She is a Canadian actress and singer. She is most known for her roles on the American television series Law & Order, on which she played prosecutor Claire Kincaid for three seasons, and Crossing Jordan, on which she played the lead character, Jordan Cavanaugh, for six seasons. She has also acted in films such as RoboCop 3 and Most Wanted, and the independent films The Acting Class, the latter of which she also wrote and co-directed.

Episode Recap #47: Wedding in Black Original Airdate: May 13, 1989

We are in Buenos Aires this week, in a restaurant, we met a rakish man who gets the attention of a proustite, then shows her a big snow globe. They speak Spanish, and soon we are with them in a room. They kiss but the man quickly strangles the woman, killing her.

Next is a prison, and the man is taken to be put to death. He gets last rites, then is given an intravenous injection. He talks to Satan, saying they had a deal. Satan tells Calvin he is needed elsewhere, and Calvin dies.

Then we cut to a missionary priest, who is praying, but then suddenly attacks a woman before being restrained by local men. They tie him up, then another man arrives and lights the bed on fire. As he burns, we hear Satan again, saying he needs Brother Antonio elsewhere.

Flash to Miami and a news report about a Nurse named Maya Zedler, convicted of mercy killings. She is out on bail and listening to the report about her being accused of killing 17 old people over six months. She gets up, goes to the bathroom and slits her wrists. As she lays dying, Satan calls her to him and we see flames.

Maya awakens in a flaming cave, Calvin and Antonio are also there. Satan speaks to them, telling them he offers another chance at life if they help him deal with three others who resist him, who also have connections to each of them.

Cut to Curious Goods at Winter, with snow falling. Jack tells Micki she has a package from Argentina. She is clueless as to who it can be from, and opens the crate to reveal the snow globe Calvin had. Inside the globe is a replica of the Magic Castle, a tourist trap near her hometown. She says she went there in the 7th grade and they bought globes like it then. Just as she wonders who could have sent it, Calvin arrives and says it was him. Micki is shocked to see him and they embrace. Seems he was a friend of Lloyd and her from school. She introduces Calvin to Jack and Ryan.

Cal says he is going up to a lodge and invites Micki. She is reluctant, since they haven't seen each other in years. Ryan says to go, they could use a work break. Micki is hesitant. Jack also thinks it would be a fun weekend for her.

Next we know, Cal and Micki are driving off to the lodge. Micki asks why he looked her up, Cal says Lloyd wanted him to check on her. Micki is a bit concerned, but says he has to buy her dinner, at least. They suddenly pass through an intense snowstorm. Micki is worried, but Cal drives on. The snow passes, and they arrive at the lodge, which is an exact reproduction of the Magic Castle. Micki is stunned, Cal says he always wanted to bring her here.

Jack is checking out the snow globe after the work day when someone enters the store. Ryan says they are closed, but Jack recognizes his old friend Antonio. Ryan glances at the snow globe as Jack greets his friend.

Soon, Jack is packed and leaving for a retreat at a monastery with Antonio. Ryan pulls Jack aside, saying it is odd that Antonio arrived out of the blue like Calvin, but Jack scoffs, citing Antonio's ties to religion, and leaves.

Jack and Antonio are walking through snow covered woods and suddenly have to pass through an intense snow squall. They head to the same place Cal took Micki, and Jack says he recognizes it, but Antonio says it is a copy of his Order's home in Italy and takes Jack towards it.

At the store, Ryan is looking for the snow globe in the manifest, but finds no reference. Soon, the door opens and it is the nurse, Maya. She says she just arrived in town and looked him up. Ryan says she walked out on him five years ago and just expects to walk back in now. Maya tells him she became a nurse, but Ryan is too suspicious. She wants to be friends, but he says another time. She presses, saying she might be able to help him. He moves the snow globe and says he has to make some calls.

At the Magic Castle building, Cal arrives at Micki's room for a drink before dinner. He hints at her boyfriend trying to impress her, but she says he isn't her boyfriend. They toast to Fate.

Jack and Antonio, in monastic robes, go off to chant and meditate. Micki and Cal walk the halls to go to dinner. They all pass one another, but go through each other, not seeing the other is at the same place.

Ryan gets off the phone and finds out the lodge Cal took Micki to doesn't exist. Maya tries to come up with excuses, calling him suspicious. Ryan makes another call.

At the monastery, Antonio can see and hear Cal and Micki, but only Cal can see him.

Jack, in bed, hears voices, and can make out Micki talking to Calvin. He listens, and goes into the hall. He follows the voices, but finds no one.

Ryan is talking to Lloyd, and finds out Cal was arrested for two murders and was sentenced to death in Argentina two weeks ago. Maya says it just can't be true, still trying to distract Ryan.

Cal takes Micki back to her room, he compliments her, and asks for one more nightcap. Micki lets him into her room. Jack, in the hall, hears the door close. Outside the room, he can still hear Micki talking to Cal. Then he finds a small television which is playing Micki and Cal as if it were a show. Cal looks at the screen and Jack, who backs off. He hurries through the halls and bumps into Antonio, but when he brings him back to the room Micki is in, she can't see them and passes through Jack.

Antonio says to forget Micki, that she is falling for Cal. Antonio says his Master is doing this, and blames Jack for igniting the passion to fight against Satan in Micki and Ryan. He says his Master underestimated Jack and the cousins, but now Satan is going to turn Micki into the mother of his child. Jack says he won't let it happen, and Antonio's face transforms into its true, severely burned form. He tells Jack he can save Micki by giving up his soul, and burns Jack when he touches him. Jack says Micki has to submit willingly and never would, but Antonio says submitting to Cal will be just the same. Only Jack can save her. He leaves Jack to watch.

At the store, Maya is still telling Ryan he is acting crazy. Ryan finds an article with proof of Cal's crimes, then goes to find Jack at the monastery. Maya says she is there to make amends, trying to get Ryan to stay, kissing him gently. But Ryan says his friends are in trouble and leaves. Maya touches the globe and vanishes, transported to the Magic Castle replica. Satan is scolding her, she says she forgot how good Ryan is and wants to know why he wants to hurt him. Satan tells her about his plans for Micki and when she scoffs, he makes her wrists appear slit again. He says she will be in pain forever unless she obeys. She agrees, he lets her free and demands she keep Ryan at bay until Micki is with child. Maya sobs.

Jack goes outside of the building, but is caught by Antonio, who says there is no escape. Either Jack's soul or Micki's body.

Micki and Cal are walking outside, admiring the beauty. Cal gives her his coat as she begins to slightly cave to his wooing. Satan yells for only Cal to hear to "take her."

Jack walks to what appears to be an invisible barrier outside the building. He taps on the glass and sees Maya, then Ryan, in huge form and inside the store. He calls out to an oblivious Ryan.

Ryan says Antonio died two years ago, and the monastery doesn't exist. Maya scoffs, but Ryan's suspicions only grow. He relates them touching the globe and each time, someone from their past arrived. Jack, in the globe, continues to call out but when Ryan looks inside, he doesn't see him. Maya again tries to discourage Ryan. But he pulls out an article about her crimes and suicide. Ryan presses her, and she admits Satan's plan was to drive Ryan to despair once all was done. He asks if Micki and Jack are alive, and Maya says yes, but in the snow globe. Jack, frustrated, heads back to the building.

Later, Maya has taken Ryan to the way into the snow globe. The storm appears and she tells him to press on. Suddenly, she falls as her wrists bleed. Satan calls her a fool, she says they don't deserve this. She tells Ryan to go as she screams, collapses and vanishes. Ryan rushes off to find his friends.

Inside the building, he calls for Micki, walking right though Cal and Antonio without seeing them. Cal says they will offer him the same choice as Jack, and soon, Micki will belong to their master. Jack hears Ryan calling out to Micki.

Cal pours another drink for her, saying he has always wanted her. Micki finally gives in, kissing him. Ryan walks in and sees this, Cal laughs at him, but Micki sees none of this. Ryan tries to touch her but his hands go through her. Jack arrives and he and Ryan can finally see, hear and touch each other. Jack takes Ryan away.

Ryan tells Jack what he learned, and Jack tells him about Satan's plan for Micki, and Ryan realizes Micki is falling for Cal. Antonio appears and tells Ryan to give his soul to save Micki. Jack takes Ryan away, asking where the snow globe is. Ryan tells him it is still at the store. Jack has a plan and they rush off as Antonio continues to taunt them to give up their souls.

Micki and Cal are kissing, then Cal carries Micki to the bed.

Jack takes Ryan to the car, saying they need to find the edge of the globe.

Micki tells Cal not to stop, Cal asks if he wasn't the man she thought he was, would it make a difference. In her inebriated and romanticized state, she says never. Soon, Cal moves, the room transforms and Micki hears laughter. She is in the bed of Satan as Calvin laughs, and Antonio joins in. She tries to escape, but the door shuts. Cal calls to Lucifer. Micki goes to the window and sees nothing but flames. Cal hits her, and puts her back on the bed.

Ryan and Jack drive the car toward the snow and the edge of the globe.

Satan talks to Micki and she watches as he approaches the bed.

Jack and Ryan speed the car toward the glass barrier and crash into it. The globe in the store topples over and falls.

Chaos inside the building erupts, as Satan says they have failed him. Micki scrambles off the bed as Jack calls to her. She rushes out of the building and into the snow outside, running as Antonio chases her before he bursts into flames. The globe shatters on the floor.

Ryan awakens in the store, as does Jack, both covered in snow. Jack wakes Micki, and says they are safe.

Later, after showering, the group sits in Micki's room. Jack says Maya saved them by not giving in to Satan at the last minute. Ryan asks is Micki saw Satan, she says she can only remember his cold eyes, that they were empty. Jack says maybe that is what evil is, the absence of anything good. Ryan wonders if he will try again and Jack says all they have done is survive round one.

My thoughts:

Quite a different episode from the norm here!

First off, not a cursed item from Lewis' collection, rather one apparently owned by Calvin when he was in Buenos Aires and then transformed into part of Satan's scheme to either get their souls or impregnate Micki with his child. Why was Cal wandering about carrying a giant snow globe, then? Was he also weird as well as being psychotic?

And if Lloyd knew about Cal's crimes and death, he didn't think to mention this to Micki?

Sad that even before coming together at Curious Goods, Micki, Ryan and Jack all had someone from their pasts that became either a murderer or rapist. Bad luck has apparently always followed these three.

I do like that Ryan, instead of Jack, was the one who grew suspicious about the events playing out and not just giving in to it all. Ryan has learned from Jack, gotten wiser, and maybe a bit more suspicious and wary, but all for good reason.

Not sure how I liked a mercy-killing nurse being the one who helped them, but I guess she had a warped sense of empathy that was maybe better controlled when she was with Ryan and less when they were apart.

Micki also went a wee bit too quickly to an overnight trip with Cal. She seems the wary one, until Ryan and Jack seem to be eager for her to go off with him. Out of character for them to want that for her, would have made more sense to have them under sway from the globe or something. Just odd for them to meet Cal and be all gung ho about her taking off with him.

And not sure any sin equates to any other. Micki giving in to Cal is way different than giving in to Satan! Weird logic for Satan's plan, but I bet he is pissed he tied everything into the globe being an actual part of things and being so breakable! Why didn't he put one of his 'unbreakable curses' on it like all of the items Lewis sold had?

Plot holes aside, it was a fun diversion of an episode and the first of a few episodes coming that lead into darker, heavier stakes for the group, leading to the intense start of season three.

Chutney Popcorn is the story of a traditional Indian mother in New York and her two daughters - the younger Reena (Ganatra herself in the role), a rebellious photographer and henna-tattoo artist, who lives with her lesbian lover, and the older Sarita, who is married to an American man. Problems start when Sarita is unable to conceive and Reena volunteers to be the surrogate mother.

“I really wanted to make sure the movie was not about the Indian American experience and not about the gay and lesbian experience. The movie is about what this family goes through and what they do to stay together. I wanted it to be entertaining first and foremost-- and to represent an experience that I think is never shown. But the fact that the family is Indian and the fact that Reena is gay is never the issue in the film. I think we would have lost a lot of humor and it would have made the story less emotional if I tried too hard to make those points. Besides - I think because of all the work that's come before - films can move beyond representing the lesbian experience. I mean, a lot of people have told me it's refreshing to see a movie with a gay character that isn't about being gay. Reena is gay - and no one really cares. They care that she's a flakey artist and that she can't be perfect like her sister, and we can all relate to those things a lot more I think.” —Nisha Ganatra [x]
