Hn, don’t know how to feel about the girl being the support character, if anyone I thought that would Tom’s role. Because Tom just seems more like a support kind of person, or at least an allrounder especially given the fact that he was able to heal and bring together Iris and Rex. But then again i guess theres the might meants that you’re the leader, it’s not bad I guess. Rex is very obviously the heavy hitter of the team so theres no surprise there

Iris’ butterfly motif is interesting, I’d love to see if theres a reason for it if we ever get the chance to learn more about them

I love how the ED and OP for this episode was both new and fresh without wasting any money just by using different parts of the same song. Very nice move on the team’s part

And with that, we have come to the end of the season, as well as the end to this little series of my thoughts on Hypmic episodes. This has been such a fun experience that just started out as a documentation to show my hypmic friend later and compare our initial thoughts, but now its grown into such a fun little project. I’ve really enjoyed typing out these thoughts that I’ve had and I’ve really enjoyed the thoughts that everyone chips in as well! 

This series has really helped me keep a clear head throughout this term and I’m very thankful for Hypmic as well as the tumblr community. But for better or for worse, this has come to an end. But if we always look down, we won’t be able to find a rainbow.

Really striking moments in Return that I forgot about:

The entire sequence in the Siege of Gondor chapter where Denethor rapidly deteriorates from being the sharp-eyed keen-edged protector-general of Minas Tirith to being a grief-stricken father unwilling to look away from the face of his dying son or release his fevered hand...its just so sad and awful! I wish Denethor hadn't been made so aggressively unsympathetic in the movie. I think actually Theoden's movie characterization matches Denethor's book characterization best.

Merry missing Pippin and engaging in an elaborate fantasy where he rides into Minas Tirith on a white horse and rescues poor lonely frightened Pippin himself

Meanwhile Pippin is too busy being a straight badass

Not that the prose is bad by any means in earlier parts, but Tolkien really shines in Return. Every other paragraph I see a line that just makes me gasp

Theoden falls on literally the second page of the Pelennor Fields chapter

It's extremely noticeable to me that in many ways, the hobbits are the only real characters. So many of the other characters seem very like symbols and very unlike people. This is a huge divergence from the movies, which are populated entirely with breathing bleeding people.

Speaking of divergence from the movies, I always forget how much of a nonentity Eowyn is in the book. In many ways I prefer book Eowyn to her movie counterpart--she's so hard and cold and miserable in a way that's unusual for a female character, while the movies soften her up a lot, giving her all these scenes as a nurturer that are nowhere in the book. But the movies also let her be a major character, and wow, the book sure doesn't.

The lord of the nazgul "nursed" the fell beast...did he straight up raise this thing from an egg. Is this thing his beloved pet. Did Eowyn behead a guys pet bird.

Eowyn really did take off her helmet to reveal her hair just for the drama of it all. Shes so cocky...I feel a lesbian way about it.

Theoden never knows that eowyn was there. His last words are to Merry, who tries to tell him but is cut off. The drama of it all...

The absolute heartbreak of Eomer's hairpin turn from warriors bravado even after the death of theoden--to absolute suicidal despair when he thinks that eowyn is dead. I mean it's really on a dime. It very much parallels Denethor, I think

It isnt in the movies so I always forget this but Eomer and Aragorn actually spend a ton of page time hanging out together

During Denethor's whole episode he specifically says that he will not have "love halved", along with multiple references to how he dislikes Faramir being a "wizards pupil". I think that's an interesting twist on the usual dynamic this relationship is portrayed as--theres jealousy over being the lesser of affection and honor on both sides and oh it's all so damn sad
