Ollie Mellors (co-driven by the experienced Ian Windress) gave the latest Proton Iriz R5 a very successful British Rally Championship debut, narrowly missing out on a podium to take fourth overall at the season-opening Cambrian Rally (8th February). Team-mate James Williams (with co-driver Dai Roberts alongside) enjoyed a trouble-free R5 debut to bring the sister car home in fifth overall, rounding out a successful weekend for the Mellors Elliot Motorsport-built Protons.
Mellors is no stranger to the North Wales stages, having won the Cambrian Rally in 2018 whilst in the development phase of the Iriz but with the BRC heavy hitters present in 2020, it would be a tough prospect to repeat. With the car untested and only turning a wheel for the first time when it arrived in Llandudno, Mellors would have to use the opening stages to acclimatise to the brand new car, launching the Michelin shod Iriz to fifth fastest on the opening Crafnant test.
The Cambrian Rally only offered one service during the day meaning that the opportunity to make changes to the car’s set up were limited. Despite the sprint-style event offering only 43 miles, Mellors continued to increase his pace with fourth fastest over the longest stage of the event, Penmachno. The Great Orme Tarmac test before service was Mellors’ at his best, taking second overall time around the cliff-edge stage in Llandudno to reach the halfway point of the event where he started the day. A damaged hub on the rough penultimate test of the event forced Mellors to make some hasty roadside repairs, leaving the Iriz to head into the final stage with only front brakes. Despite the imbalance in the car, Mellors kept his cool to secure a confidence-boosting fourth overall on the Proton’s BRC debut.
James Williams enjoyed a promising R5 debut in the Iriz finishing a solid 5th overall on his R5 BRC debut ensuring that there were two Mellors Elliot Motorsport Proton in the top five overall - a remarkable achievement in the face of some very stiff competition! “This really is a great start for the Proton Iriz R5, for me and the team this weekend,” said Mellors. “The team worked flat out to get the car ready over the last few weeks and literally finished building it on Friday afternoon. It had 15 miles on it when I started the rally and we just came in and set a top-five time with no prior testing. In my mind, that’s an impressive start”. Mellors believes there is much more to come from the squad this season. “The car is very capable and we know what it can do. There were so many variables this weekend, I hadn’t done a recce and made my own notes for three years or so and at this level that is the kind of thing that costs time. Our perfect storm would have been a podium but taking fourth really is a fantastic achievement and it was great to have James [Williams] in fifth in the sister car”.

Fifteen Eleven Design's resto-modded Porsche 914 with Cayman engine
Fifteen Eleven Design’s resto-modded Porsche 914 with Cayman engine
[ad_1] Resto-modded Porsche models are a dime a dozen, but most builds are based on the air-cooled 911. Fifteen Eleven Design, the vintage car-focused arm of British World Rally Championship (WRC) team Mellors Elliot Motorsport, hopes to stand out from the crowd by bringing the often-forgotten 914 into the 21st century. Built from 1969 to 1976, and developed jointly with Volkswagen, the 914 is…

Proton.
Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM).
Tumblr media
«Это были частные тесты, но всё прошло неплохо, — цитирует Гронхольма Motorsport News. — Что касается перспектив дальнейшего сотрудничества, то пока мне сказать нечего».
Tumblr media
«Он провел на тестах весь день и смог обнаружить лишь несколько проблемных областей, требовавших работы, — добавил руководитель MEM Крис Меллорс. — Мы хотим и дальше работать с Маркусом, как, похоже, и он с нами».
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
«Маркус не относится к тем гонщикам, что выбираются из-за руля, источая восторг — даже если он и в самом деле на седьмом небе от счастья, — сказал он. — Поэтому мы сочли хорошим знаком то, что он улыбнулся и сказал: "Хорошая машина"».
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Proton Iriz R5 brochure revealed; tarmac and gravel kits, running costs detailed – priced from RM776,000
Rally outfit Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM) had previously stated that there has been plenty of interest in the Iriz R5 rally car that it has been developing, and now the firm has released pricing details for its rally car that is homologated for competition in both left- and right-hand-drive layouts.
The sales brochure released by MEM on its Facebook page states that the Iriz R5 is priced from GBP140,000 (RM776,000) in base specification, and it includes costs for an options pack, a gravel kit and a tarmac kit, as well as a parts list and estimated running costs.
A base car starts in ‘ready to race’ tarmac trim, where it comes painted and is outfitted with aluminium wheels measuring 18 x 8 inches, tarmac comptetition tyres that are eligible for rallies, front and rear brake master cylinder, brake calipers including spacers, 355 mm front brake discs and 300 mm rear brake discs including bells and fixing rings. The tarmac kit costs GBP23,500 (RM130,222) when purchased separately.
Also included are driver and co-driver competition seats, six-point HANS-compatible harnesses, a competition steering wheel, FIA-approved fire extinguisher system, and front and rear underbody protection.
An options pack is available for GBP45,000 (RM249,362) , and this buys you a Cosworth co-driver’s display, a data handling kit including a laptop with Cosworth software, data key and download cable, full United Kingdom registration, a central guard for exhaust and propshaft protection, a differential guard, front side stone guards and larger-diameter 355 mm rear brake discs including bells.
Also part of the options kit are Winmax tarmac brake pads developed for the Iriz R5, and FIA fuel sample kit, Michelin competition tyres, map light including loom, driver’s footrest, navigator’s footrest including buttons, a roof vent kit, a helmet net, a spare wheel kit including wheel, tyre, wheel tray and strap, wheel brace and a digital Stilo intercom.
In addition to the options package, there are more components that can be purchased separately, such as a heated windscreen (GBP400/RM2,215), brake balance adjuster (GBP120/RM665), lighting kit including a six-light bonnet lamp assembly, left- and right-hand-side corner light assemblies (GBP4,850/RM26,879), anti-glare dashboard coating (GBP120/RM665) and more.
Also available are quick-release drybreak hydraulic connector kits for brakes, clutch, gearbox, rear differential, handbrake release and steering, as well as carbon-fibre mirrors and a mudflap kit.
For customers who are planning to enter their Iriz R5 into gravel rally events, the available gravel kit is priced at GBP19,900 (RM110,397), and this is comprised of a gravel-spec damper assembly, steering arm, outer TCA pin, pin nut and retainer, outer gravel track rod mount, gravel brake discs, disc retaining rings, gravel-spec compound Winmax brake pads, rear wheel scraper assembly, rear wheel stone guard, gravel track rod spacers, gravel brake caliper mounting pins and a set of 15×7-inch Speedline gravel wheels.
The brochure also includes estimated running costs for the Iriz R5 – click on the document pages to see them in detail. Among these is an engine rebuild every 2,000 km, which costs GBP8,000 or RM44,338 for each interval. The brochure also lists the components by category (engine, transmission, steering and so forth), part cost, action required and mileage.
Mellors Elliot Motorsport began developing the Iriz R5 rally car in 2016, and it is powered by a 4B11T engine from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, albeit in reduced capacity from 2.0 litres to 1.6 litres to comply with R5 rally regulations. Also in order to comply with R5 regulations is the fitment of a 32 mm intake restrictor, which limits outputs to around 350 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
Transmission comes courtesy of a five-speed Xtrac sequential manual gearbox and all-wheel-drive with Xtrac front and rear differentials, and suspension is by Reiger three-way adjustable units with external reservoir dampers and hydraulic bump stops. Braking employs Brembo components, and Cosworth provides the electronics suite. Fuel is contained in an 80-litre Advanced Fuel Systems fuel cell.
The R5 category replaced the PWRC category in 2012, along with the S2000 and WRC2 categories of the time. The governing body, FIA aimed for R5 to be a more accessible category for more entrants by placing a cost cap for key components and the overall vehicle, and required constructors to create a customer racing support programme.
The R5 category rally cars are versatile too, as they are also eligible for the European Rally Championship (ERC) and WRC qualifying rounds such as the British Rally Championship (BRC). R5-specification cars may also compete in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC) in the AP4 category.
Here at paultan.org, we’ve followed the development of the MEM-built Iriz R5 with interest, and we got to uncover some interesting facts on the rally car courtesy of founder and team principal Chris Mellors. We’ve also delved into the technical intricacies of why its engine was chosen. What do you think, dear readers? Is this the rally car you’ve been waiting for?

Ten Proton appearances in foreign movies, TV shows
If you’ve recently watched Netflix’s new action thriller Extraction and spotted a few scenes with some Protons in it, we know exactly how that fleeting sense of pride felt like. To keep the ball rolling, we crept deeper into cyberspace to look for other foreign movies or TV shows that have featured some of our national cars, and the results were quite surprising.
Did you know that the 1989 Proton Saga 1.3 was featured in Tomorrow Never Dies? Yes, the 1997 James Bond flick, but only for a very brief scene in a multi-storey car park. To make this a more meaningful story, we decided to list just the 10 most prominent foreign Proton appearances, some of which include actual driving scenes by main characters of a show.
1. Proton Saga 1.5 SE in Fifth Gear
youtube
We’ll start with the obvious – first on the list is a short five-minute segment that we might all have seen before, and that is the 1991 Proton Saga 1.5 SE featured on the 16th season of Fifth Gear. Here, presenter Tim Shaw swapped out his E46 BMW M3 for an “old banger” that is the Saga, and attempted to live with it for a full week.
Besides looking weathered, the car fared well for something of its age (and price) – it was nearly 20 years old when Tim took it for a spin! After some digging, we found that the white Saga was manufactured in 1991 and registered the same year on June 7. It’s almost as if we could smell the car from the inside…
2. Proton Saga in Mr Bean
This one is another classic, and a scene anyone familiar with the Proton brand would remember for life. In fact, it’s possibly the single most memorable scene involving a Proton car (and a golf ball) in a foreign show. Feel free to revisit the episode – nobody’s too old for some classic comedic gold by Sir Rowan Atkinson.
3. Proton Satria GTi in Fat Pizza
Back in the day, no Proton could set the hearts racing like the Satria GTi, as far as road legal Protons go, that is. So to see Malaysia’s very own “hot hatch” used (and driven by the main cast) in an Australian film called Fat Pizza was quite a treat, even if no one had literally heard of the film from this part of the world.
4. Proton Satria Neo in Top Gear Australia
Proton has had a long-running presence in Australia after the Wira was exported Down Under in 1995. Consumer uptake was relatively mild, to say the least, but the Satria hatch was once again put in the limelight in 2008 when The Stig drove a bone stock Neo model at the Top Gear Australia track. It was a great display of the car’s talent, one almost as good as the impact of the publicity stunt itself.
5. Proton Satria Neo S2000 in Top Gear UK
Before Chris Mellors of Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM) went to town with the Proton Iriz R5, there was the Satria Neo S2000. The rally-bred hatch proved to be a formidable machine in the hands of Alister McRae, the younger brother of rally legend Colin McRae.
For this special Top Gear episode, MEM supplied two identical Satria Neo S2000s for a friendly competition between Top Gear UK and its Australian counterpart. The episode featured a five-event challenge including a drag race, drifting, and rallycross. In the end, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were crowned the winners. No sledgehammers were featured in this episode, thankfully.
6. Proton Gen2 in Yaprak Dökümü
If you feel like the list is starting to get weirder, that’s probably the case. The Proton Gen2 had been repeatedly used by the cast of Yaprak Dökümü, an award-winning Turkish TV series. As a matter of fact, it featured the Gen2 and Waja in three successive episodes, possibly making this the most “successful” outing for the national brand in a foreign show.
Apparently, Proton seems to have a decent following in Turkey. Older models such as the Wira and Saga can be spotted in major Turkish cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, whereas the Waja is being used as taxis in Istanbul. Proton is currently being distributed by Ulu Motor in Turkey.
7. Proton Perdana V6 in Jaggubhai
We’ve got to admit, nobody at the team had actually seen nor heard of this show before, but this Tamil movie might as well been a Malaysian one, considering the amount of Protons and Peroduas (with Malaysian license plates!) featured in it.
The show was shot in 2008 in multiple locations – Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Chennai, but most scenes portraying Australia were shot in Malaysia. In some car chase scenes, only the main cars, including the Perdana V6 above, had foreign plates, but even those were very clearly stuck on.
8. Proton Wira in Battle of the Damned
You’d think the popular Proton Wira would get more screen time than some of its siblings in this list, but somehow that is not the case. We meant to find more meaningful appearances for the Wira instead of cameos such as this, but we think having Dolph Lundgren play a gunslinging soldier in this post-apocalyptic movie makes for a rather satisfying consolation.
The movie was shot in Malaysia and released in 2013, depicting a virus-stricken world where those infected turn into flesh-eating zombies. Reviews were mixed, but if you’re a Rocky fan, consider adding this to the list.
9. Proton Wira Aeroback in Ordinary Lies
Ordinary Lies was a British TV series that was watched by millions, and BBC ran it for two seasons between 2015 and 2016. In the fifth episode of the first season, a degraded Wira Aeroback was spotted, but that’s about the only time a Proton was featured in the drama. Who else misses their Wiras?
10. Proton Saga Iswara Aeroback in Power Rangers Jungle Fury
The final entry on this list is the Proton Saga Iswara Aeroback, which was part of a brief acrobatic fight scene in Power Rangers Jungle Fury. The little-known series was shot in Australia and New Zealand (explains the foreign plate) and released in 2008.
There you have it, folks. That pretty much sums up the series this time around. Which of the films above have you seen, or rather, which one is your favourite Proton appearance in a foreign show? Let us know in the comments, below. Also, feel free to let us know if you’ve spotted any other Protons in other non-local shows!

Proton Iriz R5 livery competition – stay home, colour!
While some car companies are releasing colouring images to take people’s minds off the coronavirus outbreak, others are turning it into a competitive sport. One of those doing the latter is Mellors Elliot Motorsport (MEM), the British outfit managing Proton’s overseas rallying efforts.
The Bakewell rally team is holding a livery competition using the Proton Iriz R5 as a base. The contest is split into two categories – one for “big kids” with a solitary front three-quarter shot of the car, and the other for “little kids” using a blueprint. The latter is actually a better base for developing a livery, but we digress.
Participants are free to design whatever livery they’d want if they owned one, either by printing out the images and drawing on them or rendering them digitally. Once completed, they can post their artwork on MEM’s social media pages. The winner will receive a Proton Motorsport fleece.
Thinking about entering? You’d better hurry, as entries close March 31. Go ahead and try it, and as usual we hope that you stay safe and please, stay home.
