Dupioni

A plain weave silk fabric, produced using fine yarn in the warp and uneven yarn reeled from two or more entangled cocoons in the weft. This creates tightly woven yardage with a highly-lustrous surface and a crisp handle. It is similar to shantung, but slightly thicker, heavier, and with a greater slub count. Dupioni is often woven with differing colors of threads scattered through the warp and weft, this technique gives the fabric an iridescent effect.

If yall cosplaying folks were wondering about the physical specifications of inej’s gown, it’s actually a two-piece bodice + skirt

The bodice is sorta like this but with the position of the ties changed and a longer front, while the skirt is an Edwardian circle skirt with box pleats in the back:

The drapy bits are sewn to the bodice and connected to bangles.

Fabric suggestion would be a heavy iridescent taffeta (ideally silk but *hah* money) and an extra sheer chiffon or gauze. Feathers could be Actual Feathers or an applique of some kind. Buttons are mother of pearl.

Silkbaron’s selene taffeta (left) and iolite dupioni (right) would both work for the bodice and skirt:

the land of snowflakes is a frozen dreamscape among the snow and clouds and ice ❄☁

i’m so happy to share this month’s project! it was inspired by the waltz of the snowflakes from the nutcracker and the corresponding sequence in disney’s fantasia with snowflake fairies. thanks to @shmaba for taking the photos and helping arrange the set to fit my vision. thanks to @kezrekade for giving me some lovely snow photos to use as textures. and thanks to @mashapocalypse for giving me insight on real ballet tutus and shoes.

the tutu was 100% patterned and made by me. the bodice consists of 4 layers: ballet pink satin lining with some light plastic boning, a poly dupioni & beige peachskin for the main fashion fabric, an overlay of iridescent organza, and finally the lace. each of the beaded lace motifs were carefully cut out then hand sewn onto the bodice and peplum. the snowflake part of the tutu is an acrylic sheet with a spray painted design stenciled on. the tutu skirt itself only has 6 layers of tulle, less than the 9-12 ballet tutus normally have, but they alternate between white and ice blue giving it the look of glacial ice. the satin shoes are not true point shoes. they are demi pointe with no shank which i also modified for comfort on the inside. as ballerinas will tell you, no one not trained for it should be wearing real pointe shoes.

Quick summary please?

weeeeeelllllll i can make it not quick...

so the silk I want on my dress is Dupioni:

its gorgeous because it has a fine thread going one way (warp) and an uneven threat going the perpendicular direction (weft), so you can kinda see the crisscrossing pattern it makes in the above sample. It has subtle variations of color in the weaving too so it can be very iridescent.

in the looooovely close up of dupioni silk weave we can really see the subtle variations and shit.

SOOoooooooooooo I had to create a pattern for both the horizontal and vertical threads as you can see here with all the layers

finally, in order to get that texture, I created a more uniform weave (its easier to just copy and paste and then repeat, rather than do individual threads) to add a height map. Basically I took the ‘top’ bits and colored them in while the ‘under’ bits remained dark (white gets height added to it, black is subtracted)

lastly, because its digital and i can do what i want i took inspiration from some regular silk and added in that SPARKLE

but like exaggerated cause otherwise it wouldnt be visible. so BOOP

the final effect will be when I pull this into a renderer and hopefully apply some kind of fabric or ‘silk’ material to it which will help with the proper light reflections ^_^ And thats as much of a summary as I can do \o/

Red and Blue Elongated Sleeve and Marlowe Set

Stunning red and blue chenille paired with iridescent red and blue dupioni silk.

Ladies outfit is an Elongated Sleeve outfit. Black suede bodice can be any size. Sleeves are reversible and tie on: can be worn hanging or cuffed. Reversible stomacher. The underskirt has a drawstring waistband and the silk overskirt will have a fitted waistband made to the purchaser’s waist measurement. Lades partlet and hoop skirt are not included, but can be purchased separately.

Men’s outfit is a fabric Marlowe sewn with piping made from the silk in all of the seams. Buttons will be added up the front of the doublet and the front of each sleeve. Purchaser can choose from a selection of buttons in either brass or silver. Sleeves tie on and can be removed. This is our standard size doublet, but side panels can be added to add to the width of the doublet if needed. Chenille breeches with Italian pants made from the silk.

dupioni silk Dupion or Dupioni is a pure silk fabric made out of raw silk fiber. It is silk at its best natural

form. The default inherent random slubs distinguish it from other lesser quality silks.Sometimes

known as dupion or douppioni, silk dupioni is created with the threads from two different silk worms.

When two worms spin their cocoons close together, the fibers get tangled up; these naturally tangled

fibers are then used together to make the silk thread. The thread is rougher than regular silk, and
