Who is the worst founding father? Round 3: George Washington vs John Adams

George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. Appointed by the Continental Congress as commander of the Continental Army, Washington led Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War and served as president of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Washington has been called the “Father of his Country” for his manifold leadership in the nation’s founding.

Washington was a slave owner who had a complicated relationship with slavery. During his lifetime, he owned a cumulative total of over 577 slaves, who were forced to work on his farms and wherever he lived, including the President’s House in Philadelphia. Yet, as president, he also signed laws passed by Congress that both protected and curtailed slavery. His will stated that one of his slaves, William Lee, should be freed upon his death and that the other 123 slaves should be freed on his wife’s death, though she freed them earlier during her lifetime.

Some accounts report that Washington opposed flogging but at times sanctioned its use, generally as a last resort, on both men and women slaves. Washington used both reward and punishment to encourage discipline and productivity in his slaves. He tried appealing to an individual’s sense of pride, gave better blankets and clothing to the “most deserving”, and motivated his slaves with cash rewards. He believed “watchfulness and admonition” to be often better deterrents against transgressions but would punish those who “will not do their duty by fair means”. Punishment ranged in severity from demotion back to fieldwork, through whipping and beatings, to permanent separation from friends and family by sale.

Washington endeavored to assimilate Native Americans into the Anglo-American culture. He also waged military campaigns against Native American nations during the Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War.

His closest advisors formed two factions, portending the First Party System. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton formed the Federalist Party to promote national credit and a financially powerful nation. Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson opposed Hamilton’s agenda and founded the Jeffersonian Republicans. Washington favored Hamilton’s agenda, however, and it ultimately went into effect—resulting in bitter controversy.

In response to antislavery petitions that were presented in 1790, slaveholders objected and threatened to “blow the trumpet of civil war”. Washington and Congress responded with a series of racist measures: naturalized citizenship was denied to black immigrants; blacks were barred from serving in state militias; the Southwest Territory that would soon become the state of Tennessee was permitted to maintain slavery; and two more slave states were admitted. Washington signed into law the Fugitive Slave Act, which overrode state laws and courts, allowing agents to cross state lines to capture and return escaped slaves. Many free blacks in the north decried the law believing it would allow bounty hunting and the kidnappings of blacks.

John Adams (October 30, 1735 – July 4, 1826) was an American statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, and Founding Father who served as the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Before his presidency, he was a leader of the American Revolution that achieved independence from Great Britain. During the latter part of the war and in the early years of the nation, he served as a diplomat in Europe. He was the first person to hold the office of vice president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. Adams was a dedicated diarist and regularly corresponded with many important contemporaries, including his wife and adviser Abigail Adams as well as his friend and rival Thomas Jefferson.

During his single term, Adams encountered fierce criticism from the Jeffersonian Republicans and from some in his own Federalist Party, led by his rival Alexander Hamilton. Adams signed the controversial Alien and Sedition Acts, and built up the Army and Navy in the undeclared naval war (called the “Quasi-War”) with France.

In an attempt to quell [public] outcry, the Federalists introduced, and the Congress passed, a series of laws collectively referred to as the Alien and Sedition Acts, which were signed by Adams in June 1798. All came within a period of two weeks, in what Jefferson called an “unguarded passion.” The Alien Friends Act, Alien Enemies Act, and Naturalization Acts targeted immigrants, specifically French, by giving the president greater deportation authority and increasing citizenship requirements. The Sedition Act made it a crime to publish “false, scandalous, and malicious writing” against the government or its officials. Adams had not promoted any of these acts, but was urged to sign them by his wife and cabinet. He eventually agreed and signed the bills into law.

In his bid in 1800 for reelection to the presidency, opposition from Federalists and accusations of despotism from Jeffersonians led to Adams losing to his vice president and former friend Jefferson, and he retired to Massachusetts.

After the Japanese Defense Ministry spotted an armed reconnaissance drone of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) flying above waters to the east side of the island of Taiwan on Monday, Taiwan media reported that the PLA aircraft went and made a full circle flight around the island of Taiwan for the first time. A TB-001 drone of the PLA flew to the eastern side of the island of Taiwan, crossed the Bashi Channel and continued to fly along the alleged median line of the Taiwan Straits, marking that the drone made a clockwise circle around the island on Monday, the first day of Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang military drills, media on the island reported on Tuesday.[...]

The report came after Japan's Ministry of Defense Joint Staff said in a press release that a TB-001 armed reconnaissance drone of the PLA flew across the Miyako Strait and to the eastern side of the island of Taiwan on Monday.

According to a flight path provided by the Japanese release, the TB-001 went further south and headed toward the Bashi Channel without returning, which is consistent with the report made by Taiwan media.

However, Taiwan’s defense authority only reported that a Y-8 reconnaissance plane and a J-11 fighter jet of the PLA entered Taiwan's self-proclaimed southwest air defense identification zone on Monday, which means the it had failed to detect the TB-001 drone, or it intentionally did not report it, observers said. Taiwan armed forces’ failure to report the PLA drone activity exposed that there are huge loopholes in their air defense systems. This showed that the PLA can potentially send drones to Taiwan without facing major threats in a possible cross-Straits conflict. These drones are of lower cost and do not have pilots, giving an advantage, the expert said.

The drone only conducted reconnaissance in Monday’s mission, but if a real conflict were to break out, countless drones can carry out all sorts of missions including reconnaissance, attack, target indication, damage evaluation, electronic warfare and communications relay, the expert said.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – One of the victims of what police described as an unprovoked attack on June 25, has died, the Portland Police Bureau announced Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as 82-year-old Donald A. Pierce, who officials say died in the hospital Thursday night. His death was ruled a homicide by blunt trauma.

The other victim, 88-year-old Edward Lichenstein, has been released from the hospital, PPB said.

The attack happened around 8:30 p.m. when police say 29-year-old Keffer J. White "repeatedly punched and kicked both" men in an assault stopped by officers on patrol in the area.

According to Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt, the men were waiting for a bus at Southwest 5th and Hall when they were attacked. White reportedly approached them, began to yell, made fun of them for being older and became more aggressive.

White headbutted Lichenstein and shoved him to the ground, the DA said. Pierce, who was using a cane for balance, was pushed into the street and onto the ground where White kicked him in the head and face several times. Both men tried to get up and get away, but White continued his attack on both men, according to Schmidt.

Officers in the area heard the screams of witnesses and arrested White at the scene on two counts of second-degree assault and an outstanding warrant. Witnesses told police White said during the attack he was going to kill the men.

Portland police said the suspect, Keffer White, is still in custody with additional charges pending. Officials did not disclose what those additional charges are.

Court documents obtained by KOIN 6 News said White was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time. He was convicted of assaulting a police officer in 2016. At the time of his arrest in January 2022 for the stolen car, he also had a protective order against him.

"The Joy Construction Co., street contractors, (was) incorporated with $5000 capital stock by David Joy, C. J. Walker and E. A. Morgan" in 1913 ("Communications," Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 11, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1913).

Before the incorporation of Joy Construction Co., David Joy of Los Angeles did a lot of work in the greater area, including securing a "contract for constructing lateral sewers in alleys" in Ontario, CA for $9K. He was also awarded a "contract for Improving Pasadena Ave. from Tenth to Fifth St." in Azusa, CA and a "contract for improvements on Regent St." in Inglewood, CA (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 3, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1909). In 1908, he was a low bidder for the construction of a "sewer in Moneta avenue, from Vernon avenue to 36th place, and other streets" in Los Angeles (Municipal Journal and Public Works, Volume 25, Municipal Journal & Engineer, Incorporated, 1908).

The only even maybe construction related notice I found about an E.A. Morgan said that he sold a lot in Pomona on E. Holt Ave. to an E. G. Bangie (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 12, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1913).

I can't find anything on who the Walker is - I am assuming our C. J. Walker is not the famous entrepreneur Madam C. J. Walker.

In Contractor, Volume 20, I found a listing of a contract awarded to the company "for improving number of streets" in Santa Monica, CA (McGraw Publishing Company, 1914)

We learn from Street Improvement Acts of California: Including Amendments of 1927 that "a material man's claim filed with the street superintendent within thirty days after completion of the work is (considered) filed in time," due to the case "Barr Lumber Company v. Joy Construction, 47 Cal. App. 408 (Locke, William James. A. Clarlisle & Company, 1927).

Leo Suns are bright and radiant! Which makes a lot of sense considering that Leo’s Guardian “planet” is the Sun. Self-expression and the recognition of their expression is a central to their identity. They know themselves through their performance and when wisely attuned, the gift of Leo is revealing that we are all performing, so why not choose what role we want to play? It’s time to write your own lines, the lion tells us. Bigger is often better in the world of Leo and they don’t always have an inner voice nagging them about “too much of a good thing.” What is that, the lion asks.

Where Leo folk fall into trouble is when they allow their pride to trip them up. When they mistake confidence for competence. Many a lion can get carried away with the need for being the center of attention that they forgo the effort it might take to earn being paid attention to in the ways they want. Sometimes Leo folk are perceived to lack emotional maturity. While there are Leo folk who do need to spend time developing themselves emotionally, many possess a child-like enthusiasm and emotional clarity that resists overcomplicating everything. If you’re in love, be in love! If you’re angry, be angry! Yet, emotionally complicated situations are a fact of life and can become confusing, aggravating, and defeating to Leo folk and their companions. Understanding that embracing complexity does not mean they will jeopardize their purity of expression is an important lesson for Leo folk to learn. Then, their theatre begins to take on the gifts of sacred expression and their stories become timeless.

Within a medical astrology perspective, Leo are one of the most inherently vital signs of the zodiac. Yet, it is very important for Leo folk to not spend all of their energy in the wildness of youth, but learn how to temper their energetic output in a way that will keep them vital until the end of their days. They are a fixed fire sign which means that they burn hot which can very easily lead to burnout. Physically, Leo folk need to be very mindful of drinking lots of fresh water to keep their inner heat from burning them up from the inside out (and prevent the all too common imbalance of dehydration). The gifts of Leo is a spirit of generosity so big that is might just change the world. Leo folk help us to connect with our innate will, our truest desires, and to find the confidence we need to actually go after our dreams.

Leo Guardian Herbs

Rue (Ruta graveolens)

The name Rue is derived from the Greek rueo which means “to set free” which tells us about Rue’s ability to set us free from disease as well as magickal crossings. The traditional cimaruta charm of Italy is shaped like the Rue plant and protects against the evil eye. The herb is hot and dry, embodying the Leo qualities of Sun. Leo values emotional expression and Rue can be a helpful herb for those who struggle to express emotions that they feel are volatile, such as anger and frustration.

Rue is an herb that should be used with respect and is a step beyond some of the more accessible herbs of the western herbal tradition. It is an herb best used at low doses as higher doses can cause unpleasant side effects such as dizziness, nausea, and cramping. Rue should be used in moderation and those who are especially sensitive-skinned should be mindful of touching the fresh plant with bare skin or ingesting the herb in remedies as it can cause blistering. In general, excessive handling of the fresh plant with bare skin should be avoided. It is an herb of the Sun and it’s heat should be respected.

While it was an herb used widely in the ancient world of traditional western herbalism, its use has decline during the modern era. Yet, one of the continued uses of Rue is as an emmenagogue and anti-fertility herb. It can help to bring on menses, ease premenstrual tension, and prevent pregnancy. Rue is used widely in Latine communities as an abortifacient. The herb also has a traditional use for cancer, especially uterine cancer, which may stem from its cleansing qualities of the uterus.

Rue is also used for eyestrain and imbalances, helping sooth overworked eyes whether taken internally or topically as a an oil. Look for signs of wateriness and sensitivity. Digestive congestion, colic, and a cold digestion may be aided by Rue’s drying, warming, and stimulating qualities. It’s Sun powers also make it effective in the relief of arthritis especially when the condition is made worse during times of damp and cold.

I use the herb most often in my practice in magickal charms and as a flower essence. It is an herb of protection, bringing luck, steadfast will, and the abundance of love. I also use the flower essence for helping folks return to a state of grace (one of the Rue’s folk names is Herb of Grace). It is especially useful for folks who feel like they lack support in their life and they are having to deal with all of their problems on their own. Rue can help folks who may feel paranoid that they are always under attack - the herb helps them release a victim-mentality and find their strength.

Leo Remedy Herbs

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)

Hawthorn is heart medicine of the most nourishing variety. The herb strengthens the heart, improved blood flow, dilates the blood vessels, and increases nutrient absorption. It is an excellent herb to take after a period of illness or physical strain to protect the heart from further upset. For our lion-hearted Leo folk, Hawthorn is cooling, without dampening, helping Leo folk to return to their center. It is a calming herb, excellent for cases of attention-deficit, nervousness, and anxiety. Drink Hawthorn tea before bed in cases of insomnia caused by excess of agitating heat in the system. An added bonus, is Hawthorn’s ability to help us ride the hedge or travel purposefully in our dreams between the worlds.

As a digestive tonic, Hawthorn clears the gut of toxicity and build-up as well as helping with metabolizing of fat. Look for excess heat and fluids. The flower can be used in steams for acne and a lack of lustre in the complexion, while the berry can be used in a gargle for sore throats and bleeding gums. The herb has a long association with the Good Folk and magick within Celtic cultures. Use it in your magickal workings for trance and journey work, as well as connecting with the liminal spaces between.

Sun in Leo Flower Essence

Vervain is the flower essence for Leo folk who let their enthusiasm get the best of them. They take up too much space, whether dominating conversations or trying to always take the lead, and can end up trying to convince everyone that their opinion is the best way forward. Now often their need for everyone to get on board their enthusiasm train is driven from a belief that everyone will benefit, they need to learn how to share space effectively. Vervain helps Leo folk realize that commonality of purpose is more important than everyone having the same opinion as them. The essence helps Leo folk take a step back, relax, and become a better team player.

Fear of negative evaluation (FNE), defined as a sense of dread associated with being negatively judged in a social situation, has been identified as the primary factor underlying undergraduate anxiety in active-learning science courses. However, no quantitative studies have examined the extent to which science undergraduates experience FNE and how they are impacted by FNE in college science courses. To address this gap, we surveyed 566 undergraduates from one university in the U.S. Southwest who were enrolled in life sciences courses where they had opportunities to speak in front of the whole class. Participants were asked a suite of questions regarding their experiences with FNE in large-enrollment college science courses. We found that first-generation college students, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities reported disproportionately high levels of FNE compared with their counterparts. Additionally, students reported that FNE can cause them to overthink their responses and participate less in class. Participants rated being cold called and presenting alone as forms of whole-class participation that elicit the highest levels of FNE. This research highlights the impact of FNE on undergraduates and provides student-generated recommendations to reduce FNE in active- learning science courses.

Coming Soon: The Madness of E.W. and Lydie Marland

Pioneer Woman: 1930

Although he was nearly broke, one piece of unfinished business remained. Four years before, when E.W. Marland was the richest oilman in world, he paid ten thousand dollars each to twelve artists to create twelve Pioneer Woman models, then transport the three-foot statuettes by train to thirteen cities. Seven hundred fifty thousand people voted for Bryant Baker’s creation.

Baker’s seventeen-feet-tall, twelve-thousand-pound finished bronze was to be delivered to Ponca City in April and installed on a twenty-three-feet-tall granite base. However, J.P. Morgan had taken over Marland Oil in 1928, and E.W. had lost his thirty-million-dollar personal fortune when the stock market crashed in 1929. He could not make the final payment. Lew Wentz, initially his friend, then an Oil Patch competitor with whom E.W. had a long-standing dispute, loaned E.W. twenty-five thousand dollars.

The unveiling was scheduled for April 22, the forty-first anniversary of the 1889 Land Run. Gov. William J. Holloway declared a state holiday. Forty thousand people attended, and more listened by radio as Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley addressed the nation from Washington, D.C.

Hurley also invited Will Rogers as a fellow speaker, and flew him from California. Although E.W. reserved a permanent bedroom for the movie star at the fifty-five-room Marland Mansion, he had not wanted Oklahoma’s favorite son and 101 Ranch cowboy to speak. The comedian was a loose canon. E.W. feared Will’s satire, his rapier accuracy, the way he exposed political frailty.

Will stood before Pioneer Woman as the statue was unveiled. “I came all the way from California to undress a woman.”

The crowd loved Will’s stand-up comedy, but his ribald lack of dignity marred the event for E.W., who demonstrated the seriousness of the occasion by wearing a top hat and cutaway.

When the canvas was pulled, the crowd saw Pioneer Woman look down Monument Road, three blocks southwest of the Marland Mansion.

Baker named his statue Confident. “ . . . the woman was to me the courageous character marching out, carrying all her worldly belongings, her bible, and her son, the man of tomorrow to a new life. She is the abstract, beautiful, ideal woman of the spirit of great faith and hope. . .”

E.W. asked if his friend and alter ego, Frank Phillips, wanted to buy tapestries, rugs, paintings, the original castings of the dozen Pioneer Woman statuettes, or the original model by Bryant Baker that had won the competition. Phillips purchased all the statuary for Woolaroc. There were always bankers and directors ready to swallow up oil companies. Phillips promised to never let anyone take Phillips 66–particularly Morgan or Rockefeller.

J/22 District 5 April Update - Upcoming Circuit Stop in Shreveport!

Those of you on the J/22 District 5 rolls and email list will have received this recent message from 2024 District Governor, Colin Feik. Here’s a great recap of recent district happenings and a reminder: Crew get your skippers and skippers get your crew and get yourself on your way to Shreveport Yacht Club for the next District 5 Circuit stop.

Hello District 5 J/22 Sailors - First off, I want to thank Eric Simonson for doing an awesome job as district governor the past few years, I am quickly learning just how much time and effort he has put back into the sport with his leadership the past few years, I know we are all very grateful!

Second - recap of the season so far: The season is well underway with the first circuit stop completed in Dallas at Rush Creek Yacht Club in early March. The local boats dominated with a 1-2-3 finish led by Jeff Progelhof winning 5 of the 6 races, followed by a solid showing from Bill Draheim in 2nd, and Jake Scott dusted off his boat to round out the podium in 3rd! Conditions were nice and warm and breezy, hopefully we can mimic those conditions next year when midwinters will be held at Rush Creek. A couple weeks ago the midwinters were held in New Orleans with 27 boats on the line with 7 boats from our district making the trip over to the Big Easy. Glenn Darden hails from FWBC and took home the hardware winning the event on a tiebreaker. They won the final race by passing fellow District 5 member Kevin Orff on the final leg of the regatta race to secure the overall victory. Congrats to Kevin and crew on finishing second in that race, now they will have to go to worlds in Annapolis to continue putting up those single digit finishes at big events! Next Up: Circuit Stop - Shreveport The next circuit stop is scheduled for April 20-21 at Shreveport Yacht Club on Cross Lake (link below to register and NOR also attached). 6 local Shreveport boats have already registered, so we should have a really great event. SYC's hospitality and steak dinner is second to none! In the past a few lucky sailors have even been allowed to stay at the SYC club, contact Tom Hadel ([email protected]) to inquire.

According to the Harney County Libraries Historic Downtown Burns pages this location is the site of the first Burns Post Office established by George McGowan in 1884. The location was purchased by Julius Durkheimer in 1889 where he operated a mercantile store. According to the library, the site of the original wooden building was replaced in 1930 with a brick and reinforced concrete structure that was financed by the Weinburn Realty Company. If this location is accurate the location would be on the Southwest corner of North Broadway Avenue and A Street. The location currently houses the Harney County Chamber of Commerce.

East Oregon Herald., June 20, 1889 is the earliest ad for J. Durkheimer and Co. that appeared in the paper. This was an branch of their stores that were in Prairie City and Canyon City Oregon.

Grant County News., July 04, 1889. The original store was founded in Praire City Oregon. Durkheimer expanded to Canyon City in 1888 and arrived in Burns the following year.

Bodies of Kennedy, Bessettes Brought to Shore

OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Falmouth, Mass., July 21 – Navy divers recovered the bodies of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and his sister-in-law from the wreckage of the Kennedy plane in seas southwest of Martha's Vineyard today, ending a period of uncertainty for their families and putting investigators closer to finding out what caused the fatal crash.

After scouring the ocean floor for about 18 hours, the recovery team identified the bodies of Kennedy, 38, his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, 33, and her sister Lauren Bessette, 34, about 10:30 a.m. today in 116 feet of water 7.5 miles off the Vineyard's shores, Coast Guard officials said.

Kennedy's body was found in the cockpit, and the women's bodies were found amid the twisted wreckage. All three were still strapped in their seats, Coast Guard Rear Adm. Richard Larrabee said.

Sources close to the investigation also said today that preliminary radar information shows no evidence that Kennedy's plane crashed as a result of breaking up in flight.

Investigators have now combed through data from numerous radar installations in the area, and none shows any additional objects in the vicinity of the Kennedy plane, either as it began its final maneuvers or as it plunged toward the Atlantic Ocean.

The discovery of the bodies brought some relief to the families, who mostly have remained in seclusion since the plane was reported missing early Saturday morning. And it prompted an outpouring of renewed mourning among Americans – at makeshift memorials in Manhattan and Arlington and at the Kennedy museum in Hyannis.

Shortly after the bodies were discovered today, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and his sons, Edward M. Kennedy Jr. and Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-R.I.), were flown from the family compound in Hyannis Port aboard a Coast Guard helicopter and taken to the USS Grasp, at the crash site, for a briefing on the recovery effort. The bodies were brought up from the ocean floor about 4:30 p.m., Larrabee said, and taken to the medical examiner's office in Woods Hole for autopsies.

The unprecedented interagency effort to recover the bodies and wreckage of a private plane flown by a private citizen is testament to the deep symbolism and historical importance that many Americans attach to the Kennedy name. The effort also has raised questions about whether other private citizens would receive similar treatment. President Clinton, who is close to the Kennedy family, defended the effort at a news conference today and said he had spoken with Navy officials Monday about whether the search should continue. The officials believed they could succeed with more time, and Clinton recounted today that he told them "I would support and defend" a decision to continue.

The Kennedy and Bessette families today announced plans for private memorial services. A service for Kennedy and his wife will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More church in Manhattan, where Kennedy's mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, worshipped. A service for Lauren Bessette will be held Saturday evening in the sisters' home town of Greenwich, Conn.

There also will be a public memorial service at 6 p.m. Thursday at the old St. Patrick's Cathedral in lower Manhattan.

The families were trying to resolve differences about burial plans, a source said. A senior administration official said that Kennedy would be buried at sea as early as Thursday but that plans for his wife and sister-in-law were uncertain. A Navy ship had been positioned for the sea burial, Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said.

In Hyannis, the discovery of the bodies seemed to slow most activity in the community the Kennedy family calls home.

Few magazines bearing the image of John F. Kennedy Jr. on their covers remained for sale at the News Shop, the quaint corner store where locals sip coffee on an outside bench and discuss the latest news.

Barbara Currier, 43, a long-time summer resident whose son assisted with the initial search, said she was glad the search has ended with the bodies recovered. "The unknown is almost worse than the known," she said.

Like others in this village, Currier considered the Kennedys part of her extended family and expressed deep admiration for the way they have handled one tragedy after another. "It touches you because it's right in our back yard," she said. "You have to say, 'God bless them, they go on.' There's no guarantee for any of us."

Her daughter, Kendra, 13, said she looked up to the young Kennedy much as her mother had respected his father. "I wasn't born when JFK died, but now I know what people must have felt," she said.

The intense search for the plane's wreckage and the bodies was conducted meticulously over a 24-mile swath of at least 10 search grids that had been mapped out according to their potential as wreckage sites.

The stepped-up search this morning was aided by the USS Grasp's sophisticated diving and underwater endurance equipment, including a remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, to assist the divers. Side-looking sonar from another vessel also has been used.

Pinpointing the location of the wreckage had taken days in part because Kennedy, before taking off Friday, did not file a flight plan. In addition, aviation officials had to study radar records from a variety of sources to map the plane's movement and status at various points.

From that research, investigators determined that Kennedy lost control of the plane and that it plunged into the ocean in a 53 mph dive from which even experienced pilots could scarely recover.

Kennedy had been a licensed pilot for a little more than a year, making him relatively inexperienced despite his enthusiasm and his flights virtually every weekend. He took off from the Essex County airport in Fairfield, N.J., at 8:38 p.m. Friday on a night of hazy skies and reduced visibility.

Just what happened in the air will be pieced together by investigators as they put together the wreckage they are collecting in a hangar here at Otis Air National Guard Base. Until the recovery last night of the 8 to 10 feet of wreckage in which divers found the bodies, the collection of debris recovered so far included part of the plane's landing gear, a panel of the cabin interior's moulding, a headrest, a piece of luggage and a prescription bottle.

Investigators noted that after the plane began making a series of turns before its fatal plunge, it appeared to be under control, if perhaps acting erratically. The engine also appeared to be operating, because the plane remained relatively level until it began the plunge. Some pilots speculated that the plane could not have achieved a descent of more than 5,000 feet per minute unless it had power on the way down.

Investigators will closely examine the wreckage for the telltale tears, scrapes and other structural damage that would indicate whether the plane remained intact until it hit water.

Larrabee said the instrument panel is in the wreckage, offering a potential wealth of information on the plane's final moments and what Kennedy did with the controls in the moments before the crash.
