Hamferð - Men Guðs hond er sterk

Hamferð est un groupe de death-doom féroïen, il est composé de Jón Aldará – chant, Theodor Kapnas – guitars, Eyðun í Geil Hvannastein – guitares, Jenus í Trøðini – basse, Esmar Joensen – claviers, Remi Kofoed Johannesen – batterie. Les trois premiers albums de Hamferð étaient thématiquement liés dans un fascinant arc narratif inversé.

Sa discographie a débuté avec “Vilst er síðsta fet » (Tutl 2010), « Evst » (Tutl 2013), « Támsins likam » ( Metal Blade Records 2017), « Ódn » (Metal Blade Records 2019) apportant une accumulation de richesse musicale, d’expérience live et d'une alchimie interpersonnelle dont l’impact de profondeur se retrouve sur ce quatrième album « Men Guðs hond er sterk » via Metal Blade Records, qui a été enregistré et mixé au Studio Bloch à Tórshavn, Îles Féroé, la vision sonore artisanale du guitariste et producteur Theodor Kapnas.

Le cœur de leur musique est au crépuscule, il boit au fleuve des sources souterraines des lampées de noirceur. Si une seule étincelle avait seulement touché le charme sacré de cette bougie dans le noir, elle eut éclairé tout le précipice des enfers. Puissamment émotif le groupe a propulsé le deuil en se concentrant sur la force émotionnelle traumatisante derrière ce phénomène surnaturel. « Nous voulions faire quelque chose de complètement différent. Le concept narratif derrière ‘’Men Guðs hond er sterk’’ s'inspire d'un événement local déchirant : le désastre baleinier de 1915 au large du village de Sandvik, sur l'île Féroé (domicile du claviériste de Hamferð, Esmar Joensen), au cours duquel 14 hommes sont morts en chassant des baleines vers le rivage dans la baie orageuse. La population du village a été témoin du drame depuis le bord de la mer. » explique Theodor

« Quand vous voyez quelqu'un à Hamferð, vous voyez son apparition », explique Theodor. « La plupart du temps, ce sont des femmes dont les maris sont en mer, qui les ont vus mouillés dans l'encadrement de la porte au milieu de la nuit. Généralement, dans le folklore, c'est un avertissement que quelque chose de grave va se produire, et il existe plusieurs épisodes documentés de cela qui se sont produits à Sandvik en 1915. »

La musique, son rythme, le chant résonne en une nuit d'hiver, avec une neige pour étouffer le monde autour des spectres, et de ses métamorphoses sensibles. Les passages évoluent dans une beauté post-métallique glaciale vers des cadences folk-goth douloureuses, passant par des blastbeats noircis jusqu'à des vues frémissantes de doom. « J'aime énormément l'esthétique de nombreux disques plus anciens », s'enthousiasme Theodor. " Sabbath, AC/DC, Slipknot. Les disques sonnent comme un groupe jouant ensemble, ça groove d'une manière spécifique. Toute cette dynamique donne à la musique un avantage qui manque dans la grande majorité du métal sorti aujourd'hui. C'est très subjectif, et je sais que la plupart des groupes à succès sonnent bien plus raffinés que nous, mais notre vision était de créer un disque qui sonne comme si nous jouions tous les six ensembles. »

le disque est une pièce collective, une création familiale s'investissant émotionnellement «Quand tout le monde joue en même temps, il n'y a pas d'endroit où se cacher. Tout le monde peut apporter sa contribution. » dixit Theodor

La procession progresse et « Musicalement, tout est question de tension ; accords suspendus et harmonies tendues, avec toujours ce sentiment d'incertitude.» affirme Theodor

Le titre atmosphérique de clôture « Men Guðs hond er sterk » contient le témoignage enregistré de l'un des survivants de la catastrophe, tiré d'une interview radiophonique des années 1950 : « Il décrit ce qui a conduit à cet événement et l'effet qu'il a eu sur le village pendant des années. Nous avons obtenu la permission d'utiliser l'interview de sa fille ; elle a quatre-vingt-dix ans et vit toujours au village, alors Esmar a frappé à sa porte et lui a demandé la permission, qu'elle nous a donnée ! Ce qui est cool, c'est qu'il raconte cette horrible tragédie, mais avec ce ton optimiste, car l'un des bateaux a réussi à traverser les vagues. Ainsi, au lieu de se concentrer sur les parties sombres, sa perspective émotionnelle la plus forte était celle du miracle qui les a sauvés. Heureusement, les paroles et les témoignages seront imprimés en féroïen et en anglais, garantissant que cette histoire épique captivera un public plus large.

しばらく振りの投稿です。 アベンジャーズの最新作が公開されてシリーズを見返したり、 水曜どうでしょうの甘いもの国盗り～ユーコン編を見返したり、 頼んだCDが全然届かなかったり。 そんなこんなをしている内に時間が過ぎていきました（笑）

フィンランドのプログレ（フォーク）メロデス / ドゥームメタル。 Barren Earthの4thアルバム「A Complex Of Cages」

Hamferd、Amorphis、Moonsorrow、Kreator、Waltari等で活躍するメンバーが揃ったスーパーバンド。

本作のメンバー構成

毎度の事ながら、期待した分をキッチリ返してくれるような「手堅い」出来に仕上がっています。 1st～2ndにもアコギによる静パートを用いた展開で十分にプログレッシヴな内容でしたが、前作の3rdからそのプログレ色をより一層強めた内容に変化しました。

そして今作はさらにその路線を強く推し進めた内容に仕上がっています。

まあ何が言いたいかというと、3rdでもその傾向は強かったですがBarren Earthというバンドは メロデス界隈のバンドではなくプログレ界隈のバンドへと完全に進化（変化）したということに尽きます。

今まではBarren Earthの比較対象や似ているバンドは？という問いには Amorphisの名前が筆頭に挙がっていたと思いますが、 今作ではIn VainやBorknagar、In Mourning等のバンドの名の方が先に出て来るんじゃないかなと感じました。

1. The Living Fortress 2. The Ruby 3. Further Down 4. Zeal 5. Scatterprey 6. Solitude Pith 7. Dysphoria 8. Spire 9. Withdrawal

1. The Living Fortress ほんのりと浮遊感のあるイントロから「A Complex Of Cages」というアルバムタイトルが聴こえ プログレデスらしいダークでどこか怪しげな展開へと流れます。ここではキーボードが大活躍。 そこからアコギとクリーンボーカルが目立つ静パートを挟み、 メロディアスなギターフレーズとグロウルとクリーンを用いたChorusへと移行します。 その後は思わず頭を振りたくなるようなグルーヴ感強めの刻み、笛とクリーンによる物凄く静かなパート カウベルを用いたザックザクなグルーヴパート、Chorus。最初に出てきたダーク怪しげな展開で終了。

どこでカウントするかにもよりますが、約6分40秒曲中に10回ほどの展開を行ったり来たりをしています。 しかもそれが違和感無くシームレスに変化していくもんだから完全にヤラれました。 集中して聴かないと展開の聴き逃しが発生しそうなリスナー泣かせ（嬉し泣き）なアルバムオープナーになっています。

2. The Ruby シンプル且つヘヴィなギターによるイントロ。ザックザク刻みとグロウルの展開。 クリーンとグロウル、ドラムの金物の鳴りが印象的なChorus。 リードギターによるメロディアスな展開からギターソロへと流れていきます。 その後Chorusに戻ります。

3. Further Down ブリッジミュートの刻み感が心地良いイントロから、ほんのりとフォーキーな匂いを感じるリードギターの展開。 完全にフォーキーなリードギターとクリーンのChorus。ここまでの流れを3分くらいまでまで行ったり来たりします。 そして70'sプログレのような展開が約10秒ほど登場し、左右の耳を交互にザクザクと刺激してくる刻みの展開、 ピッキングハーモニクスやら弦楽器やらクリーンボーカルやらキーボードやらが活躍する豪華なパート、Chorus、刻みと流れて曲の終わりを迎えます。

4. Zeal ピアノによる物悲しい音と耳元で囁かれてるような優しい歌の展開からスタート。 徐々に登場する楽器が増えていき、怪しさ100パーセントの展開へと流れます。 その後はドゥーミーだけどどこかコミカルな印象のパート、キーボード大活躍のパート、 デスメタリックに疾走するパート、伸びやかな歌声が印象的なChorusで曲が終わります。

Chorusは曲の終盤に一度しか登場しないですが、そこまでの溜めて溜めてが凄いので 圧倒的な爆発力と刹那的な美しさを伴って非常に印象的に聴かせることに成功していると感じます。

5. Scatterprey いかにもな北欧メロデス的な漢泣きのギターメロディから始まる一曲。 3分を少し過ぎた辺りからフランジャーのエフェクトを用いたデスメタリックな展開が登場。

6. Solitude Pith フォーキー且つプロギーな印象の強い10分越えの大曲。 フォーキーなメロディが続く前半約3分。 そこに70's Progリスペクトなキーボードも加わり凄く好みです。 そこからバンドサウンドを強め、フォークメロデスなChorus。 5分を過ぎた辺りで「曲変わった？」と思わせるような 前半とは別のフォーキーなメロディの導入と展開。その後Chorusへ戻って終了。

元は別々の曲だったんじゃないかと思わせるようなメロディの変化と その行き来をナチュラルに1曲の中でやってのける凄さ。 特に後半のフォーキーなメロディからChorusへの繋ぎに違和感が無さ過ぎて、 前半も同じ展開で進行してたよね？という錯覚さえ起こさせるような曲に仕上がっています。

7. Dysphoria アコギと弦楽器隊による静かな幕開け。 その後バンドサウンドが登場しますが、そこで出てくるギターメロディが非常に秀逸。 レガートを駆使した、耳残りの良いメロディが強く印象に残ります。 そこからはドゥーミーな感じを漂わせながらと進行していき、ギターソロの登場。 アコーディオンの登場と共に楽曲を終幕へと導いていく感じが個人的にすごく好みです。

8. Spire 本作中最もデスメタリックなVerseの曲。 そのVerseがオペラティックなクリーンのChorusをより一層際立たせている。 醜と美の対比が非常にしっかりとした正にプログデスな仕上がり。 民族感溢れる打楽器もちょっとした不気味さや奇妙な感じを出すのに一役買っている。

9. Withdrawal 本作のシメを飾るのは非常にアコースティックな一曲。 優しく語りかけるようなボーカルが夢見心地にさせてくれる。 楽曲中盤からは雰囲気は前半のままだが、若干力が入ったなという 優し目のバンドサウンドの展開へと変化します。

何度か聴いてみて。 よりプログレッシヴな方向へ舵を切ったのは個人的には非常に好み。 強いメタルサウンドであるのにも関わらず全体的に静かな印象を受けました。

特に9曲目なんかはK Scopeからリリースされてもおかしく無いような気すらします。

「ハッ！」とさせられるような曲は正直1曲目だけでしたが、 なんというか「全体的に地味だけどすごい好き」という感想を持ちました。

フックのあるメロディや極端な展開などの登場は稀なので、 プログレの様じっくり聴き込むというよりも、ポストロック的な聴き方(BGM的な)の方が合っている気がします。

これがBarren Earthの望んだ進化(変化)なのかは分かりませんが、個人的にはこの方向性はすごく好みです。 もっと分かりやすい展開やフックのあるメロディなどを今の曲の雰囲気のまま導入することがあれば間違いなく世間からの認知は上がると思います。

作風は地味ですが、飽きの来なさそうな良作。 「地味だけどすごい好き」という評価がやっぱり一番シックリくる気がします。
