hollow. He collected Isuzu in his arms as he rose, lips pressed against the top of her head as he had so many times before. He wouldn’t be parted from her. He silently wondered why he wasn’t killing himself yet, though. Not yet. The smoke once again captured his attention as he brought himself and her figure further into the cabin. Where she belonged. Where they belonged together. Where she was taken from him.
Akito looked over his shoulder, eye to eye with fiendish red. Or brown. He thought they were brown. He was motionless, feeling as though his blood lost all warmth alongside Isuzu’s. “Unbridled devotion destroys us. We owe it to ourselves as the faithful to establish something. Make a world for us. Make something. Be an artist. Do not let her go in vain.”
Unsure and somehow unable to care if the voice had been purely in his head, Akito studied the face in front of him. Devoted. Faithful. He’d been devoted and faithful then, too. Hadn’t he? He’d been devoted and faithful; he took her somewhere to keep her safe and by his side. Exactly what Akito had done.
Establish something. Another blink and the cultist was gone.
Still hollow in the hall, he ran his eyes over the precious treasure lifeless in his arms. He refused to let her go. And if he established something…she’d rot. She wasn’t pearlescent marble as she was upstairs. Tennichi Isuzu was flesh and blood. Flesh and blood rots. The thought brought him to his knees again, reservoirs replenished as his chest heaved in another gasping sob. He couldn’t bear it. He couldn’t bear to see her wither, and yet he could not let her go.
If he could have cremated her at home, he would have. Without question. It didn’t take much time searching through darker spaces on the internet to find an individual with the means, which came at no small price. Akito didn’t care about that. He’d wrap her gently in a blanket and carry her to his car, wishing he was merely helping her in as he had before. They’d be on the road for an hour or more on the way to the crematorium. He tried desperately not to look as he drove, while imagining her soft smile of acknowledgement back at him as opposed to the blanketed corpse he saw when he couldn’t withstand the urge.
He should have taken her out a little bit more. She was so happy.
He didn’t care to acknowledge it, but he had noticed his face no longer held any trace or remote semblance of emotion. His heart no longer had a beat. He felt lifeless, utterly lifeless in the hours since Isuzu’s death. He hated himself for taking the extra ten minutes to stop for donuts. Maybe that would have made a difference in losing her so senselessly.
Akito paid extra to remain in the room for the hours-long process. Neither him nor the mortician spoke after the payment. He felt some vague jealousy of Neo as he stood, stomach churning and face immobile while his love became ash and bone. His expression remained unchanged on the way home, even as hot tears streamed down his cheeks.
He chose a plain black urn, adding the words “dearest girl” on his own in lavender paint near the bottom when the two of them had returned to the cabin. Hands wrapping lovingly around the urn, he adjusted to the feeling, now that the treasure he refused to let go of had taken a form like this. He’d sat like that for too long on the floor of his studio, nestled against the marble statue he’d finished of her. She was everywhere in here. Every canvas had become her in some way, some form, some essence he’d captured of her spirit. For the first time since he’d stepped through his cabin door, his lips upturned in a smile, all while bringing the urn to his cheek and closing his eyes.
“I love you.”
He still had her. No matter how long it took for him to establish something, he would fulfill his promise to never let go. Someone’s promise, anyway. Sometimes he smelled the ocean when he thought of it.
“I’ll come after you soon. Just sit tight, Isuzu. And I apologize for making you wait again. I hope you can forgive me, my love. Nothing matters outside of you, yet I can’t waste a chance. Please tell me you understand that.” Bringing the smooth black marble of the urn to briefly brush against his lips, Akito knew that wasn’t the last time he’d speak as though she was still around.
He’d be spending most of his time at the computer, regardless. Holding the urn in his lap didn’t seem so outlandish, even though three cats confused and unsure of where their precious Isuzu could have probably used a little more reassurance. If his heart was able to be hurt about anything else, it’d hurt for them. Akito would take them all to the no kill shelter next time he left the cabin. Even if it took a few days.
He had a large stack of information to sift through and amass. Sleeping at the desk, only getting up when absolutely necessary…he’d finally let his own health deteriorate, so long as it meant he was one hour closer to the finish line. The lack of sleep didn’t so much in the way of warding off the visual hallucinations, as he became accustomed to them over the course of his work. He’d lightly hit his ear when they became auditory.
Wakatoshi Izumo thumbed through his poetry book, soft natured voice in his ears. “I bet it’s nice, now. I think those original buildings were all restored, since…the classiness of it is sort of the point, isn’t it? They would have kept any artifacts, too…”
Smoke again. Akito let out a sharp exhale, trying to expel the scent.
“It’s something we should have. We should have more things. We are a god.”
He glanced down to the urn in his lap. “‘We’ includes you. All of you,” he murmured to Isuzu. He continued typing, pausing only to rub at his ear. The noisiness was starting to get a little grating.
“Ah? That’s me! That’s me! And there’s that fucking pig I killed that brought me the little butcher. You want my company, too?”
“A religion needs resources,” The cultist hissed.
“Easy to blackmail them,” Akito breathed. He wasn’t so much concerned over Kyo’s idealistic aspect. The Aizawa Corporation handled a grand multitude of accounts, following the booming ventures led by Aizawa Ayano–who had done so purely on a whim to piss off his father. There was a large sway to be had with a meticulously compiled case filled with cross references to victims killed during his time at the Castle Cavalier Circus. At the circus. Their brilliant industry leader was nothing but a killer clown. He almost let out a laugh.
Ayano’s case took the majority of the time spent at his desk. Pinpointing the Sugawara estate coordinates took him no time at all. That should satisfy them, and surely, surely, it would be enough for his personal requests to be fulfilled. He was family, after all, wasn’t he?
Akito silently sobbed in an airport bathroom stall after being asked a few too many questions about the human remains he kept in his sole carry-on bag. It was the only item in the small black backpack, the one he’d designated for her. He didn’t want to hear her being called remains. Being talked about so plainly. The anguish must have crept into his eyes, which was perhaps what prompted the TSA agent into letting him off the hook about it. He’d be better prepared to declare her urn properly on the way home.
He wasn’t sure how much time had passed between her death and him sitting in the office of a woman he hadn’t cared to remember the name of. She was the salary woman regarding the Sugawara account the Wakajima company held firm on. She was talking to him, too, mouth moving though the words did not reach his ears. His hands tightened around the straps on his backpack, in reassurance to Isuzu before he started talking about the manila envelopes he handed over before their meeting began.
“The first entails coordinates to the Sugawara Estate. The Wakatoshi family reestablished it to some degree a number of years ago–I can’t say for sure how many. Though, if I took a guess, it may have been around the time they went no contact with Wakajima. Not that there was much contact before, I imagine.
“The second contains an established and traceable record of the serial killer history of Aizawa Ayano. He buried bodies in the fields and forest behind his circus. In addition to dominating the network security market, he became entangled with the Yamane who ended the persecution of the Sugawara bloodline and clan. That decree likely in turn emboldened the Wakatoshi, given they felt compelled to take back the estate. I’m aware you have a long standing vested interest in Sugawara history, so…”
He watched idly as she thumbed through the papers from both envelopes. Gave her time to skim over the information, to do as she was paid and verify a tip like that. She opened her mouth, and he spoke again before she could interrupt.
“There is a third envelope, containing a list of…” Don’t say demands, “Requests. I’m aware of how strange and irrelevant they seem in lieu of the information at hand. It’s a small investment into an abandoned house, and will require a bit of labor in moving a number of my personal items. I’d like you to get started on it as soon as I leave. I left a check in there as payment for the services, and to cover any expenditures the house may require. Again, I know it seems irrelevant.”
Confusion written on her face, Akito still rose, one hand firmly grasping his backpack strap as he stepped over to her desk and retrieved the first two envelopes in spite of her protest. He couldn’t really hear her, anyway. “My email is attached. Once I receive proof that my requests are completed, I’ll send the information over. Thank you for your time.”
Hollow again in the cabin, he waited.
He left his phone at his side, head leaned against his statue with Isuzu in his arms. It was so quiet now. Without the cats, without the hum of his songbird, without the voices swirling in and out of his mind, he merely waited to hear the sound of an email chime.
The only sound in the silence was his own voice from time to time.
“I love you.”
“I miss you.”
Each admission opened another crack in his heart. It seemed he had no true shortage of tears when it came to her. Tears he let drip against the marble. Dearest girl.
To him, she would always be the dearest girl. There was no one for him but Tennichi Isuzu. The temple he created in the studio for her couldn’t begin to encompass the depth in which he loved her.
At last, when the chime came, he let out a choked laugh in his sob. “Do you think they did it, love?” He asked, brushing a thumb against the marble as if it were the face he so loved to touch. Reluctantly, his attention turned to his phone, scrolling to the end of the email with the attached photos. Their house. Kamukura Izuru and Enoshima Juno’s house, light maintenance in full swing, belongings and artworks he had yet to collect from his townhouse safely stored inside. Just as requested. In turn, he upheld his end of the bargain, letting the phone slip away from him afterwards as he focused on the urn again. “...Told you I would establish something. It can be a work in progress, okay?”
On the other side of the statue, he reached around for the box of matches he’d left before settling in beside it.
He’d made sure to douse the entire cabin quite thoroughly in gasoline.
Akito’s voice quivered when he spoke again. “I’m sorry it took so long. I really wanted to die with you. I did. I love you. I wish I could have told you not to let go next time.”
Finally, he could die. Finally. He wanted death every second that passed since hers.
In reality, it only took approximately 10 days. 10 days that felt like eons, 10 days that ended at last in fire that’d take his life. Each sweltering final moment Miyamura Akito endured was spent curled around the marble urn of the girl he swore himself to. Smoke filled his lungs to the brim while the temple of a cage he created crumbled.
